‘Art of Self-Defense’ examines, satirizes toxic masculinity BY LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Director Riley Stearns says he didn’t realize he was making a perfect movie for 2019 when he started writing “The Art of Self-Defense “ four years ago. But his darkly comedic riff on toxic masculinity starring Jesse Eisenberg as a timid and “weak” man who takes up karate just kept becoming more relevant. The Harvey Weinstein allegations broke during the shoot in 2017 and the #MeToo movement became a phenomenon. “It was kind of weird that this idea that I had been feeling was very personal to me was really starting to spread into a direct discussion,” Stearns said. “More and more people are relating to the film in ways that I originally wouldn’t have intended, which is hugely humbling and very interesting to see.” “The Art of Self-Defense” is currently in 540 theaters nationwide, where it’s finding a healthy audience amid all the flashier blockbusters and superhero films in the multiplex. Eisenberg’s character Casey Davies is mocked even for his “feminine” sounding name. After getting brutally beaten one night by horde of masked motorcyclists, he stumbles on a local dojo run by an over-the-top alpha played by Alessandro Nivola and signs up for classes. And things take an unexpectedly dark turn. “There’s an absurdity to him because he’s timid in such an extreme way and aggressive in such an extreme way,” Eisenberg said. “Casey is a product of this very unusual world. As much as I loved the character I also loved the world he exists in which is a world where people speak in this very unusual, blunt, earnest way.” Imogen Poots plays the film’s sole main female character, an instructor at the dojo who despite all her skills has not been promoted to black belt. team was predominantly women. “It’s a film about men, starring men, written by a man. Everything about it was so overtly masculine, which I knew, I was making fun of it, but still at the end of the day was not going to be on the side of films passing the Bechdel Test,” Stearns said. “My intent then was to say, let’s find the best people for the job to take on these department head jobs but

also really try to focus on finding the best women for the jobs as well, to really try to counteract that. I just knew I didn’t want it to be a set full of men. It was really important for me to have that female perspective.” Both Stearns and Eisenberg see some of the changes happening in the industry as many wake up to the injustices women have been subject to for too long. Soon after filming “The Art of Self-Defense,”

Eisenberg found himself on the set of “The Hummingbird Project,” with Salma Hayek and Erika Rosenbaum, who both allege Weinstein sexually harassed them. He remembers that the day that Hayek was writing her New York Times op-ed on set about the alleged harassment , something else happened in another department. “This guy on set made some misogynistic comment in the

wardrobe department and was fired on the spot,” Eisenberg said. “And I remember thinking, ‘This is amazing. This day fully crystalizes the changes that are possible: Two women bravely telling their stories about a person with outsized power in our field and another guy having to be held accountable for something he did that was awful on set... I just thought, if this is sustainable this is great.”

‘No. 6 Collaborations Project’ Atlantic

If anything, Ed Sheeran’s new album does two things. It lets him show off his tremendous range. And it lets him show off his impressive rolodex. A stunning who’s who of music’s top stars — including Cardi B, Justin Bieber, Travis Scott, Khalid, Eminem and Bruno Mars — appear on “No. 6 Collaborations Project.” The result is an understandably scattershot of styles — G-Funk, grime, trap, R&B, tropical hip-hop, ballads, hair metal — but what knits it together is an impossibly high level of songwriting and an undeniable joy. Sheeran seems to revel in playing with Migos effects (Skrrt!), rap with Eminem, sing in front of a horn section and be on a track with Cardi B purring “Okurrr.” The title of the 15-track project is a nod to his 2011 “No. 5 Collaborations Project,” which saw Sheeran team up with U.K. rappers. This time, he welcomes everyone from H.E.R. to Paulo Londra, an artist from Argentina. If listeners go on to explore some of the lesser-known collaborators — like the brilliant rapper Dave — then everyone wins. Standouts include “Cross Me” with Chance the Rapper and PnB Rock, “Take Me Back to London” with Stormzy and “Beautiful People” with Khalid. Despite all the collaborations, there are little touches that remind you it’s a Sheeran album. He’s still got that sadsack, lovable misfit thing going on, despite earning acclaim and millions of bucks. Two songs — “Beautiful People” and “I Don’t Care” with Bieber — have Sheeran at a party where he feels he doesn’t belong. “I always feel like I’m nobody,” he sings. One thing that has changed is that marriage seems to agree with Sheeran. If in the past, he was creeping a little in an ex’s DMs, the newly wed Sheeran has created an album awash with love messages to his wife. “I’m stickin’ with my baby, for sure,” he sings on “Cross Me.” On “Put It All on Me,” he admits:

“Having my woman there is good for my soul.” Missing home is a continual theme. He does get frisky for someone not Mrs. Ed Sheeran on another fun track “South of the Border,” a kind of U.S. cousin to his “Galway Girl.” He and Camila Cabello celebrate a lass with “brown eyes, caramel thighs” who makes him cry out (OK, a little cringingly) “te amo, mami.” Finally, Cardi B storms in to play up the double entendre of the title and announce: “I think that Ed got a lil’ jungle fever.” A few of the guests elevate some songs — Stormzy and YEBBA, among them — but there are a few underwhelming tracks, including the Sheeran-Ella Mai union on “Put It All on Me” and the Bieber song. For the last track, Sheeran, Mars and Chris Stapleton — just take a moment to wrap your head around that stunning trio — get into a Led Zeppelin groove with “BLOW,” a head-banger awash in sexual imagery. “Pull my trigger/Let me blow your mind.” Too late. Avicii adds ominous strings with Imagine Dragons to create the nearoperatic “Heart Upon My Sleeve.” His collaboration with Martin on “Heaven” may remind you of the Coldplay man’s work on the smash hit “Something Like This” with The Chainsmokers. It may even be better. “TIM” is the culmination of Avicii’s song-based flair that incorporates elements outside EDM. Unlike other DJs, his songs aren’t rushed. He lets them breathe. The predictable tricks his rivals use are absent here. The songs feel organic, not processed. Lyrically, it’s tempting to find darkness and, sure, it’s there. “Can I get a little peace?” go the lyrics on one song. “Down upon my knees,” go another. “I still feel broken.” But “TIM” is actually optimistic in tone. “All the breath in your lungs/Is stronger than the tears in your eyes,” the lyrics go on “Hold the Line.” And despite fighting with a lover in “Tough Love,” it concludes: “There’s no place I’d rather be than in your arms.” Even “SOS” — which reunites Avicii with Aloe Blacc, who sang on Avicii’s biggest hit, 2013’s “Wake Me Up” — has hope: “I can feel your love pulling me up from the underground.” There is the power of love all over “TIM.” Let that be his legacy. — By Mark Kennedy, The Associated Press

He’s made an old-fashioned double-feature (“Death Proof,” of “Grindhouse”), resurrected the wide-screen format of 70mm Ultra Panavision (“The Hateful Eight”) and generally presided as the pre-eminent B-movie evangelist for a generation. The power and thrill of exploitation movies, he has earnestly espoused, can conquer all evils — or at least slavery (“Django Unchained”) and the Nazis (“Inglourious Basterds”).

‘Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood’ Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie Rated: R Theater: AMC 12, AMC 8, Clifton 5, Richland

But “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood,” set in 1969 Los Angeles, is Tarantino’s most affectionate and poignant ode yet to the movie business. It’s a breezy, woozy Hollywood fable that luxuriates in the simple pleasures of the movies and the colorful swirl of the Dream Factory’s backlot. Some pleasures are nostalgic, and some — like driving down Sunset Boulevard or martinis at Musso & Frank — are everlasting. Here, movie love feels contagious, like something in the air. In one of the film’s best scenes, Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate explains at a theater’s ticket office that she’s in the movie, the newly released caper “The Wrecking Crew,” (“I’m the klutz!” she says cheerfully). screen, giddily mimicking her character’s martial-arts moves and watching to see if the audience laughs at one of her lines. (They do.) The pleasures in “Once Upon a Time” are also ours. Tarantino, has lowered his typically feverish temperature to a warming simmer, bathing us in the golden California light and the moviestar glow of his leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. They spend copious amounts of time driving through the Hollywood Hills in a creamy Coupe de Ville, riding along like Butch and Sundance and just as nice to look at. DiCaprio is Rick Dalton, a Burt Reynolds-type actor of TV Westerns (his claim to fame is the ’50s hit “Bounty Law”) whose career is stalling. Pitt is Cliff Booth, his stunt double and best friend, a war veteran with a bad reputation but a friendly,

relaxed manner. They have a natural, easy rapport, with Booth doubling as a drinking buddy and support system for Dalton, who’s increasingly anxious about his typecast future. (Al Pacino, as his agent, urges him to head to Italy for a spaghetti Western.) In DiCaprio’s finest sequence, he chats between takes on a Western called “Lancer” with a frightfully serious Method Acting 8-year-old co-star (Julia Butters) before forgetting his lines. After a bout of selfloathing in his trailer, he returns and nails the scene. DiCaprio, a preternaturally selfpossessed actor himself, captures the whole arc beautifully. When word got out that Tarantino’s latest film would take place around the Manson murders, it was easy to wonder what genre mayhem the director would bring to this epochal

moment. We know what carnage resulted when Zed was dead, so what did Tarantino have in store for the demise of the ’60s? It’s not that “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” doesn’t revolve around that grisly tragedy. It looms always in the background, and eventually in the foreground, too, after Booth picks up a hitchhiker (Margaret Qualley) who leads him to the Manson compound at Spahn Ranch, the former production site of TV and film Westerns where Manson’s mostly female acolytes emerge and Booth goes to check on the owner, an old friend, George Spahn (Bruce Dern). Dalton and Booth are fictional concoctions surrounded by real people, including their neighbors: Tate and her husband, Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha). By the film’s climax, blood will spill and movie-made historical

revisionism will have its day. But I suspect a lot of Tarantino fans will be taken by surprise at the film’s leisurely pace, set more to a (and this a good thing) “Jackie Brown” speed. As in that film, Tarantino isn’t purely living in an over-the-top movie fantasy world, but one teetering intriguingly between dream and reality. The dialogue and action has slowed down enough to allow a little wistfulness and melancholy to creep in. At times, his path is a little wayward and prone to digressions. Tarantino feels perilously close to simply turning his movie into several of Dalton’s, so eager is he (like the Coens were in “Hail, Caesar!”) to lovingly adopt those period styles. But usually, the detours are hard to resist. In one, Booth ends up in a fight with Bruce Lee (Mike Moh) on the set of “The Green Hornet.” And if you’re going to make a movie that celebrates what’s grand about Hollywood, it helps to have Brad Pitt in it. The chemistry between him and DiCaprio, together for the first time, is a delight; I would gladly watch them drive around lacquered, golden-hour Los Angeles, with cinematographer Robert Richardson trailing them, for longer than the already lengthy running time of “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood.” Pitt, in particular, appears so utterly self-possessed. It’s a swaggering grade-A movie star performance in a movie that celebrates all that movie stars can accomplish — which, for Tarantino, is anything. That the youthful, exuberant Tate was robbed of that potential is one of the wrongs Tarantino is righting here. But his fairy tale also swells with an even larger and optimistic vision. For today’s doomsayers of movies, which are seen by some as a less potent art form, “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” imagines an apocalypse denied. Tate, and the movies, will live forever.

Shark Week – Stay calm, it’s back BY GEORGE DICKIE

Fans of the oceans’ apex predator will find plenty to sink their teeth into when Shark Week surfaces for its 31st programming frenzy this week on Discovery Channel. Swimming into view Sunday, July 28, the annual eight-day block devoted to all things shark offers up a plethora of knowledge on everything from great white hunting behaviors (“Great White Kill Zone: Guadalupe,” Thursday, Aug. 1), the accounts of shark-attack victims (“I Was Prey,” Friday, Aug. 2) and how to survive in shark-infested waters (“Laws of Jaws: Dangerous Waters,” Tuesday, July 30) to the latest in shark-detecting technology (“Sharks of the Badlands,” Monday, July 29), an attempt to create the perfect shark suit (“Andrew Mayne: Ghost Diver,” Friday) and how a giant prehistoric shark went extinct (“Expedition Unknown: Megalodon,” Sunday).

There is even a celebrity shark swim with actor/comedian Rob Riggle (“Shark Trip: Eat Prey Chum,” Sunday). In “Expedition Unknown: Megalodon,” host Josh Gates speaks to paleontologists and marine biologists and even goes diving in shark-infested waters to investigate the decline and eventual disappearance of “The Meg,” a powerful predator that reached lengths up to 59 feet, millions of years ago. “The old thinking up until a few years ago,” Gates explains, “is that the Meg went away because of a climate change, it went away because of the onset of an Ice Age, it went away because there was a stellar event where the Earth was bathed in a type of radiation that possibly changed some of the ecosystems on the planet. And that’s always been the story about the Meg and that story is changing and that’s what we wanted to investigate

with this show, is it may be that the Meg went extinct a million years earlier than previously thought at a time when there was no real big climactic change. And if that’s the case, it means that it probably died out because it was outcompeted by other animals.” In another piece of noteworthy programming, Tuesday’s “Laws of Jaws: Dangerous Waters” places hosts Paul de Gelder, Jamin Martinelli, Mike Dornellas and Nick LeBeouf in harm’s way to re-enact five recent shark attacks to find out how things could have ended differently and what people can do to prevent or fend off an attack. In one experiment, Martinelli climbs on a paddleboard in the Bahamas to test how sharks react to her presence and various actions, such as falling off the board. Her advice to someone confronted by a shark?

“Try to make eye contact,” she says. “... That’s the most important thing, is for them to know that you are alert and you’re watching them. Also, if you do have a paddle, that’s great because you can actually keep your distance from them, so they may circle just to kind of check you out but you can keep a barrier. “And ... just remain calm,” she continues. “In any amped up situation, if you kind of get hysterical or (start) freaking out, then you just forget all of this. So if you’re super-calm, then you’re more aware to be totally in the situation, saying, ‘OK, I see the shark, all he’s doing is checking me out. I can (handle) this. I’m watching him, he’s watching me.’ And then from there, either get back on the board or the boat but just do everything super-slow while watching him the entire time.”
