very member makes a diffmmce. You see these five words used all the time in Alpha Sigma Alpha. Is this just another cool vision or positioning statement or are we really making a difference in the world around us? I personally think they are words to take to heart, words to live by. You may not be a surgeon who is literally saving lives all day long. You may not be a scientist who is on the verge of discovering the next vaccine that will save thousands of lives, but I believe it is the little things we do in our everyday life that really make a difference. When I look into the eyes of my year old twins when I am reading to them, I know I have made a difference in their young lives. When I give to the local food pantry or when I give to the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation, I know I am making a difference in someone's life. We all face new challenges, new directions and new roads in life all the time where we can choose to make a difference. My new challenge in life, as editor of the Phoenix, is to provide you with what you need in a national publication. I hope, in some small way, to make a difference in the lives of our readership. You too can make a difference in the Phoenix magazine by writing or emailing me with your ideas and your feedback. If you are not interested in writing, there are several ways you can make a difference in Alpha Sigma Alpha. For more infonnation on how you can make a difference to our sorority see the articles on page 30 and page 33. It's never too late to change your direction, change the road you are on in life and make a difference. In the words of one of my favorite poets Robert Frost, " ... Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." What road did you choose in life? Has it made a difference? Are you making a difference today?

BY MARGARET BARGE RIMEL, ilH Contributing Writer nee again, Alpha Sigma Alpha made history in Ri ch mond, VA. From June 28-July 2, 2000, more than 400 women made the pilgrimage to Virginia for the sorority's centennial convention. The convention kicked off the sorority's 18-month-long centennial celebration, wh ich will culminate with coordinated regional Founders' Day celebrations during November 2001. During the four, fun-filled days, collegiate and alumnae members focused on sharing common h istory and reuniting with sisters from college days, alumnae groups and past conventions. Wednesday night the sorority's past presidents were inu·oduced and featured. While the younger members "partied like it's 1999," oth er "more seasoned" Alpha Sigma Alphas sported flapper dresses, poodle skirts, disco gear and Madonna-wannabe attire for the "Step Back in Time" dance on Wednesday n igh t. And while there were a couple of well-meaning gents (dance instructo1·s) uying to encourage members onto the dance floor, their efforts

Of course, no dance would be complete without a massive group hug and sway to the tune of"We Are Family." The "Parade of Flags" took place during opening ceremonies on Thursday, where each chapter (including those now closed) presented a flag portraying the chapter symbolism. Introductions of special guests were made.

The convention events were broken down by historic periods. Throughout the business meetings and social events, the choir introduced Alpha Sigma Alpha songs made popular in different decades. These were paired with the "Defining Moments" video and live drama presentations. The talented volunteer acting troupe outlined dramatic times during the sorority's history. Six videos were shown throughout the event that featured events from sorority history. Who knew what scandal and politics occurred when the sorority met in secret to remove Ida

Shaw Martin as president and install Wilma Wilson Sharp as her successor? It was not just the intrigue of turbulent times that enthralled us. Imagine how the founders felt when establishing the sorority. Their values remain the core of the organization today. During the Panhellenic luncheon on Thursday, representatives from the 25 NPC sororities joined tl1e members as Sherry Tilley, Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation vice president of philanthropy, addressed the sorority. Her comments focused on the need for sororities to stand together
and preserve Greek life and heritage. She compared separate sororities to sticks; sticks by themselves can easily be broken but when tied together, they are much tougher and resilient. Sherry also hinted at some commonalties between Zeta Tau Alpha, also a Farmville Four sorority, and Alpha Sigma Alpha. That afternoon, Alphas traveled along "Route AkA," a.k.a., the Marketplace. "l ATe were encouraged to walk where the V V founders walked. And so we did, hundreds of Alpha Sigma Alphas strolling around the Longwood College, Farmville, VA, campus on June 30,2000. The tour began in the courtyard behind Ruffner Hall, where the founders lived and met when forming the sorority in the early 1900s. Women lined the outdoor balcony and crowded the stairs and lawn as the convention group photograph was taken. From there everyone dispersed to find their own way around the historic campus. First stopping to take pictures at the historic marker that recognizes Longwood College as the only U.S. school where four national sororities were founded. Then strolling past the Rotunda, where each of the four sororities has placed a bronze plaque. Many made their way directly to the Grand Dining Hall, where a buffet lunch was served. A few were lucky enough to snap a group photograph of all the eight past presidents who attended the 2000 Centennial Convention just outside the hall. Others had the privilege to eat with the founders ' relatives who attended the lunch and presentations later in the afternoon. Founders' family members at Longwood were W.S. Hundley Jr. and Nancy Hundley, nephew and niece of Mary Williamson Hundley; Roberta Boyd Dunn, greatniece of Virginia Boyd Noell; and Lucy Waller Gilliam Crockin, daughter ofJuliette Jefferson Hundley Gilliam. After lunch it was time for more walking. An especially popular stop was for photographs at the Farmville Four clock, erected as a joint effort by the four sororities in honor of each of their Centennial years. The four-sided cast aluminum street clock sits next to the Longwood Library. From the site of the clock, many then walked on to the Stubbs Residence Hall, location of the Alpha Chapter suite. Members of the Alpha Chapter greeted visitors and showed off their meeting room.
The Farmville Four clock was a popuwr attraction during the visit to Longwood College. The A'i.A ''face" of the clock was dedicated during ceremonies at Longwood College. Posing with this famous lo,ndmark are from left, Sidney Gremillion Allen, '1''1', Nancy Szalwinski, Bll, Suzanne Withososky Alfonso, NN and Betty Urban Wallick, ZZ.
Then it was back toward the center of campus for a photo opportunity at the Alpha Sigma Alpha Memorial Garden, perched above ground level next to the South Cunningham Residence Hall. The garden, dedicated in 1958, contains a bench and bird bath, dedicated in 1936 in honor of the sorority's 35th anniversary. Last stop on the tour was Jarman Auditorium, where there were special presentations to the relatives of the founders, the dedication of the clock as well as the first of 100 philanthropic projects- a truckload of groceries for the St. Theresa Food Pantry. Yet another presentation by the Defining Moments cast was the last item on the program before the buses loaded and the day at Longwood was over.

Keynote speaker Patricia Russell McCloud wowed her audience with her motivational speech. Her inspiring words were extracted from her book, "A is for Attitude, an Alphabet for Living." That evening was the Centennial Gala, where additional sorority awards were presented and the 2000-02 national council was installed. The evening ended in a toast to Alpha Sigma Alpha: "As women, and members of Alpha Sigma Alpha, may we continually aspire to strengthen the bonds of our sisterhood. May we seek to make a difference in the world by seiVing others. And as we look toward our future , may we challenge ourselves to attain, not only our goals, but also our dreams. FOUNDERS' DAY MESSAGE
Embrace change for the growth of the sorority BY MARIANNE BUSCH BULLOCK, BE> National President ramatic change in society has occurred in the 99 years since Alpha Sigma Alpha's founding. Early in the century, radio signals were first transmitted. People rarely traveled far from home as few had automobiles and long distances were typically covered by ship or train. It was rare for women to get college educations. Since then we have seen a technological revolution in voice and data transmission that allows people to communicate easily on a global basis. Traveling from state to state is as easy as hopping in your car or, better yet, jetting to your destination by plane. It is not only common for women to attend college, we are working in fields as diverse as medicine, science, politics, manufacturing, education, computer technology and publishing. Change eliminates the boundaries of the past. But change can bring fear. Many people would preserve the status quo in their relationships, jobs and living conditions rather than embrace change for the sake of growth . Alpha Sigma Alpha's founders knew the importance of embracing change by bravely starting an organization that would grow beyond their wildest dreams. As the early Alpha Sigma Alphas watched the sorority evolve, its leaders took fearless steps to ensure Alpha Sigma Alpha would be successful for generations. Turning points like 1914 stand out as times of change for Alpha Sigma Alpha. With only the mother chapter still active, in 1914 the sorori ty reorganized in order to survive and later made the strategic move to focus on teachers' colleges. It must have been frightening, yet exhilarating, for members who were working to rebuild the sorority! Another turning point for the sorority was in 1930. That year Alpha Sigma Alpha made dramatic changes in the leadership of the organization to ensure that it could
D

FAll2000
move forward, led by its members. These women worked on the organization's infrastructure and designed a new constitution. Wilma Wilson Sharp wrote the Creed which has served as a guideline not only for how we live as Alpha Sigma Alphas, but in our current strategic planning efforts. In 1947 the sorority took another step forward by joining the National Panhellenic Conference to ensure the Greek sorority system continued to thrive. Joining NPC was also a strategic mo\7e for Alpha Sigma Alpha that allowed it to continue its growth efforts. This year- 2000-is another turning point for Alpha Sigma Alpha. Leaders are thinking more strategically about the organization than ever before. Alpha Sigma Alpha is making dramatic changes in the level of service we offer and how we provide a quality sorority experience to members. Alpha Sigma Alpha is a prominent organization in providing leadership development opportunities for women that will not only make a difference in their lives but also allow them to make a difference in the lives of others. The strategic plan has been developed and we are in the implementation stage. Strategic goal areas covering advisory boards, membership communication, academic excellence, social responsibility, volunteer development, organization image, administration, membership growth, leadership and personal development and governance have been discussed. Objectives and a plan of work have been developed. Now comes the fun of putting all these plans and goals into action. Will it be challenging and stressful? Yes. Will it be worth it? Yes! Change can induce fear, especially if you lose sight of your goal. Imagine the fear of the trapeze artist who leaps blindfolded into the air, hoping her parmer will catch her. But the trapeze artist knows she will be caught- she and her parmer have built trust and worked together to ensure the goal will be met.
Marianne Busch Bullock
There may be times when an individual's sorority work is so focused she loses sight of the goal. But be assured that your work is part of the bigger plan and your parmers will help you reach that goal. Your job may be to communicate the benefits of Alpha Sigma Alpha to a prospective member and ask her to join. You may be involved in advisor training. or work on recognition programs for academic achievement. You could be a speaker at a regional conference. Your work benefits Alpha Sigma Alpha by helping the organization change and grow. As Alpha Sigma Alphas, we must work together to ensure the continued success of the sorority. It's not up to national council, staff, national officers, advisors, alumnae or collegians alone to take responsibility for the sorority. It takes all of us, working together, to build Alpha Sigma Alpha. Take a moment this Founders' Day to plan how you will become involved in securing Alpha Sigma Alpha's growth. Remember the brave steps the women before us have taken for our sorority. Embrace change and become a part of this exciting process. Happy Founders' Day. THE PHOENIXOF ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA
fOUNDATION
UIFI challenge kicked off at the Centennial convention BY LESLIE MAXWELL ZIRINGER, fH Foundation Board Chairman '~dream lasts an eternity." The
founders had dreams and it is so exciting to see how far these dreams have come. As we enter into a second century of dreams, the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation has embarked on a challenge to continue the purpose and ideals set for collegians and alumnae. The Foundation is committed to investing in the future of the sorority! One of the ways we would like to do this is to, in the words of Lois V. Beers, Br, "challenge" our alumnae to sponsor an Alpha Sigma Alpha collegian to attend the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI). What a wonderful way to form a bond between a collegian and an alumna. The UIFI program is recognized as the premiere leadership institute available to Greek students. The National Interfraternity Conference coordinates the program. Each summer 10 sessions are offered to Greek men and women from across the country. Students come together for a five-day experience that begins by looking at individual leadership skills. The program then moves to examining what can be accomplished when members come together. The next phase is exploring the responsibility as Greek members to the larger global community. And the experience ends with discussion of the difference one person can make and the responsibilities each person has to make that difference every day. It is a powerful experience that prepares students to confront challenging issues they face in their daily lives. Our "challenge" is to send one Alpha Sigma Alpha from each collegiate chapter to the program during the next two years. In the spring term, each chapter will be asked to nominate a member to receive the scholarship for their chapter. The registration cost for the program is $450. Each student will need to provide her own

transportation to Indianapolis where the program is held. To sponsor one of these scholarships, simply contact the Foundation at 317-8712920 or foundation@alphasigmaalpha.org. You may take one or two years to complete your pledge. If you wish to sponsor your own chapter we will honor that request. Or you may be willing to sponsor one of our newest chapters or a chapter in your area. The college women of today are Alpha Sigma Alpha's future, and the better prepared they are, the more successful the sorority will become. The purpose as a Foundation is to provide educational and leadership opportunities for Alpha Sigma Alphas. The sorority develops women of poise and purpose. Together, investing in each other, we will make a difference. Become a part of this very special group of alumnae who will sponsor a UIFI scholarship. The return to you will be the knowledge that you have helped a young woman realize her potential and fulfill her dreams.

New colonies update Alpha Sigma Alpha is proud to announce that it will be adding two new colonies in Iowa this fall. AlA will be expanding on the Coe College campus in Cedar Rapids, IA. Coe College is a private coeducational residential college and is ranked among the top 100 liberal arts colleges in America. Alpha Sigma Alpha will also be colonizing on the Loras College campus in Dubuque, IA, in the fall. The sorority is seeking a new province director for this fast growing region in Iowa. If you are interested please contact Director of Chapter Services Kelly Miller 317-871-2920 or kmiller@alphasigmaalpha.org. The Niagara Colony is well on its way to becoming a chapter. The colony performed the Phoenix degree and accepted 48 new women. Late breaking news- Alpha Sigma Alpha will add yet another new colony! The sorority will be colonizing on the campus of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN, this fall.
New alumnae chapters Alpha Sigma Alpha now has three new alumnae chapters in the process of obtaining their charter; The Indy City, IN, Alumnae Chapter, Nova, VA, Alumnae Chapter and the North Central New Jersey Alumane Chapter. Congratulations to all the alumnae who have put a great deal of time and effort into forming these new alumnae chapters.

Included are numerous video clips of historic events and people and several hundred photographs. Starting this winter, every new member and every chapter executive board officer will receive a copy of the CD-ROM. The Alph a Sigma Alpha CD-ROM may also be purchased by any member for $25. For more information abou t th is disk or to purchase a copy, contact national headquarters 317-871-2920 or asa@alphasigmaalpha.org.

Great committees made for a great convention The Centennial convention was a huge success. Many thanks go to the Convention committee and the Centennial committee for all of the ir hard work. Many thanks to the Phoenix staff for their hard work on the Centennial newsletter, the headquarters
staff and all the volunteers who made this convention a very memorable convention.

If interested please fill out a volunteer interest form online at www.alphasigmaalpha.org or send a letter of interest to Alpha Sigma Alpha National Headquarters at: 9001 Wesleyan Rd. , Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
New 2002 convention site At the Centennial convention in Richmond it was announced that the 2002 national convention would be held in Indianapolis, IN. Keep your eye on the next few issues of the Phoenix to find out what exciting des tination wi ll be selected for the 2002 national convention. The search is underway and an announcement will be made as soon as the city and hotel have been confirmed.

Director ofExtension and Alumnae Services o you remember why you joined Alpha Sigma Alpha? Was it the love the members had for their sorority? Was it for the friendships you had with members that bonded you to Alpha Sigma Alpha in your collegiate days? You can have all that and much more today by joining a local alumnae chapter! With today's busy lifestyles, you may think you don't have the time to devote to an alumnae chapter. You may be reminded of all those mandatory events that took place within the chapter during your collegiate years. Well you may be pleasantly surprised to know that alumnae life is not like college life. Alumnae participation requires only what you can give. Alumnae life will, however, provide you with those friendships that you had in college. If you can be a dues paying, fully involved member, that is great, but most alumnae chapters are happy to have you join at whatever commitment level you are comfortable with at this point in your life. Many alumnae chapters support their area collegiate chapter. If there is not a collegiate chapter in the area, they support each other. Many chapters get together for different gatherings just to have fun. Other chapters have a strong focus on community involvement. The most important thing to remember is that the women in the alumnae chapters are staying involved in the sorority they love. Most chapters balance activities to include networking opportunities, social, spiritual and philanthropy events. By staying involved, you will be amazed at the women you will meet and the friendships you will make! By supporting or starting an alumnae chapter, you are helping the entire sorority expand. By helping Alpha Sigma Alpha expand, you are ensuring a strong future for the organization! Starting an alumnae chapter is fun and easy. All you need is five women, and you are on your way to becoming an alumnae chapter. If you would like more information on how to start an alumnae chapter in your area, contact national headquarters to obtain a free packet of information. The packet includes a list of all the alumnae in your area. Also included in the packet are the steps to take to start a chapter in your area. There are also great programming ideas, petition for alumnae chapter, new alumnae chapter officer report and sample letters that can be sent to alumnae in the area. We include a current listing of alumnae chapters across the country and a list of current natonal officers and contact information . A new service that the headquarters staff provides is sending the first round of correspondence to area members for you, so there is no costs involved to get started. To obtain information on how to contact an existing alumnae chapter or how to start a new one, contact Lesa Hedinger-Hamm, Director of Extension and Alumnae Services, 9001 Wesleyan Rd. Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46268; 317-871-2920; alumnae@alphasigmaalpha.org. Stay informed and connected- start or join an alumnae chapter today!
