PresidentMacSincerely,EhrhardtofAlbert Lea Seed
WHAT IS HAPPENING?
• Work with organic farmers to identify challenges and develop seed-based solutions when they can help
Albert Lea Seed (which owns the Viking brand) has purchased Blue River Organic Seed. Over the next two years, we will be integrating the Viking & Blue River brands into one combined national organic seed brand.
• Support the organic farming community and foster the growth of a vibrant organic agriculture in the United States
Our first goal is to minimize disruptions to you. Please order seed just like you always have. If you worked with a dealer from either company, continue to do so. If you ordered directly from Albert Lea Seed, call us or visit alseed.com.
2 2023 VIKING/BLUE RIVER ORGANIC SEED GUIDE
• Provide the best organic-specific seed genetics for corn, soybeans, alfalfa and other crops—including favored access to the largest corn breeding program focused on developing hybrids specifically for organic farmers
STRONGER TOGETHER Mac Ehrhardt Albert Lea Seed President Maury Johnson Blue River’s Founder/Original Manager
A s you’ve probably figured out from the cover, Viking Organic Seed and Blue River Organic Seed are being combined. We are excited about this for many reasons, but the most important one is that it will be a win for you and all of our organic farm customers.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?
• Deliver dedicated agronomic and customer support from a family-owned company committed to organic agriculture
As we complete the integration of our businesses and prepare for the 2023 planting season, rest assured that you will not be required to switch products. We are committed to delivering the high level of service to which you are accustomed—and we will keep you posted on our plans for how this integration will advance your organic farming goals and benefit the communities and customers you serve. Thank you for your business, your trust, and your continued support. We will be working hard every day to earn it.
• Provide quality seed with transparent non-GMO standards
The integration of the two companies will occur over two years. The first year will be a transition year. This approach will allow us to get input from our customers, dealers and employees on what they like and don’t like about the two brands as well as their ideas for the future. We will use this information to develop and implement a long-term integration that best meets all of our needs. We will continue to operate out of both Albert Lea, Minnesota and Ames, Iowa for the foreseeable future. And Blue River Organic Seed’s founder and original manager, Maury Johnson, will join Albert Lea Seed’s board of directors.
It is a natural fit. Albert Lea Seed is one of the oldest and largest suppliers of organic field seed in the U.S., and Blue River Organic Seed is the longest-established organic seed corn company in the U.S. We have worked with (and competed against) each other from Blue River’s beginning and we share a lot of mutual respect. We believe our combined brand will be uniquely positioned to:

If PuraMaize pollen is present during the pollination window, all non-PuraMaize pollen is rejected, including GMO, Gene Edited and CRISPR pollen. Why is this important? The PuraMaize line strengthens the ability of organic growers to continue to farm organically without worrying about pollen drift from their conventional neighbors’ corn fields. An added benefit is that organic growers will no longer delay planting, widening their window for corn grain production.

What is PuraMaize? PuraMaize is a hybrid corn just like all Blue River corn varieties. However, it has one very important advantage: the PuraMaize gene blocking system. Developed through traditional selective breeding, the PuraMaize gene-blocking system obstructs GMO corn cross contamination.pollinationSimply put, PuraMaize prefers its own pollen over the pollen of neighboring corn hybrids that do not contain PuraMaize.

NITRAGIN® GOLD
PRE-VAILTM
A premium-quality alfalfa and grass mixture that supports the high energy & nutritional demands of dairy cows and beef cattle on feed. Excellent yield and persistence, fast regrowth after cutting.
Planting Date: April - May, August 1 - 25 Seeding: 18-20 lbs/acre. Drill or broadcast and roll. Plant ¼ in. to ½ in. deep.
Adaptation: Well adapted to most soil types.
Adaptation: All soils. Most productive in early spring and fall. Management: This mix should be grazed or cut prior to the grass heading out. Perennial ryegrass and Festulolium make this slower to dry for hay than our organic hay mix.
Planting Date: April - May, August 1 - 25 Seeding: 25-30 lbs/acre straight or 5-25 lbs/acre with a legume or legume mix. Drill or broadcast and roll. Plant ¼ in. to ½ in. deep.
Mixture of improved cool-season grasses well suited as an alfalfa companion. Adds highly digestible fiber to hay, maximizes yield potential, and reduces insect pressure.
Best Use: Best suited as a high-quality alfalfa companion.
Best Use: Best suited for high quality haylage, dry hay and baleage production.
ORGANIC PASTURE MIX
Adaptation: Well adapted to all types of soils. Management: Cut hay based on grass maturity, not alfalfa for maximum feed value. Especially important for first cutting in spring as grass will mature ahead of alfalfa.
Planting Date: April - May, August 1 - 25 Seeding: 25-30 lbs/acre straight or 5-10 lbs/acre with alfalfa or legume mix. Drill or broadcast and roll. Plant ¼ in. to ½ in. deep. to

BMR-TYPE SORGHUM-SUDANGRASS
Brown Mid-Rib (BMR)-type warm season annual grass forages contain a BMR gene (from conventional breeding techniques) that limits production of an enzyme needed for lignin formation as plants grow. BMR 6 and BMR 12 genes disrupt different enzymes in the lignin-forming process. With either gene, less lignin forms, resulting in higher digestibility of the forage and greater animal intake. The visually-evident brown midrib is a useful indicator of the trait.
Planting Date: Late May to early July (soil temps 62°F+). Seeding: 20-40 lbs/acre drilled ¾” to 1 ½” deep or 25-45 lbs/acre broadcast. Use high end of range for finer stems and faster drydown.

ORGANIC SYSTEMS: POSITIVE FOR RURAL LANDSCAPES, RURAL COMMUNITIES AND FARMER LIVELIHOODS FOR THE PLANET, FOR PEOPLE, GOOD FOR BUSINESS.
A systems-based approach Organic agriculture is a systems-based approach that honors and utilizes the complex relationships between nature, the land, and the people who farm it. Organic farmers work with natural systems and have an acute understanding that decisions made today influence the future of their operations for years to come. All management decisions are interconnected and have powerful ripple effects outward. Farmers who have committed to organic agriculture are continually learning and re-evaluating. Anyone who has lived and worked in organic agriculture can tell you it is a strong community of information sharers, deep thinkers and idealists; but it is also a group of folks who are incredibly pragmatic and love a challenge. Our commitment We firmly believe in the positive power of organic systems to transform rural landscapes, build livable farm economies, grow and steward our natural ecology and provide a resilient legacy for future generations. We view our role in this community as providing seed and solutions for the entire organic rotation. We know that organic farmers don’t just plant corn and soybeans but need high performing small grains, forages, and cover crops to meet and exceed the USDA regulatory standards. This isn’t just lip service; Viking & Blue River have been providing organic seed and solutions to certified organic farmers since before the inception of the federal standards in 2002, and we will continue to do so.
