‘Hello Happiness’ Diary/Island Records

With just seven songs in 28 minutes, Chaka Khan’s “Hello Happiness” is a little bundle of joy, emphasis on the little. But you shouldn’t feel shortchanged. Consider it instead as a corrective to all those overlong, overblown collections of incessant sonic doodles and listen up as the iconic singer makes her feelings and intentions clear from the start: “Music makes me say/Goodbye sadness/Hello happiness.” Khan’s clarity of purpose comes on the back of a dramatic awakening after the 2016 death of Prince, a close collaborator, which helped her confront her own addiction to prescription drugs. The title track is a good sampler for the rest of the record — deep grooves, dancefloor beats and Khan’s excellent voice, which, even decades since her days with Chicago funksters Rufus and a dozen years after her last solo release, has not lost the ability to create its own flow while forming a tight connection to each song. The production from Switch and Sarah Ruba Taylor applies just the right amount of now sounds to classic disco and funk structures, with some space judiciously reserved for rapturous reggae on “Isn’t That Enough” and a gliding acoustic guitar and tap-taptapping percussion on cozy closer “Ladylike.” Elsewhere, the scalding, exuberant “Too Hot” isn’t shy to describe the kind of man who’ll earn a swipe right, and “Like Sugar,” a contortionist’s dream, features Khan on timbales and is based on the Fatback Band’s “(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop.” Chaka Khan has found some contentment and “Hello Happiness” is gratifying proof. — By Pablo Gorondi, The Associated Press

ing the sophisticated country and soul of the late ‘60s of Dusty Springfield or, more recently, Nick Lowe. The record’s style is also the work of Dan Auerbach (Black Keys), who lately has done similarly successful vintage productions for Dr. John, Robert Finley and Shannon Shaw. Recorded in Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound Nashville studio with aces (Gene Chrisman, Bobby Wood, Billy Sanford, Russ Pahl) whose resumes include a genuine roster of music legends, the songs achieve a natural dose of authenticity, even though they’re originals written by Yola and Auerbach, with Wood and other collaborators. Yola — born near the southwest English city of Bristol, a cum laude graduate of the school of hard knocks and briefly a member of Massive Attack — reveals herself to be kind of female Glen Campbell, a rhinestone cowgirl, if you will, with a similarly powerful yet effortless and honeyed voice beautifully conveying multiple shades of feeling, like on first track “Faraway Look.” The melody of “Shady Grove” has the unforced simplicity of a children’s melody, but the lyrics’ lament is all

grown up, while “Ride Out in the Country” describes a badly needed refuge from a relationship not worth saving. Fiddle and dobro put the title track, co-written with Dan Penn, on the country side of the scales, and “Lonely the Night” further confirms Yola’s vocal talents, as does the Simply Red-like “Keep Me Here,” with Vince Gill singing harmony. A few tracks with more spirited rhythms would have made “Walk Through Fire” an even more combustive listen, but there’s plenty of quality on hand and Yola is definitely a keeper. — By Pablo Gorondi, The Associated Press

For band members and listeners alike, the desired effect is the adrenalin rush. The album ranges around some, mostly between runaway jams and balladry. The lyrics are descriptive if not especially groundbreaking, and the musicianship is first-rate. The airtight harmonies and cohesive ensemble work reward repeat listening. The opener, “Principles of Salt,” veers toward the Old Crow end of the spectrum, jaunty and celebratory but filled with provocative declarations. America, for example, has given up and “overdosed on Adderall.” But then comes “Frozen Through,” a song that accelerates the pace. Standup bass and harmony drive the speeding train, kind of in the Mumford and Sons way but with a refreshingly less studied vibe. This one probably sounds great live, though it feels like the band could spin right off the stage. A ballad, “Crooked Pines,” might be the album’s most anthemic song. The lyrics paint a shimmering pastoral portrait that gradually becomes the setting for heartache, but the effect is majestic. The album’s lyrical sentiments veer toward sadness in that way, but the playing throughout “Illusions” rarely does. The pop singer collaborates with Kpop acts from South Korea and China for his new single “Let’s Shut Up & Dance.” Derulo tells The Associated Press that this kind of trans-Pacific song-anddance collaboration should become the norm for artists in the future. The song is also the first of four singles he plans to release in the coming months in tribute to his childhood hero Michael Jackson. Derulo says that he understands it’s a sensitive time to be honoring Jackson as allegations of child molestation have remerged, but he’s focusing on the performer who is the reason he became a musician, not anyone’s personal life.

ordan Peele has tightened his grip in “Us,” a less satirical and more slaughterhouse horror parable than the writer-director’s astonishing debut, “Get Out.” Despite its deficiencies, “Us” will leave all who enter its shadowy world convinced of Peele’s growing command as a singular conjurer of American nightmares. It’s a movie moment to savor. When was the last time a filmmaker’s sophomore release was greeted with such anticipation? It’s as if Peele struck such a deep and rich vein in “Get Out” that no one can wait to see what else he’ll uncover. Peele has found a new passageway into American psychology, and we’re all waiting outside the mine for him to call out from the dark with his latest revelation. And in “Us,” Peele has produced a terrifying artifact: a sinister ballet of doppelgangers and inversions that makes flesh the unseen underbelly lurking beneath every sunny American dream and behind every contented nuclear family. “The Birds.” Nightmares don’t always need clarification. But I do think “Us” would work better if it gathered its suspense more steadily and more closely tethered its ideas to its characters. If the doppelgangers are stand-ins for an otherness that we fear in others but deny in ourselves, I’m not sure zombie-like maniacs were the most interesting way to go, or the most humanizing. And Peele’s script, delving so relentlessly into terror, doesn’t leave either side of the mirror room for much reflection. “It’s all just craziness,” someone says. Yet there’s an undeniable power of “Us” as a deeper, more primal vision of a two-tiered truth in American society that’s as unshakable as one’s shadow. Peele, working with cinematographer Mike Gioulakis (“It Follows,” “Glass”), creates fever-dream images with passionate precision. And then there’s Lupita. While each member of the family excels, Nyong’o delivers arguably her fiercest, most extraordinary performance as both Adelaide and her monstrous doppelganger. The wild difference between the two will get the most attention, but I was most impressed by the great subtlety of her Adelaide, a quiet, uneasy woman with a dark secret. “Us” doesn’t match “Get Out” but Peele will surely have more sunken places to investigate. And for that we should be thrilled.

Peele’s newest movie, ‘Us,’ scares up $70.3M debut BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Jordan Peele has done it again. Two years after the filmmaker’s “Get Out” became a box-office sensation, his frightening follow-up, “Us,” debuted with $70.3 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The opening, well above forecasts, had few parallels. It was the largest debut for an original horror film (only the “It” remake and last year’s “Halloween” have surpassed it in the genre) and one of the highest openings for a live-action original film since “Avatar” was released 10 years ago. In today’s franchise-driven movie world, seldom has a young director been such a draw. But moviegoers turned out in droves to see what kind of freak-out Peele could muster in his sophomore release. “Peele has really crafted an extraordinary story that I think once again is going to capture the cultural zeitgeist,” said Jim Orr, distribution chief for

Universal. “He is recognized as just an amazing talent. He crafts films that make you think, that are extraordinarily well-acted, well-written and are amazingly entertaining.” “Us” took over the top spot at the box office from “Captain Marvel,” which had reigned for two weeks. The Marvel Studios superhero release slid to second place with $35 million in its third week. In three weeks of release, it’s made $910 million worldwide, and will soon become the first $1 billion release of 2019. Other holdovers — the animated amusement “Wonder Park” and the cystic fibrosis teen romance “Five Feet Apart”— trailed in third and fourth with about $9 million each in their second week. But the weekend belonged overwhelming to “Us,” which more than doubled the $33.4 million domestic debut of 2017’s Oscar-winning “Get Out.” The former “Key & Peele” star’s first film as writerdirector, “Get Out” ultimately grossed $255.4 million on a $4.5 million budget. “Us” cost $20 million to make, meaning

it’s already a huge hit for Peele and Universal Pictures, which notched its third No. 1 release of the year following “Glass” and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.” It’s also, as Peele has said, more thoroughly a horror film. While “Us” has drawn very good reviews (94 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences gave it a relatively low “B’’ CinemaScore. Paul Dergarabedian chalked that up mainly to moviegoers feeling shell-shocked when they emerged from the theater. “Us” stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke as vacationing parents whose family is faced with eerie doppelgangers of themselves. The film added $16.7 million from 47 international territories. While “Us” was propelled by a number of things, including Nyong’o and buzz out of its SXSW premiere, the main selling point was Peele. The 40-year-old director already has an imprimatur matched only by veteran filmmakers like Clint Eastwood.

“It’s really difficult for a director to become a superstar whose name gets people in theater, and Jordan Peele has done just that,” said Dergarabedian. “He’s a superstar director with a brand all his own, and that’s with two feature films under his belt. That’s pretty astonishing. That just doesn’t happen.” After a sluggish January and February, the overall box office has rebounded thanks to “Captain Marvel” and “Us.” The weekend was up 15.3 percent from last year, according to Comscore. The weekend followed an especially tumultuous week in Hollywood. On Monday, Warner Bros. chief Kevin Tsujihara stepped down following a sex scandal. On Wednesday, the Walt Disney Co. completed its $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox. In absorbing one of the six major studios in 20th Century Fox, Disney quickly made many layoffs and shuttered Fox 2000, the Fox label behind hit book adaptations like “Hidden Figures” and “Life of Pi.”

The fourth series version of “The Twilight Zone” premieres Monday on CBS All Access.

Over the history of television, few brands have been as iconic and enduring as “The Twilight Zone.” Consider that the supernatural, Rod Serling-created suspense anthology now has its fourth series incarnation. The show enters the streaming dimension by premiering with two episodes Monday, April 1, on CBS All Access — with “Get Out” Oscar winner Jordan Peele as host and narrator, and also as an executive producer. Among others sharing the latter job are Serling’s widow Carol, “The X-Files” alum Glen Morgan, filmmaker Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Apocalypse”) and TV veteran Greg Yaitanes (“Banshee”).

Normally to debut new episodes on Thursdays starting April 11, the latest “Twilight Zone” largely tells fresh stories. However, one of the franchise’s most celebrated tales, the monster-on-the-wing-of-anairplane thriller “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” gets a “reimagining” (as “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet”) with Adam Scott starring. Seth Rogen, Sanaa Lathan, Greg Kinnear, John Cho, Jacob Tremblay (“Room”), Allison Tolman (“Fargo”) and Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”) also will be in the “Zone.” The original “Twilight Zone” — which CBS aired from 1959 to 1964, and also is on CBS All Access — remains a weekday staple on both Me-TV and Syfy, the latter of which also offers holiday marathons of the series. Though she was a

producer of a 1994 “Twilight Zone: Rod Serling’s Lost Classics” TV-movie, the new show marks Carol Serling’s most sustained creative involvement thus far. “I am very happy” about the new version, she confirms. “It’s the fourth time around, and it’s an exciting venture for me. (The concept) has kept popping up, but I’m involved in a different way this time.” Indeed, 1983’s “Twilight Zone: The Movie” adapted four stories from the original show ... and featured Carol Serling as one of the passengers in “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.” She says she’s pleased to oversee the “Twilight Zone” brand now, “to the extent I can, of course. I give a general consultation and I’ve read all the scripts, and I’m very

much in favor of what I’ve seen so far.” She’s also in favor of Peele’s involvement, “absolutely. There couldn’t have been a better (choice). Though he hesitated for a while, I’m so glad he decided to narrate this. I really feel the narration of these stories is very important.” Rod Serling always deemed himself a writer first and foremost — borne out not only by his authoring of 92 “Twilight Zone” episodes, two of which earned Emmy Awards, but also by such scripts as his Emmy-winning “Patterns” and “Requiem for a Heavyweight.” Carol Serling believes that for “The Twilight Zone” still to be ongoing, “Rod would be the most surprised. But after all these years, the subject matter is still timely.”
