alternatives.org.uk

About Alternatives Alternatives explores world spirituality and personal growth through regular events and online resources. Based at St James’s Church, Piccadilly since 1982, Alternatives is an independent not-for-profit organisation serving a global audience.

The new year is a time for reflecting on our lives….letting go of the year just gone and resolving to make changes and grow in the year ahead. Last year, we said farewell to two well-known teachers, Susan Jeffers and Gabrielle Roth who both died in late October. I had the pleasure of hearing both women speak at Alternatives. Susan Jeffers, the author of Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, inspired many people to follow their dreams and transform their lives. That book was one of the first I read in the personal growth field and it gave me courage to leave my corporate job and search for a path with heart. Gabrielle Roth created the 5 Rhythms movement practice which has spread worldwide. The 5 Rhythms have been one of the key inspirations of my life in so many ways. I met my wife at a 5 Rhythms class and we now have two beautiful boys. So I feel profound gratitude for Gabrielle Roth and what she created. It’s a time of change at Alternatives with Mary Daniels becoming co-director after Steve Nobel stepped down in December. I worked with Steve for 12 years and so, for me, it’s been a letting go of a close working relationship which has been very creative, rewarding and a lot of fun. Thanks Steve for everything you’ve given us. Mary brings a wealth of talent, imagination, humour and energy to Alternatives. Vivien Pailas has also recently joined us working on social media and marketing. Whatever you want to do, however you want to grow, may this year bring you many blessings. Richard Dunkerley Co-Director

Wow what an amazing start to 2013...becoming co-director of Alternatives. I first came across Alternatives approximately 11 years ago, a very close friend of mine, sensed it was what I needed (thank you John) and he was right. I will never forget how I felt when I first walked into St. James. It was like I could breathe again, the overwhelming sense of serenity and calm rippled through every cell of my body. It shouted out sanctuary, something I so needed at what was a very painful time in my life. I came to feel calm, I came to still the crazy questions that were running through my mind, I came to remember what it felt like to come home, to myself. Alternatives has this magical way of creating a space of pure acceptance, something I had never really experienced before. Not only do you get to listen to some life changing and inspiring talks, it is also a space that allows people to be themselves, to reconnect with what matters, to drop the masks. For me Alternatives represents a rebirth and re-connection to myself, my passions and source. I have a lot to thank Alternatives for, it has played a key role in helping me discover the woman I am today. A woman who can finally look in the mirror and be proud of herself; a woman who is discovering what it means to move from a space of knowing to a space of doing and being. I want to thank St James’s for the incredible space, my amazing Alternatives family, Steve, Richard, Tom, Susanna, Vivien, the Trustees and Esther Waldron, our previous director, for cheering me on! Q+A What has been the biggest learning in your life? Life is short. Not only that, but it's the life in your years, not just the years in your life. Roman Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca has greatly influenced how I prioritise in my life and operate in high-stress environments. What are you most grateful for in your life? The good health of my family and friends. And chocolate croissants on Saturdays. All work and no chocolate makes Jack a dull boy.

© Daniel Krieger

Tim Ferriss is the author of the No 1 New York Times bestsellers The 4-Hour Work Week, The 4-Hour Body, and his latest The 4-Hour Chef. How did you become interested in meta-learning? At age 15, I left the US for my first extended trip abroad: 1 year in Japan as an exchange student. I'd failed Spanish and it was purely sink or swim. Even though I'd concluded I was ‘bad at languages’ like most people, I used unconventional methods (comic books, judo textbooks, stand-up comedy) to learn to read, write, and speak Japanese fluently in 11 months. I've studied the world's fastest learners for 15+ years now.

Who has been your biggest teacher or inspiration. What inspires you? Besides Seneca, I would include Richard Feynman and my incredible high school wrestling coach, John Buxton, who took me from nothing to All-American finalist. What inspires me? Teachers who create students better than themselves. That's powerful. What are the most common challenges that the people you work with experience? Fear and paralysis by analysis. Tim Ferris will be speaking at Alternatives on Monday 14 January

What are you most grateful for in your life? I am most grateful for existence, for all that exists. Who has been your biggest teacher or inspiration. What inspires you? There have been and there are so many great teachers ...Rumi, Christ, Thomas Merton, Joanna Macy, John Burnside...but the greatest teacher I have found is Christ. I am inspired by the way rain falls onto leaves, how the gulls fly home, how the young and old express love alike. I am inspired by the human journey.

Peter Owen Jones is a parish priest in Firle, East Sussex.

What are the most common challenges that the people you work with experience? The challenge of human identity, what it is to be human. Are we despoilers, eradicators, takers or are we guardians, nurturers, lovers?

He has presented several BBC television series including Extreme Pilgrim, Around the World in 80 Faiths and How to Live a Simple Life.

What advice would you offer to our audience? Love life.

How did you come to be on your current path? I am not ever sure what my current path is, the scenery changes with each new discovery and each leads me down a different path. Since my childhood I have always felt called to go into the distance both externally and internally.

What fills your heart with joy or makes you feel alive? The miracle of music. The pregnancy of silence. Falling asleep with the wind on the windows. Working as a shepherd. Cities in the rain. Intimacy. Zu Studios (in Lewes). What the soil gives.

What has been the biggest learning in your life? C S Lewis wrote...“You don't have a soul, you are a soul, you have a body.” When we know ourselves as soul everything changes mainly because we see others as souls like us.

Peter Owen Jones will be speaking at Alternatives on Monday 25 February

Monday 4 February Trusting Your Inner Psychic SALLY MORGAN What happens when we pass? Is there a heaven? Do we meet our loved ones again in the afterlife? In today’s society many more people are open to the possibility of an afterlife. Psychics and mediums are more accepted and for many their work brings great joy, comfort and support in times of need. This interactive evening encourages audience participation in order to help people recognise and trust their instincts towards their own inner psychic abilities.

Monday 11 February The Alchemy of Intimacy MAHASATVAA MA ANANDA SARITA Tantra is an art, a science, a spiritual path and a lifestyle. It is a path of transformation with roots going back to shamanic traditions and the origins of yoga. The threshold of puberty in indigenous cultures is celebrated with a rite of passage, educating and honouring the soon-to-be adult. Our society bypasses this and the result is that ‘rites of passages’ often happen through alcohol, drugs and porn influenced sex. This talk offers a map of initiation, into secrets of sex love and relating, which if applied to our culture, can bring about a radical and positive transformation in how we experience ourselves and our partners.

Sally Morgan is one of the UK's best known psychics. In 2005, her abilities were scientifically tested by Professor Gary Schwartz. who said that “Sally is one of the most accurate mediums I have ever come across. I would rate her as one of the top five in the world.” Sally is also a successful author with three best-selling books, My Psychic Life, Healing Spirits and Life After Death. sallymorgan.tv 7pm–8.30pm £15/£10 Concs

TALKS Monday 18 February The Power of Positive News MARTYN LEWIS & SEAN DAGAN WOOD As the ethics of the press are being increasingly scrutinised following events such as the News of the World phone-hacking scandal, people are also now beginning to question the very nature of news content itself, which is dominated by bad news. Does the immense volume of negative headlines really reflect reality? Former BBC news presenter Martyn Lewis, and editor of Positive News, Seán Dagan Wood, believe that there is now an opportunity – and a necessity – for a paradigm shift in the media, towards a more constructive approach. In tonight’s talk, they will explore the role and potential of the media, and discuss how, by reporting on successes, achievements and solutions to the challenges facing us, the media can truly serve society. Martyn Lewis CBE anchored every mainstream national news programme of ITV and BBC during 32 years as a television journalist,. The History of Independent Television News describes him as ‘simply one of the best news story film-makers ITN ever employed.’ Sean Dagan Wood is the editor of Positive News, the world’s first newspaper dedicated to publishing credible and relevant good news. 7pm–8.30pm £10/£5 Concs positivenews.org.uk

Monday 25 February How to Live a Simple Life PETER OWEN JONES “Living simply is perhaps a response to the fear based model of amassing more.” Inspired by his experiences in 'Around the World in 80 Faiths', Peter Owen Jones returned to the TV screens with a BBC2 programme called ‘How to Live a Simple Life.’ In the programme Peter decides to follow the example of medieval saint Francis of Assisi and give up money to find fulfilment. This evening, Peter explains why he tried to follow the example of St Francis of Assisi and will share the highs and lows of his experiences. He will share wisdom and advice for anyone seeking the answers to the same questions.

Monday 4 March The Genius in You JAMIE CATTO We are all so used to only showing each other a fraction of who we truly are. We’ve learnt to hide the parts of ourselves that might be perceived as weak or needy, angry or unattractive. These qualities have in the past brought us experiences of rejection and loneliness. So to avoid this risk of rejection, we edit ourselves little by little, hiding anything unattractive that looks like it might sabotage love and acceptance from others. We can become a smaller, less authentic version of who we truly are. Tonight is an invitation to take the journey together back towards 100% and show ourselves in all our raw glory

Peter Owen Jones is a parish priest in East Sussex. For the last seven years he has also worked for the BBC presenting critically acclaimed programmes such as Extreme Pilgrim, Around the World in 80 Faiths and How to Live a Simple Life. Monday 11 March The Angel Whisperer KYLE GRAY Your guardian angels have been with you since the day you were born. They look at you with the eyes of unconditional love and are desperate to help and support you on your journey. Working with angels is simpler than you imagine and you don't have to have a special ‘gift’ to do so. Join Kyle Gray tonight and learn down to earth simple techniques that allow you to create a connection with your angels, or strengthen the one you already have. Become aware of affirmative prayer, visualisation techniques and how to 'tune in' to your angels. During the course of the evening Kyle will also perform audience readings.

Monday 18 March Cellular Awakening BARBARA WREN What if most of what you had been told about health and the human body was wrong? Tonight’s talk will shatter many of the myths that currently exist around health and illness. Tonight you will discover that the human body needs to integrate heavenly and earthly energies in order to function and exist. Light is central to the working of each and every cell of our body, without light we could not use oxygen. Central to this idea is the understanding of how each cell, if nurtured correctly, will store the photons of light around itself like a halo. This is the physical creation of the light body which we so frequently hear talked about.

Kyle Gray has been blessed by the presence of angels from the age of 4. He became the UK's youngest professional psychic medium at the age of 16. Kyle, now 24, with his natural upfront approach, aims to give guidance and insight that is approachable and understandable. He is a columnist for the Scottish Sun newspaper. kylegray.co.uk 7pm–8.30pm £10/£5 Concs

WORKSHOPS Saturday 19 January

Transcendental Consciousness THOMAS HUBL What tools can we use to tap into a new state of consciousness? What do presence, transparency, compassion and integral spirituality mean? How do we live and work if we radically make awakening the core? And what does it mean for our communities and the collective? A collective consciousness is emerging more and more on the evolutionary surface of life. We can start to experience a new awakening that takes us beyond the usual forms of individual experience towards transparent communication, recognising experiential spaces inside people, naturally extended perception abilities, elevated levels of synchronicity and transcendence. Today Thomas Hübl will present the four pillars that are crucial to his work: * The integration of unintegrated parts; * The connection to the future potential of life; * Transcendence into timeless ever-present consciousness; * And being active in the market place of daily life.

Plant Spirit Medicine ELIOT COWAN Plants are vital natural resources, but do they have more to offer other than food, fibre, oxygen and fuel? For thousands of years, humans and plants have lived together. Like us, plants have spirit, and their spirit can nurture and heal us. What can the natural world teach you? In this workshop, you will explore your relationship with plants as wise elder guides to the knowledge and power of nature. Without ingesting any substances, you will take the help of household shamanic methods in your exploration and discovery Whether you live in the city or the country, whether you are a spiritual veteran or novice, this workshop is relevant to all. The Amazing Power of Your Voice SARAH WARWICK

Tantra and Intimacy MAHASATVAA MA ANANDA SARITA

Singing is one of the most healing and inspirational activities we can do. It is also fun, energising, relaxing, heartwarming, immune-boosting and creative - and everyone can do it! Through the natural voice we will tap into our innate vitality, promoting a profound sense of well-being and connection with others. It is less about technique and more about allowing your voice to emerge from the heart. We will explore the healing power of sound, learning to use the natural voice and pure vocal tones as a simple but powerful tool for deep relaxation. We will tap into the creative voice through improvisation and simple song-making. The day will include: * Uplifting harmony songs from around the world * Mantras, Taize, and sacred songs * Movement, breathing, toning and how to use sound for deep relaxation * Group improvisation and song making.

Tantra is an art, a spiritual path and a lifestyle. It is a path of transformation with roots going back to shamanic traditions and the origins of yoga. It is a path of expansion, embracing all facets of life. Unlike some other traditions Tantra accepts sexual energy and may use it as a route to higher consciousness – but that is just one facet among many. The Shivaistic stream from India says yes to love, yes to life and yes to sex. Every aspect of the human being is honoured. This experiential workshop offers a safe and welcoming atmosphere to explore the ‘six essentials for intimate connection’emotional fluidity, breath, ease in movement, sound, sensitive touch and communication. As we open up these portals, whether alone or with a partner, we find ecstatic transformation in our life. There will be no nudity or explicit sexual contact.

Sarah Warwick is a singer whose journey has taken her through pop stardom in the 1990s, through three bouts of breast cancer, to running highly successful personal development workshops in singing, songwriting, recording, sound therapy, corporate energising and team-building. Each of us lives two lives. One is a life of imagination, and the other of our external reality. The problems start when these two realities don't match up. For some, their inner reality is dramatic, limited, stuck, dull or worse. If the external reality does not match up with the inner, then unconsciously we will create drama, or horror stories on the outside. The flip side of this is that some have an unrealistic imagining of how their life should be, and when the outer reality does not match up, they become resentful and angry. If we feel out of control of our lives, we talk about ‘losing the plot’, and this is an accurate description of the reality. This workshop will show you how to become author and editor of your life script. By rewriting the script of your life you take back control, create a strong character for yourself, theme the story of your life, and, should you choose it, a happy ending.

In this workshop you will be introduced to a new way of understanding yourself as a woman that is deeply healing and liberating. When a woman understands the natural power of her menstrual cycle–physically, psychologically and spiritually–she unlocks an inner resource that transforms her relationship with herself, others and the planet. In this experiential and highly informative workshop, you will learn how to restore your connection to the intelligence and creative resources of your cycle and use this knowledge to heal symptoms and experience a new feeling of power and possibility. This workshop is for any woman who: suffers from menstrual or other health problems; wants to make peace with her body; is on personal and spiritual developmental journey; or is a counsellor, coach, psychotherapist or health professional.

Ursula James is one of the leading hypnotherapy practitioners and teachers in the UK. She is a Visiting Teaching Fellow at Oxford University Medical School and an Honorary Lecturer at Barts and the London Medical School. WORKSHOPS Saturday 9 March

Riding the Wave to Freedom CLAIRE SCHRADER This workshop is an opportunity to experience the ancient medicine of ritual theatre that enabled our ancestors to heal and transform. The journey will start with an invitation to leave the real world behind and enter into the fabulous world of myth, larger than life characters and experiences – of gods, goddesses, heroes, beasts and spirits. We will be focusing on a Greek myth that explores the human quest to break free of the shackles that are holding us back and keeping us in bondage from expressing the vital and alive spirit that lives within us. For a while it may feel you are just having fun… expressing the archetypal characters, but something very powerful is happening too. You are releasing the suppressed emotion that lies buried within you, and liberating the parts of yourself that have been locked away. Out of this may come healing, revelation or insight into an issue or an energetic shift that will bring a new way of being in the world. Anna Watkins

Is Your Life Mapped Out? DAVID HAMILTON In this workshop you will gain a deeper understanding of the forces that impact the conditions of your life, including genetic and epigenetic forces, cosmic forces, as well as deeper spiritual ones. You will also learn more about the balance between ‘forces of destiny’ and the power of your own intention. You will learn about the nature of reality and the nature of consciousness and will hear some pioneering research into the nature of interconnectedness in space, time (quantum entanglement in time), consciousness and discuss what this means for us. The workshop will leave you with a greater understanding of reality and a clearer vision for your own future through exercises designed to tease out much more of what you really do, and help you formulate powerful goals that will help to shape your life. You will learn simple, spiritual and practical rules that govern how we attract people and events in our lives. David Hamilton PhD is passionate about bridging spirituality and science. He is the author of It's the Thought That Counts, Destiny vs Free Will, How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body, and Is Your Life Mapped Out? Metatronic Healing CLARE GANNON Metatronic Healing is an angelic healing method guided by the energies of Archangel Metatron that removes ancient traumas, destructive emotions and limiting beliefs from deep body memory. The Metatronic frequencies progressively dissolves the dense thought forms of fear and lack through soft, loving, powerful vibrations of light-energy. The aim of Metatronic Healing is to remove the energy of your ‘story’ from the body’s cellular memory and DNA, and to activate the heart centre, plugging you in to your authentic power, creativity and true essence. As you receive the higher frequencies which gently permeate your heart-centre and your energy body, they start to restore the forgotten matrix: the divinely geometrically perfect template of your original, divinely-given light nature, reclaiming your authentic power and truth. During the day you will receive two Metatronic transmissions giving you an experience of this transformational healing. Clare Gannon is a facilitator for Metatronic Healing® in the UK & Europe, a radical healing system founded by Pippa Merivale in 2007. Clare has a wide experience of natural energy healing techniques and has worked with a variety of client groups. metatronic-life.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£40 Concs Park Crescent Conference Centre 229 Great Portland St, W1W 5PN

Ho’oponopono ROBERT BERMAN If you’re looking to clean and clear the interior space of you, then this workshop is ideal for you. In many Polynesian cultures, it is believed that a person’s errors cause bad luck or illness. Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness which corrects, restores and maintains good relationships among family members by getting to the root cause and sources of trouble.. This simple, yet very powerful, ancient healing technique used together with ‘unhooking the anchors’ make this a great opportunity to clear and heal anything that you are still holding resistance towards. This is an agreement to in-tend, to create, and to direct divine loving energy towards all energies that no longer serve you. Robert Berman is an intuitive life coach, shamanic practitioner, an author, photographer and producer of both film and music. While connecting with the elements of water on the Hawaiian Islands and spending time in the Grand Canyon, working with several Native American tribes, Robert was given the name HA’a by a Havasupai girl, which means water. robertberman99.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£40 Concs Park Crescent Conference Centre 229 Great Portland St, W1W 5PN

Seeing Naturally Without Glasses PETER GRUNWALD Would you like to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses; eyestrain; back or neck pain and postural tension and lack of mental focus? In this experiential and highly informative workshop, you will learn that it’s not the eyes that see, but the brain. Peter teaches that brain function can change, therefore eyesight and vision are flexible and can follow the changes of the brain. The Eyebody Method coordinates physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of seeing. Glasses or surgery address the symptoms, not the causes of visual dysfunction. In this workshop you can learn how to begin to replace these with: visual and mental clarity; strain free reading and computer use; improved posture, coordination and well-being; awakened creativity, imagination and intuition; and increased attention and presence. Peter Grunwald is the founder of the Eyebody Method. He wore glasses for 27 years for myopia and astigmatism from the age of three. After training in the Alexander Technique and the Bates Method, it took only 18 months until he was totally free of them. He lives in New Zealand and has been presenting around the world for the past 18 years. eyebody.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£40 Concs Wellington Hotel, 71 Vincent Square, SW1P 2PA

Spiritual Intelligence at Work STEVE NOBEL

Mindfulness for Wellbeing ED HALLIWELL

Work is an important area of everyday life but can be a source of boredom, stress and struggle. It can however also be a way we discover greater meaning, contribution and purpose in life. The emerging world of work is demanding a new way of being and operating. Increasingly, spiritual and personal development ideas are entering into working life through training and coaching programmes. Work that is disconnected from our spirit causes suffering. The good news is that nowadays we can live a spiritual life without retreating from the world. Spiritual intelligence at work is about going beyond conscious states of boredom, stress or fatigue and instead accessing higher states of relaxation, creativity, clarity, curiosity, focus, passion and wisdom. Today is about activating a number of skills and soul-qualities such as: intention; direction; presence; courage; talent; play; time; passion; and possibility. This workshop is an experiential exploration of spiritual intelligence in your work and how these can become a practical force for real change and fulfilment

Stress is endemic in our culture. Rather than constantly trying to keep up, perhaps it’s time for us to slow down, pay attention and notice what we need for our wellbeing. Mindfulness is an integrative, mind-body approach to life that helps people relate effectively to their experiences. It involves paying attention to thoughts, feelings and body sensations in a way that can increase awareness and create space for wise choices. This workshop will introduce you to key principles of living mindfully, and offer some practices to help you cultivate mindfulness in daily life, including sitting meditation, body scanning and mindful movement. We will also explore where mindfulness comes from, as well as some of the latest scientific evidence for its effectiveness. We will see how mindfulness can help us cope with the busyness of everyday life, bring our minds and bodies into balance, relate more skilfully with others and cultivate wellbeing.

Spiritual Responses to Conflict JUSTINE HUXLEY

Loving What Is BYRON KATIE

Conflict is an inevitable part of life. It is often experienced as painful, but is also an enormous source of creativity and opportunity for growth. Without conflict, there would be no growth. Our willingness and ability to enter into the experience of both outer and inner conflict, overcoming our judgement or resistance, will influence our quality of life and our spiritual maturity. In working with conflict it is important to: have an appreciation of going beyond right and wrong – in order to expand our awareness to contain multiple stories, perspectives and truths; be able to stand in another person's shoes; and have tools for processing strong emotions. This workshop will show you how conflict can lead to growth and spiritual opportunity, innovation and creativity, as well as: * Practical tools for understanding dynamics of conflict; * Essential principles for communication; * An introduction to mediation skills and coaching skills; * Exercises for managing strong emotion; * A 6-stage model of conflict management.

The Work of Byron Katie has been called the most powerful self-realisation technique ever developed. Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now, says, “The Work is like a razorsharp sword that cuts through illusion and enables you to know for yourself the timeless essence of your being.” The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It is a way to understand what is hurting you, and to address your problems with clarity. People who do The Work as an ongoing practice report life-changing results. In this seminar, Katie, with her humour and lovingly incisive clarity, will introduce you to The Work and show you how self-inquiry can bring you a joy-filled life. Participants at recent intensives have called it “revelatory” and “the most powerful experience of my life.”

Justine Huxley PhD is community listening coordinator for St Ethelburga's Centre for Peace and Reconcilation. She is part of a Sufi tradition and leads meditation and dream work groups. Byron Katie has one job: to teach people how to stop suffering. In 1986, at the bottom of a ten-year fall into depression, anger, and addiction, she woke up one morning and realised that all suffering comes from believing our thoughts. Katie has worked with millions of people round the world who report profound experiences and lasting transformations. Her books include Loving What Is, I Need Your Love: Is That True? and A Thousand Names for Joy. thework.com 10am–5.30pm £75/£64 Good Friends/£40 Concs Kensington Town Hall, Hornton St, W8 7NX
