Celebrating 96 years of Alpha Sigma Alpha sisterhood BY SUZANNE KILGANNON PRESTON, BI National President

ere is a clispness in the air that has arlived very suddenly this fall, heralding in another autumn. Once again children are waiting at school bus stops, football games are being played and Halloween costume sales are in full swing. For Alpha Sigma Alphas, autumn means the anniversary of the founding of our sorolity. Founders' Day is a time for celebration as we gather together to reflect on the joys of our sisterhood. It is a time for reflection about what our sorolity stands for and to cheiish the timelessness of our unique bond. Virginia State Normal School was a very interesting place at the turn of the last century. It was already the unexpected site of the founding of three other sorolities. Each of our founders had received invitations to join the other sorolities, but accepting those invitations meant that they would be separated. Together they already had a strong bond they did not want to break. It was then that Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded - founded to preserve the ties the founders had with one another. It strikes me that these five young women were so determined to preserve

their friendships. Could they not have stayed good fliends even if they had joined the other sorolities? Perhaps, but they knew their relationships would truly flouiish only if they were bound to one another in a more significant way. Alpha Sigma Alpha provided them that connection. Those connections remain today. We are all bonded to one another by the vows we made and the founding plinciples that have withstood the last 96 years. Our new theme, "Every member makes a difference," takes on an even deeper meaning when put in this context. Just like the founders, each of us leaves our irnplint on this sorolity. We are a sorolity of women with many talents, of many backgrounds, with many pursuits. Each of us is valued because of the skills and talents we possess. Alpha Sigma Alpha is a fluid organization, constantly evolving to meet the needs of women. We are who we are because of every single sister. Every member adds to the special gift this sorolity is. We now have this legacy to pass on. We must nurture this gift as it has been nurtured in the past. Let us cheiish the connections we enjoy as we pause to celebrate our 96 years of sisterhood in Alpha Sigma Alpha.

The convention will be kicked-off with an opening speaker. Following this opening session, convention-goers will be going off- ite for a Texas-style evening at a local ranch with a barbecue and special entertainment. Two general sessions and five blocks of workshops will be held during the week. Workshop topics will include risk management, communication , gender issues . scholarship, due process, the CoLlegiate Officers' Handbook and the new officer structure, rush for collegiate and alumnae chapters, financial planning and roundtables. The marketplace is scheduled for Saturday, the 4th of July. A festive, patriotic atmos phere will serve as a backdrop for members to learn more about topics of interest such as the web site, the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation , the leader hip consu ltant program , AlphaNet, philanthropic

projects, alumnae involvement, scholarships and much more. The afternoon event will be complete with awards and recognition for the most patriotic dress, person who traveled farthest, the most conventions attended and several others. House Specialties, official merchandiser for Alpha Sigma Alpha, will be on hand, along with Burr, Patterson and Auld, sorority jeweler, so everyone will have the opportunity to purchase convention memorabilia as well as Alpha Sigma Alpha merchandise. Since it is the 222nd anniversary of the U.S., Saturday evening will be capped off with a fireworks display over Lhe lake next to the hotel. Convention-goers will have a front-row seat for the display from the hotel lawn. There also will be time to enjoy the celebration in the Las Colinas area where the hotel is located. Las Colinas is one of the hottest places in Dallas to spend the 4th. On Sunday after the foundation breakfast and second general session, participants will have some free time to explore the Dallas area. Side tours will be available to places such as the Sixth Floor Book Depository Museum and plaza where John F. Kennedy was shot, the

Movie Studios at Las Colinas, shopping and other sights in the area. Other traditional events during the convention will be the Palm Dinner, during which the contributions and achievements in the areas of philanthropy and scholarship will be recognized, initiation and memorial services as well as three business meetings. The awards banquet, during which outstanding achievement will be recognized, is Sunday evening. The registration fee will be $125. The hotel and meal plans are combined and will include three dinners, one lunch and three breakfasts at a cost of $350 per person for four in a room. The foundation breakfast will be an optional meal for an additional fee, and prices for off-site excursions will vary based on the trip selected. Rooms will be available for a special rate two days before and two days after the convention for those who would like to spend more time in the Dallas area. Put July 2-6 on your calendar and plan to attend the 1998 Alpha Sigma Alpha National Convention, "Celebrating New Horizons."

to spend the holiday weekend catching up and renewing Al..A friendships. The Omni Mandalay Hotel, filled with exquisitely crafted antique Indonesian furnishings, will be home to the 1998 national convention. Its 420 guest rooms, with views of downtown Dallas and the canals of Las Colinas, are roomy and airy. The hotel features a health club with a Nautilus weight machine, spa, pool and sauna. It is one of 50 hotel properties in the Las Colinas development, which has been proclaimed the best planned commercial/residential community in the world. Almost half of this 12,000-acre area in Irving, TX, has been developed as greenbelt, park and public-access/recreational space. Office buildings surround Lake Carolyn while the Mandalay Canal is a beautiful setting for a nde in a Venetian water taxi or shopping in the boutiques along the waterway. Four 18-hole golf courses, racquet sports. swimming, equestrian facilities and the Las Colinas Sports Club are a few of the recreational options. At the center of the development is the renowned Mustangs of Las Colinas, a sculpture depicting nine larger-than-life mustangs galloping across a granite

stream. Dedicated in 1984, this sculpture memonalizes the hentage of Texas, recognizing the state as not only a geographical place but as a distinctive spilit and way of life for people who are committed to the freedoms of the individual. It has captured the imagination of people from around the world. Texas' own Hollywood, the Movie Studios at Las Colinas, which have housed such Hollywood hits as "JFK," "Robocop" and "Leap of Faith," are open daily for public tours and include a stop at the National Museum of Communications. Irving is a bustling metropolis that is home to more than 160,000 people. When you fly into Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, you're already in Irving. Worth a visit is Hentage Park, located in the heart of Irving's histone district. It contains a number of histone relics, such as Caster Cabin, one of the city's onginal cabins, built in 1887, and nearby is Hentage House, built in 1912 and one of Irving's oldest homes. Other entertainment opportunities in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area include Six Flags Over Texas, Wet 'N Wild waterpark, museums, theaters and nightlife.

With an extremely active social calendar, the Dallas alumnae have a lot of practice in hosting events. It comes as no surprise, then, that the members of the Greater Dallas Alumnae Chapter are counting the weeks until the 40th Alpha Sigma Alpha National Convention r in 1998. The 10-year-old chapter has 15 to 20 active members, according to alumnae president Betty Yount Gardner, BA. These members get together throughout the year to have fun, often with their spouses. Favorite activities include an annual lasagna dinner, a pool party, a Founders' Day luncheon, a holiday party and a spectacular annual country family picnic at the lake house of Kathy Messina Goodwin, fA. The alumnae also make Easter baskets each year for the Richardson Transition Center. Under the direction of Kelly Augustyniak, AY, the chapter is busily

getting organized for the convention and will host a planning luncheon in January for national officers. When the convention begins, chapter members will be busy staffing the hospitality booth at the Omni Mandalay Hotel and greeting A'LAs as they arrive at the airport. The Omni Mandalay Hotel, famous for the lifelike mustang statues that sit out front, will help convention-goers celebrate the 4th of July with front row seats for a spectacular fireworks display. An authentic Texas barbecue is planned during the week at a nearby ranch. Not to be missed will be the opportunity to float down the nearby Mandalay Canal in a water taxi, stopping at the many shops along the way. As July 1998 draws closer, the Dallas alumnae will continue to organize events that will allow visiting Alpha Sigs to enjoy Dallas and the surrounding area. "We are all so excited about the convention," Betty said. "Hope to see y'all there!"

NEW S TO Two new colonies join A~A The Alpha Sigma Alpha National Council recently announced the addition of two new colonies. Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, has 1,200 students on its 215-acre rural campus. The prtvate, liberal arts and sciences, Presbytertan-affliatied school is located approximately 70 miles from Columbus, Ohio. Thirty-eight women were pledged in the colonization, which was conducted Aprtl12, 1997, by Sharon Buscetta, .1H, leadership consultant and Michelle Wile, EA. colony development director. The group began as an interest group. The colony joins one other National Panhellenic Conference sorortty, three local sorortties and five local and national fraternities on the campus. University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo, CO, has about 3,700 students on its 275-acre campus. Southern Colorado is a public, regional university with a polytechnic emphasis. The campus is located at the north end of the city of Pueblo, which is just south of Colorado Sprtngs. The colonization of the 25-woman group took place Sept. 19, 1997, by Patti Balwanz, B2, leadership consultant, and Kathleen Collopy Miller, Af, colony development director. Alpha Sigma Alpha will be the first sorority on campus and will join two national fraternities . Expected installation for both colonies is Sprtng 1998.

Author of national hymn dies Helen Selvage Noblitt, XX, author of the Hymn of Alpha Sigma Alpha died Oct. 2, in Fort Myers, FL. A graduate of Teachers College of Indianapolis, Helen was a charter member of the early Chi Chi Chapter at the teachers college, which later became Butler University. The chapter was later re-established at Ball State University. Muncie, IN, in large part due to the efforts of the ortginal

chapter members, including Helen. It is currently inactive. A teacher for 40 years, Helen was the author of several published Helen Selvage Noblitt, XX songs, including the hymn. She was a long-time member of the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter, and generations of Indiana ALA collegians were taught how to sing the hymn by Helen herself at state days and other statewide functions . "Mother always talked about her A2A girls till the very end," said her daughter Quinta G. West, "She loved you all and all that A'i.A stood for."

A~A web site up and running The Alpha Sigma Alpha web site at www.alphasigmaalpha.org is up and running with information about the sorortty's history, officers, policies and chapters. It features the new look of the sorortty, unveiled this past summer at the Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institutes. In addition, this year all chapter consultants are traveling with laptop computers. This enables them to correspond via e-mail with chapters, national officers and national headquarters and show alumnae and collegians the features of the new web site.

News from headquarters The long-range planning committee, under the direction of Linda Bonine Rogers, M, is currently undergoing a facilities review. The sorortty has nearly outgrown its current location, and the committee is examining relocation in Sprtngfield, MO, St. Louis and Indianapolis. In other news, Andrea J. Tunia, EI, director of collegiate chapter services, resigned her position as of Aug. 22, 1997. Andrea had held the position since its inception in 1993. Mama Ridenour, AA, chapter development coordinator, will also serve as intertm director until the position is filled.

lpha Sigma Alphas across the nation took part this past summer in the fifth biennial Emma Coleman Fros Leadership Development Institutes. With the emphasis on change, introduced during the institutes were a new look and positioning statement for the national organization as well as a new collegiate officer structun The purpose of the Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institutes is to allow collegiate women to realize their full potential within their chapters and on campus. Under the supervision of the programming committee, Silvanna Filippello Richardson, r A, vice president of programming, and Andrea Tunia, EI, former directc of collegiate chapter services, registration increased to lO participants per chapter. At each site, there were approximately 180 participants. These were the largest institutes to date. The four regional sites were at Southwest Missou State University in Springfield, June 20-23; Towson State University in Baltimore, MD, June 27-29; North Park College in Chicago, June 27-29; and Pennsylvania State University-Hazelton, July 25-27. Many national officers facilitated workshops on topics related to change, committee meetings and the new officer structure. A new workshop that was introduced this year at all four sites was a ritual program. During the activity, the collegians broke up into small groups and were assigned one of the four exemplars for which they designed a PR plan or a slogan. On Friday night, a special presentation was given to introduce Alpha Sigma Alpha's new image and positioning statement, "Every member makes a difference. " A new video and song completed the unveiling. "Seeing the new image renewed my spirit in Alpha Sigma Alpha," said Shannon Priddy, AB. "It really gave me a feeling of connection between collegiate chapters and the national organization." On Saturday morning, was a low ropes course full of fun and challenging team-building activities. Participants could take these activities back to their chapters and use the exercises during chapter retreats to encourage leadership, communication and teamwork. Saturday afternoon was spent in workshops discussing the new officer structure, the committee system and how to help your chapter adjust to change. That evening a workshop, entitled 'True Colors," was presented. Collegians were able to find out how their particular personality traits linked to a specific color. It also allowed them to learn about how other "colors" think, feel and act. The evening concluded with sisterhood songs. The Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institutes are funded by registration fees, the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation and the national organization.

A fund-raiser at my husband's alma mater used to say that the college was not in the business of raising money for, if it were. there would be very little reason for anyone to give. He would go on to say they were in the business to equip students to live their lives to the fullest. Throughout the first decade of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation, I've often felt we were in the business of raising money. "Starting from scratch" just over 10 years ago. we had an extreme need to just raise money to get the foundation up and running and build up a reserve on which to base our operations. I was often fru strated that we were not able to invest money in the development of the lives of our collegians and alumnae. Thanks to the generosity of our members, for the frrst time this year, we were able to tum the tables from an organization that primarily asked for money to one that was able to do something for our members. I now feel I can say we are no longer in the business of raising money. but are in the business of supporting our collegians and alumnae in their quest to 'joyously live each day to its ultimate good." Annual contributions have more than doubled from last year. However. only about 1 percent of our members cu rrently support the foundation. If we could increase that to just 5 percent, what a difference it wou ld make in our ability to support the sorority and its members. During the past year we were able to support: • Scholarships • The S. June Smith Center • The launch of the extremely successful ''Taking It Personally" program • Anniversary gifts to libraries on campuses where our chapters had major anniversaries • Sending chapter leaders to attend the Undergraduate lnterfratemity Institute • Sorority programming Just as "Every member makes a difference" for the sorority, "every dollar makes a difference" for the foundation and the communi ty we serve. Contributions increase for S. June Smith Center Support from generou s alumnae and collegians for the S. June Smith Center has grown dramatically in recent years. During the past year, there was a 78 percent increase in contributions. The contributions were generous enough to buy therapy equipment for the classrooms at the center Paula Foreman , PP and a new computer. The S. June Smith Center, named after former Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation Trustee, Dr. S. June Smith , KK, was adopted as a national philanthropy at the ! 990 national convention. The center has services to foster child development and family support for children with special needs. The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation works closely with the center to determine their most pressing needs. A recent thank you letter from the executive director of the center's foundation stated, "I understand the tremendous amount of work and commitment involved in raising fu nds and sincerely thank everyone at Alpha Sigma Alpha for their efforts to support our children." Foundation scholarships available for graduates, undergraduates The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation annually awards up to 12 scholarships to members of the sorority and one non-member. Kimberly Taylor, BB, University of Northern Colorado, winner of one of last year's scholarships wrote, "This scholarship will truly help me to achieve success in all of Alpha Sigma Alpha's four ainns. l know the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation is doing a tremendous part in fulfilling the dreams of all Alpha Sigma Alpha women. Lending a helping hand

The women of Alpha Chapter and the men of Phi Kappa Tau team up to put on an Easter egg hunt for children in Farmville , VA. Alpha, Longwood College, VA

Leadership and service fill semester Alpha Chapter planned a holiday party for underprivileged children of the area last December with the men of Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Hampden Sydney College. In February, chapter members served as Special Olympic buddies. In March, an Easter egg hunt was held for the children of Farmville. Fun and funds for S. June Smith Center In March, Beta Kappa Chapter held its annual contest for the S. June Smith Center. Contestants from fraternities and campus athletes were judged in three categories by the presidents of campus sororities. Through entry fees and ticket sales, Beta Kappa raised $1,500 for the S. Greek week winners Beta Gammas were big winners during Greek week 1997. Members played football, basketball, softball, volleyball and soccer. For community service, they participated in a clean-up of the Illinois River. Other events were the talent show and the academic bowl. The chapter did not win every event, but its overall point totals made them the winners.

Within the community, the chapter participated in the multiple sclerosis walk. Beta Nu Chapter participated in the 45th annual campus sing sponsored by Sigma Alpha Iota, a music sorority. Thirteen groups sang and danced on the steps of the Lovett Auditorium with show tunes, jazz and rock 'n roll. An excellent spring Beta Sigma Chapter won the campus Stliving for Excellence Award for the third consecutive year for excelling in the areas of council management, membership development, risk management and community service/philanthropic endeavors. Following this award, the chapter won Greek week 1997 with the highest level of participation of all chapters on campus. Women's history month events Gamma Mu Chapter joined the Adrian College community in celebrating women's history month. Chapter educates EIU community Gamma Omega Chapter sponsored an educational program on the date-rape drug known as Rohypnol. Eric Davidson, EIU peer educator, facilitated the session about this controversial drug, its effects and intended victims. Vice President Tracy Nickless planned this event, which drew non-Greek participants to the Alpha Sigma Alpha house for the evening. Service to others Delta Epsilons assisted the American Red Cross Blood Drive, Adopt-A-Friend and the Special Olympics this year. Members are involved with many campus organizations and activities including softball, basketball, field hockey, athletic training, the campus radio station and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Rushing into spring Delta Etas put together a comprehensive sprtng rush. Members worked together to inform the campus about rush by putting up flyers, having informational tables in the cafeteria and doing a chalk walk. A creed to live by Delta Nu-A Chapter held several activities that incorporated the creed and four aims of the sorority. In February, the chapter gathered for a retreat with the Creed of Alpha Sigma Alpha as the theme of the evening. Members were divided into different groups, and each group represented a different verse of the Creed. Each created a skit that they felt conveyed the true meaning of the verse. Zeta Gammas participated in the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association dance marathon. Graduate presentation wins award Eta Eta alum Janette J . OToole's graduate presentation, entitled "Creating a Picture of Your Ideal Student Affairs Job," recently was named Best Graduate Presentation of the Kansas Student Personnel Conference. The presentation was then selected by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) to be presented at its national convention this past March. Janette received her master's degree in counselor education from Emporia State University in May 1997. She worked as a graduate teaching assistant for student support services, working with low-income, first generation college students, learning disabled students and physically challenged students. She served as chapter advisor for Delta Phi Epsilon, the university's newest sorority, and as Greek Week advisor for the Washburn University Greek System in Topeka,

KS. She also served as vice president and alumni chair for the Student Personnel Association at Emporia State. Janette received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Pittsburg State University in Pitsburg, KS. As an undergraduate, she was president, vice president, province day chairman and assistant rush chairman for Eta Eta. She also served on panhellenic and Greek councils, and was named the 1995 Outstanding Greek Woman. Janette recently accepted a position as residence hall director at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, OK.

Teacher recently retires After 30 years of teaching in Missouri public schools, Norma Long Clark, Phi Phi, recently retired. Norma was in the 1994 Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Thirty years ago, she co-founded the Maryville, MO. Jack and Jill Nursery School, which still exists today. Currently treasurer of the Maryville Alumnae Chapter, Norma has held all offices of the organization. While an undergraduate at Northwest Missouri State University, she was president of Phi Phi Chapter. Norma always has been active in her community. She was president in 1996 of the Maryville Women's

Norma Long Clark, <l><l> Golf Association, co-chair of the 1988 and 1996 Women's Invitational GolfToumaments, board member, secretary and president of Maryville Community Teachers Association and board member and president of the Maryville Country Club. Norma lives in Maryville, MO. Now that she is retired, she is looking forward to doing more reading, needlework, traveling and golfing.

Alumna wins service award Tina Chasteen Stillwell, Beta Sigma, recently was awarded the Excellence in Community Service Award from Southwest Missouri

State University. The award is presented to employees of SMSU for their contributions to community efforts. Her contributions include chairing the Project Review and Development Committee of the Junior League of Springfield, serving as a volunteer for Rape Crisis Center of the Ozarks, organizing the Springfield, MO, Festival of Lights and First Night celebrations and serving on the board of Dogwood Trails Girl Scout Council. She is an elder at National Avenue Christian Church and serves on the SMSU English Department Advisory Council. She also has served on the board of directors for Community Hospices of America, Springfield Ballet and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Ozarks. Tina is a board member of the Beta Sigma Chapter Housing Corporation and has held several offices, including president, of the Springfield Alumnae Chapter. She received a bachelor's degree in writing and a master's in English from SMSU. Tina is the director of the SMSU news services office. overseeing the gathering and distributing of university news to the media. Under her direction, the news services office has won several awards.
