WELCOME About Alternatives Alternatives explores world spirituality and personal growth through regular events and online resources. Based at St James’s Church, Piccadilly since 1982, Alternatives is an independent not-for-profit organisation serving a global audience. Don’t you just love it when you have the most amazing conversation with another person or you hear or read a few words where the learning is so powerful, you know you can never go back to the person you were. In an ideal world, if we were fully present we would see the learning in every moment. Sadly if you are anything like myself you welcome reminders. With that in mind I am excited to introduce a series of online deeper conversations, no gimmicks or hidden products pushes at the end. This will be a free, clean, interactive, audience driven, multilevel teaching and learning space, joined by an incredible selection of authors, philanthropists, prolific spiritual teachers, conscious entrepreneurs and as well as everyday people, young and mature. A space where you will hopefully feel inspired and uplifted, awakening the inner teacher within! Plus we are starting Alternatives Book Club! So lots to look forward to! See page 10 for more details. A Friendly Disclaimer We take great care in selecting our speakers and equally we ask you to use your discernment regarding opinions and information presented. We recognise that quick solutions to some issues are not always possible. Although St James's Church, in its openness of heart and mind, includes Alternatives, the ideas in this programme are not necessarily representative of the church itself.
Our Monday Talk Prices As a not-for-profit, we strive to keep our events as affordable as possible, offering significant concessions and investing in our community. For 10 years we have managed to keep our Monday entrance prices the same, but sadly due to increasing overheads and costs, we have had to increase our prices to remain sustainable. We hope you understand and continue to support the work we do.
I love the creative process of producing our programme. Starting with a blank schedule, we carefully choose an eclectic mix of speakers and events – some are booked up to a year in advance and others are more last minute. Our intention is that our programme will inspire you to live more consciously and improve your life...and collectively to create a better world. One of our regular speakers who has spoken at Alternatives over 25 years, Marianne Williamson, is running in California for election to the US Congress. Marianne believes that spirituality should be brought into life and as politics is a part of life, she wants to bring it to that arena to help transform our world. We salute her courage in doing this and wish Marianne well for the elections in early June. We have a fantastic line-up in this programme, including major names like Deepak Chopra, Bruce Lipton and Byron Katie, who we have been hosting for many years and many speakers who are new to us. We are particularly excited to host Adyashanti for the first time. It’s going to be a great summer! Richard Dunkerley, Co-director

Monday 28 April Occupy Spirituality MATTHEW FOX Join Matthew Fox, co-author of Occupy Spirituality (a call to action for a new era of spirituality-infused activism), as he explores the directions the earth is asking us to embark on today. He believes it is time to use our talents in service of compassion and justice, to move beyond our broken systems-economic, political, educational, and religious and discover a spirituality that not only helps us to get along, but also encourages us to revaluate our traditions and create a more sacred and just world. Matthew believes the power lies in bringing together the wisdom of the elders with the knowledge of youth (inter-generational) understanding that no single generation holds all the answers. This talk will explore activism as a form of contemplation and vocation as a spiritual practice. Matthew Fox is a pioneering theologian, activist and passionate advocate of creation spirituality. He has written 31 books including Original Blessing, The Reinvention of Work and his latest Occupy Spirituality: A Radical Vision for a New Generation. He founded the Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality and the University of Creation Spirituality in California. matthewfox.org 7pm–8.30pm £15/£10 on door £12/£8 online
Monday 12 May Breaking Down is Waking Up RUSSELL RAZZAQUE Why is it that the experience of emotional distress, psychological disturbance or even mental illness is so often associated with a deep-seated sense of the spiritual? After nearly 20 years of research, Dr Razzaque is ready to start providing some answers. Drawing on evidence from a range of sources including clinical studies, material from his work in acute mental health services, the latest findings from neuroscience and quantum physics, as well as the ancient insights of meditative traditions. Dr Razzaque believes mental illness can also be seen as an authentic pathway to spiritual awakening. It can be a call beyond the thought and logicbased realm within which we ordinarily experience reality to a deeper and more fundamental ground of being. Breaking down can indeed be a form of waking up. Dr Russell Razzaque is a psychiatrist with many years of experience in adult mental health and he currently works in the NHS in east London. Dr Razzaque's special interest and particular field of research is in mindfulness and the nexus between spirituality and psychology. He is the author of Breaking Down is Waking Up: Can Psychological Distress Be a Spiritual Gateway? russellrazzaque.com 7pm–8.30pm £15/£10 on door £12/£8 online
The only thing you ever have is now – Eckhart Tolle
CONVERSATIONS What would your advice be to anyone looking to follow a similar path? Find your community, seek out a writing partner or a production partner like I did, and make sure you're in a situation that is good for creativity so that the music has time to evolve at its own pace. I have to remember that I am a messenger and a lot of messages in the music are channelled so I have a duty to get out the way of the work. What are you most grateful for in your life? My relationships with those close to me, and my health.
Rumer is a singer and songwriter. What has been the biggest learning in your life? My biggest learning is around the many hiding places of the ego, and figuring out how to always stay ahead of the ego. What, as Oprah says, 'do you know for sure'? That there is such a thing as high vibration and low vibration in the atmosphere which dictates the outcome of any situation. Energy is all and everything but there are varying qualities of that energy and we have the power to shift that energy, and to raise or lower the vibration of energy around us with thought, word, and deed with immediate effect. When did you know you wanted to be a singer? I always wanted to be a singer and I wanted to be a singer songwriter when I was around 21. My biggest break was meeting my producer Steve, whose playfulness and openness allowed my first album to grow in its own time.
What makes you feel most alive? Nature. Breathing in the air on the first days if spring. I love trees. I ask trees for songs. In California, I lived in a trailer with a eucalyptus tree outside it and on the first day I prayed under the tree and ask it for a song. I wrote two really beautiful songs in that trailer which will be in my new album Into Colour. What inspired you to sing a song about P.F. Sloan? I just liked the song and I liked the idea of singing about an artist who was not recognized or appreciated as he should have been as I was pushing back against the notion of fame and the meaning of it all at the time. What does the word spirituality mean to you? All things unseen, mysterious, and everyone's individual relationship with God as they see it.
Rumer is singing with P.F. Sloan at St James’s Church on Monday 23 June
What has been your biggest learning in your life? The realization that the thoughts we are believing create all our suffering. Not just some of it, or most of it: all of it. What are you most grateful for in your life? Peace. Who has been your biggest teacher or inspiration? All are equal. People, cats, dogs, trees, ants, everything. What inspires you? Freedom can be found in the darkest of places. It’s breathtakingly beautiful to discover this. What are the most common challenges that the people you work with experience? Stillness.
Byron Katie is the founder of The Work, a simple yet powerful process of self inquiry. How did you come to be on your current path? After ten years of suffering and severe depression, one morning I woke up without identity. All the darkness was gone, and I began to laugh a kind of laughter I hadn’t experienced since I was a very young child. I realized in that moment that when I believed my thoughts I suffered, but when I didn’t believe my thoughts I didn’t suffer, and I have come to see that this is true for every human being. In that moment The Work was born. Anyone with an open mind can do The Work. If you identify and question your stressful thoughts, you can set yourself free. I love that.
What advice would you offer to our audience? To experience The Work for themselves. Suffering is optional. If you have any stress in your life, question your thoughts, and discover your truth–not my truth or anyone else’s, but yours, the truth that sets you free. What fills your heart with joy or makes you feel alive? This friendly universe and its perfect, flawless, immovable way. I love what is. Byron Katie is leading a seminar Who Would You Be Without Your Story? at Logan Hall on Saturday 5 July.

The Future of Wellbeing DEEPAK CHOPRA
The Science of Creating Heaven on Earth BRUCE LIPTON
Join Deepak Chopra for an inspirational day as he creates a roadmap for higher health based on the latest findings in both mainstream and alternative medicine. Are we in the midst of a major paradigm shift in science? Is the universe becoming self aware in the human nervous system? Is the next stage of human development conscious evolution? Can we develop a higher awareness of who we are, what we yearn for, and what we can ultimately do about it? How does our understanding of consciousness also enhance our capacity for total wellbeing? Deepak will address all these questions as well as practical ways to experience higher consciousness, transformation and healing.
A renaissance in science is shattering old myths and rewriting the story of life. Bruce Lipton today introduces a “new” biology that illuminates the science of mind-body medicine. The profound insights offered by leading edge research completely revise our understanding of the nature of life. The new science of how consciousness interfaces biology reveals how our thoughts, attitudes and beliefs create the conditions of our body and our place in the world. Understanding how our developmental programming shapes the unconscious behaviours that create or undermine our wishes, desires and loving partnerships, is fundamental for acquiring self-empowerment and becoming the master of your fate rather than the ‘victim’ of your programs.
Deepak Chopra is the author of more than seventy books translated into over eighty-five languages. Time magazine has described Dr Chopra as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century and credits him as ‘the poet-prophet of alternative medicine’. deepakchopra.com 11am–5pm Doors open 9.30am Premiere Circle & Front Stalls are SOLD OUT Standard £85, Concessions £65 Seats are numbered and will be allocated according to the date of booking. Who Would You Be Without Your Story? BYRON KATIE The Work of Byron Katie has been called the most powerful self-realisation technique ever developed. Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now, says, “The Work is like a razor-sharp sword that cuts through illusion and enables you to know for yourself the timeless essence of your being.” The Work is a revolutionary way to deal with the thoughts that keep you from living in peace and joy. It involves asking four simple questions that can transform how you experience problems. In this seminar, Katie, with her humour and lovingly incisive clarity, will introduce you to The Work and show you how self-inquiry can bring you a joy-filled life. She will invite several participants to work with her onstage and will take questions from the audience. Byron Katie has worked with millions of people all over the world who report profound experiences and lasting transformations. “Katie’s events are riveting to watch,” The Times has reported. The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It is a way to understand what is hurting you, and to address your problems with clarity. Byron Katie has one job: to teach people how to stop suffering. In 1986, at the bottom of a ten-year fall into depression, anger, and addiction, she woke up one morning and realised that all suffering comes from believing our thoughts. She realised that when she believed her stressful thoughts, she suffered, but that when she questioned them, she didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Her simple but powerful method of inquiry is called The Work. Katie has worked with millions of people round the world who report profound experiences and lasting transformations. Her books include Loving What Is, I Need Your Love: Is That True? and A Thousand Names for Joy. thework.com 10am–5.30pm £75/£55 Good Friends & Concs Logan Hall, Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, WC1H 0AL I am a lover of what is, not because I'm a spiritual person, but because it hurts when I argue with reality – Byron Katie

Time, Life and the Human Cycles MICHAEL ROADS
Wisdom of the Dervishes SHEIKH BURHANUDDIN HERRMAN
Many people look at life on the basis of days and years; indeed, this is how many people live it, physically, for a very short-term perspective. What if you were able to develop and expand your relationship with life and self and significantly reduce the amount of worry, fear and emotional stress you experience in life. Over the course of the day Michael Roads will delve into the concept that we are immortal souls in an endlessly evolving infinity, not beings of a single lifetime, but of eternity, so much more than a body and personality. And how living from this truth, living from the soul/heart of our eternal greatness rather than our perceived smallness, will dramatically change your life. Get ready for a magical day of exploration, learning and deep discussion about our greater reality, unconditional love as the power of creation and how to move beyond illusion and live from our divine nature in a way that uplifts, refines and fulfills.
Sufism is an ancient radical lifestyle based on love, knowledge and wisdom, transcending all religion. In this workshop, through traditional, yet contemporary, Sufi practices such as singing and chanting, Sheikh Burhanuddin will lead an authentic sharing experience, designed to open your heart to the mysticism and beauty of life. Known for his magical mix of humour, light heartedness and dynamic interaction, participants will be guided to recognise themselves beyond their conditioning, the veil of illusion that tells them that they are separate from the Whole, from God. Join Sheikh Burhanuddin as his inspired teachings, singing, storytelling and traditional Sufi wisdom will infuse divine love into your heart allowing you to simply be, beyond personality constraint.
Michael Roads discovered at an early age he had the natural ability to communicate with nature and go beyond linear time and space. After becoming spiritually awakened in 1986, he became passionate about sharing his clear metaphysical insights and unique, experiential truth. He is the author of 14 books, translated into 16 languages. michaelroads.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£50 Concs Heythrop College, 23 Kensington Square, W8 5HN

The 7 Nutritional Secrets Every Woman Should Know MARILYN GLENVILLE
You Can Heal Your Heart DAVID KESSLER
Imagine what it would be like to feel healthy and well, 100% of the time? Are you fed up with tiredness, headaches, mood swings, aching joints, cravings, anxiety, tension, irritability, digestive problems and weight gain? The majority of female health problems are triggered by the same mechanisms, including stress, hormone imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and toxins. In this workshop you will learn to: * How to have a cool and comfortable menopause; * How to prevent osteoporosis – the “silent killer”; * How to lose weight – naturally; * How to slow down the clock to look and feel younger for longer; * Prevent major health problems including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and cancer; * How to reduce your risk of breast cancer and help to prevent it recurring if you’ve already had it. Marilyn Glenville PhD is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine, a chartered psychologist, author and broadcaster. She has studied and practised nutrition for over 25 years and is the author of several books. marilynglenville.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£50 Concs Heythrop College, 23 Kensington Square, W8
Following on from his talk and expanding on the exercises found in David and Louise Hay’s book “You Can Heal Your Heart” as well his work with Elisabeth Kübler Ross, this workshop will focus on ways to fully feel the loss, but not get stuck in the suffering. Challenging our thinking patterns and behaviours around grief and loss, David will expand on how he believes that the internal work of grief is a process, a journey. It does not end on a certain day or date. It is as individual as each of us. He will look at why the pain of loss is so intense, so heart breaking, and how grief is the reflection of a deep loving connection with another human being, event, or situation that has been lost. By discussing how we view old wounds, approach loss in general, whether a loved one, job, or way of being and examine the lies we sometimes tell ourselves, David will share ways you can turn loss around heal yourself and potentially find happiness and peace again. David Kessler is one of the most well-known experts on grief and loss. He co-authored two books with the legendary Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, On Grief and Grieving and Life Lessons. His first book, The Needs of the Dying, received praise by Mother Teresa and his latest book You Can Heal Your Heart was co-authored with Louise Hay. grief.com 10.30am–5.30pm £65/£55 Good Friends/£50 Concs Colet House, 151 Talgarth Rd, W14 9DA
