The Aftermath

2012

The Mayans were wrong. The televangelists were wrong. The Indian guru Kalki Bhagavan was wrong. The dreaded Timewave Zero theory was wrong. The feared flux of Oort cloud comets never did hit our solar system. The geomagnetic reversal triggered by a massive solar flare never materialized. The Earth never collided with “Nibiru. There was no alien invasion. In fact, all of cataclysmic events predicted by the doomsayers to happen on 21 December 2012 never materialized. They were all wrong! Yet, little did anyone know that the hellish nightmare that we are living in now was unleashed in a small math classroom within the walls of ASMS.

What happens when you divide by ZERO?

Hmmmm...

NOOOO!

Welcome to the Aftermath... it has begun... 05

From the Editors Guys, we didn’t think we were going to make it. But it appears as though we have. It has been a pleasure bringing you this yearbook, even though, as you have seen, we have had to chase you down with cameras, pull each other up, battle zombies, and get a little creative. But, really, what do you expect from those who survived two millennia, two centuries, and three decades all before they were 15? Yes, over the years we’ve seen a lot of nonsense go on, from Y2K to December 21, 2012, and, possibly the worst mistake of all, the school awarding diplomas to the likes of us. But before we go, we would like to leave you with some wisdom, a few laughs, fun memories, and maybe even some apocalypse survival tips. Congratulations on making it through another year, and enjoy! Azimuth

The 2012-2013 ASMS Azimuth Yearbook is dedicated to Dr. Garvin Wattuhewa. Dr. Watt, as he is affectionately known, has been a vital part of the ASMS community for 21 years. His retirement in December of this school year took many students by surprise, but it was the right time for him to move closer to his family. During his time at ASMS, Dr. Watt served primarily as the head of the Physics Department, and he always put his students first. Additionally, he was a member of various committees on campus, and the Board of Directors hired him as Interim President for the 2009-2010 school year. Dr. Watt is loyal to ASMS and dedicated to the school’s success. Even though he is missed by students and faculty, we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors, and we thank him for his commitment and service to ASMS.

Fall TerM What’s that?!? Western thought zombies. They’ve been mutated by radiation and excessive learning. Now they thirst for the taste of brains and ether.

Zombies? I wonder if Aristotle ever paused to consider their possibility. Where might they fall on the hierarchy of being? Are their souls still connected to their respective sta--

30

AAAH!!!!

Good thing we all know the campus so well from last year. Other wise these zombies would be a lot harder to avoid. Actually, I’m new...

Wait, you’re a sophomore?

No, incoming junior. You can stay, but if we need bait we’re using you. RUN!

Hey, are you okay? We need to get to class. You don’t have senioritis, do you?

Wake me up when we graduate.

31

MOVE in day

Oh, the traffic jams. The innocent, nervous faces. Those clingy parents who just won’t ever leave. Those all-too-important introductions between roommates. And those darn returnings, already complaining and acting like they know everything! Such is Move-In Day. But, that day, did anybody, incoming or otherwise, have a clue what they were getting into? Class Bonding During one of the first weekends of the year, each class took a day trip to a local attraction. The seniors visited the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center, the juniors visited Dauphin Island, and the sophomores visited the Exploreum.

Geekfest We made it through the first few months, and now it’s time to party. This Fall term Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores got together for the first Geekfest of the year. Games were played, pizzas were devoured, and energy drinks were drained long into the night and the morning. Monsters and cartoon characters roamed the halls, while Magic tournaments raged on in the gym. It was a night for everyone to take a break from their usual epic struggles.

German-American Day Holy Quark and Apfel Schorle! It’s time for the annual German-American Day celebration at ASMS, an annual treat sponsored by German club. The crowd of attendees enjoyed dancing lessons and a cafe, where they attempted to order authentic snacks in German. While the pronunciation may have been cringe-worthy, where there’s food there’s fun, and this was certainly no exception.

Azimuth

42

French Week Break out your berets and continental manners; it’s time for National French Week. This year, French club celebrated with a series of events, starting with crèpe baking lessons. Tuesday brought a French café where participants got to attempt to scratch out their snack orders in French. Then, the club showed “The Count of Monte Cristo” and served hot cocoa for their Wednesday event, and the week culminated in an presentation on French culture at assembly.

43

SPIRIT WEEK Spirit Week is characterized by the terror of bearded ladies and the pizazz of the well-dressed. Get up early to dress as your alter ego. Or just don’t change. “Quickly don a brassiere, man! To the front lines you go! Watch out for the lovely young lady with an Anatomy and Physiology textbook and a penciled-on mustache.”

45

Goofy Olympics The adrenaline of a neck-and-neck, tooth-and-nail, chest thumpingly vicious hall competition. It begins. Soon everyone color codes to prepare for battle. This is the final moment. That great Conflict...Goofy Olympics. The final battle is fought not with the sword but with tug-of-war and a cross dress relay. Only one hall will prevail‌

Senior Trip What’s the only place you get to meet princesses, stay in a sports themed hotel, and answer a role question every morning? Senior Trip of course! Mr. Dolbeare and a handful of chapherones enjoyed a three day trip to Disney World with the senior class. Memories were made, rides were ridden, and sleep was unheard of.

Winter Term I never go to the Winter Formal. Not once in 20 years. However... Sitting at my Spirituality Seat, I sense that there is a problem...

The students are dancing at the same frequency as the extremely loud music. This may cause an earthquake if the amplitude gets too high. Here, I think I have something in my desk...

Azimuth

52

You see, the waves of the music and the steps of the students are aligned, and the amplitudes of the t wo combine to make a considerable wave...

Yes? Please let me speak to the D.J.... He must turn that music down!

And thus the day was saved... at least, for one more night... 53

Sophomore Class Trip

Azimuth

54

Swamp tours, vertigo in the WWII museum, flying sugar in Cafe Du Monde, wedding crashing, singing in the Hard Rock Cafe, and creepy ghost tours were the highlights of Sophomore Trip. The class bonded over eating beignets, riding the river boat, watching a wedding in Jackson Square, and of course, the exhausting bus ride back.

55

Preview Day

Campus is at its shiniest clean of the year. Students are strutting about in their finest apparel. Teachers are out with bright smiles and their coolest demos. What could be possibly be going on this Saturday morning? Preview Day. All sorts of potential incoming students appear at the school to ask questions and be dazzled by the school’s geekiness. A little crazy as it may be for our ambassadors and other volunteers, it’s a fun day to show our best side and draw in our next class.

Geekfest In the midst of the fog, the cold, the melancholy, and the overall post-Christmas apathy, we nerds needed a break. Or, more specifically, an all-night Geek-out. With movies, board games, card matches, Guitar Hero, computer games, anime, Dance Party, and, of course, the allimportant junk food, everybody had a chance to get the excess geek out of their system and loosen up before finishing off Winter Term.

Chess Team

One athletic team truly defines the ASMS spirit. Their raw athleticism and physical prowess insured that they would be the defenders of ASMS in its time of need. The Chess team. Fearlessly led by Eric Peterson and Alexander Peeples, the Chess team stood as ASMS’s last hope to defend the campus from destruction and loss. What other choice did they have but to triumph? For the first time in nearly a decade the Chess Team won the Mobile County-Baldwin County Championship.

68

Science Bowl The madness! The preperation! Poor Physics Department! Science Bowl has arrived. The volunteers struggle to drown out the sound of the buzzers, as the competitors rack their brains for the right answers, and the students pray that it is over soon.

Special Projects Geez, I’ve been here for hours...

When is she ever going to open the door?

Guys, the world has ended. Why do you even care what special project you get?

Spring Term Man, how am I going to get into the caf? Normally, I hate eating in here, but it’s all I’ve got left, these days. All of our other resources have run short...

And we still haven’t figured out how to wash our clothes, since the explosion knocked out our power and running water...

Azimuth

84

What are we going to do? Things are getting pretty crazy around here...

But I just want something to eat. I’m so hungry! I bet there’s so much in there, my whole hall would be set for days. If I could just get in...

What! How did you guys get in there?

Didn’t you know the other door was unlocked?

Junior Class Trip

There was only one hope for the juniors of ASMS. In order to escape the ravages of a leering Spring Term schedule they had to escape. The voyage was a weekend for the ages. Mall visits and bus trips were smattered in, but the dominating responsibility of the junior class loomed large. Six Flags. The juniors did ASMS proud. Conquering everything from Acrophobia to Goliath, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Returning to their duties with a heavy heart the juniors stopped by the University of Alabama on their way back to prepare for the college admissions process.
