Former Altoonan’s jazz music gains attention posthumously BY PATT KEITH pkeith@altoonamirror.com

This month, the music of the late Steve Prosser, an Altoona native, travels to Valencia, Spain, where his ex-wife and singer Kris Adams and her band will perform at Cafe Mercedes Jazz during Berklee College’s spring break. The performances come following the October release of Adams’ “We Should Have Danced: The Music of Steve Prosser” on Jazzbird Records. The album features Adams’ original Prosser lyrics with arrangements by pianist Tim Ray and bassist Paul Del Nero, both whom will join Adams in Spain. A Spanish flautist will fill out the jazz chamber quartet in Valencia. Prosser, 60, a 1970 graduate of Altoona Area High School, died in 2012 from complications of a fall after gall bladder surgery. Prosser, was a professor of at Berklee College of Music for more than 30 years; a decade as chair of the ear training department. Local composer and Penn State professor Dave Villani knew Prosser well, being sepa-

William Prosser served as Mayor of Altoona and is memorialized by having the 8th Street Bridge named for him. His brother, Mark Prosser lives in Virginia, and is quoted in a Boston Globe article as saying music helped Steve Prosser cope with the loss of their parents, who died at a young age. The CD project has been a labor of love for Adams, who was married to Prosser for 19 years. Post-divorce the two remained good friends and Adams helped care for him in his final months. “I wanted to do this project because I had always loved the tunes that he wrote,” she said. “Most of them he wrote while we were married and he never did anything with them. After he died, I found a folder among his office materials that were set aside for me to go through. (The folder) was labeled ‘Tunes for CD’ so I kept it. A year later, I decided to start writing lyrics to the songs and make a recording. It took about four years. It was a very deep and personal journey for me. I really just wanted to share his music and to fulfill his wish, whether serious or not,

Adams, who has been singing since an early age, grew up in a music loving family. Her grandfather played organ by ear and her mother played piano. Adams began singing on stage in a touring children’s theater as a young teenager and had her first professional gigs at the age of 19 in Connecticut, singing in a latinjazz band, which included the late saxophonist Tom Chapin, according to a news release. While attending Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory, she met Prosser, a professor, pianist and arranger. She recorded her third disc, recently released (Jazzbird Records), “Longing” in collaboration with trumpeter/arranger, Greg Hopkins. There are different types of music represented, such as hip-hop recording artist Ty Brasel and rockers Manic Drive. Ledger, Dan Bremnes and Adam Angee from Stellar Kart and Audio Adrenaline will also be on hand to jam. There also will include a presentation from Dare2Share speakers Greg Stier or Zane Black. The stop at Bryce Jordan is near the end of the Winter Jam tour. It is the 41st stop of 42 cities. “There are plenty of seats. Come out and join us. It’s the next to last city of the tour. It’s been great crowds so far and a lot of fun. Don’t let money throw you, just come,” Carswell said. Tickets are $15 at the Bryce Jordan Center the day of the show. The small price is part of what continues to make the day so extraordinary.

“What makes Winter Jam special is that fans can see a large number of their favorite music artists and hear new artists for the price of a movie ticket (about). It’s affordable, family friendly, fun and inspiring. There is nothing else like it out there,” said Carol Anderson, tour publicist with CMA Promotions. The artists who are performing are hoping to provide an affordable show and a day of good vibes for everyone who attends. “I hope people leave with the question how did that make me feel or how was that different or man that inspires me. Maybe it will make you start to want to ask yourself questions. If I can start a conversation with someone through my performance, that’s the goal,” Hollyn said.

Robin Tunney lays down the law in ‘The Fix’ Robin Tunney stars in “The Fix,” premiering Monday on ABC. Former prosecutor Marcia Clark is a prime force behind a new law drama, but its star stresses that she’s not playing Clark. After her long run on “The Mentalist,” Robin Tunney returns to series work as ABC’s “The Fix” premieres Monday, March 18. Not unlike the result for Clark (an executive producer and writer of the show) in the O.J. Simpson trial, Tunney’s Maya Travis suffers a defeat in trying to make a murder case against a celebrity (“Lost” alum Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). She then goes off the grid for several years ... until the same actor becomes a murder suspect again, and Maya is brought back into the Los Angeles

and she cannot believe that the system failed the victim,” explains Tunney. “If you have enough money and have a fancy legal team, you can buy yourself out of a murder (charge), and that’s really depressing for her.” Additional “Fix” cast members include Adam Rayner (“Tyrant”), Merrin Dungey (“Alias”), Breckin Meyer (“Franklin & Bash”) and two veterans of “Necessary Roughness,” Marc Blucas and Scott Cohen. However, Tunney admits she’s still adjusting to her new experience of being No. 1 on a series call sheet. “I learned so much from (star) Simon Baker on ‘The Mentalist,’ ” she reflects. “He has such a strong work ethic, and

he would give tiny little hints along the way, and I listened ... things like, ‘When you do a walk-and-talk, you have to walk quickly if you want to give the scene urgency.’ I feel like I was so lucky to get paid to watch somebody who was really good at it at work.” Also fairly new for Tunney is being a working mom: Her first child, Oscar, turns 3 in June. “I’d wanted it for so long,” she notes. “I did a few movies before this and when I went to work in the morning, he’d either be sleeping or standing at the window, staring at me going down the driveway and sobbing. So, I was like, ‘This show had better be good!’ ”
