F OREW ORD The present issue of the Directory follows somew hat th e plan used in preYious issues. There is a slig ht change in the grouping of the ex-coll egia members, who are classified as !if ~ . part life, or an nu aL Annual membership is open to those onlY who were initiated prior to September, 1922. Those only are included whose du es were paid in full by the end of th e fisca l year, May 25, 1926. The past yea r ha? shown extensive g rowth, because two nevv names have been placed on the Honor Roll, while ninety- six ha ve been added to the Hermes Roll. A lpha Sigma Alpha has a lso extended her borders, so as to include X i X i Chapter, at th e South ern Branch of th e University of California, Omicron O micron Chapter, at O hio State Teachers College at Kent, and Pi P i Chapter at New York State Normal College at Buffalo . It is to be regretted that only three of the Chapters were able to supply cuts for the present Directory. Pictures add much to any publication, and alumnae are always interes ted in th ose of their own g roups. vVith a littl e ca re, every Chapter coul d proYide in its annual budget for a cut that would accompany the Chapter roll. The home addresses a re the only ones gi ven. They wi ll be u sed as a mailing li st by the National E ditor throughout th e year 1926-27, unl ess she is notified to th e contra ry. Great care has been taken to secure the correct addresses, for all "copy" has been submitted to National Officers, who a re in a position to have information, as well as to all Chapter Adv iser s and all Ex-Collegia Secretaries. Members 路w hose addresses ha ve been changed since publication, or vvho desi re the magazine sent elsew here, should advise the Nationa l Editor. Both th e National E ditor and the National Treasurer would appreciate receiv ing any additiona l information that should have been included .

PLEDGING DAY Tune : "A Perfect Day."
When you come to the end of your pledging day, And you breathe a prayer in your thought, As you pledge your faith unto A. S. A., And the hour with all joy is fraught; Do you think what your vow on pledging day Should mean to a sincere heart, As you give your promise to A . S. A., And become of her a part ? You are joining yourself with a num'rous train In pursuit of lofty ideals ; You have pledged to aspire and seek to attain To the crown that such living yields; With what measure you mete will be meted you In service and love each day; And to give full measure your whole life thru Is your pledge to A. S . A. Now, this is the end of pledging day. You've begun on a voyage new. May you find true comrades along the way, As you go all your journey thru. May you learn that the gladness of pledging day Is only a foretaste faint Of the joy to be had thruout A. S. A. In fellowship all acquaint. - IDA

THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM Tune :
J.
B. Dykes.
As shadows cast by sun and cloud Flit o'er the summer grass, So, in Thy sight, Almighty One, Earth's generations pass. And as the years, an endless host, Come swiftly pressing on, The brightest names that earth can boast Just glisten and are gone. Yet, doth the Star of Bethlehem shed A lustre pure and sweet ; And still it leads, as once it led, To the Messiah's feet. 0 Father, may that holy Star Grow every year more bright, And send its glorious beams afar, To fill the world with light. -William Cullen Bryant. 0 Holy Star, our symbol blest, Thy children ever lead, To live up always to the best, In thought, in word, in deed. And may Thy spirit, Glorious One, From baseness ever bar The souls of us, who now become "The Followers of the Star." 0 Holy Star of Bethlehem, Help us alway, we pray, To live in words, to live in deeds, The vows we take today;

FOLLOWING THE STAR
OQ.ce in the orient sky, Gleamed a wondrous Star. Wise men saw it shining, Followed it afar, Thro mountain passes, O'er the deserts wild, 'Till at last it led them To a lowly-cradled Child. HOLDING THE VISIONS OF YOUTH Tune : "Heidelberg."
Better than riches of worldly wealth Is the wisdom we gain in college. It can bring happiness, hope and health, For wisdom is vi rtue and truth, 'Tis beauty, 'tis service, 'tis fellowship, 'Tis passing the torch of knowledge, 'Tis doing one's best, with fervor and zest, 'Tis holding the visions of youth. THE LAND OF HEART'S DESIRE Tune : "When Johnny Comes Marching H ome."
A land there is where joys abound, Where sorrow is unY.nown, A land where peace and love are found, \ iVhere plenty sits the throne. Its shores are washed with summer seas, The poets call it Hesperides. 'Tis lovely Eldorado, The Land of Heart's Desire, Lovely Eldorado, Land of Heart's Desire. E ach has his E ldorado, But there's only one worth while. Men of genius and bravado Travel many a weary mile, To find the land of rainbow gleams, A land they fashion of gossamer dreams, But few reach E ldorado, The Land of Heart's Desire, Lovely Eldorado, .\ Land of Heart's Desire. A nd some there be who wisely start On the trail the poets blazed, But very soon they draw apart Toward castles their hopes have raised. A will o' the wisp they'll madly chase, Only to faint in the final race, Far from E ldorado, The Land of Heart's Desire, Lovely E ldorado, Land of Heart's Desire. Yet the path is plain. O'er it hangs a Star, . And all along the way Is many a guidepost, seen afar, Gold-lettered with A . S. A.

THERE IS AN ISLAND Music: Original.
There is an island, wondrous fair. Ione with it in loveliness can ever compare, None with skies so sunny, with founts so sparkling clear, None with hills so verdant, with vales so dear, None with dawns so glorious, or days so pure and bright, Where every cloud's encircled with the rainbow's beauteous light, None where lingers longer the rosy sunset glow, None where fragrant zephyrs so softly blow. There is an island, wondrous fair. None with it in loveliness can ever compare, None where in the meadows the birds so sweetly sing, None where bides so graciously th' eternal Spring. None where statelier palm trees their lengthening shadows throw, None where fruit and flowers in such abundance grow, None where dusk's so lovely, so calm and fair the night, None with stars so tender, or moons so bright. And in this island, so wondrous路 fair , Mid all this loveliness without compare; Dwells a happy people, from fear and sorrow free, Knowing only youth and all youth's ecstasy. In this land elysian no dreams are e'er denied. For every splendid vision abundant wealth's supplied,Pearl strewn the beaches, the sands of gleaming gold, , And in the temples are treasures untold. V..There is this island so wondrous fair? Would you see this loveliness without compare? vVould you drink of fountains whose waters crystal clear vVill grant you youth eternal and banish all fear? ST. VALENTINE Tune: "St. Joles."
St. George of England slew a fierce dragon, St. Michael forced Lucifer out of Heaven, St. Patrick drove the snakes from old Ireland, St. Louis fought Saracen battles seven, St. Boniface won the German heart, St. Nicholas dowered three maidens fair, But of all the saints in the calendar, There's none can with our own compare, St. Valentine! St. Valentine ! Kindliest saint of a glorious line ! The saint whQ made the blind to see, The saint who healed the broken heart, The saint who fostered human hopes, The saint . who escaped Death's fiery dart. St. Valentine was Bishop of Rome, In the days of the Emperor Claudius II, 路Who wickedly ordered his death at the stake, A deed that his hirelings could not do, For a storm arose and quenched the fire, And when his pious fri ends returned, To claim from the ashes his bones, they found A throbbing heart, but no body burned. St. Valentine! St. Valentine! In the golden days of glory, When on earth the gods did dwell, When, as told in Homeric story, Right did rule, and all was well, On the heights of great Olympus, In the palace of his sire, Fed on nectar of Hymettus, Crowned with every heart's desire, Lived a lad, None so glad, Hermes, loved by man and god, Hermes, son of Maia sweet, Hermes, of the magic rod, Hermes, of the winged feet. Still superbly towers Olympus, Still cloth lovely Greece abide, Bees still hum on Mt. Oh, we'll ever loyal be To A. S. A. eternally! Oh, Alpha Sigs are full of 'pep'. They make all the others watch their step, For theirs is the frat with the greatest 'rep'. 'Tis Alpha Sigma Alpha 'REP'. Oh, A. S. A., all hail, alway!'' -CARMEN RICI:-IARD,

THE BEST OF ALL SORORITIES Tune: "The Wearing Of The Green."
Oh, sisters clear, and did you hear the news of the college town? The frat pin is required henceforth to adorn the co-eel's gown, That Asa's laws we now must keep, and show his colors fair, So every one we see may know just where we stand, just where. I met with an alumna and she took me by the hand, And sh6 said, "How's clear old Asa, and all the merry band?" "She's the best of all sororities, that ever have been known, And so we're proud, yes proud, to be forever Asa's own." -HAZEL KILLAM,
