TRAVIS WALKER EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE February 12th - February 22nd Reception September 27 5:00-7:00 PM
TRAVIS WALKER EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE 12 February – 22 February 2014, Jackson Reception February 19, 5-7 PM Altamira Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Travis Walker. “Everything In Its Right Place” will be composed of new paintings created between September 2013 and February 2014. Working almost exclusively in oil, Walker continues his exploration of surreal landscape scenes based in the Jackson area. Familiar motifs such as whitewater river trip buses, Snow King Mountain, paragliders, and hay bales will make appearances. The exhibit will include 10 small works featuring vintage campers. Walker’s expertise with printmaking shows up in his paintings as well. In a new work entitled “Snow King and Whitewater Bus (Orange)” (oil on panel, 24 x 48, 2014), graphic elements define the painting. Interlocking lines of the dark and light green of a mowed lawn draw the eye toward a wall of similarly green shaded trees. A street and sidewalk follow the same line, creating a hyperreal flatness. The titular bus provides the only detailed element in the painting, but even it is refined to a configuration of shapes. Often void of humans or animals, a Walker painting distills shapes and landmarks to their essences. Walker masterfully generates tension between his soft, pastel palettes and a pervasive lonely mood. His paintings hum with energy, at once soothing and evocative. Shapes themselves take center stage as subjects and cause viewers to see the town of Jackson in a new way.

“A common subject in my work is the road, which represents our journey through life. We start off staring down the lines of a road, and our entire lives we continue to follow the road to new places. My fascination with roads led me to another symbol in my work: the trailer home. I have found so many trailers scattered throughout the West that I have come to view them as representations of the American Dream, full of hope, uncertainty, and memory. The Empty Home Oil on Panel 30 x 48 inches (TRW 038)
