WELCOME About Alternatives Alternatives explores world spirituality and personal growth through regular events and online resources. Based at St James’s Church, Piccadilly since 1982, Alternatives is an independent not-for-profit organisation serving a global audience. With the recent passing of Nelson Mandela I keep asking myself, “What am I doing here and am I using my voice and presence as a force for good and positive change?” Whilst I love my work, I don't want to be part of a legacy that merely creates ‘Spirit Junkies’ moving from one event to another, never reflecting on what these events mean and how we can integrate the learning into our day to day lives. So with that in mind we have launched two new exciting spaces, Alternatives Life Lounge, fortnightly events, offering alternative ideas to living, loving, working and being and The Conscious Business Club, a space where people, purpose and profits align. These spaces will provide a chance to reflect, connect, up skill, and put all this learning into practice, raising our awareness and improving our everyday lives. So I welcome 2014 and the opportunity to move from knowing, to doing, to being! Mary Daniels Co-director

A Friendly Disclaimer We take great care in selecting our presenters and equally we ask you to use your discernment regarding opinions and information presented. We recognise that quick solutions to some issues are not always possible. Although St James's Church, in its openness of heart and mind, includes Alternatives, the ideas in this programme are not necessarily representative of the church itself.

Our Prices As a not-for-profit, we strive to keep our events as affordable as possible, offering significant concessions and investing in our community. For 10 years we have managed to keep our Monday entrance prices the same, but sadly due to increasing overheads and costs, we have had to increase our prices to remain sustainable. We hope you understand and continue to support the work we do.

The news of Nelson Mandela’s passing came as we were finalising this programme. As he was one of the most inspirational people of this or any time, we felt compelled to use a quote by him on our front cover. These words also seem to capture a strong theme of this programme….about the importance of our taking action to improve our world. We all have the potential to change things for the better, whether it’s in our family, our work place, our local community, or at a national or global level. People come to Alternatives for many reasons, maybe the desire to learn about new ways of living and being, or to explore their spirituality, or to meet and be with others who are looking for more meaning in their lives. Whatever your reason for coming, you are most welcome. I hope you are truly inspired by our programme. Richard Dunkerley Co-director

Monday 20 January How to Make a Difference JOHN-PAUL FLINTOFF It’s easy to believe that ‘making a difference’ is something best left to ‘special’ people like Gandhi, Nelson Mandela or Mother Theresa. The reality is that we all make a difference all the time. As soon as we recognise that, we empower ourselves to think about making what impact we would like to make, and then to get started on it. This evening, JohnPaul Flintoff invites you to think about the things you would really like to achieve, and to work out how you can get started right now. Whether you want to make a difference to yourself, your family, your place of work or your community, this talk aims to provide inspiration, a healthy dose of realism, and the tools to impact the world around you. John-Paul Flintoff is a writer, performer and activist. He worked for 15 years as a writer on The Financial Times and The Sunday Times. His books include Sew Your Own and How to Change the World. flintoff.org 7pm–8.30pm £15/£10 on door £12/£8 online

Monday 27 January Finding Earth, Finding Soul TIM ‘MAC’ MACARTNEY This is the story of one man’s search for meaning and purpose in a society that is captivated by values and beliefs that are assaulting the Earth’s life-systems and collapsing society upon itself. The talk explores some of the profound teachings and insights that Mac Macartney experienced at the hands of his Native American mentors when they promised to help him open the hidden gateways to the wild truth of Britain's ancient spiritual past. The talk weaves together the story of Britain's indigenous past, the centre of inspiration Mac founded in Devon (Embercombe), the adventure and challenge of weaving 'earth wisdom’ into our contemporary consumer society mind-set, and the desire that sits deep within each of us for a return to community, sacredness, and belonging. Tim ‘Mac’ Macartney is the founder of Embercombe, a social enterprise in Devon, which seeks to inspire committed action for a truly sustainable world. Over a period of 20 years he was mentored and coached by Native American medicine people. Mac leads Embercombe’s work with corporations, and sits on the sustainability advisory panels for Procter & Gamble, Lafarge, and Lend Lease. timmacmacartney.co.uk 7pm–8.30pm £15/£10 on door £12/£8 online

Compassion is the awareness of a deep bond between yourself and all creatures – Eckhart Tolle

CONVERSATIONS What are you most grateful for in your life? I am truly grateful for the education I received for it has led me on a path of self-awareness that has culminated in a 17year ecstatic ‘happily ever after’ experience with my partner Margaret, my children and the wonderful community of higher consciousness individuals in which I now find myself.

Bruce Lipton PhD is an internationally recognised leader in bridging science and spirit and is the author of . How did you come to be on your current path? In 1967, I was offered the opportunity for graduate study in the laboratory of Professor Irwin R. Konigsberg, a pioneer in stem cell biology. Forty-five years ago, I was cloning stem cells at a time when there were only a handful of stem cell biologists in the entire world. My research revealed that the environment controlled the biology and fate of cells. This finding conflicted with the prevailing notion of genetic determinism, the belief that genes controlled biology. This conventional belief leads us to believe, that in regard to our health and fate, we are “victims” of our genetic heritage. In contrast, my experiments revealed we are actually “masters” of our biology, simply because we can control our environment, and more importantly, our perception of the environment. An understanding of the structure and function of the cell membrane provided profound insight into the molecular mechanisms of the cell’s nervous system. These findings defined the molecular mechanism of perception, revealing the fundamental physical units of consciousness. This discovery led to a new mathematically definable version of evolution and, simultaneously, to the importance of the developmental “programming” of consciousness that ultimately shapes our world experiences. What has been the biggest learning in your life? The insights acquired on the mechanics of the cell’s “brain” directly led me to an understanding that we are spiritual beings inhabiting a cellular “virtual reality suit.” Endowed with our physical bodies, we can consciously create life experiences while acquiring sensory awareness such as vision, taste, touch, and emotional sensations, such as love, pleasure, and joy. The same insight also leads to the reality that we can reincarnate again and again. With this knowledge of “self,” I experienced “selfempowerment, the ability to take back control over my biology and life experiences. Through an understanding of the nature of subconscious programming and the ability to rewrite limiting, self-sabotaging and disempowering beliefs (programs), I have come to the awareness that life on planet Earth is tantamount to living Heaven-on-Earth.

Who have been your most significant teachers. Firstly, I attribute my research career to the foundational vision and excitement of science provided by my elementary school science teacher David Bangelsdorf. Later, my interest in science was further enhanced by the loveable and grandfather-like genius, Albert Einstein. I attribute my career in academia and research to the powerful education provided by my dear mentor, Professor Irwin Konigsberg. Lastly, with special appreciation to Margaret, one of the most significant teachers about life … in my life. What are the most common challenges that the people you work with experience? I believe that the most important challenge that people must overcome is the fact that our conscious minds, which control our wishes, desires and aspirations operates less than 5% of the time. Most of our biology and life experiences are shaped by the invisible behaviours controlled by our “programmed” subconscious minds. The vast majority of acquired unconscious programs were downloaded during the first 7 years of our lives by observing the behaviours of others, especially our family and community. Consequently, 95% of our lives are principally shaped by the subconscious mind’s beliefs and behaviours acquired from others. That is, until we re-empower our selves by reprogramming the limiting subconscious beliefs acquired in our infancy. Letting go of the influence of this early programming is actually a physiologic process that occurs when we fall in love, a time in which we consciously create the “Heaven-on-Earth” honeymoon experience. What advice would you offer to our audience? As offered in the movie, The Matrix, take the red pill and get out of the program! The joyous world of a honeymoon love is our real-world experience of what life would be like if we actually did take the red pill. Learning and employing the knowledge of the “new” biology and its insight into the nature of programming offer an opportunity re-empower your life so that each of us can share the Heaven this planet offers. What fills your heart with joy or makes you feel alive? Assured with the knowing that I am an immortal spirit operating a miraculous living virtual reality suit, allows me to be free to Love myself, which in turn, allows me to fully Love others. My love with Margaret, my family, and especially, Mother Gaia have allowed me to truly experience the magnificence of life and the majesty of our beautiful planet. Bruce Lipton is leading a seminar The Science of Creating Heaven on Earth at Regent’s College on Saturday 31 May.

Monday 3 March The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences PENNY SARTORI A near-death experience (NDE) is an intense psychological experience that can happen to a person close to death or in a situation of personal or emotional crisis. Recent hospital research is showing that NDEs can no longer be dismissed as hallucinations or aberrations of a dying brain. Whether it's a perception of movement through space, of light and darkness or an intense emotion, NDEs undoubtedly occur and have very real, often dramatic and life-changing after effects. In this talk, Dr Penny Sartori will discuss NDEs and the vast range of illuminating stories of her patients and others who have reached out to her. She will argue that a greater understanding of NDEs can not only enhance the way in which we care for dying patients, but can also transform your current worldview and help you live more fully. Penny Sartori PhD is a leading expert in NDEs and undertook the UK's first long-term prospective study. She was a intensive care nurse for 17 years in a major hospital and worked daily with dying patients. After undertaking a five year research project into NDEs, Penny was awarded a PhD and has written, lectured and broadcast widely on the subject. As he prepares the sequel to Fingerprints to be published in 2015 Graham takes time out from field trips and research to share his latest findings with us. The talk will be illustrated with stunning images. Graham Hancock has become recognised as an unconventional thinker who raises controversial questions about humanity's past. As you breathe in, cherish yourself. As you breathe out, cherish all beings – The Dalai Lama

CONVERSATIONS/TALKS Dina Glouberman PhD is the visionary co-founder of Skyros Holistic Holidays. How did you come to be on your current path? I have always needed to get to my deepest truth and then create my life from the inside out–and to offer this possibility to others. Skyros Holidays were part of this path of truth, because through creating a particular kind of community and courses and authentic warmth, people could within days speak their truth on a profound level to people they had just met. This is, I believe, why so many people have found their time in Skyros to be a turning point in their lives. Professionally, humanistic psychology and psychotherapy and then imagework were my way in to the truth of human experience. Then through some altered state experiences, I also came to know about my spiritual truth and begin my spiritual path. What has been the biggest learning in your life? Creating and running Skyros was a truly magical learning experience. I discovered that an environment made up of the things that made me happy–community, authenticity, laughter, learning, heart connections, and of course sunshine and sea–was also healing and magical for others. Monday 7 April You Are What You Imagine DINA GLOUBERMAN Are you feeling stuck or burnt out, facing difficult changes, or simply yearning for something you can’t imagine having? This talk will introduce you to Dina’s three-step approach to new beginnings, which will help you: recognise the catalyst that will start you moving in a new direction; get a vision of the future that would be right for you; and find your way forward to a new beginning. The secret is to educate your imagination to bring together the spiritual and the practical and learn to attend to the whisperings of your heart and soul while being grounded in the ‘real world’. If you are not where you want to be, learn to imagine better! Dina Glouberman PhD is the visionary co-founder of Skyros Holistic Holidays and has been a pioneer for over 30 years in using imagework to enhance and transform everyday life. What are you most grateful for in your life? I’m grateful that I have been given so many people and things to love, including of course life itself, and also for the fact that I have had the great privilege to do work that I love, that expresses my creativity and that can make a difference for others. Who have been your most significant teachers. The living teacher who most inspires me is the Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. He seems to me to have truly gone beyond his personal self. It is as if he breathes us all in and breathes out love. What are the most common challenges that the people you work with experience? The worst times for people are when they feel that they are rudderless, or have got it all wrong. At these moments, they have no framework of meaning within which they can love themselves, understand what is happening to them, see their own possibilities, and guide their lives forward. What advice would you offer to our audience Try looking at yourself with a look that combines compassion for your pain and limitations and also respect for your magnificence. With this look, you can get yourself through the most painful and debilitating situations and find a way through to the future. What fills your heart with joy or makes you feel alive? This morning, I watched the red sun rise from the sea. Witnessing such a sunrise is probably my greatest joy.

Love Comes From Heaven LORNA BYRNE This event is the UK launch for Lorna Byrne’s new book Love Comes From Heaven. Lorna has been seeing angels since she was a baby. She also sees love as a physical force, something which she has never talked about before. This allows her a unique insight into the importance of love, its origin and the different ways we can love. Love Comes from Heaven will transform the way you think about love; it will stir up the love that is within you, helping you to love yourself more, making you more compassionate, happier and helping to change your life and the lives of the people around you. At this event on the day of publication of her new book, Lorna Byrne will be interviewed by Alternatives co-director Mary Daniels for an hour, followed by audience questions. The Future of Wellbeing DEEPAK CHOPRA

The Science of Creating Heaven on Earth BRUCE LIPTON

Deepak Chopra returns to his health and wellness roots with an exciting new approach to holistic health that focuses on the hungers we experience physically, mentally, and spiritually. What are you hungry for? Food? Love? Self-esteem? Security? Acceptance? Peace? Join Deepak for an inspirational day as he creates a roadmap for higher health based on the latest findings in both mainstream and alternative medicine. Are we in the midst of a major paradigm shift in science? Is the universe becoming self aware in the human nervous system? Is the next stage of human development conscious evolution? Can we develop a higher awareness of who we are, what we yearn for, and what we can ultimately do about it? How does our understanding of consciousness also enhance our capacity for total wellbeing (physical, emotional, spiritual, social, community, financial and ecological)? Deepak will address all these questions as well as practical ways to experience higher consciousness, transformation and healing.

A renaissance in science is shattering old myths and rewriting the story of life. Bruce Lipton today introduces a “new” biology that illuminates the science of mind-body medicine. The profound insights offered by leading edge research completely revise our understanding of the nature of life. The new science of how consciousness interfaces biology reveals how our thoughts, attitudes and beliefs create the conditions of our body and our place in the world. Understanding how our developmental programming shapes the unconscious behaviours that create or undermine our wishes, desires and loving partnerships, is fundamental for acquiring self-empowerment and becoming the master of your fate rather than the ‘victim’ of your programs.

Deepak Chopra is the author of more than seventy books translated into over eighty-five languages, including twentyone New York Times bestsellers. He is the founder of The Chopra Foundation, co-Founder of The Chopra Centre and serves as an Adjunct Professor at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, Columbia University. Time magazine has described Dr Chopra as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century and credits him as ‘the poet-prophet of alternative medicine’. deepakchopra.com 11am–5pm Doors open 9.30am Premiere Circle £115, Front Stalls £105 Standard £85, Concessions £65 Seats are numbered and will be allocated in each section according to the date of booking. Who Would You Be Without Your Story? BYRON KATIE The Work of Byron Katie has been called the most powerful self-realisation technique ever developed. The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It is a way to understand what is hurting you, and to address your problems with clarity. People who do The Work as an ongoing practice report life-changing results. In this seminar, Katie, with her humour and lovingly incisive clarity, will introduce you to The Work and show you how self-inquiry can bring you a joy-filled life. Participants at recent intensives have called it “revelatory” and “the most powerful experience of my life.” Byron Katie has one job: to teach people how to stop suffering. In 1986, at the bottom of a ten-year fall into depression, anger, and addiction, she woke up one morning and realised that all suffering comes from believing our thoughts. thework.com 10am–5.30pm £75/£55 Concs Logan Hall, Institute of Education 20 Bedford Way, WC1H 0AL

EFT and Matrix Reimprinting KARL DAWSON

Cellular Awakening BARBARA WREN

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) stimulates the body’s energy meridian points by tapping on them with ones fingertips and helps to clear emotional blocks in the energy field. In 2006, a shift in awareness enabled Karl Dawson to gain new understanding behind the causation and resolution of trauma and this led him to create Matrix Reimprinting. Matrix Reimprinting is a set of techniques which can change your relationship to your past and dramatically transform your physical and emotional health in the present. It combines EFT with understandings from new biology, epigenetic and quantum science, to create rapid personal change. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of EFT and how to apply these skills with Matrix Reimprinting. Come away with potent, practical tools for self-transformation.

In this workshop Barbara Wren will explore the vital role nutrition plays in integrating heavenly and earthly energies in the body. You will see how each cell is a microcosm of the macrocosm, and how it is up to you how much of the universal information enters your microcosm. Two of the main areas of focus will be the nutritional support of the water component of our body, and the light storage and production potential within each of us. You will study the influential factors of your nutritional needs to help evaluate the least amount of stress in your body. The overriding principle for the main component of your body, water, is stress creating dehydration and eventually dehydration creating stress from within. The water component of our body is where we store the universal wisdom so the focus of nutrition should be to expand this facility.

Karl Dawson is an EFT master and the creator of Matrix Reimprinting. He has taught thousands of students worldwide how to transform their emotional health by releasing stress and trauma from their energy systems. He is the author of Matrix Reimprinting using EFT. matrixreimprinting.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£50 Concs Colet House, 151 Talgarth Rd, W14 9DA

Seeing Naturally Without Glasses PETER GRUNWALD

Dreams of Awakening CHARLIE MORLEY

Would you like to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses; eyestrain; back or neck pain and postural tension and lack of mental focus? In this experiential and highly informative workshop, you will learn that it’s not the eyes that see, but the brain. Peter teaches that brain function can change, therefore eyesight and vision are flexible and can follow the changes of the brain. The Eyebody Method coordinates physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of seeing. Glasses or surgery address the symptoms, not the causes of visual dysfunction. Today, you will learn how to begin to replace these with: visual and mental clarity; strain free read- ing and computer use; improved posture, coordination and wellbeing; awakened creativity, imagination and intuition; and increased attention and presence.

This unique workshop will include an overview of the history, science and practice of lucid dreaming from both the Western psychological and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. You will learn practices enabling you to lucid dream and to engage the wider holistic benefits of lucid dreaming and conscious sleeping which these practices offer. Lucid dreaming is an important precursory skill to the Tibetan tradition of Dream Yoga and these teachings offer a practical way to learn this incredibly beneficial skill. The aim of this workshop is not just about being aware within your dreams and tapping into the wellspring of wisdom that resides in the dreaming mind, but also about how to wake up to life and to live lucidly with joy and confidence.

Peter Grunwald is the founder of the Eyebody Method. He wore glasses for 27 years for myopia and astigmatism from the age of three. After training in the Alexander Technique and the Bates Method, it took only 18 months until he was totally free of them. He lives in New Zealand and has been presenting worldwide for the past 19 years. eyebody.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£50 Concs Columbia Hotel, 95-99 Lancaster Gate, W2 3NS

Parenting as a Team ANDREW MARSHALL

The Enneagram: Through Personality to Spirit KAREN WEBB

Bringing up the next generation is possibly the most fulfilling and life-affirming thing anyone can do, but children also seem to have a mission to challenge everything they come into contact with from your clothes and furniture, to your nerves, sex-life and even your marriage. In this workshop, Andrew Marshall will cover: * Balancing all your priorities: children, relationship, work and self * Resolving arguments about childcare and chores * Maintaining the loving connection with your partner * How having a child can throw up issues from your own childhood * Dealing with your own parents * Building a united front whether your children are toddlers, school age or teens. The workshop will include experiential exercises and is suitable for both individuals and couples

The Enneagram is a dynamic and ancient model of humanity. It describes nine personality types and the direct link between the psychological and spiritual aspects of each. With extraordinarily accurate insight into our day-to-day behaviour, preoccupations, strengths and weaknesses, it also shows our own most fruitful approach to growth. We discover that negative emotions can become the raw material for liberation. In this workshop, you will discover: your own Enneagram type, the spiritual gifts of each of the nine types, the hidden emotional and mental concerns masking these gifts, some of the patterns of behaviour created by these unconscious habits of perception, how love as well as stress 'changes' your personality, and how to start to use your 'negative' patterns to fuel growth.

Andrew G Marshall is a marital therapist and author. He trained with Relate almost thirty ago and now leads a team of therapists in private practice in London and Sussex. His books include I love you but I'm not in love with you and I love you but you always put me last: How to childproof your marriage. andrewgmarshall.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£50 Concs Columbia Hotel, 95-99 Lancaster Gate, W2 3NS

SACRED JOURNEYS/PERU RETREAT

Chris Waters

15 – 30 September

Peru: A 14 Day Shamanic Journey CHRIS WATERS AND MALCOLM STERN Travel with the Q’ero shaman of the Inca tradition, as we follow the course of the River Urubamba as it weaves its way up the Sacred Valley from Pisaq to Machu Picchu. Visit ancient and beautiful temples in the landscape along the way: Moray, the temple of the feminine where we sit in the landscape of circles; Tipon, the temple of the waters; Ollantaytambo, the temple of the Falcon; Sacsayhuaman, the temple of the moon; sacred places and more secret places where few tourists go where we find waterfalls, caves and lakes… and places to honour our relationship to Mother Earth, Father Sun and all our relations. At Machu Pichu, we enter the Crystal City at dawn. At the temple of the sun, we witness the sun rise above the mountain, standing spellbound, as fingers of light spread across this extraordinary landscape carved from the jungle. After 7 days in the Sacred Valley, we head across the Altiplano, following the ley lines as we make our way to Lake Titicaca. We are blessed to have as our guide for this part of our journey, Jorge Luis Delgado, author of Andean Awakening, you will hear his passion for this land as he accompanies us on the journey across the Sea at the top of the world. We spend a night on the island of Amantani, on Lake Titicaca. Staying with families here is a wonderful experience and a great lesson in simplicity, humility, beauty and generosity of spirit. We also spend one night camping out under the stars on the uninhabited island of Umayo, watching the Milky Way above us lighting our path. This is a memory-making journey of a life time! We stay in four-star hotels along the way. There are opportunities to have healing sessions with the shaman of the Q’ero tradition whilst we are in the Sacred Valley. And we will be exploring and experiencing the ceremony and rituals of this tradition as we go along. This journey has been designed to offer you a series of wonderful experiences that will touch your soul and perhaps transform your view of the world. Please visit our website for full information or call Chris Waters on 07765 258614. Chris Waters teaches ‘the way of the shaman’ and is a practitioner of the healing tools of the Inca tradition.
