Compressed Screen
All about Shadow Puppetry
PiYingXi (shadow puppetry) Shadow play which is also known as shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets) which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of the puppets sometimes include translucent color or other types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. A talented puppeteer can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod and laugh. Shadow play is popular in various cultures, among both children and adults in many countries around the world. Currently there are more than 20 countries known to have shadow show troupes. Shadow play is an old tradition and it has a long history in Southeast Asia; especially in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia. It has been an ancient art and a living folk tradition in China, India and Nepal. is also known in Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Germany, France and the United States.

Mapping
raising local problem Guidebook collections
MINI GUIDEBOOK REGENERATE PERFORMACE SPACE AS A COLLECTION OF URBAN CULTURAL INFORMATION During our initial site investigate it was observed that there was a large collection of cultural institutions surrounding the site. Most of the cultural institutions were never heard off and it’s almost hidden from the public. Through this I began to develope a theory that there were too many cultural institutions within the Sydney CBD creating a sense of confusion. I continued the investigation via mapping out the cultural confusion and conducting questionaires to testify my theory. Through the questionaire it was clear that the public was only aware of 2 - 3 / 55 of the cultural institutions. Hence, my design intention was to create a mini-guidebook that can represent the cultural pattern of the city to help visitors understand the cultural background of the Sydney CBD.

CONNECTION between plan and section
CONNECTION between line and circle
This drawing is utilised to show the relationship between the section and the plans of the building. The drawing shows the connection of circular spaces in different levels of the building and how the circular spaces influence its surroundings.
Utzon uses linear space to intensify the feelings of circular space.

extract information from grids (conclusion) connection [1] The matrix layout can be pieced into the plan of the building, which connect to Utzon’s concept of part and whole.
1. confused geometry 2. complex space 3. lack of linking
continunity [2] combine two small square grids, to form a real geometry in this design, it can actually give us a feeling of continunity. Thus, boundary,(eg. wlal) is used to create order in this disordered form.
location [3] utilizing 3 different levels of circle, to show the spacial location in different height, to get the relationship between circular space and wall.
plan [4] cut this design into five times, which would provide readers a clear plan in each level, which is able to show how circle related to each other in each level.
section [5] five sectional drawings are able to give readers a sense of how space overlap, also, Utzon utilized these circular space to make sure the continunity.
influence [6] the shape of the wall, is related to the three circles, which can be regard as anchor points, affecting the entire building design utilizling anchor points to keep the continunity of space, also, create a potential connection.

PHASE 3 Mapping Analysis
phase 3 applied those points learned from Utzon by reanalysing the CBD map.
Site Analysis
mapping Location Analysis That site has been chosen sit on the edge of city, which can be divided into cultural rich or poor part(based on the amount of cultural institutions), also, one side is for business, the other side is for resisdence. Thus, this edge could be regarded as a buffer zone, but, due to its location, it might be lose governance, which might create some disorder situation
Site Photos (disorder situation) [1] hard to control them, might hurt innocent pedestrian.

dim lighting
[2] dim lighting situation might increase the crime rate in site.
[3] broken pieces would increase the feelings of disorder, whichmight lead to vicious circle.

[4] Keeping messy space in the Domain allows bed bugs to thrive.
[5] dirty infrastruture might push people away from this space.
Site Analysis
problems solving process Cultural confusion in CBD cultural institutions could affect their surroundings in a certain distance, however, it might create some confusion if there is too much information at one time, which might create some disorder situation.
Finding anchor points mapping out those cultural museums in CBD, treating them as anchor points, thus, other cultural institutions could be understood by knowing those anchor points first, which might decrease disorder situation in some way.

An alternative Method was utilised to compress all the information into a miniguide book. This is presented in the form of a 2D screen. The 2D screen acts as a miniguide book to clean up the cultural disorder and thus arise the conceptual framework of the project; Compress screen.

Meanwhile, cultural information could be showed in this way, through their transporation or living stytle.
