Physics Teacher in Charge of Subject:

Mr A Bruno

Entry Requirements: Everyone will have achieved minimum GCSE B grades in Maths and either Separate Science Physics or both Science (Y10 course) and Additional Science (Year 11) Course Details: We follow the OCR Advancing Physics specification. The course, revised in 2008, focuses not only on theory but also on how physics is used today to enhance our lives. All students receive a textbook and a CD ROM containing course materials, learning resources and modelling applications. There is much emphasis on learning through practical work and mathematical modelling. The department is particularly well endowed with practical equipment. In each year, for each of the 9 chapters, internal assessment is via a formal test ( based on past paper exam questions), plus a home based assignment that is either a report of an investigation or a research based written task. AS Topics covered include Communications, Designer Materials, Waves and Quantum Behaviour, Space, Time and Motion. There are 2 coursework tasks to complete; researching and producing a presentation on a material of your choice and producing a quality of measurement practical based task. A2 Topics include Radioactivity, Modelling (radioactive decay, discharging a capacitor, simple harmonic motion), Forces (gravitational, electrical and magnetic), Matter (very cold and very hot) and Fundamental Particles. Coursework comprises a practical investigation (of your free choice) and a research briefing. Exams/Coursework: AS

Career Options: You will develop numerical, analytical, problem-solving and practical skills that are highly sought after by employers in many sectors, away from science and engineering. Physics can lead to a wide range of career options. The three major employers of career physicists are academic institutions, government laboratories, and private industry, with the largest employer being the last. Many people who are trained as physicists, however, use their skills in other parts of the economy, in particular in engineering, computing, and finance.
