GUEST ARTISTS LARISA AUKON
“I truly believe there is an inner “pulse” that runs through everything, mostly unseen but more often felt. I can think of no greater artistic inspiration than identifying this current and holding it in my heart long enough to translate it to canvas. I search for that perfect moment where everything falls into place inspirationally and technically. From that point on, I paint voraciously as if time is running out on me. ” From a very young age, Larisa received intensive art training in her native Latvia. She was accepted to the prestigious Janis Rosenthal’s Secondary Art School in Riga. Today, Larisa calls Arizona her home where she spends her time painting and teaching. She was featured in the Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector Magazine, Cowboys and Indians Magazine, Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine and in a recently published book Contemporary Art of The Southwest.
JAMES BASON
“My painting is an attempt to go beyond words to connect with, resonate with, and communicate with others at a level of remembrance of which we have all come from. In my work, I strive to move the viewer and engage them in a quiet conversation not solely based on what my painting depicts or its locale, but by what feeling or mood this image is evoking in them. By utilizing color, line, texture and tone I am striving to move beyond a place in time.” Bason is a native Montanan best known for his serene and contemplative landscape paintings of central Montana. He holds a BA in Graphic Design with honors from Montana State University at Bozeman. His artwork has been exhibited at the Western Masters Art Show, C.M. Russell Art Auction and Miniature Show, the Jay Contway and Friends Art Show, Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art, The Holter Museum of Art and the Yellowstone Art Museum as well as various art shows and auctions throughout the state of Montana. He resides in Great Falls with his wife and son.
DAVE HALL
“I am moved by the half-light of dawn and dusk, and most of my paintings are inspired by the Yellowstone country of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. A piece of my heart resides there, due in large part to the poetry associated with the convergence of family and friends, moving water and mayfly hatches.” A graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Dave Hall resides in Salt Lake City and on Blaine Spring Creek near Ennis, Montana.
JIVAN LEE
“In my paintings I explore using a whole lot of paint while portraying what are oftentimes fairly traditional subjects. I’m interested in how surface can become a sculptural part of representational paintings, and what happens when it does. The resulting pieces move between abstract fields of color, topographical planes, and recognizable imagery. “ Jivan Lee is an oil painter based in Santa Fe & Taos, NM. He grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting at Bard College with Joseph Santore and Laura Battle. His textural paintings explore the nature of paint as raw material, creator of image, and catalyst for emotional response. They have been exhibited nationally at museums and educational institutions and covered in publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, Art Business News, and Southwest Art.
ERIC MERRELL
Working extensively on location, Merrell has painted throughout the Sierra Nevada and San Gabriel Mountain ranges, the Mojave and Colorado deserts, along the Pacific Coast, as well as east coast locales like Cape Cod and Maine. Merrell has appeared in publications such as American Art Collector, American Artist, the California Art Club Newsletter, Plein Air Painting and Southwest Art. His work has been exhibited at venues across the United States, including the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, VT; California State University of Los Angeles, CA; the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Orleans, MA; the Long Beach Museum of Art in Long Beach, CA; the Oceanside Museum of Art, Oceanside, CA; the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena, CA; the Salton Sea History Museum, North Shore, CA; and the Frederick R. Weisman Museum at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA.
Z.Z. WEI
Z. Z. Wei was born in 1957 in Beijing, China. He started painting during the years of Culture Revolution. Art was his sanctuary from all the turmoil in his childhood and soon became his lifelong pursuit. He graduated from The Central Institute of Arts and Design (now The Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University) in 1984. By the age of 30, he had two exhibitions at China National Museum of Fine Arts. Upon his first arrival to the Northwest, Z.Z. Wei could not believe the beauty spread before him. His first experiences in the Pacific Northwest were visual revelations. He embarked on an artistic odyssey in a quest to paint powerful images of rural America. He found the strong and unique landscapes in this region, and the spirit which moved through them, mirrored his inner passions and the art ideas he sought. This explosion of awareness coupled with hi s own memories of home have created a visual text in his work that is an intoxicating sensation of the past and present.
