EDITOR’S LETTER 2017 will be different. It will be the year that we will better ourselves, and become an oasis of peace and love for everyone who comes in contact with us. This will be the year where we let go of the hurt, the self doubt, and the excuses. We will try new things without hesitation, and see the beauty of the world in a new light. Many of us extend ourselves to others, without first taking care of ourselves. Remember, it is impossible to pour from an empty cup. It is okay to take time alone, drink some tea and meditate on loving kindness. It is encouraged. In the death of 2016, we find the rebirth of ourselves. Dwelling on the past is one of my biggest struggles, I am constantly thinking of how things should have gone, instead of how they went. We can’t change the past, we can only take a lesson from each experience, and leave the rest behind. This year, ALT HAUS will be introducing new contributors, editors, and segments. We decided on REBIRTH for our January Issue, and received some incredible contributions that we are very excited to show you.

Behind the Lens: Sean Mundy
Sean Mundy is a 22-year-old artist and photographer based in Canada, creating stunning, conceptual images. His work has been used as album artwork for Birds of Tokyo, and recently displayed in a solo gallery in Montreal. Each image has an aura of intimacy, and mystery, each without explanation, leaving the interpretation up to the viewer. Sean also released an EP: MOADS in 2015, a few selected songs are featured in this month’s REBIRTH Playlist. We recently spoke to him about his inspiration, method and background. *** ALT HAUS: Where is home for you? Sean Mundy: Home for me is Montreal. I grew up there and have lived there my whole life. AH: What is your artistic background? SM: I’m pretty much self taught. I enrolled in a commercial photography program for a year but dropped out, I felt like my time would be better devoted to doing personal projects than doing assignments that I didn’t really want to do. AH: What mediums do you use? SM: I’m exclusively shooting digital images, and depending on the image or series I sometimes use Photoshop pretty extensively on my images.
AH: What do you hope to communicate with your art? SM: Each image or series is different from the rest, so I don’t think I have an overarching “message” that I purposely aim to convey to viewers throughout my entire practice. AH: What does being creative mean to you? What inspires you to be creative? SM: Being creative is just finding or creating solutions to problems, regardless if they’re artistic in nature or not. Problems that I face would be along the lines of “how do I do x for this photo” I find success stories and learning about other photographers and artists often inspires me to want to do more and be more creative; I love seeing how dedicated others are to bettering themselves or being the best in their respective field. AH: What would you consider your most personal work of art? SM: Probably “Sigil”, as it’s an image that really just “clicked” after shooting it, and helped me understand what direction I wanted to go with images afterwards. I often think photos will be great before actually shooting them but sometimes they don’t work out as I thought they would, but the final product of Sigil is pretty much exactly how I wanted it to be, so it’s a special image for me.
AH: What themes do you pursue? SM: It really depends on the image, but I typically find myself using themes of identity, individualism vs. collectivism, and religion in my work. Many of my images are created purely for the visual elements in the image, however.

AH: What has been your greatest accomplishment in regards to your art? SM: Being able to create images for bands and actually own the final product is a pretty great accomplishment for me as it’s a mix of the two things that I love. I had my first solo show at a really nice gallery here in Montreal earlier this year as well; dipping my toes into the art world via galleries is something that I had always wanted to do and being able to do so this year was great. AH: What is your dream project? SM: To be paid to create a large series of photos, or to be paid to write, produce, and record an album of music. I’m looking to work on my own projects before working with other people at the moment, really. If I really had to collaborate with someone I would want to work with Nicolas Alan Cope though, he’s definitely one of my favourite photographers/artists.
AH: You also released an EP (MOADS) in 2015, what was the inspiration behind it? SM: I’d been listening to a lot of rap and hip-hop at the time, groups like Flatbush Zombies, The Underachievers, and Mick Jenkins to name a few, and had been writing music on and off for a few years with little direction and felt like putting out an actual body of work. I don’t rap, and am much more comfortable writing instrumental music, so I wrote some instrumental beats in varying styles for someone to potentially do vocals on top of.
AH: What can we expect to see from Sean Mundy in the future? SM: I have a lot of ideas for images that I’ve yet to figure out how to shoot, some of which are my best ideas to be honest, so that’s something I’m looking forward to shooting and releasing. I’ve also been working on a music project again that I will be looking to take much more seriously than I have been previously with music, which should be dropping early 2017.
AH: Do you feel a sense of liberation when you create? SM: I wouldn’t consider it a sense of liberation, more of a sense of ease and excitement at the same time. Shooting can be stressful of course depending on the extent that I’m going to get a particular image, but knowing that I could possibly be shooting one of my best images is a great feeling, and sometimes simple images end up being better than you originally thought, so it can come at surprising times.

Dawn filters through the window Silence reigns for this moment Chaos and pain rest for now You grip your heart and hold on tight Darkness will come again but Morning brings relief, a measure of peace You want to wash away the night but How do you wash your soul? Shadows wait, but you grasp the light And bleed out death There is more than this Someday, Someday, Perhaps this will end? - Ann Finch, a survivor
