Founders' Day Message

Live the dream that is Alpha Sigma Alpha by Kim R. Meyer National President

"Turn back the Alpha Sigma Alpha years to the autumn of 1901 .. . Travel to the state of Virginia known as 'the Cradle of the Republic,' the home of great American patriots and presidents . . . Walk in the southern charm of the small town of Farmville . . . " Suddenly you are there on the campus of historic State Female Normal Schoo l . .. Pompadours with hair bows, crisp shirt waists and long fu ll skirts are high fashion on the campus. Sounds of college life float on the gentle fall air: lovely southern vo ices lift ed in college songs or hymns, the hum of classroom activiti es, the exch ange of cordial greetings with an inimitable southern accent. You may be intrigued by the swish of those long full skirts as girls walk close to the white picket fence to dart bewitching glan ces at som e h andsom e young men who just happen along form ne arby Hampd e n-S ydn ey College. Many aspects of daily li fe were vastly differe nt for our found ers than they are for our collegiate and alumnae members today. How can their dreams and ideals still be relevant to us today? Their lives seem so simple compared to the hectic pace we set for ourselves today-and th e difficult choices we have to make as

women concerning our health, our careers and our families. But 91 years later , many things remain the same. As women, we still cherish and cultivate our relationships with other people , especiall y other women . We search for and need that special connection and support system summed up in the word " sisterhood." We look to eac h oth er for e ncouragem e nt , guidance in making the tough decisions and just someone to laugh and have fun with . Some thi ngs never change. The last issue of The Phoenix allowed us to relive the last 15 years of our history. What a joy and humblin g ex p eri e nce it was to re ad about th e accomplishme nts an d de di cation of so man y wome n . Within th e sisterhood of our beloved so rority, our members have been encouraged and nurtured to be the best they can be-living the promise to " Aspire, Seek, Attain." Today w remember and honor our founders. We have memorized the ir names and embrace their values e mbodi e d in our four aims. Each me mber of Alpha Sigma Alpha is part of the li ving legacy begun by these fi ve women. Each one of us is part of the history of Alpha Sigma Alpha that is unfolding every day. Share the sisterhood. Strive for the best. Live the dream that is Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Kim Meyer, vice president of programs, recognized the 2 7 years of continuous national level service by immediate past national headquarters executive Rosie Fellin and declared the day as Rose Marie Fellin Day. To commemorate the event, everyone wore a red/white ribbon pin, and Rosie was given a bucket of candy to pass out throughout the day. Immediately following the meeting was the foundation breakfast, where contributors to the foundation were recognized. The remainder of the day was scheduled with a variety of workshops for collegians, alumnae and advisors, with up to 13 from which to select. Though energized with all the new things taught at the workshops, dinner was a welcome break. Dr. Richard Keeling, director of student health, University of Virginia, was the guest speaker for the next general session event. He reviewed a wide range of issues affecting student decisions regarding 路 AIDS, its impact and the trends in our culture that have led to this health care crisis. He noted advertising plays a very persuasive role and promotes things that conflict with the current buzz phrase "just say no ." He emphasized the impact and demonstrated examples with a video presentation. He noted we are faced with the real world versus advertising images, where nothing is complicated, everything is easy and prepackaged . He concluded the presentation by offering realistic advice: "Do what you value." The last event of the day was an open forum discussion, " All Hands on Deck," led by Connie Hoffman, national vice president of finance , and Sandy Brzezinzki, national constitution chairman. This was established to give participants an opportunity to pose questions and discuss issues being considered during the convention, including constitution changes and alumnae dues. Saturday was another full day and began with the white breakfast. Several guests from the S. June Smith Center, one of the sorority's two national philanthropies , at-

From the Editor

'Al:A forbids hazing' by Nancy I.Z. Reese National Editor

Alpha Sigma Alpha will not tolerate hazing, even of the most innocuous type, at any of its chapters. Hazing is a scourge that must be eliminated. It can result in death, ph ys ical inju ry and emo ti o nal trauma fo r pledges and, in most states, is against the law. In addition to Alpha Sigma Alpha's clearly stated policy against hazing, three chapter officers, the advisor and every pledge must sign an anti-hazing agreement, and every chapter is now required to use the " ALA Pledge Ed ucation Program," a non-hazing program. No act of hazing can be tolerated. Acts that may look silly or cute may be causing emotional stress to the individual, and they may be just the outward signs of a much more serious problem. I urge all pledges, members, advisors, alumnae and parents to help AI:A eliminate hazing by reporting a ny su sp ec t ed vio lati ons of a pledge's rights. Any report will be kept confidential, will be investigated and appropriate action taken.

Alpha Sigma Alpha has just been forced to mete out its most severe p un ishm en t yet for hazin g. Th e chapter involved has been un der observation for suspected hazing violati ons for years. Repeated warnings and attempts to work with the chapter on its new member education program apparently were without effect. For extreme emoti onal hazing, or wh at one p ledge call e d "eigh t weeks of hell," the chapter is on four years of probation. National officers will supervise the new member program for four years. The case against this chapter is se ri ous. In one in cident, pledges were driven off campus, repeatedly harassed and forced to do unnatural acts, most of it while bli ndfolded. Reading about this travesty of a pledge program made me sickand mad . Sick that anyone had to go through this kind of treatment and mad that anyone would do this in the name of Alpha Sigma Alpha. I again urge all Alpha Sigma Alphas to take ac ti on wh e n co nfronted by even the hint of such behavior, whi ch cannot be tolerated by any member and will not be tolerated by th e national organizati on. i":r

* i":r

Alpha Sigma Alpha Policy on Hazing Alpha Sigma Alpha forbids hazing. Hazing is defined as any activity that endangers the physical safety of a pledge; produces mental or physical discomfort, cause embarrassment , fright , humiliation , ridicule , or degrades the individual. The pledge is a " provisional member" of the sorority, and she is not to be subjected to any treatment that debases her status or robs her of her dignity. The National Council will investigate any report of hazing by any chapter. Confirmation of such activity will be followed by disciplinary action . Just as Alpha Sigma Alpha forbids its initiated members from hazing , it forbids any pledge from allowing herself and/or her pledge sisters to be " hazed ." Whenever there is a doubt about whether an activity , request or requirement is hazing , contact a national officer.

State of the Sorority

Reflections on the past biennium National President Diane James presented the traditional State of th e Sorority address during th e 1992 convention. The address reflected on the accomplishme nts of the past two years as well as goals for the future. Some highlights from the presentation: *The sorority's me mbership in' eludes approx im ate l y 4.5 , 000 women from across the country. *The sorority held three Emma Coleman Frost Leadership D evelopment Institutes this past year in Missouri, D elaware and Indiana. The institutes will continue to be held in the years that conventions are not held. *Nancy I. Z. Reese, will be the president of College Fraternity Editors Associations for 1992-93. This is the first time ALA has held that position and only th e third tim e since 1924 that the position has been held by a woman. *Ellen Funk Morris , national scholarship chairman, developed a scholarship program that was presented as part of the conve ntion program. The ritual also was revised by Marti Stratton , national secretary, and Susanne Withsosky, national ritual chairman , and performed during convention. *After 24 years of service to ALA as part-time headquarters executive, Rose Marie Fellin retired, and

Diane Y. James

Lisa Tait was hired as a fu ll-time headquarters exec utive. The national headquarte rs redecorating committee has begun work on th e redecorating of national headquarters, the first since 1969. The Nation al Council has committed mon ey so this proj ec t might be completed over the next bie nnium . *Th e S. Jun e Smith C e nt e r , added at the last convention as part of th e sorority's national philanthropic program , has bee n very popular with collegiate and alumnae chapters. Over the past biennium, chapters have contributed over $6,.500 to the center. *Over the biennium, two chapters were installed: Epsilon Pi at

Tarleton State University, Stephenville, TX, and Epsilon Upsilon, California University of Pe nnsylvania, California, PA. *Colonization and installation occurred for two chapters: Epsilon Phi, Indiana University, Bloomington , IN, and Epsilon Chi , GoldeyBeacom College, Wilmington , DE. *Colonization occurred for four campus groups: Pl ymouth State College, Plymouth , NH; Be ntl ey College, Waltham, MA; North Adams State College, North Adams, MA; and Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN . *Regretfully, Beta Delta Colony at Southern Mississippi State Unive rsit y , Hatti es burg , MS , was dosed in spring 1991 ; and Alpha Alpha Chapter, Miami University, Oxford, OH, was placed on inactive status, with plans underway for areorganization in fall 1993. *Donations to the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation stand at over $70,000. The Foundation has been ab le to support th e sorority by fund ing a part of th e Emma Coleman Frost Leade rship D evelopment Institutes. *Th e Long Rang e Planning Committee will b e r ev ive d and asked to focus on membership services, expansion, headquarters operations , organizational structure, public relations and finances. *

New alumnae dues collection procedure During the 1992 National Convention , several changes were made to the constitution and bylaws to allow Alpha Sigma Alpha to enhance services for alumnae and alumnae chapters. Anyone initiated after July 1, 1992, will pay a one-time alumnae dues of $50, due the October after she is initiated. For example, a woman initiated in the spring of her freshman year will pay her $50 one time alumnae dues in October of her sophomore year. For any woman initiated before July 1, 1992, there are three options: 1. Pay $40 one time alumnae dues before Dec. 31, 1992. This reduced rate is in appreciation of the loyal financial support of our alumnae in the past. 2. Pay $50 one time alumnae dues any time.

THE PHOENIX OF ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA

3. Continue to pay annual dues of $8. The following women paid their alumnae dues at the convention: Marianne Bullock, Cherrie Shallock, Lori Robinson , Dee Dee Francis, Rosemary Goss, Kim Meyer, Connie Hoffman , Linda Mitchell, Cindy Christfield , Leslie Ziringer, Amanda Blecha, Mary Pittman, Sandra Brzezinski, Vicki Hersh and Therese Miller. Some of these people paid their $40 dues and sent the extra $10 to the Foundation. Everyone paying one-time alumnae dues will receive a card to carry in her wallet identifying her as an alumnae member in good standing for life. When she joins an alumnae chapter, whe will show the treasurer her card indicating she is a member in good standing. (Membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha is

for life; paying alumnae dues makes you a member in good standing.) Alumnae chapters may still collect local dues. The money collected from these alumnae dues will be used for programming to bridge the gap between collegiate and alumnae membership , increased support for women starting new alumnae chapters, networking capabilities and leadership schools for alumnae, methods for better communication between graduating seniors and alumnae chapters and a membership data base maintained at national headquarters to support these programs. All members of Alpha Sigma Alpha are also encouraged to make taxdeductible contributions to the Foundation. Y:l Y:l

Charting the Foundation of the future by Bonnie Koenemann Foundation Chairman

Following the convention theme, "Charting our Course," the Foundation board kept busy promoting the course for the Foundation and what it can do for Alpha Sigma Alpha in th e years to come. The stars were shining brightly, and those who wanted to follow the course made a $20 donation or more. They received a gold star pin to wear on their name badge. Name badges also were mark e d with brightly colored dots to indicate cumulative levels of giving. Chances were sold on three items that had been donated to the Foundation. On e was a lavali ere and chai n, a new jewelry item introduced at the 1990 convention. The lavaliere was designed by Gretchen Erb Foust and represents the star and crown. Also, there were two Al:A watches that were very popular with collegians and alumnae.

Gold star chapters recognized Eacn year, chapters have been asked to donate $1 per member to the Foundation to help establish a pattern of giving. Those chapters sending in $100 or more are designated as " Gold Star Chapters. " This year, there was an increase in the number of chapters reaching this goal. Charter members of the " Proud 1 00" were recognized at th e breakfas t with a certifi cate of appreciati on. Th e "Proud 100" is a title given to those who will have given $1,000 or more to the Foundation by Alpha Sigma Alpha's 100th anniversary in the year 2001 . By convention tim e, there were 22 members who had already achieved this goal and were designated charter members. Others are challenged to become members of the "Proud 100.
