Sounds of China to make Penn State debut Feb. 5 UNIVERSITY PARK — Sounds of China, one of the Asian country’s contemporary folk ensembles, will make its Penn State debut at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5, in Schwab Auditorium. The performance will feature new arrangements of traditional Chinese melodies and will coincide with Chinese New Year, which denotes the year of the pig. erhu (a two-stringed spike fiddle), liuqin (a four-stringed mandolin), xun (a globular, vessel flute), pipa (a plucked four-string lute) and guhzeng(a zither) — with Western orchestral instruments. The musicians are led by Ma Jiuyue, artistic director and resident composer of the China National Traditional Orchestra. Jiuyue, once called “the genius composer of world music” by Grammy Awards judge Jeff Rona, is known as one of the pioneers of Chinese neo-folk music. NEW YORK — The star of the upcoming “The Sopranos” prequel says a young Tony Soprano will be a part of the film — but had good reason to be careful about how much else he revealed about “The Many Saints of Newark.” Alessandro Nivola talked to The Associated Press about the project on the red carpet recently before a panel discussion led by creator David Chase to celebrate the 20th anniversary of “The Sopranos” in New York.

“I guess I got to be kind of discreet about it, so David Chase doesn’t kill me,” Nivola said. “I’m playing Dickie Moltisanti, who is the central character in the movie, and he is Christopher Moltisanti’s dad.” Christopher Moltisanti, who was played by Michael Imperioli in the series, was a protege of Tony Soprano, the New Jersey mob boss portrayed by James Gandolfini. ‘Bought to Rot’ Bloodshot Records

The words just tumble out of Laura Jane Grace on her new album, a torrent of thoughts, observations and memories from one of rock’s most charismatic figures. The Against Me! singer and guitarist has taken a break from her superb punk band to explore more glam-rock terrain with the side project Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers. Her lyrics are barely contained by the structure of the songs, bellowed one moment or stretched into sing-talk poetry. One song, “Manic Depression,” has 250 words, another has 240 and a third has 230. “Bought to Rot” is less heavy than previous Against Me! offerings, with some songs that could easily fit on mainstream alt-rock radio. It’s also less angry, more theatrical and more surreal. (Many of the songs feel in the vein of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”) It’s a dizzying, sometimes hysterical, sometimes heartbreaking, but always deeply personal album. It kicks off with the claustrophobic “China Beach,” with Grace seemingly jarred awake and confused: “Are you my enemy and are we at war?” she asks. “Are you the hunter? Am I the prey?” Grace, whose life and career changed dramatically when she came out as a transgender woman in 2012, has teamed up in the new band with Against Me! drummer Atom Willard and Against Me! producer Marc Jacob Hudson on bass. The album’s lyrics explore everything from love gone bad to mental illness, with a sense of rootlessness throughout — two songs have Grace in hotels and one in an airplane. “Infinite distance, eternal displacement,” she sings on “Born in Black.” Fans of the Windy City may want to turn down song No. 8, titled “I Hate Chicago.” It’s an expletive-laced stew of angst toward America’s third-largest city, with Grace complaining about everything in her hometown from the food (“Learn how to make a pizza”) to sports (“I hate the Cubs, the Sox, the Blackhawks and the Bulls”) to its citizens (“You and all your self-righteous hipster hoods can go to hell.”) It’s

Other standouts include the R.E.M.reminiscent “Apocalypse Now (& Later),” the Lou Reed-ish tunes “Amsterdam Hotel Room” and “Manic Depression,” and the David Bowie-adjacent “Screamy Dreamy.” There’s electricity in every song and an abrasive unpredictability throughout. NEW YORK — Missy Elliott is making history as the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, whose 2019 class also includes legendary British singer Cat Stevens and countryfolk icon John Prine. The organization announced the new group of inductees Saturday. Other inductees include Tom T. Hall, who Johnny Cash called his “all-time favorite songwriter”; Jack Tempchin, who cowrote songs for the Eagles and Glenn Frey’s solo albums; and Dallas Austin, the songwriter behind radio hits for TLC, Monica, Pink, Boyz II Men, Madonna and more. Elliott is just the third rapper to enter into the Songwriters Hall, following Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri’s inductions in 2017 and 2018, respectively. While she’s written her own raps, Elliott has also lent her writing skills to everyone from Beyonce to Whitney Houston to the late icon Aaliyah. The new class of songwriters will officially be inducted on June 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Songwriters are eligible for induction after writing hit songs for at least 20 years. Stevens, who also goes by Yusuf (the name he took when he converted), has been a respected writer since releasing his debut in 1967. He’s had a string of Top 40 hits, from “Peace Train” to “Morning Has Broken.” And “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” which he wrote five decades ago, has become a hit for multiple artists, including Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow. Prine’s inclusion is extra-special since he was nominated for this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but didn’t make the cut. The 72-year-old has become an affable songwriting guru for many of Nashville’s talented young artists, including rocker Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, country rebel Sturgill Simpson, and the married Americana darlings Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires.

Berting Brett leads a five-piece Nashville-based band and celebrates the lush sound created by siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter in “We’ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered” Feb. 1 at the Mishler Theatre. The show is a collaboration between JD Promotions LLC and Altitude Entertainment, a sister company of the Altoona Mirror. “When you say tribute, people think you are going to be impersonating and that is not the case. We’re celebrating Karen and Richard’s musical legacy with music and stories,” Berting Brett explained in a phone interview. “The way we perform the music we are not impersonating Karen and Richard by wearing wigs or talking like we are in the ’70s. We are paying respect, celebrating their legacy. I’m not trying to be Karen ... there is never going to be another Karen Carpenter. She was a one-of-a-kind artist.” Often, a tribute act alters the key songs are sung in or makes other modifications but Berting Brett, a metzo soprano, has the musical range necessary. “We perform songs in same keys (as they did) so you get the same timbre and

warmth. For us it’s recreating an emotional and nostalgic experience,” she said. Karen and Richard Carpenter sold well over 100 million records worldwide and 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of The Carpenters singing with A&M Records and releasing their first album. “We know from our experience with Altitude that our promotional power sells tickets so when Jim (Daski) approached us with an idea to collaborate on an event, we were very all ears, but wanted to know more about the event,” said Ray Eckenrode, general manager of Altitude said. “It didn’t take very long to sell us on a partnership when we heard it was Carpenters’ music, which we think is a perfect match for our area.” The timing of the show makes it “especially meaningful,” Daski of JD Productions said. In addition to making a great Valentine’s Day gift, the show “celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Carpenters wonderful legacy that they left to music. Michelle Berting Brett will present this legacy with both story and song. You won’t be disappointed,” he said, noting the show has sold out venues with rave reviews. On April 25, “We’ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered” will be part of a 50th anniversary celebration when the show returns to the Downey Theatre in Downey, California, hometown of the Carpenters. Such inclusion demonstrates how The Carpenters’ fans — new and established — embrace the show described as an intimate behind-the-scenes portrait of the pop music phenomenon that defined an era,

has been playing in theatres and showrooms all over the U.S. since 2013. It grew out of an idea Berting Brett, a farm girl from a musical family in Saskatchewan, conceived after being told repeatedly that she sounded like Karen Carpenter. Berting Brett studied opera and musical theater and then toured the world in show bands and in her own cabaret shows while based in Toronto. Her now-husband, producer Mark Brett, encouraged the shows development. The first show played at a small club in Toronto with Berting Brett accompanied only by a pianist. I Matt Berry plays guitar and previously worked with John Michael Montgomery, Tiffany and Collin Raye. Watching audiences’ reactions keeps the show fresh for Berting Brett, she said. “We receive a wonderful, positive warm reaction and take them on a nostalgic journey. It is incredible and (the songs) are a part of our youth. People had the Carpenters’ songs sung at their weddings and sang them to their babies in their arms. They have such an emotional reaction to the music.” But their audience comprises all ages as younger fans have “discovered” Carpenters’ music via YouTube or through their parents. She credits the timelessness of the Carpenters’ music to gorgeous melodies and music that profoundly expresses emotion. “With 2019, it’s been 10 years since we began the show. But there’s been no abatement; audiences still want to hear the songs and desire us to perform,” she said. “It’s been a great gift to work on this project and its an incredible effort to build this show. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Upsideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a cliche-ridden, exploitative mess BY MARK KENNEDY The Associated Press

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s said that January is one of the prime months that Hollywood chooses to dump its most embarrassing films and â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Upsideâ&#x20AC;? doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly disprove that notion. Few films in memory have squandered so much acting talent in such a cliche-ridden, exploitative and dishonest way. It deserves its frozen grave.

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Upsideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Starring: Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart Rated: PG-13 Theater: AMC 12, Richland, Clifton 5

The film stars Kevin Hart as a lazy, skirt-chasing ex-con hoping to reconnect with his estranged wife and son. He accidentally gets a job taking care of an obscenely wealthy New York businessman who became a paraplegic while hang gliding, played by Bryan Cranston. (â&#x20AC;&#x153;You as rich as Jay-Z?â&#x20AC;? Hartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s character asks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, richer,â&#x20AC;? comes the reply.)

You can virtually write the rest as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Upside â&#x20AC;&#x153; unspools. Will Hartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s street-wise Dell break his high-class boss out of his luxury Park Avenue apartment and teach him about the joys of corner-bought weed, street hot dogs and driving the older manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fleet of Ferraris very fast? Oh, yes. Rich white dudes in these films always need loosening up. Will Cranstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Phillip teach his young aide about the joys of opera, investing in start-ups, kumquats and abstract painting? You saw that coming, too, huh? Poor black guys in these films could always use some smartening up. The movie is based on a true story â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and lifted from the 2011 French film â&#x20AC;&#x153;Les Intouchablesâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but no one really worked on the shaky racial angle for an American audience, one that has seen elements of this in movies such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Driving Miss Daisyâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trading Placesâ&#x20AC;? (that last one also has a pottery smashing scene). Hart often plays a version of the magical black man, a hurricane of truth who readjusts the stuffy white world. There are moments when race could have been addressed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your plantation is bananas,â&#x20AC;? Hartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dell tells Phillip, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m nobodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s servantâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

however itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quickly dropped. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a moment when the two men bond over both feeling mostly invisible to the larger society â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one in a wheelchair, the other a minority in white America â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but that peters out. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not enough drama and yet not enough laugh-out-loud moments. Hart shines in a scene in which he encounters a high-tech shower with a robot voice in German, but a later scene in which he cuts Cranstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facial hair is marred by a Hitler joke. When you have hired consummate comedians in Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, relying on a Hitler joke is a sign something has gone horribly wrong. (Another sign: This joke â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;You are Verdi ugly.â&#x20AC;?) The film comes with its own heavy baggage, including that it was previously owned by The Weinstein Co., before it collapsed amid the Harvey Weinstein sexual misconduct scandal. Reacquired, it is released as Hart deals with fallout over his previous homophobic tweets, not helped now by a performance in the film in which he balks at using the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;penisâ&#x20AC;? and initially outright refuses to change his bossâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; catheter because it means touching another manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s privates. Hart, a comic force, reveals his limits

as a dramatic actor in his fish-out-ofwater role, while Cranston shows only a few glimpses of his formidable skills, especially when he turns steely. Appearances by Nicole Kidman, Aja Naomi King and Julianna Margulies are welcome, understated â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and completely wasted. Mostly the problem is that once the filmmakers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; led by director Neil Burger â&#x20AC;&#x201D; establish their odd couple pairing, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what to do with it. Dell needs money to repair his family and Phillip needs love after losing his wife. Jon Hartmereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s screenplay needs tension, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artificially added when the rich dude starts lashing out at his staff and growing depressed after a bad blind date. The answer? Our heroes go hang gliding. Roll credits. Only one person really comes through this whole meandering mess unscathed: Aretha Franklin. The late Queen of Soul, it turns out, is the key that connects Dell and Phillip, particularly when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s revealed that Franklin sang opera, too. Her music fills the soundtrack and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only reason this film gets any points, the only upside, if you will. Better yet, skip this movie and just put on one of her CDs.

Black Monday’ lets Regina Hall be fierce and funny

Black Monday signifies one of the most devastating days in Wall Street history, but enough time has passed for some — or at least for Showtime — to find humor in it. The comedically toned series “Black Monday” debuts Sunday, Jan. 20, with “House of Lies” veteran Don Cheadle returning to the cable network as another tireless wheeler-dealer ... a broker involved in the 1987 event cited as the worst crash ever to rock the stock market. Ultimately, he sees it as an opportunity against the old-thinking financial establishment. Also starring are Andrew Rannells (“Girls”) as a financial-world novice, and Regina Hall

(“Girls Trip”) as “the street’s” first female head trader. With Paul Scheer, Bruce Dern and Horatio Sanz featured as well, the program counts Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg among its executive producers, along with creators David Caspe (whose wife, Casey Wilson of his show “Happy Endings,” also appears) and Jordan Cahan. Hall’s Dawn Darcy comes out of the gate strong in “Black Monday.” Justifiably calling her “a beast,” the actress says, “What I really love is how much comedy they’ve put in that world. Usually in a show like this, the woman is the one who’s like, ’Come on, guys, get it together.’ I love that

Dawn plays with the guys a little, and she’s kind of just as bad. As the show progresses, you see that she’s really one of the guys.” Though “Black Monday” is set in the late 1980s, Hall believes Dawn is just as relevant to today: “This was at a time when things were a lot less politically correct. I can’t even say that irreverence toward women was ‘tolerated,’ it just was what it was. The fact that she had to learn to navigate that world, and still be successful, makes her a pioneer ... but it’s not like she has all-stars on her team.” Still, Dawn’s work is cut out for her opposite Maurice “Mo” Monroe, played by Cheadle.

Maintaining she’s “always been a huge fan” of the actor, Hall notes, “To watch him work in person, and to be able to work with him and off him, it’s been a dream. He’s so rich as an artist and gives you so much. I feel like I’ve learned a lot by watching him.” For “Scary Movie,” “The Best Man” and “Think Like a Man” alum Hall, “Black Monday” follows a significant film year in which she earned acclaim for “The Hate U Give” and “Support the Girls.” She reflects, “It all feels kind of wonderful. There are people who won’t know me (from movie work), but I’m all right with that, because Dawn has a lot of colors. She’s pretty badass.”
