December brings back so many memories. Many of them are from a childhood that was full of fun for me and my brother. We were always coming up with some way to create fun when there was really none to be found. You know, we only had 3 television channels, no iPhone or iPad, and no computer. What we did have was creative minds...and we also had a dog named Friskie. Friskie was a tiny chihuahua and she was ours. Well, our mom fed her but she never claimed her. We did. We would run through the house with Friskie chasing us. We would make an “blanket safe spot” on the floor that would become Friskie’s guard post. Then we would jump from bed to bed seeing if we could make it before she attacked! I remember one Christmas when I was very sick with the flu, Friskie was right by my side the whole time. It’s amazing how they just know when you need them.

After having children, I realized what it meant to have traditions each holiday season. Thanksgiving dinner was important, just like Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were. Our traditions always seem to involve food, with Christmas Eve starting with cheese trays, ham, cream cheese with jalapeño jelly, and lots of smiles! We open our presents and have a wonderful time enjoying each other’s company. Christmas is for celebrating the birth of Jesus and grilling steaks. A quiet, peaceful day that signifies the end of the year.

This year our normal traditions will be a little different — or maybe a lot different. I’m not sure exactly what they will be but I know change is coming.

It’s always interesting to hear about other traditions and the Carlow family definitely has theirs. Anne, my fabulous writer, and I both had such a wonderful time talking with both Nancy and and Judge Carlow, learning about their life together. What wonderful memories had flooded their family. Just walking into their offices is a walk down memory lane - one I truly loved taking with them. I hope you all enjoy making your own memories and if you don’t have traditions, start some new ones! Looks like that’s what we will be doing this year. It’s ok. It will all work out! May God bless you and yours! Merry Christmas!

All Rise For The Judge Judge Carlow retires and leaves the stand for the last time.
By: Anne Granado
At its core, family is meant to serve as both our roots and our wings. Our families ground us in our shared history, traditions, and stories, but they also support us as we endeavor to reach new heights and discover new passions. One family in our community that exemplifies this illustration is the Carlow family. James and Nancy grew up Maud, met in Maud, raised children in Maud, and still attend the same church in Maud where they were married. Their roots are distinctly entwined in the East Texas soil where their families raised them and where they, in turn, began their own family. However, through the years, James and Nancy have also supported each other as they sought new endeavors in business and politics. “What does family mean to me? In one word: everything,” Judge James Carlow says. “My family has always supported me in everything I have done. Without their support, I wouldn't have made it. “ 012 ALT Magazine December 2019
James and Nancy’s family story begins in the small town of Maud, Texas. James was raised as an only child. He was brought up in the Methodist church in Maud and the other kids there were like brothers and sisters. “We were a close-knit group and did many things together,” James says. “I was also very active in Boy Scouts and enjoyed camping and fishing and all sorts of other activities. We lived on a small 40-acre farm on the edge of town and raised cows. I showed calves in FFA and got interested in the cattle business.” Nancy was the youngest of three children. Her father was a carpenter who was sought out due to his admirable wood-working skills. After he retired, he built grandfather clocks and other furniture. Nancy says that he “could do anything and was good at everything.” Her mother was a stay-at-home mom, which was very typical at the time. Her strengths were her ability to cook and feed a crowd in
a moment’s notice. She was also an excellent seamstress, and she made all the family’s clothes, pajamas, prom dresses, and even household curtains. “Mother would have supper ready when Daddy got home from work, and we would all sit down and eat together as a family. Being a close-knit family was important to all of us, even at a young age,” Nancy says. “When I look back, I realize how little we had monetarily. But at the time, us kids were not aware of it. Mother could pinch pennies to provide whatever we needed.” James and Nancy met in first grade at Maud; they did not have kindergarten back then. The two were friends in school, and the classes were so small that everyone knew each other really well. “One of the students in my class was a little red-headed girl named Nancy,” James says. “We started dating as seniors. She invited me to a Baptist youth party, and we have been together since that date.” After graduation, James and Nancy attended Texarkana College for two years to get their associate degrees. Nancy and James would carpool to college, and James continued farming. Then, they transferred to Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches to finish their degrees. James chose SFA because of the location. “I had been buying alfalfa hay in the Red River valley in the Texarkana area and hauling it to southeast Texas and selling it off the truck to cattle farmers. My hay lot was in San Augustine, TX, only 19 miles from Nacogdoches,” James says. “By being close, I could monitor my trucks who were, by then, hauling from North Central Oklahoma and from Kansas. I was running five semis by then and doing well. On weekends and holidays, I would drive to Blackwell, Oklahoma, to get a load and drive to San Augustine for my crew to sell.”
As the family dairy business grew from 60 cows to over 400, James was elected to the Production Credit Association board of directors. Soon after, the PCA had a large dairy repossessed and did not know what to do with it, so they talked James into buying the cows and taking over. “That meant I was now milking 1600 cows and haying and farming 2000 acres to feed them. I joked and told friends that I was now working three, nine-hour shifts, seven and one-half days a week!” James says. “My wife and sons also worked in the business. Both sons worked on the farm when they were not in school or playing ball.” Though their professional endeavors are important, James and Nancy count their family as their richest blessing. They have two sons, Brad and Blake. Brad is five years older. The boys are now grown with children of their own. Brad and Ashley have four children: Taylor, Shelby, Triston, and Briley. Taylor is married to Taylor (Nancy calls her “Taylor girl”). Shelby is married to Caleb Stephens. Blake and Melinda have two children: Malori and Mason. Malori, Taylor and Shelby have already graduated from college. Triston will graduate in December. Briley is a ninth grader, and Mason is in the seventh grade. “In 2015, our boys and their families gave us a surprise 50th Anniversary reception at the Maud United Methodist Church where we were married and where we have remained members. They even decorated the tables like we had them 50 years before,” Nancy says. “It was a beautiful surprise. God has
James and Nancy married on September 11, 1965, right before their senior year of college. After college graduation, Nancy and James returned to Maud where James bought half interest in a small dairy operation. At first, Nancy taught elementary school, then high school. After a few years, she quit teaching and worked in the office at the growing family dairy keeping cattle records and accounting. She and her mother-in-law also owned Ann's Fashions in New Boston for thirteen years. Then Nancy began working at the family equipment dealerships where she still works today. richly blessed our marriage and our family. Each day, we remember and are thankful for each other and for our wonderful family. We give God the glory for our happiness.” With the growth of their family, Nancy and James also saw the growth of their dairy business. This is when James got very active in politics in Arkansas and Washington. He worked dairy legislation on the state and national level, and he worked with dairy leaders, congressmen and senators through Associated Milk Producers, Inc., and other groups to help dairymen. “I personally got to know the key agriculture congressmen and senators and traveled to Washington D. C. when our legislation was up for discussion,” James says. “Nancy, Brad, and Blake took care of everything at home while I was in Little Rock, San Antonio, and Washington. After selling my dairy interests as a result of the dairy buy out program, I then turned to local politics.”
began his first term January 1, 1987. He only planned to serve one or two terms, but as projects started, James desired to see their completion. He was beaten in the 2010 election and returned to private business, never expecting to run for office again. However, James stayed involved in politics and worked on transportation issues and funding for highways and intermodal activities as well as military funding for Red River Army Depot and Red River Redevelopment Authority. “The depot and its tenants continue to provide jobs and economic opportunity for the entire Four States area. Supporting them has been my passion and I will help them any way possible in the future,” James says. “I plan to stay involved in the continued development of I-69 especially the section from I-30 in Texarkana to Queen City. Though the Judge’s work in politics and business often called him away from home, family traditions “are a way of life” for the Carlows, and Nancy made sure that the family found time to get together. Birthdays were always celebrated with cake and gifts, but holidays changed as their family changed. “As the families grew, it was not easy working around schedules,” Nancy says. “Many years ago now, we began having my side of the family over for a bingo party the weekend after Christmas. Everyone brings a finger food and bingo gifts. We have tons of fun, and this has grown to also include in-laws and other friends.” When growing up, James’ family on his mother’s side would have their family celebration on Christmas Eve. Again, families grow and move away. “To keep a tradition alive, we had to make some changes. We now host this gathering on the Saturday before Christmas each year,” Nancy says. “They come from Dallas, Austin, and our local area. We have a great time! We will not see some of these family members until the next Christmas.”
important because this area will have three interstate highways going through it: I-30, I-49, and I-69. Any city in the United States that has three interstates will prosper in the future. That dream I hope to see in my lifetime.” In the late 80's, James and Nancy purchased an equipment dealership in DeKalb. In 1992, they bought Tom's Tractor Co. in Texarkana. David Meadows and Brad Carlow became partners with James at that time. Since then, they have continued to add dealerships as they became available. However, in the Judge’s hiatus from office, local politics in Bowie County were not going so well: taxes were raised, salaries were cut by 15%, people were laid off, progress stopped. “I was encouraged in 2014 to run for my old job one more time,” James says. “I agreed because I love this county and want it to flourish and provide a place for the next generation to have a great place to live and raise their families. That is what I hope my legacy will be.” 016 ALT Magazine December 2019
Easter is also a special time for the Carlow family when they host an egg hunt on Easter Sunday. “Family and friends from near and far come to enjoy the fun. Last year we hid over 1200 eggs,” Nancy says. “When the older kids decided they were too old to hunt, I began making several prize eggs with five and ten dollar bills inside. Now they ALL hunt eggs.” The family also likes taking the time to be together at their condo in Hot Springs. “There have been a few times when both sons and all their families were there together,” Nancy says. “It was wonderful!” Now, James and Nancy’s children carry on the family legacy that they built. Currently, both Brad and Blake Carlow help run the equipment dealerships that have grown to 11 stores in Texas and Arkansas. Their main lines are Kubota and New Holland, but they also have Mahindra and Case, as well as others. They sell large equipment farm implement lines, plus lawn and landscape lines. Their grandson, Taylor, has come on board at their Bryant, Arkansas, store. “We are looking forward to Triston graduating so he can join the accounting team, and you can find Mason on Facebook representing all the stores with his equipment videos,” Nancy says. “We enjoy being together as a family, whatever we are doing.”
Recently, Judge James decided to retire before his term was completed. Not only does this decision give James more time for his private sector interests, it also gives him more time with the people he loves the most. “My family lives close by, and we work in the business together. We eat together, and the grandkids are close by except for one who lives in Frisco. We see the grands often and cherish every minute,” James says. “They are the future of our family, and we are so proud!” Though he is retired, James says that he still plans to stay involved with the I-69 Alliance where he is currently serving as vice chairman. “I will also help Red River Army Depot with anything I can. My plans are to continue supporting TexAmericas and keep up with them by attending monthly meetings and talking to staff,” James says. “Their continued success is vital to the growth of the Ark-La-Tex area. They have some exciting projects they are working on.”
of the church, and their grandchildren would be the sixth generation at that church. “Thinking about our legacy, I would like for us to be remembered as honest, hardworking Christians who care about others,” Nancy says. No matter what the future holds, James and Nancy know that they can rely on their family to remind them of where they come from and give them the support they need to continue growing their family legacy. “Family is the embodiment of who we are. I cannot imagine life without our family,” Nancy says. “We share, we cry, we laugh, and most of all we love. We have been truly blessed.”
James also plans to spend more time on the ranch checking cattle and other projects. This is calving season so he is in the pasture checking on cows and recording information on the delivery of new calves and the nutrition needs of the cows. He also visits the dealerships regularly to check in with the employees. “They are like family, and I enjoy keeping up with them. I also look at reports and identify weak spots,” James says. “I check on the Title Insurance offices often to see if everything is going well and check on their needs.” Another important aspect of the Carlow’s lives is their involvement in their church. James is a lifetime member of the Maud United Methodist Church, and Nancy has been a member since they married. Nancy taught Sunday school for years and also had the youth group for over 25 years. They have served on every committee and in every office ALT-Mag.com | December 2019 017

Northern Hills Baptist Church “A Place to Call Home”
Written by Michelle Horton Northern Hills Baptist Church, located at 6000 Sammy Lane, Texarkana, Arkansas, is truly a place to call home. With several programs dedicated to all ages, giving and knowledgeable staff members, and a congregation that loves like none other, this church is filled with everyday people who want to love on you and share Jesus with everyone. With the Lord’s blessing, the church has recently added to their existing building, opening an entire children’s wing, teenager’s wing, and a large conference room with seating for 100+. These new additions have allowed for a much-needed increase in space and members. The expansion, completed by ML James Construction, opened its doors in September 2019. Even though these new additions are exciting on their own, the history of Northern Hills Baptist Church is worth noting as well. Northern Hills Baptist Church, previously named County Avenue Baptist Church and Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, began with a meeting of a group of Baptists and Methodists at Bogg Springs, located in Wickes, Arkansas, in the early months of 1871. This meeting was an effort to locate and secure a building and land in Texarkana which they could share. The outcome 036 ALT Magazine December 2019
of that meeting was the donation of three acres of land on March 8, 1871, by Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wooten to the trustees, with an existing building known as Union Church. The Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and the Methodists used the building on alternate Sundays, each only having half-time pastors. The Baptists used the facilities until August 24, 1886. The records indicate that about this time, Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Bramble sold five acres of land to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church for the sum of $50, in the area now known as Spring Lake Park School. Even though the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church moved on the new property and began construction of a building soon after its purchase in 1886, it was about 1907 when the windows were installed, and the building finally completed. This first building was located about the middle of the 3600 block of County Avenue. In 1915, one night after prayer meeting, this structure burned to the ground. The second building was constructed on the southwest corner of the 3600 block of County Avenue. This was a stucco building, approximately 50’ x 50’, without classrooms. Pastor Carter’s daughter, Dora, was instrumental in changing the name from Mt. Pisgah to County Avenue Baptist Church in 1917. In 1930, a two-story classroom annex was added to the stucco structure. This building was in use until Dr. I.K. Cross became pastor in 1941, and
soon after began construction on a 40’ x 80’ tabernacle to be used as a sanctuary while continuing to use the old building for classrooms. On Sunday, August 12, 1945, the tabernacle burned, and the decision was made to remove the old stucco building that remained and erect a new and larger structure on the corner of 36th Street and County Avenue and was completed in 1946. A two-story educational annex was added, and the basement of the original building was remodeled during the ministry of Dr. Elvin Crocker. Since the Mt. Pisgah/County Avenue Baptist Church was the first Baptist church in Texarkana, it is believed to be the parent church of nearly every Baptist church in the city. County Avenue Baptist Church was also the first church in Texarkana to conduct a daily radio ministry, which was initiated during World War II; and as a result of this ministry, reached many men in service, at home, and abroad with letters and literature. In 2003, County Avenue purchased 22 acres of beautiful property on I-30 and Sammy Lane in Texarkana, Arkansas, with great anticipation of building a new complex. Under the leadership of current pastor, Dr. Roger Copeland, the church built a new facility at this location and moved to its current home while changing the name to Northern Hills Baptist Church in 2013. This new church facility included a sanctuary, choir room, baptistery, foyer, classrooms, and offices. The Lord saw fit to continue to expand the church family which led to the newest additions being completed in September 2019. Looking towards the future, the church hopes to add on a fellowship area, gym and remodel the current sanctuary.
As impressive as the history and current building project is, inside the church doors is where you will truly find a family in the members of Northern Hills Baptist Church. They are loving, giving, and always looking for a way to serve others through God. The church currently has programs for all ages and meets several times a week as they seek ways to grow closer to God.
KIDZ412 Kidz412 meets every Wednesday night at 6:30pm for Pre-K through 6th grade. The 1st-6th grade classes are on a three-year journey through the Bible. Wednesday nights are filled with lots of fun, worship, and God’s Word! Their name comes from 1 Timothy 4:12 which says, in part, “Let no man despise thy youth...”. 412 also represents the ages of our worshippers - ages 4-12.
IMPACT TEENS IMPACT TEEN Student Ministry meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in their teen center (the CORE) to hang out with friends, play a few games and participate in a time of worship and Bible study. All students, 7th through 12th grades, will find a comfortable, friendly atmosphere; a place where you can be yourself and find acceptance through the love of Christ. Teens at Northern Hills know it can be intimidating the first time you visit a new environment; you may come in alone but will leave with new friends and a smile on your face.
T-N-T T-N-T (Twenties & Thirties) is the young adult ministry of Northern Hills Baptist Church. This group is open to singles and married couples. Their goal is to build relationships, strengthen families and assimilate young adults into the life of the church. Mid-Week, the Wednesday night gathering, is their weekly time of fellowship, praise, worship and teaching. Other activities are also scheduled throughout the year including fellowship opportunities, recreational activities, and service projects.

SENIOR ADULTS
BIBLE CHALLENGE
The senior adults of Northern Hills enjoy a wide variety of scheduled activities, meals, and trips together; as well as friendly fellowship. It’s a good thing these folks are no longer in their career fields, they just wouldn’t have time for work with the multiple opportunities to meet together.
Bible Challenge is a great program that teaches students through 12th grade the Word of God. They learn Bible Verses, Bible Truth, Bible Passages and more, and meet on Sunday afternoons at 5:00pm.
RU RECOVERY PROGRAM RU is a biblically based, Christ-centered recovery program designed to rescue, recover, and restore those in addictive behaviors with the power of the victorious hidden life found only in Jesus Christ. RU meets every Friday night at 7:00pm in the Conference Room.
MEN & LADIES BIBLE STUDIES Bible studies for both men and women are found several times throughout the week, both day and evening hours. These smaller studies allow for developing relationships with others and diving deeply into the Word of God.

WORSHIP NHBC enjoys a balance of praise and worship songs blended with traditional hymns that transcend generations and prepare the heart for the Word of God to be presented. Dr. Roger Copeland boldly preaches God’s Word focused on Jesus Christ as the center of all they do. Bro. Copeland’s expository (verse by verse through scripture) preaching method and illustrations through story, helps all ages understand the relevance of God’s Word in our daily life. These truly are exciting times at Northern Hills Baptist Church, and we would love for you to come and be a part of the experience. Worship services are held each Sunday at 8:30am, 10:30am and 6:00pm. Adult worship services are held in the sanctuary on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm while other ages enjoy personalized services throughout the church.

How long have you been in law enforcement? Â What is your current job title? I have been in law enforcement for 26 years, and I am currently a patrol Sergeant for the Wake VIllage Police Dept.
What is the funniest moment you remember during your law enforcement career?
I was born in Monroe, Louisiana, and moved to Hooks, Texas when I was two years old. I attended Hooks High School from K-12 and continued to live in Hooks until 2007. I moved to Texarkana in 2007 where I currently live.
There is one moment that really sticks out. While at Texarkana PD me and another officer, (who I will not mention, if he reads this article, he will definitely know its him) answered a disturbance call at Bramble Courts on College Hill. At that time the "Bubba" teeth were popular and he had a pair. He put the "Bubba" teeth in his mouth and he handled the entire call with those in his mouth. Do you have any idea how hard it is to try to be professional when you have someone doing that in front of you? The people in the disturbance never said a word or questioned his horrible teeth. Me and that officer still talk about that to this day.
What drew you to law enforcement? When did you want to become a police officer?
Tell us your most exciting, adrenaline-pumping, moment during your law enforcement career!
Tell us some background: Â Where did you grow up? Where did you attend school? Do you have an interesting story about you?
I've always had an interest in law enforcement. When I was in high school a lot of my friends were older and already in law enforcement. Kevin Schutte, Keith Schutte and Jerry McEntire worked for TTPD. Greg Prewitt and Charlie Evans worked for the Hooks police department. On weekends I would do ride a longs and and it was always something I wanted to do. The Chief of Police in Hooks in 1992 was Les Colley, a man that I truly admire. He sponsored me through the police academy. After the academy I reserved for the Hooks Police Dept until March of 1994 where I went to work for the Texarkana, AR Police Dept. While at Texarkana I became an FTO (Field Training Officer), I was in the traffic unit and was also a K-9 officer. After over 10 years with Texarkana I went to work for the Bowie County Sheriff's Office. I worked for them for several years until I went to work at Wake Village, where I have been for over nine years.
How did your family/friends react to the news of your career choice? My family knew that I wanted to be in law enforcement. When I got the call and job offer they were very excited for me. They were a little nervous about a 22 year old kid going to work in Texarkana, but they were very supportive.
Describe your first day on the job as a police officer. I honestly don't remember what my first day on the job was like, it's been a few years ago. I can say that I know that I was very excited and I knew that I hadjoined an elite bunch of guys and was very proud.
044 ALT Magazine December 2019
Working in law enforcement for as long as I have, you have many stories to tell. People have always said "you should have written everything down," and I wish I would have. I guess the most bizzare thing that I can remember is on January 31, 2001; its weird how you remember dates like that. I was a K-9 officer for Texarkana, AR working drug interdiction on I-30. I stopped a car on I-30 at the 7 mile marker. I knew something wasn't right about the stop because the driver drove several miles with me behind him with my lights on, but wouldn't pull over. When he finally pulled over and I was walking up to the car, the driver produced a handgun and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound with me right by the car. I honestly think God was looking out for me that day. Things could have certainly ended differently.
What are the greatest challenges and rewards of law enforcement? One of the greatest challenges for me is trying to get people to understand that we are human too. We have bad days just like everyone else. Just because someone sees some officer on TV doing something wrong doesn't mean that we are all like that. A lot of officers got into this profession because we like helping people. People don't call the police because they are having a good day! A lot of times we see people at their worst and do all we can to make their day a little better. One of the best rewards for me is when someone unexpectedly walks up to you and thanks you for your service. I was leaving the doctor's office the other day and was in uniform. A little girl, probably about five years old walked up to me and said, "thank you for your service." When I looked at that little girl I thought to myself, " that is why I chose law enforcement."
What interests do you have outside of law enforcement? My family loves going to the lake in the summer. We try to go every weekend if we can. It is somewhere where I can forget about work and enjoy nature. I also love riding my motorcycle. That is my get away when I want to be alone or if I need to do some thinking. It is very relaxing.
How do you handle the stress and pressure the job brings? One of the ways I try to handle the stress is doing anything outside. I will work in the yard, play around in my shop, pretty much anything outside is stress relieving for me.
We have all heard that families play a supportive role in a police officer’s life. How does your family support you? As law enforcement officers we see things that the ordinary citizen only sees on TV. We may have been on a bad car wreck that day or dealt with a serious call. My family knows that we, as law enforcement officers, see that on a regular basis. If I have had a bad day or stressed, they are good about giving me my space. Letting me vent to them, to a certain extent. All in all my family is very supportive.
Reflecting on your time as a police officer, what is one thing this career has done for you in a positive manner?
If someone were going to enroll in the Police Academy, what are three key things you’d like them to know?
This job made me grow up fast. Starting law enforcement when I was barely 22 years old it forced me to grow up quickly. When I was responding to calls and trying to help people that were twice my age, I had to have it together and let them know that I was there to help them. I truly believe that law enforcement is a calling. I'm so thankful that God called me to this profession. I can't see myself doing anything else.
You have to have thick skin. A lot of times people are angry at the uniform, not you. You have to be a people person, and have good communication skills. Don't take your job home with you. You have to leave the stress and worries at work.
What do you wish more people could realize about law enforcement? Like I said earlier, we are human too. We have a lot of the same problems as the people we deal with at work, maybe not on the same level, but our lives aren't perfect either.
Tell us what your department does a great job of! Our department is great with social media . Our Detective, Todd Aultman, has created a facebook page for our department as well as other social media things. Whenever we have a big case Todd will post things on social media and the public has had a great response. They have helped us identify suspects that we are looking for as well as given us great crimestopper tips. A big thank you to our Wake Village citizens.

NAVIGATING MEDICARE The Medicare mile marker is on the horizon. Most U.S. citizens become eligible at age 65 for the health insurance program facilitated by the federal government, with an open enrollment period at the end of each calendar year thereafter. Given the somewhat complicated coverage options – Part A, Part B, Part D, Part C, Medigap – it’s easy to get lost on the Medicare enrollment journey. Fortunately, we can get you there. MEDIGAP – SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE (OPTIONAL) Offered by private companies, helps fill in the potholes in original Medicare coverage to minimize out-of-pocket expenses such as deductibles, copays and coinsurance. BOTTOM LINE: Medigap is optional, but you must be enrolled in Parts A and B. Benefits are similar in all states, but new policies do not offer prescription drug coverage.
OPTION 2: PART C – MEDICARE ADVANTAGE Provided by private HMOs/PPOs, Part C includes Part A and Part B services except hospice; most plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, and some cover vision, hearing, dental and wellness programs that are not part of original Medicare. BOTTOM LINE: You must be enrolled in Parts A and B, but cannot select Part D or Medigap. The Part C premium is in addition to the Part B premium.
OPTION 1: ORIGINAL MEDICARE
PART A – HOSPITAL INSURANCE Helps pay for a stay in the hospital or skilled nursing facility, home healthcare, hospice care and medicines administered to inpatients. BOTTOM LINE: Typically, everyone benefits from Part A. PART B – MEDICAL INSURANCE Helps pay for physician and outpatient services such as office visits, rehab therapy, lab tests, medical equipment and doctors’ services in the hospital. BOTTOM LINE: You can opt out of Part B if you have another source for medical insurance. PART D – PRESCRIPTION DRUG COVERAGE (OPTIONAL) Offered by private companies, helps pay for prescription drugs you use at home, plus insulin supplies and some vaccines. BOTTOM LINE: Part D is optional, but if you do not sign up when first eligible, you could pay more later. You must be erolled in Part A or B. 058 ALT Magazine December 2019
NOTE: Premiums and other costs listed are for the majority of people, according to the official Medicare website. Amounts could be higher for people with an annual household income of more than $170,000. For additional details, visit the government’s Medicare website: www.medicare.gov. You can sign up for Medicare in person at your Social Security office, by telephone at 1.800.772.1213 or online at www.Medicare.gov. © 2019 Raymond James & Associates, Inc., member New York Stock Exchange/SIPC. © 2019 Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., member FINRA/SIPC. Fish Tales with Mike Brower Fishing On The Go.
Several times in my life I have been on a trip somewhere and found out I could have fished if I just had something to fish with. I had an opportunity, but no rod, reel, or tackle. So a couple of years ago I got a 9 foot fly rod and have started taking it with me when Debbie and I travel. It’s a four piece and breaks down to less than 31 inches, tubular case and all. The size makes it easy to carry on a plane or in the back seat, and I always carry a pack with some tackle in it. Now if I’m somewhere and the opportunity to fish for anything from the bank comes along, I’ve got it covered. My next investment will be a packable seven foot spinning rod so I can expand my options to a different way of fishing, as well as techniques I’m better at than with a fly rod. Like the fly rod, it breaks down to four pieces and will fit inside a the same case as the fly rod. My small amount of tackle will fit in my back pack. These type setups are suited pretty well to “urban fishing” where people fish in the middle of cities like the small ponds around Dallas, the river canal in San Antonio, or small creeks that run thru Denver or Little Rock. Now, it’s not like fishing from your boat with all your tackle, but it at least gives you something to do that’s different from the normal fishing and gives me something constructive to do so I don’t roam the streets and get in trouble or get thrown in Facebook jail.

The new generation of emergency care.
Drug Take Back Initiative Operation Medicine Cabinet
The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department is proud to partner with Texarkana Emergency Center in an effort to remove unused and out of date prescription medicines from your homes. •It is important to know that law enforcement is only interested in the removal of unused and/or outdated medications from the homes of our citizens. •It matters not whose name is on the prescription, by whom it was prescribed, where it was prescribed, or where you reside. •We stress that it makes no difference if you live in Texas or Arkansas. •We take back all medications, no questions asked. You can remove the label if you desire but it’s not necessary. •We ask that you do not deposit needles (sharps), inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, liquids, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, or thermometers.
One box has been placed behind the Bi State Justice Building at 100 N. State Line Ave., Texarkana, Arkansas and another outside the Texarkana Emergency Center, 4646 Cowhorn Creek Rd., Texarkana, Texas. These boxes are regularly checked and the contents are immediately packaged for destruction. If you would like to personally drop your medications off to law enforcement, you can at the Miller County Sheriff ’s Office on East Street and Bi State Justice Building in Texarkana.
You can learn more about this program by visiting www.artakeback.org or on Facebook by searching Arkansas Take Back or Arkansas Drug take Back. FIND
