VIKING CORN, SOYBEANS, AND ALFALFA 2021 “Our Business is Growing Your Business.” Now we’re even closer to having a complete toolbox for you: New Value-Priced Corn Performance In addition to our regular lineup of highperformance conventional Viking Corn hybrids, we are launching Viking Workhorse Hybrids (pages 4–5) that are aimed at your less-productive acres. They bring proven performance without the extra expense of big-ticket genetics. Farmers have ingenuity. No matter how tough things get, our farm customers figure out a way to make things work. Every year. Things break down, and a farmer finds the right tool to fix them. While we know that yield is job number one of our seed line-up, we spend a lot of time working with genetic originators and combing through data from our test plots to find the right tool for the job—in other words, the right seed for each of your fields.

2

Insecticide-Free Option If you don’t need it, why pay for it? Our Insecticide-Free hybrid seed option (page 15) is another cost-savings for those fields where you don’t need insecticide on your seed corn. Thank you for everything you do, and thank you for your business. We believe in farmers; we believe in the importance and future of U.S. Agriculture; and we are committed to bringing you seed and agronomic advice that allows you to farm the way you want to.

New Aphid-Tolerant Soybean We are also launching a high-yielding aphidtolerant soybean (Viking 2244AT, page 22). Even during a bad aphid year, you won’t have to spray this variety, and that saves you money.

CORN ROOTWORM MANAGEMENT IN NON-GMO CORN The 2020 season has come and gone with some new, and some old challenges. One of the old challenges that reared its ugly head, is corn rootworms. 2020 was an ideal year for corn rootworm pressure. Strong rootworm feeding combined with high winds lead to some heavily damaged fields. Here is some information to take into consideration for 2021.

Severe damage from rootworm feeding.

VIKING CORN: All Viking brand corn is conventional, nonGMO. It does not have any built-in protection from corn rootworm via Bt traits. Most Viking corn is treated with Cruiser 250 insecticide, which provides protection to the seed against feeding from early-season insects such as wireworms, seed corn maggots, cutworms and grubs. It does NOT provide any protection from plant feeding insects such as rootworms.

Westerm Corn Rootworm

Rye. The single-year economics may not look favorable, but if you look at longterm farm income, small grains combined with a legume cover crop can actually outperform corn-soybean rotations. (https://practicalfarmers.org/2018/08/ cropping-system-diversity-effects-onproduction-soil-health-and-profitabilitymatt-liebman/) 2. Granular Insecticide – Usually applied during planting via planter modifications such as smart boxes. Options include pyrethroids and organo-phosphate/ pyrethroid mix; approximate cost $20-$30 per acre.

CORN ROOTWORM BIOLOGY: There are two species of corn rootworm that can cause severe damage to corn both as larvae and adults, they are the Western Corn Rootworm and the Northern Corn Rootworm. Both species have only one generation per year. Eggs are laid in the soil from mid-August to mid-September, and overwinter in the soil. The eggs then hatch in late May to early June. The larvae feed on corn roots before pupating in the soil and emerging in late June to early July. The adult rootworm beetles, feed on corn silks, pollen, and leaves. Both of these species of rootworm have mutated so that they can feed on commonly used Bt traits such as YieldGuard RW, Agrisure RW, and Herculex CRW.

CORN ROOTWORM MANAGEMENT OPTIONS: 1. Crop Rotation may seem like a quaint idea for many farmers who don’t have livestock, but it remains the most effective and cheapest way to control corn rootworm (and many other pests such as Goss’s Wilt in corn and cyst nematode, SDS & white mold in soybeans). Unfortunately, corn-soybeans-corn is not enough of a rotation to interrupt the life cycle of most CRW. Check your local markets and consider forages, canning crops, and small grains (especially if you have a market for straw locally) including Hybrid Winter

3. Liquid Insecticide – Usually applied during planting, some options can be mixed with liquid starter fertilizer. Liquid pyrethroids are the most common option; approximate cost is $10-$20 per acre. 4. Adult Rootworm Beetle Control – control of adult rootworm beetle control is sometimes necessary to prevent future infestations. Please consult your local chemical dealer for best recommendations. (We are NOT chemical experts. Always read and follow label instructions. Please consult your local chemical dealer for more information and recommendations regarding options and costs of insecticides.)

Not all of your ground can grow 250 bushels of corn, so why pay for 250 bushels of genetics? Most farms have some ground that is just not as productive. It seems like no matter what you do, the corn won’t yield more than 150-180 bushels on that ground. Viking Workhorse Hybrids is the right seed for that ground.

at a LOWER COST! $118/80,000 Seed Unit* 88-84W

84-day CRM

• Taller hybrid with great overall stress tolerance • Strong adaptation in northern zones & moving west • Excellent overall plant health • Strong emergence & early vigor, good choice for cornon-corn acres

88-94W

94-day CRM

• Solid plant health & agronomics • Excellent stress tolerance, even on lighter soils with lower CEC • Good plant health & disease tolerance • Strong emergence & early growth lead to fast canopy closure

Why are Viking Workhorse Hybrids cheaper? These hybrids are cheaper for four reasons: 1. They are produced using modified female parents which produce more seed per acre, lowering our seed cost. 2. These hybrids carry lower royalties than the royalties we are obligated to pay on the newest, highest-yielding hybrids. 3. They are flat-priced. No Early-Pay discounts or JDF financing. 4. Fungicide treatment only. No Cruiser insecticide.

Is this “old” seed or “close-out” hybrids? No. These are hybrids we have selected and produced specifically for this purpose.

These hybrids are: • Adapted to your less-productive ground (180 bu/A yield ceiling) • Widely adapted • Drought-tolerant • Flex-eared • Dual-purpose • Conventional hybrids with no traits, no guarantee on GMO purity

*No Early Pay Discounts available for Viking Workhorse Hybrid Corn. *Volume Discounts are available.

INSECTICIDE-FREE VIKING SEED CORN Most seed companies treat all of their seed corn with insecticide.

We offer you freedom to choose. Several university studies demonstrate insecticide-treated seed protects grain yield only in limited circumstances. If you don’t need insecticide-coated (Cruiser, Poncho, etc.) seed corn, don’t pay for it!

Farmer’s Choice – Save $10 per Bag! Save $10 per bag when you order insecticide-free seed corn! Your conventional corn will still be treated with a package of fungicides to protect it from seedling diseases and 2 biologicals (SabrEx & Excellorate) to enhance its health and yield. Please specify “insecticide-free” when ordering by Jan. 15.

Limited availability. Available only on these hybrids: 42-92, 51-95, 99-00, 51-04, 48-08

DUAL-PURPOSE CORN HYBRIDS We test our hybrids, in the field and in the lab, for silage quantity and quality against leading silage hybrid genetics at similar maturities. Only those hybrids that show consistently excellent tonnage and quality get the GS designation.

Why choose Viking GS? Because grain has energy. Our GS hybrids are very high-yielding grain hybrids, so you are going to get a lot of grain in your silage, which equates to higher energy. GS hybrids have an optimal grain-to-stover ratio and have excellent standability compared to low-lignin specialty silage hybrids.

Alfalfa Seed Treatment All of our alfalfa seed is coated with one of these OMRI-listed inoculants:

APEXTM GREEN HYDROLOC Encapsulates each seed in a mix of micro-nutrients, including iron, zinc, & manganese; bacteria; and a hydrating polymer for improved water uptake and seedling growth. Contains rhizobia strains to promote nodulation. Hydrating polymer holds water around seed, improving germination and seedling survival, especially under adverse conditions.

PRE-VAILTM Clay-based pre-inoculant improves early seedling vigor through increased root development and excellent nodulation for higher yields. Contains high levels of rhizobia for nitrogen fixation – 100 million viable cells per gram – and Azospirillum bacteria to promote plant growth.

* Variety not stated

Winter Survival Index (WSI)

Disease & Pest Resistance

A standardized test that measures the ability of alfalfa varieties to withstand severe winters. Varieties are rated from 1 (superior) to 4 (adequate). If a variety does not have a WSI rating, you can use the Fall Dormancy as a guide. The most persistent alfalfas are those with low WSI’s and good pest and disease resistance.

Poorly drained fields require alfalfas with better disease resistance (especially Phytophthora and Aphanomyces). Select varieties with superior disease resistance to ensure a long, productive stand.

Resistance

The measure of how tall an alfalfa plant grows after the last cutting and before going dormant for the season. An alfalfa with a lower number goes dormant earlier in the fall.

HR = Highly Resistant R = Resistant MR = Moderately Resistant LR = Low Resistance S = Susceptible

Disease Resistance Index (DRI)

Forage Quality

30 = highest, 6 = lowest

Varieties with a high Relative Feed Quality (RFQ) are designated with either HQ or HD (WL 349HQ & Viking 372HD).

FUNCTIONAL FARMING: THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB

Alfalfa: Best Planting Practices • • • • •

Seed alfalfa into a firm seed bed ¼-inch to ½-inch deep Spring seeding: April 15 to May 15 (southern Minnesota) Fall seeding: August 1 to 15 (southern Minnesota) Adjust these dates accordingly further north and south Plant 15-20 lbs/acre for alfalfa alone; 15 lbs/acre mixed with grasses • Optimum pH: 6.7 - 6.9 (soil test and lime accordingly 12 months prior to seeding) • Maintain phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) at optimal levels

Alfalfa Variety Selection When selecting an alfalfa variety, the key considerations are: how long will the field be in production, how many cuttings a year do you plan to take, what is the end use for the forage (quality needs), and what are the unique challenges for the field location (disease / insects)?

ALFALFA VARIETY KEY CHARACTERISTICS HD: Highly Digestible — Alfalfa lines with the HD distinction are tested for quality from the very first selection by the breeders. These lines have low lignin levels resulting in milk/ton numbers that are first in class. HQ: High Quality — Highest quality alfalfa lines from WL, one of the largest alfalfa breeding programs in the world. AP: Aphanomyces Race 2 Resistance — Farmers in northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin face challenges with Aphanomyces root rot in alfalfa. If you are in one of these regions choose a variety with race 2 Aphanomyces resistance. These varieties also have resistance to race 1. LH: Leaf Hopper Resistance — These varieties maintain strong yields and forage quality under heavy pressure from leafhoppers.
