ALRA Spring Season
featuring Oliver Twist Daisy Pulls It Off The Mandate The Beau Defeated and The Stage Management and Technical Theatre Showcase
WElcome
These four fast-paced plays are rich in story and humour, setting specific challenges for our students. In the South the excellent adaptation of Oliver Twist is tongue-in-cheek while Daisy Pulls It Off is an out and out spoof. This genre only works if there is truthfulness and depth of character throughout. Therefore the actors have been tasked to research Victorian London, the horrors of the workhouse and orphanages to prepare for Oliver. Private girls’ schools, life between World Wars and comic books have been the focus for Daisy Pulls It Off. The challenge in the North is comedy; The Mandate - a political satire, reaches farcical proportions with mistaken identities, pans stuck on heads and guns going off unexpectedly. The Beau Defeated - a restoration comedy, is a social satire peopled with extreme characters. Again, the truthfulness of the situations and the believability of the characters must be found, while the context of 1920’s Russia and 1700 Britain is understood. Without which the audience will not see the relevance of these plays today. Whatever your reason for watching – talent spotting, supporting the students or wanting to watch a well written play – hopefully you will be able to see the scope of background work which has gone into each of these productions.
oliver twist Written by Charles Dickens Adapted by Jeremy Brock Directed by Roman Stefanski Doomed to a miserable fate since the day he was born, the story of young Oliver Twist begins in the bleakest of places. Crushing bones for manure he lives in a squalid workhouse with the cruellest of masters. Delirious from hunger and scared for his life, he utters those fateful words “Please sir can I have some more? Follow Oliver on his perilous journey, down the shady streets of Victorian London, through the pockets of the seemingly un-aware and in to the plotting mind of the dangerous Bill Sykes. Friendship and kindness can be found along the way but as always there is a hefty price to pay!

the mandate Written by Nikolai Erdman Adapted by Declan Donnellan Directed by Chris Hill
It’s 1924 and Moscow sits at the heart of the Communist regime, the Soviet Union is in its infancy and the revolution has almost been forgotten… Living in fear of the regime and having little understanding of it, the Guliachkin family pretend to be communist in order to hide their bourgeois origins. However, Nadejda the mother of the family is determined to marry her daughter in to a group of closet Tsarist romantics, but with no money for a dowry instead they are asked to provide the family with a ‘live-in’ communist, their son – Pavel, who in his quest to appear genuine brandishes his mandate to whoever and wherever he goes. But the plot thickens and the farce unfolds as the family try to rustle up a group of fake communist relations in order to prove their authenticity, the cook is mistaken for a Russian princess – the missing Anastasia and their lodger constantly threatens to bring in the militia because a pan of noodles fell on his head! Acclaimed by the commissioner of culture as “The first truly Soviet play” The Mandate’s farcical energy and cunning plot is sure to entertain.

the beau defeated Written by Mary Pix Directed by Elisa Amesbury
A gripping satire on social aspiration, the play focuses on two women and their search for husbands. The wealthy Mrs Rich is making a concerted attempt to bag herself an aristocrat. “I will have a title, and a name, that’s resolved; a name that shall fill the mouth.” She is rapidly falling for the debonair Sir John Roverhead, a professional Beau who woos every rich woman he meets, but aims to wed the one who best combines youth with fortune. For witty Lady Landsworth, the problem is to discover whether the man she loves is as worthy as he looks: “He should be genteel, yet not a bean; witty yet no debauchee; susceptible of love, yet abhorring lewd women…mightily in love with me, and not so much as know I am worth the clothes I wear.” However from the nobles to the servants, noone is what they appear to be. Imposters are unmasked, confidences betrayed and a great deal of money changes hands as the story twists and turns towards its disastrous conclusion.
