Don’t be afraid of the dark
Daring Deeds: Cycling the Faroes
GET READY FOR WINTER: TIPS. TORCHES. GEAR. GET TO OUR SHOPS: AMBLESIDE. HATHERSAGE. ONLINE.
The everyone’s ‘ a winner’ Issue. ISSUE 06: OUTPOST BY ALPKIT. WINTER 2017.
Falling for the Lakes We’re all drawn to the supposedly ‘big’ destinations; the Alps, Norway, or even further afield. But driving past the Lakes towards Scotland sometimes makes us feel disloyal.
We’re always looking for a thin excuse to spend some time in the hills, sorry, no, er, we always need to test new kit, yes, that’s it. That sounds almost believable written down.
The Lakes draws us back again and again. It has the capacity to surprise and inspire even the most experienced of us. Also, crucially, it has very good cafés (more of that in a bit). We love the Lakes, which is one of the reasons why we’ve opened a shop in Ambleside. Yes, another shop, have we mentioned that? Sorry, we’ve been mentioning it quite a lot, we’re quite excited about it.
So we revisited a couple of familiar fells right from our Ambleside shop. The Lakes did what the Lakes do brilliantly: rain, sun, clouds and general gloriousness.

We walked the horseshoe anti-clockwise, which seems to be the consensus direction, but don’t let us dictate; there are plenty of route maps online, grab your map, your compass, some Alpkit gear and enjoy your day in whichever direction you want.

The big classic walks are, well, big and classic, but don’t turn your nose up at the relatively modest fells either. Even if you’ve done it before, Loughrigg Fell is an utter gem – it’s less than 400m high, but offers cracking 360° views from the trig point at the summit. Again, you can walk it right from Ambleside. It makes for a great morning or afternoon hike, or if you’re feeling sprightly, a decent run.
One of the best things about walking from Ambleside is that you have to return to it. And it has cafés. Win. We have to doff our winter hats to the Rattle Gill Café – tucked away next to the river, just off North Road. The coffee and cakes almost induced as much of a poetic response as the lonely clouds we’d spent our walks watching.

We were there at the start of autumn. The trees were thinking about turning red and brown. The skies were beginning to show off in readiness for winter; clouds shifted from white to black. Shafts of light and rainbows joined in. All very Wordsworth.
Or, if you’re feeling really, really brave, and you have kids, take a deep breath, get them wrapped up and get them up a hill. Maybe bribe them with the promise of ice cream, that sometimes works.

The Fairfield Horseshoe is always worth it. There are lots of reasons for its popularity; it is easily accessible from Ambleside and the route is relatively simple (although navigation can always be tricky if the weather comes in). But as we paced along between Great Rigg and Heron Pike we decided that the ‘effort in’ versus ‘proper views’ ratio is particularly high. Once you’ve climbed onto the start of the horseshoe you have a good few hours up high to enjoy the magnificence of the wild fells.

ARIO CAVES STEPH DWYER AND FRIENDS PUSH FOR DEEPER DISCOVERIES UNDERNEATH SPAIN I draw a line in the sand, stumble over the slight frog in my throat, then look away in an attempt to distract us both from the sobering question, “so... how long shall we give you before we call rescue?” A token gesture, like one could really be rescued from the far side of a flooded cave passage this far underground! Tony though, seems unfazed, then again he is a well practiced diver in his element and as he says himself, “I have no imagination”. However, I do and our cave diver last year nearly died through no fault of his own, and to be honest that scared me. Cavers are tough, we have to be, we train our minds, our bodies and practice how to deal with stuff going pear-shaped in such remote and committing places but... stop it Steph! I pull my mind back in line, doubt or fear are luxuries one cannot afford down here. I mean even if one wanted to, ya can’t exactly opt out now, 650m beneath the mountains with 100s of metres of rope climbs between you and the surface. It’s the stuff that would drive some mad but the bravery required and discomfort of being cold, wet and chaffed after days spent camping underground are insignificant compared to the elation felt whilst doing original exploration.

To turn that corner and be the first human being to lose yourself into the enormity of the chamber you’ve just found, the gypsum crystals glistening as they catch your light, to name a passage that will stand the test of time in a system of world class significance is a privilege afforded to few nowadays. Hard won but amply rewarded. If Tony makes it, if he dives through and finds cave 2/7 it will be our Ario Dream come true. A success of historic proportions. READ MORE alpkit.com/deeds/ario-caves

CAMPSITE ENVY GUARANTEED WITH THIS SUPER SIMPLE, HEARTY VEGGIE DISH. Equipment: AliPots panset Koro stove (and gas) A knife TiMigos Spoon (= 2 tsp) Something to cut on
• • • • •
Dhal:
• 2 cups of red lentils • 6 cups of water • Turmeric, cumin (and Garam masala if you’re feeling fancy)
• A few knobs of butter • A couple of cloves of garlic • An onion • 1-2 green chillies, sliced (or more if you’re extremely brave)
1.AliPots Aluminium pan set £25
2. Koro Mountaineering stove £45
Chapatis: 2 cups of flour 1 cup of water (you might not need it all) A pinch of salt A bit more butter
• • • •
Instructions: Chop your onion, garlic and chillies, then fire up the stove and heat up your small frying pan. Pop the chopped veggies in the frying pan with a knob of butter and fry until the garlic is golden. Take off the heat, mix in the cumin, then set aside for a bit. Right, let’s start on those lentils. Turn your stove down to a low heat and pop your lentils, a knob of butter and the turmeric in the large pan along with 4 cups of water. Pop the lid on and bring to the boil, then allow to simmer on a low heat. Stir periodically and add more water when necessary. Whilst your lentils are cooking, make a start on that chapati dough. Mix the flour and salt
in your smaller pan. Add the water bit by bit, kneading as you go until you have a soft, elastic dough. Knead the mixture for another few minutes, then divide into 4-6 balls. Flatten the balls a little on the palm of your hand then shape them by tugging and rotating the dough until they’re no more than half a centimetre thick. Keep an eye on your lentils as you go. Hopefully your lentils will now be ready – they should be a thick, porridge-like consistency. If so, add in those vegetables that you fried up earlier and give it a good mix, put the lid back on to keep them warm. Pop your frying pan back onto the stove, add that last bit of butter and turn up the heat. Fry your chapatis in the frying pan one at a time and turn over when they start to go golden on the bottom (you have to keep an eye on them). Once they’re done, slather them with dhal and enjoy!

Fear of the dark isn’t irrational. Our caveman brains are wired to be apprehensive of things that go “growl” in the night. Wanting to curl up under a blanket and sit in front of the fire all winter is understandable. But we understand that our customers know what a missed opportunity this is. The hills are still there all winter, waiting. And this Outpost has the words ‘Win winter’ in big friendly letters across the front of it; the least we can do is help you get out there. Also, we don’t live in caves anymore. OK, maybe the odd person lives in a cave, but that’s their business. If it’s cold we have warm, protective clothes. If it’s wet we have waterproofs, and if it’s dark we have lights. Lots of lights, lightweight lights, powerful lights, camping lights, bike lights and lights you can go running with. The only thing you actually need to be afraid of is running out of batteries (cough, we sell those too). The right light for you will be one that offers you the best balance of brightness, weight and battery life. Obviously this depends on what you’re up to, we’ll illuminate some of the options on the next page (see what we did there?).
Developed and sourced by our own design team with feedback from leading runners, climbers, cyclists, mountaineers and SAR teams – our range of lights combine high power, long battery life and features designed to make life at night easier. Here’s a quick round-up of our more popular lights. There are more in our stores and online: alpkit.com/lighting

What is it? The Continuum Project makes it easy for you to donate your surplus outdoor kit directly to those who need it most. Basically, we want to find a home for those bits of kit that you feel are too good to just send to landfill but deserve a use beyond the charity shop. The idea is simple. You send us outdoor garments that you no longer use and we pass them on to charities who, in turn, give them directly to someone who needs them. Occasionally, when the garment is deemed no longer fit for its original purpose, they will be donated to scientific research projects relating to the outdoor industry and up/down-cycling projects. Who will receive your donated kit? To start with we have teamed up with three charities:
• Canaan Trust who help homeless people
• Playworks Scrapstore who ensure that any
scrap textiles, no longer fit for their original purpose, are used by artists, students and children to create something new.
We hope to expand this list further. To apply to become a partner charity, please send an email to ashleigh@alpkit.com to introduce yourself and specify your kit requirement and we will go from there. How to Donate Simply drop your kit off in the big red donation bins in our Hathersage or Ambleside stores, or use our super-slick, free returns system to send them to us here at Alpkit HQ. From there we just connect the dots... and get your kit to where it’s needed. Why do it? We want everyone to be able to go nice places and do good things, and if we can help you to help others do just that then we reckon that’s a pretty good thing.

I was turning over the classic ‘have I bitten off more than I can chew?’ monologue in my head as I trudged up to the col. My bag felt heavy and the only person I had bumped into on the way up had informed me that it was going to be -10 during the night, not what my forecast had said. I worked hard to control my anxiety, I wasn’t going back down so I would just 18 alpkit.com
have to deal with it. The sun set on one side and moon rose on the other. I found a suitable place to dig a bivvy spot out of the wind and settled in for a chilly night. I peered out of the tiny hole in my sleeping bag and watched my breath rise in the headtorch beam. It was still dark but I couldn’t sleep any more. Looking at the time on my phone I was a little
disappointed to see that it was only 3am. I slowly unwrapped myself from layers of down filled warmth and put on all the clothes I had brought up the mountain, slipping my warm feet into boots that were frozen stiff and glittering with ice crystals. I hadn’t checked the sunrise time this far north but figured I could kill some time cooking pasta and
packing up, I should start to see some light by 6.30am perhaps. It was cold enough to shut my headtorch battery down and I was surprised to see, when my eyes adjusted, that the whole mountain was illuminated by the full moon. I walked up to the summit of Bidein a’Ghlas Thuill and the ridge stretched out glowing in front of me. It was
ghostly and spectacular, but I had spent 11 hours in the dark and I was looking forward to some daylight. After waiting a long time for the sun to hit and the clouds to disperse I set off along the ridge. The wind was getting up and there didn’t seem to be anyone else on the mountain. Quickly discovering that I wasn’t able to stand up safely unroped, I decided to turn back. I had seen sunrise and made it to the highest point so was content with that, and I knew I would return. I descended and then made the drive over Applecross pass and headed towards Fort William through Glen Shiel, craning my neck up at the Five Sisters of Kintail. I must have driven that road 4 times and I’ve never actually seen those mountains,
until the last light skimmed the tops and was snuffed out. I snuck into the climber’s bar at the back of the Clachaig and made a beeline for the bench beside the fire. People came and went

I stopped in lay-bys to photograph the hills as the sunlight cut through windows in the booming clouds. Every time I thought I had the picture and set off driving, a new patch of light would appear and slide slowly over the valley sides. Inspecting maps and checking the route I overheard one of the clients being asked if they’d had a good day climbing, ‘we had a good day surviving’ he replied, and that was that. I was content to call this the end of my trip and settled down with warm food as the folk musicians began to play in the corner of the room.

CYCLING THE FAROES SAM, TOM, SAM AND TOBY RIDE THEIR LUCK WITH THE WEATHER I was adamant that we weren’t making our way to the Faroe Islands to be able to dangle our boots over a cliff edge, take an Instagram over the sea and tell people that we’d got lost and embraced our sense of ‘adventure’. No. We were heading to the Faroes to ride our bikes and take in as much of those magical islands as our eyes (and legs) would let us see. Fast forward 8 hours to Copenhagen airport, one of the best commercial airline flights into a country ever, and a logistical luggage nightmare with the amount of boxers I’d packed later, and there we were; sat dangling our legs over a cliff edge, our phones at the ready and embracing our sense of adventure. Damn you, Faroes. And there began our far too short tour of those steep and green islands. What those three days would then 20 alpkit.com
entail would quite possibly be the most cruisey, brew-fuelled, laugh-buckled ride between the best wild camp spots you could hope for. I feel I should be telling you of harrowing battles with headwinds, sharp northern rains and wet sandwiches. Bike packing in the north shouldn’t be anything but, right? But I can’t. What I can tell you, is that we had the only three days of sunshine the Faroes are allotted annually and we did our best to ditch the sandwiches in favour of local snack delicacies; dried fish biscuits. How you and a birdfeeder have helped people with dementia. The Alpkit Foundation supported a 10 week trial of the volunteer led nature café at the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust’s Nature Discovery Centre in Thatcham. Becky from the centre explains why the project was started: “We wanted to provide a relaxed, welcoming environment for people living with dementia and their loved ones to get together to experience nature through guided walks, wildlife watching and nature crafts and enjoy refreshments whilst enjoying our beautiful nature reserve.”
As an Alpkit customer you played a part in this – thank you. The Alpkit Foundation is 100% funded by you – around 1% of our monthly turnover goes into the pot. For someone living with dementia and their carer, the chance to socialise and engage in something positive offers real benefits. It’s a small step, but it makes a big difference – making a birdfeeder isn’t just making a birdfeeder. We’re always on the lookout to help with other small steps. We give money directly to those who need it. Yep, that’s right. Free money. Money that could make a massive difference to people. If you have a project, or know someone in your community who could benefit, get in touch. Now would be really good, we’re talking free money here. alpkit.com/foundation#apply

GOOD ADVICE:
Winter camping Keep getting out and about over winter with the Alpkit team’s top tips... 1. Take dry thermals and change into them as soon as you get in your tent. This stops your body from trying to evaporate the moisture in the clothes you’ve been wearing all day, so you’ll use less energy whilst you’re sleeping. Wizard!
2. Sticks instead of tent pegs When the ground is too snowy or frozen to peg your tent out conventionally, a foot-long stick threaded through the pegging loop and buried under the snow should do the trick.
3. Take an extra closed cell mat If you’re sleeping on a self-inflating mat, place a closed cell mat underneath to increase insulation (this also makes a handy back up in case of punctures).
4. Eat a hot meal but cook it outside of your tent when possible. Cooking inside your tent increases condensation within your tent, which will freeze overnight and melt again in the morning, getting your stuff all wet.
5. Don’t camp under snowy trees As much as anything laden with snow and icicles looks irresistibly idyllic, it could all fall on top of you and harm you in the night.
6. Choose the right fuel Butane vaporises at around freezing, whereas propane vapourises at about -40˚C. Thing is, no one’s got the energy to lug a big propane canister around. Instead, use ISO-butane and keep the canisters warm.
7. Air your sleeping bag When you, er, perspire in the night, your sleeping bag absorbs moisture which freezes. Air your sleeping bag regularly to avoid a build-up of moisture.
8. Take a dry bag for your socks and clothes, that way you can pop it in your sleeping bag at night to stop your stuff from freezing.
9. Don’t get snow in your tent Getting snow in your tent increases the amount of condensation. Brush off your clothes before getting in your tent to avoid getting more moisture in there than you need to.
10. Vent your tent by pitching it at 90˚ to prevailing winds. This creates an airflow in your tent and minimises condensation, you can also open and close the doors a little to control airflow.
