Hearing loss and diabetes.
DID YOU KNOW... …that hearing loss is more prevalent in people with diabetes? In fact, 21% of diabetics have hearing loss compared to 9% of non-diabetics1. Another significant study that examined hearing data from participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2004 showed that of the more than 5,000 individuals who took part, hearing loss appeared in 15% of those without diabetes and more than 30% in those diagnosed with diabetes2. The research team’s report concluded that screening for hearing loss would allow for early medical intervention that could improve hearing for adults with diabetes. Since hearing loss is a potential complication among those diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to get your hearing checked at least once a year. The earlier hearing loss is diagnosed, the more effective treatment options, such as hearing aids, are likely to be. And, hearing aids can prevent cognitive decline, injury-causing falls, and even the early onset of dementia.
For a limited time, Gilliam Hearing Center is offering a FREE Hearing Screening. Call (908) 832-4327 to schedule your appointment. Appointments are limited. At Gilliam Hearing Center we care about your hearing. That’s why there is no obligation to purchase anything. Call for your FREE hearing screening and bring a loved one with you. From the Publisher Becoming an adult is something every high school senior looks forward to. In the past, high school graduation tended to make young people feel like they have “graduated” from childhood to adulthood. Now, that is not necessarily true. Turning 18 may legally consider you an adult, but that doesn’t mean that young people now feel like they are. I can remember graduation day and the feeling that I had made it! Boy was I mistaken. I wish I could go back to carefree days, spending my time at school, studying, and then twirling the afternoon away. For today’s graduates, the push for college, the decline in birth rates for people ages 15-24, and the putting off of traditional milestones like home ownership, marriage, and having children has made adulthood become something that happens anywhere from ages 25-30. Of course, I would have to say that some people never become adults! LOL The high school seniors in this month’s magazine are a wonderful group of young people headed toward life. They will make their mark and 08 ALT Magazine | April 2019
reach adulthood at some point – some before others. We wish them the best of luck. Hard word, combined with customer service and yes, a little bit of luck, has impacted the success of Family Eye Care Clinic in Atlanta. Their level of customer service is above any I have experienced. I recently began going to Dr. Adam Cox for my eye care. From the moment you walk in to the office, until you step back outside, you know that they are there to make sure you receive the best possible care. In fact, when I first arrived at the office, I had no idea what a huge business it was! I was impressed that every person there was helpful and friendly. Don’t we wish all our visits with businesses throughout the area could be the same? I am thrilled with my choice! I hope you will take the time to learn about Family Eye Care Clinic, and read about the amazing high school students that we have highlighted. They are going to change the world – one person at a time. May God bless you and yours…

When people think about quality health care, they normally think about what larger cities can offer them. However, people are traveling from all over the area to Atlanta, Texas, a small town 20 minutes south of Texarkana, in order to go to Family Eye Care Clinic. Locally owned and operated, the clinic hosts four doctors, each with their own strengths and expertise: Dr. Randal Cox, Dr. Terry Foster, Dr. Adam Cox, and Dr. Blake Williams. Dr. Randal Cox started the clinic in 1980 after he graduated from optometry school. “I knew in high school I wanted to be in health care. I was very interested in math and science, and optometry involves both. It was a perfect fit,” Dr. Randal Cox says. “Now, I believe God was directing me without me knowing. I didn’t become a strong Christian until the end of my optometry school years.” As Dr. Randal Cox and his wife were trying 010 ALT Magazine | April 2019
to decide where to live and start a practice, Randal did a market survey on every town in Northeast Texas, and Atlanta was last on the list for opportunity. However, since both Randal and his wife were from Atlanta, and loved the people and the town, they did not really want to live anywhere else. Their gamble turned out to be one of the best decisions of their lives. “We really love living in Atlanta, and we’ve been able to grow every year. I started out sharing an office with a local dentist and had no staff. We now have a 9,000 square foot clinic with four doctors and 23 staff,” Dr. Randal Cox says. “We’ve tried to model our practice after the best clinics in Dallas and Houston. I wanted to bring ‘big city’ eye care to my patients that I cared for. That has made all the difference. We attract most of our patients from larger surrounding cities, with a large percent of our patients come from Texarkana. We have become a regional eye care facility
serving the people of Northeast Texas, Northwest Louisiana and Southwest Arkansas. For me personally, Family Eye Care Clinic holds a special place in my heart. For as long as I can remember, my parents have taken to me to the clinic for my annual eye exam with Dr. Randal Cox. It was the place I picked out my first clear framed glasses with pride, the place I fearfully tried contacts for the first time, and the place that I return to each year, even though I am a longtime resident of Texarkana. Now, seeing Dr. Cox feels like seeing an old friend. Every year something in our lives change. I tell him about my daughter, and I ask when I should bring her for her first exam. He updates me on his son, Adam Cox, who graduated a few years after me in high school and is now working with his father at the clinic. Over the years, the building has changed and grown. I hardly recognized it the last time I visited. The doctors at the clinic continue to adapt to new technologies and services for their patients, and as they add both space and doctors, the building reflects their desire to offer more eye wear, more technology, more services, more tests, more opportunities for patients to get help with any and all ocular problems they may be facing. Even as they expand, I know what to expect when I walk in the door. The staff and doctors treat me like I am welcome, and I feel like I can relax because I know I will get the best treatment possible. I know I will continue the family tradition when it is time to take my daughter to her first exam. Making the trip down to Atlanta is worth every
minute knowing that the doctors and staff will advocate for my family and our health. Dr. Randal Cox says that all the doctors that have come into the practice have been an answer to prayer. As the team looks to hire new staff, they have several criteria they are searching for. “First and foremost we would look for doctors who share our Christian faith. We all believe that God has us here for a reason and that He is a partner in our practice. This helps our doctors have a caring attitude – another requirement,” Dr. Randal Cox says. “Plus, all of our doctors had great success in their academic years, both undergraduate and Optometry School. We feel that if you don’t care enough about making great grades, you won’t care enough to provide great eye care. Our doctors are also passionate about providing the most state of the art eye care with cutting edge technology.” Dr. Terry Foster joined the clinic in 1994. He and Randal were acquainted prior to his entering optometry school. “We are both driven to succeed and practice our profession at the highest level and broadest scope possible,” Dr. Terry Foster says. “It made sense that we would join forces to push each other and attain our goals.” Then, in 2012, Dr. Randal Cox’s son, Adam Cox, joined the clinic. Adam decided to pursue a career in optometry while attending Baylor University. He had always had an interest in health care, but he also wanted to work in ALT-Mag.com | April 2019 011
a rural setting. “I decided a career in private practice optometry would let me live anywhere I wanted while providing local eye care. My father was always encouraging me to find my own path and never pushed optometry. That helped me become very comfortable with deciding to pursue Optometry as that was the career I had chosen,” Dr. Adam Cox says. “My father became a great resource after I entered optometry school, and I enjoy ‘talking shop’ with him to this day.” Adam believes that one of the biggest strengths of the clinic is the doctors' and staff’s desire to solve any issue. They welcome challenges, and they want their patients to leave with the relief they have been hoping to find. Adam says that most likely they probably already have experience treating patients with similar

eye issues. If they cannot resolve your issue or you need invasive surgery, they have a referral network of sub-specialist that all treat different eye issues and disease, and they are going to send you to a sub-specialist that they have full confidence in and have personally worked with. “We want all the citizens of the Ark-La-Tex to know that Family Eye Care Clinic is in Atlanta, Texas, for them,” Adam says. “Part of our mission statement is ‘We believe that our patients are our friends and that our relationship can last a lifetime.’ The doctors at Family Eye Care Clinic strive to live this every day and are willing to go above and beyond for the good of our patients.” Dr. Blake Williams is the latest edition to the roster of doctors at Family Eye Care Clinic. He joined the team this past February. “There were several factors that lead me to partner with the team at Family Eye Care Clinic with the first being their attention to servant leadership. The team at FECC has truly embraced this mindset down to a core, and it is more than obvious from the moment a patient walks through the front door,” Dr. Blake Williams says. “Our mission and focus is patient first where our priority is to address the needs and concerns of the patient. We pride ourselves on big-city technology with a small town feel where everyone always has a face with a name. Another motive for joining the team at FECC was their commitment to cutting edge medical technology and educational growth.” Though Dr. Randal Cox does not plan on retiring anytime soon, he feels like his dreams for the clinic are in great hands with the doctors at FECC. For him, what sets the clinic apart from others is not only the familylike atmosphere and caring staff they provide, but also the comprehensive lists of services and specialized eye care they can offer their patrons. The doctors are all certified Therapeutic Optometrists and Optometric Glaucoma Specialists. They
they are proud of the services, testing and manage macular degeneration and diabetic care they offer to clients in this area. “‘Not all related eye conditions. They also treat other eye exams are the same. The difference is in the conditions such as infections, allergies, dry eye, thoroughness,’” Dr. Terry Foster says. “Much injuries and foreign body removals. of our quality of life depends on how well Dr. Adam Cox and Dr. Blake Williams are we are able to see and visually interact with also certified to do laser surgery for glaucoma our world. 1. What are your biggest tips for eye health? “Make sure you get a regular thorough eye exam every year from a professional optometrist. So many sight threatening diseases can be detected early before they cause symptoms and be prevented from causing problems.” 2. How did it feel adding your son to the staff at Family Eye Care Clinic? “Having my son join our practice has been another way God has blessed our practice. It is a true blessing to get to work with him but more importantly his expertise and his caring ways have helped our practice tremendously. I love hearing from people how much he has helped them and how they love him. And the kids think he is ‘really cool.’ You definitely could say I’m a ‘proud Papa!’” 3. What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is taking care of my patients. It’s not just that I treat my patients like a friend – my patients are my friends. And at Family Eye Care Clinic we feel that relationship can last a lifetime. Every day that I go to work I know that I’m going to help people see better or help preserve the vision they have. That is very rewarding. I feel doctors can be an answer to prayer and it’s great to be used that way. 4. What do you want customers and community members to know about Family Eye Care Clinic? “I want them to know our mission statement. I will put it here. It is the mission of Family Eye Care Clinic to be dedicated to serving our patients with the highest quality of vision care. Our aim is to treat our patients with sincere respect, courtesy, and fairness. We believe that our patients are our friends and that our relationships can last a lifetime. Our goal is to earn our patient’s trust and loyalty, and to maximize the quality of their lives by our commitment to their complete vision wellness. We will strive to exceed our patient’s expectations and help each patient understand all aspects of their eye health care. This practice will stay on the cutting edge of technology with the latest instrumentation and continuing education for our doctors and staff.” 5. What else sets Family Eye Care Clinic apart from other clinics in the area? “Another great strength of our practice is our staff. They are a group of professionals with good hearts and caring attitudes. They are very good at what they do and it is a joy to work with them. My patients tell me all the time how friendly and caring the staff are and that is music to my ears.”

1. Why did you decide to pursue a career in optometry? “Optometry is a challenging and stimulating career centered around patient care and improving their visual quality of life. Eye doctors are afforded the opportunity to interact with a wide range of people from all ages and walk of life on a daily basis.” 2. What are your biggest tips for eye health? “The most important tip for ensuring eye health is to schedule regular comprehensive eye exams to keep the visual system in top working order. Beyond that, what is good for the body is typically good for the eyes as well: eat a healthy diet with foods rich in antioxidants, exercise, don’t smoke, wear protective eyeglasses.” 3. What is the best part of your job? How has this career changed you? “The grandest reward for our job is knowing with no doubt that every day will yield multiple opportunities to improve our patients’ quality of life. Loving and helping your neighbor is a life well lived!” 4. What do you hope customers and community members know about Family Eye Care? “While our clinic is one of the largest and most highly successful eye health facilities, it is still very friendly, accommodating, and family oriented. We offer highly specialized eye care for our patients including comprehensive eye health evaluations; dry eye disease treatment; management, treatment and diagnosis of ocular disease such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal disease and detachment; eye emergencies such as foreign body removal, injury and infections; LASIK and refractive surgery pre and post op management; depth perception and binocular anomalies; complex contact lens fitting for Keratoconus; complete eye strain technology; sports specialty eye wear fitting.” 5. What do you think the greatest strengths of Family Eye Care Clinic? “The extensive amount of technology and instrumentation we have in our office to provide the most advanced eye care possible is what sets us apart. Our Clinic boasts the most advanced and extensive collection of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment available to allow our four doctors and 23 staff members to practice eye care to its broadest scope all in a modern and comfortable facility. We offer corneal mapping, optical coherence scans, visual field testing, full field retinal camera, Electrodiagnostic (ERG/VEP), automatic digital refractors/phoropters, spectral microscope/cellular photography, real time digital photography and the ability to show it to our patients, biomicroscopy and photography, and ADX with dark adaptation. We offer more services and specialized care than most offices in the Ark-La-Tex.

1. At what age should children start getting eye exams? “I see a very large number of children as my patients. I enjoy seeing kids and helping them have the best experience possible at the eye doctor. I am comfortable seeing a child at any age including newborn. The American Optometric Association recommends all children have a comprehensive eye exam with an Optometrist by age three and then another comprehensive exam before starting kindergarten. Parents should remember that my young patients do not have to know their letters or be able to provide accurate responses to questions because I can determine if a child needs glasses or has any eye health issues without them doing anything besides looking at some fun pictures.” 2. What are your greatest tips for eye health? “The eye is an extremely complex organ that needs lots of tender loving care. Everyone’s eyelids and eyelashes should be cleaned as often as we brush our teeth. The surface of the eye should be properly lubricated to ensure clear vision and comfortable eyes. Our eyes should always be protected by safety glasses. Most eye disease goes unnoticed by patients until extensive damage has occurred. I cannot stress enough the importance of getting a comprehensive eye exam once a year. A healthy diet is also very beneficial to our eye health. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale, fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C, and cold water fish such as salmon and cod are excellent sources of nutrients for the eyes.” 3. What sets Family Eye Care Clinic apart from other clinics? “One way our clinic is set apart from many others is the amount of knowledge our doctors have obtained and regularly share with each other. Our doctors have a combined 80 years of experience in eye care. I have benefited greatly from the two senior optometrist that I have gotten to work with since 2012. We routinely have discussions regarding patient experiences and how to improve treatment plans and outcomes. We pride ourselves in obtaining the best continuing education available each year and obtaining many more than the required hours. We enjoy challenging eye issues and get greater joy from our patients after we treat and resolve their eye issues.” 4. What should a patient do when they are experiencing eye problems? “We pride ourselves with the amount of eye disease we see and the success we have treating it. We want the complex patient to call our office for an appointment. We are ready to jump at the challenge of resolving an eye issue someone has struggled with for years and can find no relief. We constantly educate ourselves and our staff on new treatments for different conditions. We want to provide complete eye care for our patients. If your eyes don’t seem clear or feel right, we would love to find out why and provide a treatment plan that works. We expect better than ‘I can see OK’ or ‘My eyes feel OK.’ There may be some underlying problems that can be addressed and improved. We are the eye doctors that look close enough and spend enough time with our patients to figure it out.” 5. What do you love about your job? “I really love practicing optometry. I particularly love practicing optometry in rural Northeast Texas. I get to diagnose and treat every eye disease out there and as I learned in optometry school, ‘It’s not rare if it’s in your chair.’ I enjoy serving my hometown and providing the Ark-La-Tex
with better eye care than they can get in Dallas or Houston. I have further benefited from being close to Shreveport as I perform ophthalmic surgical procedures at Willis Knighton Eye Institute twice a month. I have performed over 700 procedures during the past 3 years. I am able to help my patients better manage their glaucoma after a low risk laser procedure and help my patients see better by providing non-invasive surgical relief of their secondary cataracts.” 6. What are your future plans for the clinic? Our future plans for Family Eye Care Clinic are to provide modern technology with old fashioned caring. We plan to continue to have the most advanced technology available in eye care. We stay on the cutting edge of vision and eye health management and treatment. We have and will continue to bring in instruments that let us obtain the most accurate glasses prescription available. We have and will continue to provide the most comfortable contact lenses for our patient’s eyes no matter their prescription needs. We have and will continue to have the most advanced and numerous instrumentation in the Ark-La-Tex to detect and monitor eye disease progression. If there is a new instrument that comes to market that allows the doctors at Family Eye Care Clinic to detect eye disease at an earlier stage, we have it or will get it. We are serious when we say we are and plan to continue to be the best optometry practice in Texas. We like to practice what we preach so drive down to Atlanta and let us take care of all your eye care needs in a friendly, clean environment.”

1. What do you like the most about your job? Pursuing a career in medical optometry has allowed me to make a difference by positively impacting patients’ lives, and there is no greater joy in life than giving the gift of sight. Optometrists are the primary eye care providers in the United States and perform 85% of all comprehensive eye exams. We are licensed to examine, diagnose, treat and manage disorders of the eye along with the ability to diagnose related systemic conditions. It is the 8 years of graduate and doctorate training in eye pathology and systemic disease that has allowed our profession to separate itself from other specialists in the medical field. Secondary to our position, optometrists serve as the primary gatekeeper in eye care and are able to diagnose systemic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disease, multiple sclerosis and cancer while the patient is still asymptomatic. Intervening and treating these conditions allows for improved disease prognosis and halts the potential for comorbidities, which in turn leads to longer healthier lives for our patients. 2. What are some of your biggest eye health tips? “It has been predicted that 38 million Americans will experience blindness, low vision or an age–related eye disease in their lifetime, and by 2050 the number of agerelated macular degeneration cases will increase to 17.8 million Americans. Additionally with the growing age of baby boomers, it is estimated the number of cataracts will increase by 30 million over the next decade. With all this being said, it has always been a priority to educate patients on the different options to potentially slow the progression of these eye conditions, by catching the disease early through diagnostics and providing supplemental nutrition and therapy to slow the progression. The type of diagnostics that we are able to provide patients can typically only be found in large metropolitan areas or university based hospitals, and being a small town practice, we are able to provide each patient additional patient to doctor chair time when compared to our fellow colleagues. The last thing a patient should ever feel is rushed, especially when it comes to their eyes, and we always make it a focus to provide our full and undivided attention to each and every one of our patients.” 3. What are some of the newest issues in optometry and how do you plan to address those with patients? “A hot topic that has surfaced through multiple media sources over the last few years involves the effects of blue light or high energy blue light (HEV) on the visual system. Blue light has been around since the beginning of
016 ALT Magazine | April 2019
time, as the sun is a major contributor, but the scientific community has started to research what happens when our visual system is inundated with an excessive of this particular wavelength of light and the results are eye opening, pun intended. Three things that we know to date is that too much blue light can disrupt our sleep patterns, affect our ocular health and also affect our medical health, but there are significant unintended consequences that we don’t fully understand regarding blue light exposure. As eye doctors at FECC we can provide patients with the proper education on diet, supplementation, and most importantly medically advanced eye glasses technology that can refract the harmful effects that are associated with blue light exposure. Surveys show that 60% of Americans spend approximately 6 hours a day in front of digital devices and approximately 85% of youth spend over 4 hours a day with digital devices. “ 4. What do you wish patients and citizens knew about Family Eye Care Clinic? “The team at FECC has always valued experience when it comes to our craft, but more importantly we hire and surround ourselves with a team of individuals that demonstrate high integrity and character with a family first mentality.”

Clorissa has been a member of the LibertyEylau band since sixth grade. She plays four different types of clarinet: B flat, Alto, Bass, and Contra Bass. This year, she was the assistant drum major. “I was honored to be one of the assistant drum majors that helped lead the Liberty-Eylau marching band to Area finalist, their

If Clorissa could create a mandatory class for high school seniors, she would create an entrepreneur class, and her favorite teacher is Mr. Bimal Ghimire. “Not only was he a strict, yet understanding teacher/professor, but he was also fun and truly cared,” Clorissa says. “He did this all while keeping a beneficial learning environment.” Clorissa describes herself as “empathetic, outlandish, and daring,” and her most valuable lesson so far is that an opportunity may only come once.
Clorissa’s love for animals has inspired her future goals. She plans on attending the University of Missouri in Columbia to obtain her doctorate of veterinary medicine while being a part of the marching band. Her most valued role model is Dr. James Moore, a veterinarian doctor who she has been shadowing. “Throughout his life, through ups, downs, and with ill health, he still gives his all to help the animals that he cares for,” Clorissa says. “If I had $50,000 to give to a charity, it would be an animal care charity, because humans have more control over animals’ individual lives. I would want to help as much as I possibly could.
1. What material possession can you not live without? “Books.” 2. If you could meet anyone in the world (living or not) who would it be and what would you say to them? “I would meet Steve Irwin and thank him for being a major impact on human lives with animals.” 3. This became the new hangout stop for my two best friends, Becky Beckham and Jonathan Hawkins, and I.” 4. What makes you unique and special? “Knowing that no matter what someone else says or thinks, it does not change who I truly am.” 5. extremely involved in extracurricular activities. She is a part of the Harold Ross Perot STEM Academy, National Honor Society, Secretary of the Texas High AP Ambassador’s Club, Gifted and Talented, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Texas High Tiger Band, Texas High Color Guard, Rosebuds Garden Club, Girl Scouts, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority ASCEND program, and president of the Chic-Fil-A DREAM Leadership Academy. She was selected as one of the superintendent’s “Leader in Me” Award, and won an Academic Band Achievement Award. She was also selected to participate in a U.S. Navy Band performance, and selected for the Four States Bandmasters Association and a 2018 Las Amigas Debutante. If she could create a mandatory class for future seniors, she sees the benefit of having a course that teaches students how to understand and establish a line of credit. Chloe’s favorite teacher in school was Mrs. Jenny Walker, her eleventh grade REACH teacher. “She taught me that nothing was impossible and to always chase my dreams,” Chloe says. “She also taught me to let nothing get in my way from reaching the top to be successful.” If Chloe had $50,000 to donate to a charity, she would donate it to Harvest Regional Food Bank in Texarkana. “I believe that the best place to start helping people in need should start
within your local community,” Chloe says. “My secret wish is to one day have the chance to give back not just to my community, but also to surrounding communities.” When Chloe does have time to relax, she loves to listen to calming music like oldies and R&B or soul. She also enjoys going to church, volunteering in the community, shopping, and doing makeup. Chloe’s biggest accomplishment so far is graduating from Texas High with her associate’s degree. “I have been selected to a numerous amount of universities as well as receiving a substantial amount of academic scholarships, and I will major in Kinesiology with a focus in PrePhysical Therapy,” Chloe says. “I strive to not let any obstacles hinder me from achieving any of the goals that I’ve set for myself.”
1. Who is your most valued role model and why? “Janelle Monae because she has always taught young girls of color not to be afraid to go out in society and be a go-getter. She also shows that you have a chance to be something in this world no matter what category society tries to place you in.” 2. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned? “In life, not everyone is going to have the same visions and goals set for themselves that you do.” 3. Describe your senior year in three words. “Practice. Studying. Naps.” 4. What is your most unexpected moment? “When I received the Miss Congeniality award in a three-way tie at my Debutante Ball.” 5. What is your funniest moment? “When my chair decided to break in half during class, and I screamed as I was falling. Everyone turned and looked at me and laughed. Initially it wasn’t funny, but now it is when I think back.”

At Fouke, Trent plays basketball, runs track, and is involved in FCCLA and NHS. His biggest accomplishment so far is when he was named All Conference in basketball his junior year. If Trent could meet anyone in the world, he would choose to meet Steve Nash. “I would probably be speechless because he is the reason I love basketball,” Trent says. To relax, Trent shoots free throws for hours. His funniest moment was laughing with the team at the basketball Christmas party. “And we really had no idea what we were laughing at,” Trent says. The three words that Trent would use to describe himself are “strong-minded, care-free, and big-hearted.” His desire to help others extends to both his family and friends. If he was given $50,000 to donate to a charity, he would choose one that would benefit his sister. “I would donate to the Cerebral Palsey Foundation. My sister was born with Cerebral Palsey,” Trent says. “I would give to this charity for her, and I hope that one day they will find a cure so she and others can walk again.”
Trent says his senior year has been “a great experience.” If he could create a mandatory class for seniors, it would be a class to help them prepare for taxes, budgeting, and saving, and his favorite teacher is Mrs. Kim Jones. “She is someone who you can always talk to and confide in about anything,” Trent says. “She is very patient and understanding. And so much fun and makes learning great!” After graduation, Trent will attend Southern Arkansas University and will major in education and coaching.

have supported me in all I do, and they are willing to talk to me when I need a shoulder to cry on.” When Shelbi graduates, she plans on majoring in music education and minoring in mathematics at Southern Arkansas University. When she finishes school, she hopes to direct a small school band in the four states area.

Drug Take Back Initiative Operation Medicine Cabinet
The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department is proud to partner with Texarkana Emergency Center in an effort to remove unused and out of date prescription medicines from your homes. •It is important to know that law enforcement is only interested in the removal of unused and/or outdated medications from the homes of our citizens. •It matters not whose name is on the prescription, by whom it was prescribed, where it was prescribed, or where you reside. •We stress that it makes no difference if you live in Texas or Arkansas. •We take back all medications, no questions asked. You can remove the label if you desire but it’s not necessary. •We ask that you do not deposit needles (sharps), inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, liquids, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, or thermometers.
One box has been placed behind the Bi State Justice Building at 100 N. State Line Ave., Texarkana, Arkansas and another outside the Texarkana Emergency Center, 4646 Cowhorn Creek Rd., Texarkana, Texas. These boxes are regularly checked and the contents are immediately packaged for destruction. If you would like to personally drop your medications off to law enforcement, you can at the Miller County Sheriff ’s Office on East Street and Bi State Justice Building in Texarkana.

Congratulations to Esther Pippins!
A&M - Texarkana BAAS Graduate Accepted to Prestigious PhD Program by Dr. Lisa Myers, Director of BAAS Programs
In the spring of 2014, two young students brought their mother to my office in hopes of convincing their mom to go back to school. Their pleas urged her to action with, “Mom, you can do this. You’re so smart! You really need to do this.” The mom obviously wanted to please her daughters. The love she held for them was obvious in her smile. Still, there was hesitancy in the woman’s response. She was unsure if her time for school had passed 052 ALT Magazine | April 2019
her by. Maybe she could have done it in her younger years, but now? The woman’s daughters were doing such an excellent job encouraging their mom that I felt I needed to stay out of the conversation and let them work their magic! However, I knew I needed to add something – some advice from one mother to another, one older person to another – so I did. “You know, there’s no expiration date on learning.”
That is all I said, but the woman’s posture changed, her head tilted to the side, and I knew she’d made her decision. That was the day I met Esther Pippins. Five years later, Esther not only holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences, but she has also earned two master’s degrees: a Master of Science in Adult and Higher Education and a Master of Arts in English. While that is quite impressive, what I admire most about Esther is that she earned her degrees for a purpose. At no time have I sensed Esther was seeking degrees to feel smarter or to impress others with her intelligence. No, her aim was to learn, and the degrees were really more of a byproduct of that learning.
and Community Education at Texas State University (TSU). In addition, TSU awarded her the Texas State Merit Fellowship, which is an award the institution only considers bestowing on the top two applicants to the program. They chose Esther after meeting with her and recognizing the excellence we’ve all come to know at A&M-Texarkana. If anyone deserves this honor, it is Esther Pippins. Esther will be moving to San Marcos, Texas, this fall, and while we will certainly miss her, we could not be more proud for her as she takes the next step in her learning journey. Thank you, Esther, for letting us be part of that incredible journey.
Because Esther holds such reverence for learning, she hasn’t posted her degrees simply for the admiring eye. She’s used her learning and her role as Instructor and Adult Learning Facilitator to support other post-traditional students who come into the BAAS program looking to resurrect their own dreams. She is compassionate while demanding nothing less than each student’s best. She is transparent in her own struggles, including sharing her own “coming back to school” story that reveals she was living out of her car at the time she walked into the BAAS office and decided to do whatever it took to earn her degree. Esther knows what it’s like to overcome obstacles on the way to achieving worthwhile dreams. Hearing her story, students realize they have the strength in them to persevere and overcome their own obstacles. In early March, Esther shared wonderful and exciting news with us. She was accepted to the Ph.D. program in Adult, Professional,

Familiarity bias means sticking with what you know – but there may be a lot that you don’t Are you a creature of habit? When you visit the grocery store, do you fill your cart with the products and brands you’ve bought for years? The same cheese, the same wine, the same soap. Is that because they’re the best of the options … or because they’re the ones you know best? It can be hard to tell, can’t it?
GET FAMILIAR WITH FAMILIARITY
A familiarity bias is the subconscious tendency to gravitate toward what we know, often without realizing it. It’s why you might place the same coffee order every time without thinking twice, or perhaps why you’ve consistently owned a particular brand of car. Lots of us go with what we know – and that’s not always a bad thing. 054 ALT Magazine | April 2019
However, when it comes to your financial plan, leaning too heavily on what’s familiar can lead to an underdiversified portfolio and gaps in your wealth plan. By trying to play it safe, you could actually be putting yourself and your hardearned wealth at risk.
securities, or a disproportionate number of their investments could be large, well-known companies or those they’ve worked for. Plus, if an investor chooses a stock solely because of its name, they might not have researched all of its underlying characteristics – like risk.
HOW CAN A FAMILIARITY BIAS DISRUPT YOUR FINANCES?
Familiarity might be playing a role in some of your decisions if:
The trouble with familiarity when it comes to wealth is that it can sway people to make decisions that aren’t aligned with their holistic financial picture. When it comes to investing, this often leads to a lack of diversification in portfolios. For example, if someone is selecting investments based on familiarity, they might be overweighted in domestic
•You often frequent the same places and order the same things. •You consider yourself loyal to certain brands, whether cars, clothes or toothpaste. •You gravitate toward products and places that you’ve heard of, perhaps because you’ve seen them in a commercial or heard someone talking about them.
Just because you like a company as a consumer doesn’t mean it is the best fit for your portfolio. And just as we shouldn’t overestimate what’s familiar, we shouldn’t necessarily underestimate what’s unfamiliar, either. For example, someone might not know much about certain estate planning solutions but that doesn’t mean these specialized vehicles aren’t a good fit in their financial plan. Similarly, an individual may opt for a traditional savings vehicle instead of considering alternative solutions like 529 plans or HSAs.
When familiarity factors into your financial plan:

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Payback Time Bass fishermen don’t realize that we actually get to fish two spawns - one is the bass spawn and the other less known is the bream spawn. We all know about the bass spawn, but what do we know about the bream spawn? Well, bream spawn about a month later than bass. If you think that bream predication on bass fry is something, just check out the payback that the bass get on the bream. While the bream are spawning, the bass eat both mature and fry. Bass will hang around the bream beds and raid them for a quick meal all day long, moving in, feeding, and moving off a short distance to rest up until the next meal. If you locate several bream beds, make a note where they are and come back in about 30 minutes throwing a bream type bait or colors. There should be one or two bass hanging around. Catch them and move to the next bed and repeat. The bass have finished their post spawn resting period and are ready to chow down and bream are plentiful. If you fish a bed and don’t get bit, it could be that either they have already fed or the bass have been caught. It wouldn’t hurt to check the bed again later.
