HOWARD POST

SPOTLIGHT: WAITING FOR SHIPPING TIME

I enjoy finding the abstract qualities in landscapes, not only the natural aspects but also the man-made things like fences. It’s a passion I’ve had throughout my career. I will always keep coming back to abstract compositions. I’ve found that even the most mundane subjects can have visual interest and excitement if you approach them from a different perspective. Early on in my career, I stumbled upon a bird’s eye view of corrals. I got really excited about the discovery that not only are they constructed boundaries, but they are also abstract shapes and patterns. Ever since, I’ve searched for different views of seemingly ordinary scenes. Some would say my compositions are simplified. I see them as “reduced to the essence.” I tend to edit out extraneous elements. My paintings are what’s essential to convey feeling.

When I’m out in nature, I don’t have a preconceived notion; I have my camera and shoot imagery that appeals to me at the time. I’m not saying, “Oh wow, I’m going to make a great painting out of this.” If a certain scene or object strikes me as visually interesting, I take a picture, and then I edit through all my digital files and find the imagery that’s still exciting to me. I like the term found object as used by Picasso and some of those guys. They’d find a piece of junk and turn it into a cow head. I’m not trying to do that specifically, but there are elements in my compositions that are discovered or found—perspectives, abstractions. I’m always trying to improve the surface quality of my paintings; to make the texture more interesting (I don’t know if that’s an experiment or more like an ongoing process). In terms of subject matter, I respond to imagery. I try to keep the compositions fresh for me and everybody else.
