SEPTEMBER VHAY

“Heartbeats: Great and Small,” will be on exhibit June 2 through June 14, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, June 12, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Vhay chose the title for her show based on the range of animals featured in the work, from a barn swallow that weighs .7 ounces to a bison that weighs 1,100 pounds. Vhay says both animals present challenges to the artist when rendering scale. And each animal possesses unique anatomical and biological intricacies and exist in a delicate balance with their ecosystems. Using charcoal and oil, Vhay presents domestic and wild animals, as well as a few Red Horse pieces. The Red Horses are minimalist gesture paintings where the essence and shape of a horse is rendered in elegant lines. Two of the show’s paintings spotlight herds of mule deer from Vhay’s parent’s Nevada ranch. “Not only is the subject matter close to my heart,” Vhay said of the deer paintings. “But also the palette for these pieces reflects the subdued colors of the desert, which has been a lifelong artistic inspiration to me.” Based on an enthusiastic reception in December, Vhay will show another Red Bear painting. The large (48” x 60”) bear is a departure from the Red Horse series, which is indeed a departure from the artist’s more representational work, showing her great span of interest and expertise. September Vhay was born in 1968 in Reno, Nevada. A largely self-taught artist, her formal training is in architecture. Vhay’s initial painting education, via architecture school, was in watercolor and she now paints in both watercolor and oil. Her recent exhibitions include the 2013 Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale and the 2013 “Cowgirl Up” at Desert Caballeros Museum. Among other awards, September won first place in painting at the 2012 Ex Arte Equinus International Competition, and the Trustee’s Purchase Award at the 2010 Western Visions Show & Sale at the National Museum of Wildlife Art.
