WELCOME TO THE 2025 GARDENING SEASON.
GREEN MEANS GROW!
As I watched footage of a once-in-a-generation snowfall in the Gulf Coast in January, I felt a twinge of sadness. Minnesota has just had a second winter with sparse snow. The damage a brown winter does to perennial plants, lawns and foundations seems a high price to pay for easy travel. In the face of these rapidly changing weather patterns, planting a garden is a wildly hopeful and powerful act. In the same way that humans want to persevere, seeds want to grow. Give a seed some light, nourishment, and water—and it will give its very life to make a flower, a fruit or another seed.
The seeds you’ll find in this catalog are what I like to call salt-of-the-earth seeds. There are a few hybrids chosen for specific uses, but most of our seeds are selected to go the distance in your garden, like they have for countless years in countless patches of earth. You’ll find some abbreviations after each seed choice. Here’s what they mean:
• (OP): Open pollinated means if you save the seed from the plant, you’ll get a plant with the same characteristics the following year.
• (HL): Heirloom seeds have been grown more than fifty years. All heirloom seeds are open pollinated, but not all open pollinated seeds have been around long enough to make the cut as heirloom.
• (HYB): Hybrid seeds have been created by cross pollination to achieve a specific end, like increased disease resistance or higher yields.
One thing you won’t find in this catalog is genetically modified (GMO) seed, which have genes from a different species spliced into their DNA (think fish genes in tomatoes to improve frost resistance). While we offer hybrid seeds, GMO seeds are not available.
Thank you for taking the time to check out our 2025 garden seed lineup and for being the kind of person who wants to take part in the sacred act—carried forward for thousands of years—of gardening.

TIPS FOR GROWING POPCORN
SOIL REQUIREMENTS
Medium to coarse soils warm slightly faster than fine soils and should improve germination, emergence and seedling establishment. High clay content and/or poorly drained soils will weaken the root, reduce yield and increase lodging.
FERTILITY
A soil test will show the nutrient needs. Popcorn needs nitrogen in abundance.
PLANTING
A soil temperature of 50-55° F is necessary for best germination.
SEEDING
With irrigation, seed 20,000 to 27,000 plants per acre (4-6 lb/acre). Plant fewer for dry land. Sow the seeds 1-2” deep, spaced 6-8” apart. When 5” tall, thin to 12” apart. A series of short rows, 24-36” apart, ensure good pollination.
IRRIGATION
Popcorn needs 1.5 to 2” of water per week from either rain or irrigation.
INSECT CONTROL
Most, if not all, of the insects that attack field corn can also attack popcorn.
HARVESTING
Harvest when the husks are completely dry and the kernels are hard. Hang the ears in mesh bags in a well-ventilated area. After removing the kernels from the ears, store in an airtight container at room temperature.
CAUTION
Growing popcorn and sweet corn in the same garden will produce disappointing results for both crops due to cross pollination.

SWEET CORN PLANTING TIP
The biggest enemy your sweet corn seed faces in the spring is cool, wet soil. Planting in soil that’s below 65º F will slow germination, giving more time for fungal diseases and insects to claim their share of your seed. You’ll get much better results in 65-75º F soil, especially with untreated and organic sweet corn seed. Test your soil temperature about an inch down, be patient, and watch your corn spring to life.
Looking for organic sweet corn? See page 28.
CAN I PLANT DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF SWEET CORN TOGETHER?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250130184810-1f70769b54c8b85d3feeb31540dbf374/v1/ae365be3c91be48ae843ec3740b83c38.jpeg)
Did you know that not all sweet corn varieties should be planted together? Let’s look at the two groups sweet corn falls into and how that may impact your planting plans for the coming season.
WHAT ARE THE TWO GROUPS OF SWEET CORN?
The two groups of sweet corn are Su1 (SE, SYN, Quadsweet and SU) and Sh2. These two groups must be isolated from each other (and other types of corn) or there is a big drop in quality. Below is a fantastic chart, courtesy of Crookham Seed (the people we get most of our sweet corn from), that shows this division.
SU1 GROUP
SH2 GROUP
Standard Sugary (SU) Augmented
Sugary Enhanced (SE)
Sweet BreedsTM
Gourmet SweetTM
Multisweet
Synergistic (SYN) Shrunken
Table Sweet® Summer Sweet®
Triple SweetTM
Supersweet
QuadsweetsTM Xtra Tender
DO I NEED TO ISOLATE MY SWEET CORN BY GROUP?
Sh2 varieties need to be isolated from SU1 varieties. In some cases, varieties in the Su1 group also need to be isolated from other Su1 varieties due to differences in genetics. Our NK-199 variety, for example, needs to be isolated from other Su1 varieties. All of the other Su1 varieties we carry can be planted together.
IS THERE A CATCH?
There is a catch to this. If you want the highest possible quality sweet corn, you should isolate ALL different varieties of sweet corn from each other. Planting an SE and a SYN together is fine, and the quality will still be good, but it can change your expected outcome a little.
DO I NEED TO ISOLATE BY COLOR?
Also, color isolation needs to be considered. If you were to plant Bodacious (an all-yellow SE) with Illusion (an all-white SYN) the eating quality would be great, BUT your Illusion crop will end up bicolor or mostly/all yellow. Similarly, an all yellow can influence the color of bi-color varieties too. Yellow is a dominate trait.
OK, SO HOW DO I ISOLATE MY SWEET CORN?
You can isolate by distance or by time. If you’re growing sweet corn, isolate it by 250 feet. Easier yet is to isolate by time. This means that you are spacing out your planting times by 14 days to help ensure that the different corn plants are hitting maturity at different times. This dramatically reduces the chances of pollen from the wrong parent being present in the environment.
If you have any questions or want some advice on selecting the right sweet corn seed, please contact the garden center at 800.352.5247 or garden@alseed.com.

See page 11 for other planting considerations.
