A new ALRA year - four plays, in this first term, across two ALRA theatres and a new group of talented students to watch. In Wandsworth there are two story-telling plays (the most important skill for actors); the haunting Grimm Tales and the exotic Arabian Nights, both suitable for all ages. In Wigan there is the evocative The Gut Girls, ideal for the Mill setting and ALRA’s first ever Christmas production – The Jungle Book, a family show with an extended run. Do come to spot tomorrow’s actors, to support your family and friends and, most of all, to be entertained.
venue: The Mill at the Pier, Wigan
This amateur production of ‘’The Gut Girls’ is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD.
the gut girls
Written by Sarah Daniels Directed by Joyce Branagh Ankle deep in blood, guts and entrails is how the Gut Girls earn their living; working thirteen hour days in the stinking gutting sheds in Deptford 1912. Society says it doesn’t get much worse than this and regard the Gut Girls as one step up from prostitutes. But these women are as tough as nails and full of spirit; they have to be! And they certainly won’t take being spoken down to by a man! So when Lady Helena takes pity on them after seeing their repellent working conditions, and attempts to genteelly reform the women with her after work club, very little she does appears to inspire them! But when the gutting shed closes Lady Helena is their only hope. However, in her bid to reform the women she strips them of any spirit society had allowed them. Which is worse, to work in filth or to be treated like it?

Jungle Book
This is a drama school production.
Based on the book by Rudyard Kipling Adapted by Max Webster Directed by Dee Evans
In the mysterious heat of the Indian jungle a boy lives amongst beasts. Reared by wolves, all Mowgli knows is the law of the jungle and that it must be obeyed. But as he grows and his dominance as a man becomes apparent, his life beneath the canopy is in danger as Shere Khan the tiger stalks the land and he is turned away from the wolf pack. This epic adventure of survival, companionship and raw animal instinct is reawakened for the stage, presenting Kipling’s much loved story in an imaginative way that brings the Jungle Book to life. A Christmas treat for all the family, Baloo the bear and Bahgeera the panther welcome you to their jungle!

by arrangement with Nick Hern Books
This is a drama school production.
Written by Dominic Cooke Directed by Titania Krimpas
The beautiful young Shahrazad possesses an extraordinary talent; the ability to tell a huge array of exciting and enchanting tales. Every night she delights her younger sister Dinarzad with wild stories of elephant eating birds, treasure filled caves and evil sorceresses. However, this talent is put to the test when it becomes the only thing coming between her and a death sentence ordered by the bitter King, whose laughter had become silent after the discovery of his Queen’s adultery. Will she perish like so many young girls before her or will her stories manage to unlock the gates to the kings guarded heart?
