ALSA 2013 Grand National Judges Barbara Harris

Barbara is a Colorado native and currently lives in the mountains outside of Cañon City with her husband. They purchased their first llamas in 1991, while living in the mountains outside of Fort Collins Colorado, with the primary goal of packing with them. In 1993 they expanded into breeding llamas and in 1994 Barbara began showing llamas. She became a member of ALSA in late 1991. In 1996, Barbara graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Psychology. Her emphasis was on animal behavior and learning and encompassed classes in animal nutrition, equine behavior, animal behavior, genetics and livestock behavior. She also had the pleasure of taking classes with the livestock behaviorist, Temple Grandin. In 1998, Barbara attended her first judging clinic and by the Fall of 1999 she had become certified as an ALSA judge. She has now become certified as an ALSA Llama halter judging instructor. For Barbara, her greatest joy in her journey with llamas has been the wonderful people she has meet over the years. She has found there is a strong closeness in the llama community. Simple acquaintances become life long friends. People reach out to help total strangers at shows. And then there are our “silent brothers” who started each of us on this wonderful journey.

Philip Feiner

Phil has always been an animal lover and remembers as a child bringing an injured duckling to his neighbor’s house for examination. With the help of his neighbor, Dr. Leighton, Chief of Surgery at New York’s Animal Medical Center, that little duckling survived and thrived. Having bred and raised a number of successful show horses, his focus switched to llamas in 1991 after experiencing their gentle nature and energy. In 1997 Phil introduced the Northeast Llama Showcase in West Springfield, Mass, where he served as its superintendent for six years. He also served as the superintendent for the ALSA Eastern Regional for 4 years, and as the superintendent of the Llama Futurity Association Fall Harvest show for a number of years. In addition to superintending shows, he served on the BOD of the Greater Appalachian Llama & Alpaca Association (GALA), serving as both the New York 5

representative and Treasurer for 6 years. Additionally, he spent six years as a director and Treasurer of the Llama Futurity Association. He has held positions on the ALSA Judges Committee and currently serves as a member and Secretary of the ILR-SD Judges Committee. Phil has enjoyed working as a judge for the past nine years. He has judged shows both large and small, from the local state fair to some of the most prestigious Futurities in the country. He has also judged both performance and halter at the ALSA Grand National. His “day” job entails working as a licensed Realtor servicing New York City and its surrounding boroughs. Currently, he and his partner are exploring adding additional livestock based operations to the farm in Stephentown, New York.

Patti Morgan

Patti Morgan from Kansas / Colorado has been raising llamas since 1995. She resides in Kansas in the winter and Colorado in the summer. She began judging halter, performance and youth in 2000 and has since expanded to judging fleece in 2008. She is currently a judge in llama halter/performance/youth and llama fleece. In addition to judging, she enjoys showing, packing, pr work and working with the fleeces. At present Patti is a PLTA certifier (Pack Llama Trial Assn), a member of the GPLA (Kansas llama association) BOD, and manages the RMLA (Rocky Mountain Llama and Alpaca Assn) Fiber Booth.

Cindy Ruckman

A homeschool mother of four, Cindy and her husband Mike live on McFarland’s Llama Farm with Cindy’s parents, Don & Sue McFarland, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Since 1995, their three generation farm has worked hard to make a positive impact within their family, their community and the lama industry. With a degree in Interior Design, Cindy is an avid fiber enthusiast. She is an ALSA Llama and Alpaca Fleece Judge, as well as an ALSA Llama Fleece Judge Instructor. As a Fiber Artist, Cindy highlights her work as a member of the KUDOS Artist Co-Op in Central Ohio. This is Cindy’s 18th year an advisor of Llamas-R-Us 4-H Club and she is the Superintendent of the Hartford Fair Llama Show. She is also a certified Camelidynamics Handler and Apprentice Practitiner. Outside of the Camelid Community, Cindy is a homeschool mom. She is active within her church, and is also a Board Member and Tournament Director for Christian Communicators of Ohio, which is a speech and debate league for home educated students.
