For a revolutionary animation studio, Pixar has been surprisingly wary of advancing technology. The company may be at the forefront of digital animation, but for 25 years, its spiritual DNA has been decidedly nostalgic. It’s the old-school new school. In “WALL-E,” high-tech humans have devolved into overweight TV addicts who need to be jarred out of their stupor. In “Monsters Inc.,” modern kids have grown too blase to be scared by monsters, prompting a scream shortage. “Cars” preached smalltown, off-the-beaten-track values. Pixar’s latest, “Onward,” goes even further. “Long ago, the world was full of wonder,”a narrator introduces. There were magical creatures like trolls, gnomes, elves and dragons with special powers. But the drumbeat of progress, from light bulbs to airplanes to smart phones, has steadily sapped all the fantasy from life.

In New Mushroomton, a Los Angeles-like sprawl of suburbs and freeways, those once magical creatures live an orderly and predicable life much like our own, just with unicorns always getting in the trash and pixies that ride in biker gangs. The set-up is quintessentially Pixar, even if “Onward” — with its blueish, pointed-eared elves in flannel shirts and ‘70s-style anthems — nearly resembles Pixar’s answer to prog rock. This is one of the studio’s odder looking films, one that owes much more to Dungeons & Dragons and the rockgeek exuberance of Jack Black than a typical animated feature.

“Onward,” written and directed by Dan Scanlon (“Monsters University”), may initially be a tough sell, and it’s not a movie likely to immediately rise to the top of everyone’s Pixar’s rankings. (“Ratatouille” forever.) But its eccentric odyssey of two brothers delving into a fantastical past to find their way through grief and self-doubt is a worthy addition to the studio’s canon. Its world is a little incongruous (one wants to unsee the centaur police officer), and the movie’s depiction of death isn’t so well honed as it is in, say, “Up” or “Toy Story 3.” But “Onward” makes the most of its strange assemblage to tell a sweet and moving story — enough so to leave you yet again shaking your head at Pixar’s magic act. Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland) is an elf in high school with typical teenage problems. He’s turning 16, a passage into young adulthood that for Ian is filled with angst and anxiety. His lack of self confidence is only the more worrisome to him when he hears that his late father, whose death came before Ian was born, was an impressively “bold” man.

Ian makes a “new me” list with the entry: “Be more like Dad.” He lives with his mother, Laurel (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and older brother, Barley (Chris Pratt). Barley drives a beat-up purple van with a winged horse decal and a cassette-tape deck; he’s nicknamed the van Guinevere. (You will leave “Onward” swearing that someone owes Jack Black money.) Clad in a denim vest and spiked wristband, Barley doesn’t appear headed toward grand success in life, but he’s an affectionately enthusiastic brother to Ian and a young man with passionate tastes. He’s an aficionado of the roleplaying game Quest of Yore, and an ardent defender of artifacts from the past. To stymie developers, he melodramatically chains himself to magical relics. The adventure of the movie kicks off when Ian opens a gift left for him by his father (voiced by Bryan Cranston): a staff and spell that will bring Ian’s dad back for a day. Ian only half finishes the trick: His father returns as just a pair of slacks and dress shoes. In a race to beat the next day’s sunset, the kids tow their half-formed

father on an odyssey in search of a crystal for another chance at the spell. A pair of elves with a half-resurrected dead dad is, unquestionably, esoteric territory for even Pixar. When Ian gives him a pillow torso, shirt and shades, the effect is a little like “Weekend at Bernie’s.” And yet, “Onward” still works. As they hunt from place to place, the elves’ quest reawakens long dormant pools of magic. Pressured by insurance companies and Yelp reviews, a manticore (Octavia Spencer) begins to question turning her lair into a TGI Fridays-like restaurant. In a series of such encounters, Ian gradually grows more courageous; the movie isn’t as unconventional as it seems. But “Onward” pivots, movingly. It turns out to be more about brotherly love than anything else. As a Pixar entry, it may be the first to explicitly grapple with not the trials of childhood, but the fraught onset of adulthood. Either way, by the time “Onward” has wrapped its journey, it will probably be the only movie with a manticore to make you cry.

There is nothing particularly extraordinary about director Gavin O’Connor’s “The Way Back,” except perhaps for Ben Affleck’s performance. This is a quiet drama about a lonely alcoholic who gets a lifeline when he’s asked to coach a high school basketball team. It’s the kind of movie people like to say “Hollywood doesn’t make anymore,” which is only partly true. It’s also the kind of movie you might feel like you’ve seen before.

Affleck plays Jack Cunningham, a lumbering, middle-aged man who drinks all day, every day. He cracks open a can in the shower. He pours a little something into his coffee tumbler at his construction job. He drinks on the drive to the bar. He drinks in the bar. The next day he repeats the cycle all over again. He’s what you might call a functioning alcoholic, although this state of drifting through life in a booze-addled daze doesn’t make him happy. He’s merely surviving in his sad, dirty apartment until he gets a phone call from his past: The head of his old high school, Bishop Hayes, wants him to come back to the place he once ruled as an all-star player to coach their currently less-than-glorious basketball team.

It’s exactly what you’d expect, but the scenes with the team are some of the best in the film — funny and spirited and wholly engaging — even if they do seem ripped from the playbook. But “The Way Back” doesn’t fancy itself a typical sports drama. It’s attempting to be more than that with a lot of threads and side plots that never quite develop to any satisfying end. The basketball isn’t the focus. Jack is. And this is a guy who’s got a lot of ghosts that the movie takes its time to reveal. The script from Brad Ingelsby and O’Connor withholds a fair amount, perhaps to make “The Way Back” a more accurate reflection of how often people’s past troubles come up in everyday life. But in retrospect, there’s a nagging sense that it was just done for a cheap punch in the gut. If there is an overriding problem with “The Way Back,” it’s that: The whole thing feels a little like a cheap punch in the gut. Of course an audience is going to want to see Jack recover. Of course they’re going to be heartened when he starts caring about the basketball team. Of course they’re going to cheer when he wins and sigh at his inevitable slip-ups. Or perhaps that’s too cynical. “The Way Back” does seem to have been constructed with an earnest spirit, and Affleck carries the film well on his larger-than-usual shoulders, capably showing all sides of a down-on-his-luck alcoholic — the funny, the sweet, the explosive and the selfdestructive. It’s chilling to see the light go on in his eyes with a drink, and the moment when it goes out too. Affleck has it in him to use his personal experiences to make a great drama, whether writing, directing or acting, but “The Way Back” isn’t it.

Caribou comes back with immersive album Eric Johnson’s vocals, acoustic guitar shine BY JAKE O’CONNELL

Caribou is Canadian musician and mathematician Dan Snaith and “Suddenly” is his first album since 2014’s dreamy “Our Love.” His latest record is a vibrant collage of choice samples, warped production, taut instrumentation and delicate but assured vocals. Two introspective torch songs bookend the record. In between, transition is the only constant. Thoughtful meditation gives way to a bombastic drum-fill. A pool of tranquil piano is stomped on by a flossing battle rapper. Each song is an aural expedition. “You and I” is all riveting pulse, bass throb and digital glitter that begins with Snaith singing, “It’s a lie/I can always count on.” An amped cheerleader, guitar theatrics and tenor sax coalesce for the finale. “Magpie” starts out like vintage Boards of Canada until Snaith’s fey voice blooms and the synths start to flutter away. What stands out is how seamlessly everything comes together. Disparate

Eric Johnson’s new album shows the amazing Texas guitar wizard moving another mystifying step closer to a singersongwriter role. Nine of the 13 tracks on “EJ Vol. II” are mostly sung ballads, some featuring a string quartet. A few of the songs have memorable melodies and gorgeous guitar solos, but they pale in comparison to the purely instrumental tunes showcasing Johnson’s fluid chops and exciting musicianship. Among the vocal tunes, “Different Folks” is one of the best, with a trademark electric guitar tone and lyrical solo as Johnson expresses his heartfelt thoughts in a manner similar to John Lennon’s “In My Life.” “Divanae,” about a struggling painter and his model around the time of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, also hits the spot. While it’s the instrumental break on “Let a Friend Find You,” led by a gentle acoustic guitar and an aching lap steel, that is its most beautiful section.

parts morph organically in a mastery of counterbalance. It’s inside that equilibrium where “Suddenly” resides. The sudden shifts are exhilarating and the record’s strongest suit. The title might refer to an abrupt realization of our current state, and the record seems to be about grasping the moment. Embracing the flow. Learning from your past by never looking back. And those suspended seconds when you suddenly feel more alive.

A fine take on Bert Jansch’s arrangement of the traditional “Black Waterside” leaves off the vocals, sparing you the specifics about its tale of deception and cruelty, but the music’s interpretation is clear. “For the Stars” is also an excellent example of what makes Johnson’s insistence on so many vocal performances so baffling, as his guitar playing is loaded with an abundance of emotion and sensitivity that only the best singers can hope to emulate.

anny Myrick, Matt Warren and Travis Howard’s combined hit list reads like a who’s who of country music elite: Miranda Lambert, Tim McGraw, Maddie & Tae, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Craig Morgan, Gary Allan and others in musical styles ranging from country, blues, rock and Americana. The trio comes to the historic Mishler Theatre March 20 for Songs & Stories Vol. 9 brought to Blair County by Round the Mountain Music Inc., owned by Dana Snyder and JT Garber of Altoona. It’s a lineup sure to delight all music lovers as the artists reveal what inspired them to write such hit songs. Howard has co-written 10 hits with Miranda Lambert and promised to share the spark of inspiration behind “Famous in a Small Town,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, “Down” and others. Without giving too much away, “Famous in a Small Town,” involves an argument he had with a former resident of Pittsburgh, Pa. Howard, who recently turned 50, talked to the Mirror on an “off week” in his schedule. An off-week because he and his wife, Brittany Howard, were moving to a new home in Studio City from Hollywood. He traveled nearly non-stop as a guitarist/singer with Brooks & Dunn when they toured and also spent a year with Kix Dunn and Reba during a residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas where for two hours they played to a packed house of 4,300 fans. Howard, who has produced music for TV and movies, recently completed a small role in an upcoming Fox series “Filthy Rich” as well as producing the music for the 10-episode series expected to air in the fall. ”It’s a story about a family who creates a Christian TV network and how it has grown into a $25 billion TV network and all the weirdness that creeps in. It’s salacious and fun. “The Plot Against America” premieres Monday on HBO.

‘The Plot Against America’ – Populism divides the population It’s November 1940 and aviation hero Charles Lindbergh has just defeated Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the presidential election. What lay ahead for the people of the United States are deep divisions and rampant anti-semitism as the xenophobic populist turns the country toward fascism. That’s the alternate history premise of “The Plot Against America,” a sixpart miniseries premiering Monday, March 16, on HBO. Written and executive produced by David Simon (“The Wire”) and Ed Burns (“The Brothers McMullen”), the series views the storyline through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in Newark, N.J. Herman Levin (Morgan Spector, “Homeland”) is a family man and insurance agent with ambition and many opinions and

he isn’t enthralled with the new chief executive. Neither is his homemaker wife Bess (Zoe Kazan, “Ruby Sparks”), especially when they both notice anti-Jewish sentiment roiling in their community during a house-hunting excursion with their sons Philip and Sandy (Azhy Robertson, Caleb Malis). Bess’s sister Evelyn (Winona Ryder, “Stranger Things”) also isn’t particularly crazy about the new president but she is very fond of one of his key supporters, Rabbi Lionel Bengelsdorf (John Turturro, “The Night Of”), so in the interest of perhaps snagging a husband, the middle-aged woman starts attending pro-Lindbergh rallies, unbeknownst to her family. The story is based on the 2004 Philip Roth novel of the same name, which

Simon feels has particular resonance today. “I think it’s fairly apparent that the political paradigm that’s now — not only in America, but internationally you’re seeing it, in terms of populism and nationalism and the rise of xenophobia and fear of the other, that’s the reason this got made,” Simon explains. “... Somebody came to me with the book about five years ago ... and said, ‘I think this would make a great miniseries.’ And I said to him, ‘I enjoyed the novel. It’s a nice little artifact. It was fascinating in its moment, but ... that doesn’t seem to be our political moment.’ “So, you know, how wrong was I?” he continues. “The reason to do this is that ... because of the forces that are now in play politically, the piece is incredibly relevant.”

Comparisons have been made to the Amazon series “The Man in the High Castle,” which imagines life in an America had Axis powers won World War II, but Kazan insists this is a completely different beast. “It isn’t about the Nazis conquering America,” she argues. “It’s about American ideology being turned into a nationalistic, edging on fascistic ideology. It’s about how our thinking can be turned so easily and it’s really about in some ways the history of our country, those ideologies coming to the fore and that it could happen again.” “It will,” Simon agrees. “There will always be a moment at which there is some political advantage to saying, ‘Somebody is less American.’ And you should be worried about that.”
