WATERCOLOR SUCCULENTS

To help visualize the piece before painting, sketch first with a light pencil. When adding color, start with the lightest areas, then build the intensity with darker shades.

THE MIGHTY RHINO

Start first with the outline, then begin to add your shading with small cross-hatched lines. Once the rough shading has been blocked in, you can continue to add more depth with lines placed closer together.

A WORLD OF WISDOM

Once your initial sketch is complete, add color to the largest areas (such as the wall and table) first. Keep the consistency of your gouache constant so that these areas are fully opaque. Next, you can start to add shading, highlights, and the black outlines. Rememberwith gouache, you can add light colors on top of darker ones!

JOURNEY OF FREEDOM

Choose the right tool for the job! Use a larger brush to paint in the background, and a smaller one for the fine details. Here, small strokes were used to create the look of grass in the background and slightly larger strokes were used for the grass in the foreground.

SHADOWS AND LIGHT

The Fine Liner Pen Set includes three fine liners and one brush pen. The brush pen was used here to create varied thicknesses with each stroke. Apply slightly more pressure for the wider end, and allow it to taper off as you use less pressure.

Create lots of texture on each petal by adding color in small, flicking motions. This will naturally give the appearance of the folds and veins that appear naturally on most flowers. When filling in the background, use the Jet Black marker to allow the florals to pop!

FLUTTERING HARMONY

For a truly vibrant piece of artwork, try using complementary colors! Green and red are opposite one another on the color wheel, which is why the flowers and the butterfly stand out so distinctly from one another.

FOLIAGE SERENADE

Our Artist Markers are alcohol-based, and the Dual Tip Pens are water-based. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use them on the same piece! Here, the Dual Tip Pens were used for the leaves, and an Artist Marker was used for the background. Such a perfect match!

ENCHANTING CANOPY

Try applying color in different ways for different effects! Here, the Artist Markers were stippled to create texture in the mossy areas, applied horizontally for the water, and neatly blended on the flowers.

Taking your time is the key when using colored pencils. The best and most realistic results are achieved by applying colors lightly. Layer different shades together and allow them to blend seamlessly from one color to the next.

Try the spotlight technique! Draw a circle (or other shape) over a portion of your sketch. Fill in this area with bright and bold colors to draw attention right where you want it. The rest of the piece can be shaded with Monochrome Shading Pencils.
