Granik cuts own path BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

CANNES, France — Born in Massachusetts, raised outside Washington D.C. and a resident of New York, director Debra Granik has lived a film-making life more intrepid than her own. Her films, fictional and documentary, have taken place in upstate New York, rural Missouri and, now, the Oregon woods. “I come from what they call the land of nowhere. I’m from the suburbs,” said Granik in recent interview. “It’s extremely atomizing. So your search is: I’m born on this very narrow path. You have to knock on the door like a nerdy documentary filmmaker. What’s it like to be on your path? Can I be there for a minute?” There are paths figurative and literal in Granik’s latest, “Leave No Trace” (not currently in local theaters). It’s about a survivalist father (Ben Foster), an Army veteran with posttraumatic stress disorder and his teenage daughter (the New Zealand-born newcomer Thomasin McKenzie). They live off the grid in a nature preserve outside Portland, foraging off the land in an isolated idyll. But their shelter is discovered by authorities, and they’re forced reluctantly into a more conventional life. “Leave No Trace,” which opens Friday, was a hit at both the Sundance and Cannes film festivals, where Granik last month joined a reporter in a beachside tent alongside Foster and McKenzie. The film has been met with similar raves as Granik’s previous fiction film, the Oscar-nominated Ozarks drama “Winter’s Bone,” which was the world’s introduction to Jennifer Lawrence.

“Winter’s Bone” was also a breakthrough for Granik, but one she didn’t seek to capitalize on the way some filmmakers might. In the eight years since, Granik has made only one other feature: The outstanding, stereotype-busting 2015 documentary “Stray Dog,” about a burly, Harley-riding Vietnam vet she met, and cast, while making “Winter’s Bone” in Missouri. Granik has instead carved her own unique path in an industry that has come under criticism for consistently overlooking female directors for the biggest productions. But blockbusters aren’t what the resolutely indie 55-yearold filmmaker wants. “It’s not the sexual time’sup. It’s the financial time’sup, and not even ‘pay me,’” said Granik. “It’s: The movies don’t have to be so big and bloated. Bring down the bloat, the behemoth. It can be lighter.” So amid the cacophony of summer movies, in between dinosaurs and superheroes, is the tender and earthy “Leave No Trace,” a movie about eking out a humble, quiet life on the edges of crowded, commercial society — right where Granik thrives. “People that need a high kill ratio don’t have to come. It’s OK because we didn’t borrow so much money to make this,” Granik said. “If they want to see an American who’s working hard to keep his nobility intact and his daughter who’s really trying to understand him and figure out her life trajectory, then they can come and rap with us. Some people have to remain at the margin so that some of the offerings are about the margin.” “Leave No Trace,” adapted from Peter Rock’s 2007 novel “My Abandonment,”

was shot in and around Portland. Foster and McKenzie participated in pre-production wilderness survival training, which doubled as their rehearsal. Instead of work-shopping their dialogue, they learned about making fires, building shelters, eating mushrooms and working with knives. Cast over Skype, it was the first time McKenzie, 17, was in the United States since she was 6-years-old. The acclaim for her performance in “Leave No Trace,” along with a few high-profile upcoming projects (Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit,” ‘’The King” opposite Timothee Chalamet) has led to JLaw-like breakthrough chatter for the young actress. McKenzie brought her own ways of preparing for a scene. “We did a traditional Maori greeting touching noses and foreheads, being comfortable and intimate and not embarrassed about it,” said McKenzie. “My mum’s an acting coach and she’s got a technique called ‘hug to connect.’ So we would just hug each other for a minute or two to get into the rhythm of each other’s breath and heartbeat.” Foster, the intense 37year-old actor of “Hell or High Water” and “The Messenger,” is also a city dweller in New York. But he vividly described how trees have always been “medicinal to me” by recalling a spiritual experience he once had lying beneath a fallen Redwood. While making “Leave No Trace,” That “Leave No Trace” was such a personal experience for both actors is a testament to Granik as a filmmaker. And the film — character-based, off-thebeaten-path — reflects Granik, herself.

There’s an oppressive bleakness to the brutal action-thriller “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.” But with faces like Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro, what are you going to do? Amid the dust cloud of violence that settles over the “Sicario” sequel, nothing stands out like the furrowed brow of Brolin’s grimace or the cold, worn-out stare of del Toro. They look like gunslingers from an Anthony Mann or Sam Peckinpah western, just with heavier ammo and dark sunglasses. With such sunken, world-weary eyes, in the heyday of film noir del Toro and Brolin would have made a killing. They do plenty of that, too, in “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.” Matt Graver (Brolin) and his cartel lawyer turned undercover pal Alejandro Gillick (del Toro) are again called into action in a black-ops operation along the Mexico border, this time without the benefit of Emily Blunt, who starred in Denis Villeneuve’s “Sicario” (2015). Blunt played a less experienced FBI agent with the naivety to be horrified by things that Graver and Gillick wouldn’t bat an eye at — you know, sissy stuff like dozens of decaying corpses stuffed like insulation into a Mexican cartel safe house. No, Graver and just-as-grave Gillick have seen it all. And Blunt’s absence leaves “Day of Soldado” without the mounting sense of dread that defined the first one. It also lacks the muscular camera work of Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins. With such missing talent, it would be easy to view “Day of the Soldado” as a

cheaper knockoff. Easier, still, considering the movie’s poster — of a guntoting skeleton draped in a flag — most resembles a Guns N’ Roses album cover. It’s better than that, but not by much. Stefano Sollima (“Gomorrah”) steps in to direct a script by Taylor Sheridan, whose neo-westerns (“Hell or High Water,” “Wind River”) have made him the genre’s best new hope. Sheridan wrote “Sicario,” too, which sought to modernize the drug-war thriller to catch it up to the lethal battles of today’s cartels. But in its ballet of SUVS sweeping across the border, “Sicario” mostly stood for a ruthless, borderless American power equaling the ultra-violence of a new era, with all the moral doubt that accompanies such a fight. “Day of the Soldado” begins with a similar stab at political relevance. A supermarket in Kansas City is attacked by a swarm of suicide bombers, the last of whom we watch detonate his vest just as a mother and child are trying to tiptoe past. Sheridan and Sollima could easily defend the imagery: This is indeed a not uncommon happening. But it’s a sensationalist way to show it. Is there anyone left who doesn’t understand the horror of terrorism? It’s believed the bombers were jihadis who infiltrated the country by slipping through the Mexican border. Told that the cartels control the trafficking of migrants over the border, the Secretary of Defense (Matthew Modine) opts to clandestinely prompt a war between two cartels. Graver’s plan is to kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a cartel kingpin to kick-

start the war. “There are no rules this time,” Graver tells Gillick, even if it’s unclear how much Graver ever heeded the rules in the first place. Where “Day of the Soldado” most succeeds is in the blur or maybe altogether disintegration of American altruism in a heinous fight. In one scene, Gillick switches from kidnapper to DEA agent by unhurriedly slipping on a government jacket, but not changing gun or even his seat. Things go from dark to darker still, as “Day of the Soldado” sets its genre tale against the backdrop of Mexican migrants in a way that sometimes feels topical and sometimes exploitive. As grim as the world of “Sicario” is — and Sollima and Sheridan really wants us to know just how grim it is — there’s also a sentimental stab at redemption by way of the kingpin daughter (played by a very good Isabela Moner), who ends up in a desert trek with Gillick. Still, there’s a mean potency to the borderland noir of both “Sicario” films, enough that it sometimes recalls another tale of explosions and drug enforcement agents on both sides of the border: Orson Welles’ “Touch of Evil.” “Day of the Soldado” is too sober and grim for the sweaty heat of “Touch of Evil.” But it has taken to heart one of its best lines: “All border towns bring out the worst in a country.” “Sicario: Day of Soldado,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “strong violence, bloody images, and language.” Running time: 123 minutes. ‘Please Don’t Be Dead’

Fantastic Negrito has an incredible, inspiring backstory but it would be a shame to unwittingly allow it to overshadow the issue at hand, the truly fantastic blend of blues, funk, rock and R&B created on “Please Don’t Be Dead” by the man born Xavier Dphrepaulezz. As Negrito’s songs feed on his personal experiences, you should at least know that he grew up with 13 siblings in a Muslim family which moved from Massachusetts to Oakland when he was 12, around 1980. He released an album (“The X Factor”) as Xavier in 1996 but a debilitating car crash in 2000 — the theme of this album’s cover — contributed to a prolonged interval. The debut of this new career phase was the 2014 EP “Fantastic Negrito” and “The Last Days of Oakland,” which won the Grammy for best contemporary blues album last year. “Please Don’t Be Dead” pulverizes any fears of the dreaded sophomore slump. If album opener “Plastic Hamburgers” sounds like a Chris Cornell/Lenny Kravitz mashup, “Dark Windows” is a heartfelt tribute to the former, whom Negrito toured with extensively. “A Boy Named Andrew” alternates a Middle Eastern-sounding motif with R&B, while “Transgender Biscuits” has Tom Waits-like bullhorn vocals as well as a small oasis of pop sounds. “Bad Guy Necessity” sounds like Al Green as the Hulk, all hurt bravado and aggression. “The Suit That Won’t Come Off” and “A Cold November Street” are the most traditionally bluesy tracks, though each has twists. “Never Give Up” is brief and Prince-like, with a choir of overdubbed Negritos and “Bull—— Anthem” is deep funk with multiple personalities. Negrito puts himself in the middle of the fray with “Please Don’t Be Dead” — such a contemporary title — and offers his songs for the soundtrack of the lives of those who won’t give up and are willing to carry on. — By Pablo Gorondi The Associated Press

It’s been a hell of a year so far for fans of doom metal, the Black Sabbath-worshipping style favored for its ominous themes, crawling tempos and down-tuned guitars. Bay Area stoner titans Sleep released (on 4/20, of course) their first full-length album in 15 years, filling a headbanger vacuum that sent “The Sciences” improbably to the Top 10 of Billboard’s rock charts. Now comes the return of underground heroes YOB, the Pacific Northwest trio able to swing effort-

lessly between menacing distortion and hushed reverie. Head YOB Mike Scheidt is back to full, howling strength after recovering from surgery for a debilitating intestinal disease. The brush with death has left him more reflective than usual on their eighth album, “Our Raw Heart,” and less concerned by perceived genre rules. The crunching, repetitive riff that anchors “The Screen” is manna for metal purists. But on songs like the soaring title track and the 17-minute meditation “Beauty In Falling Leaves,” the heaviness comes not just from big guitars but from a creeping tension that bolsters Scheidt’s passionate and wide-ranging vocals. “All

The title track of Xavier Rudd’s latest album was inspired by a pelican he saw while sitting by a river sipping tea. The water bird reminded him of Mr. Percival, a winged and feathered co-star of “Storm Boy,” a 1976 film about a young boy’s adventures in an isolated region of Australia, including his friendship with an Aboriginal man and the learning of some of life’s unavoidable lessons. Rudd’s “Storm Boy” is not a soundtrack to the eponymous film but, except for some deeply personal and romantic songs, its themes seem to match — the environment, self-knowledge and self-belief, materialism, links between history and now, reconciliation, the joys of living and the twists of fate. Musically, Rudd fits effortlessly into the contemporary singer-songwriter vernacular — some acoustic sounds, some strings, some reggae beats, plenty of soaring choruses. And a didgeridoo and ample earnestness. At his best, he sounds a little like Tim Finn. Opener “Walk Away” has a prime example of the soaring chorus, while “Fly Me High” is about being in Peru, a vision of his future wife and a butterfly sitting on his feet while in the Amazon rainforest. “Best That I Can” mentions Mother Teresa and current affairs and “Times Like These” waxes philosophical: “I believe we can breathe in the magic of our Earth/And I believe we can exhale anything we feel we didn’t deserve.” Rudd has the ability to integrate each of the songs into a single flow, like a river winding through varied landscapes. The journey on “Storm Boy” has plenty of captivating tunes and if sometimes it feels a tad long as the 13 songs stream by, Rudd’s personality and musicianship make for amiable travelling companions. — By Pablo Gorondi The Associated Press

NBA greats go geriatric in formulaic ‘Uncle Drew’ BY JOCELYN NOVECK The Associated Press

For a few shining minutes, “Uncle Drew” is the movie it surely intended to be: Funny and clever, quick and snappy, and most of all, fun — all infused with love for the great sport of basketball. Unfortunately, those minutes come during the closing credits, a sequence entertaining enough to be its own viral video.

But wait — that’s what “Uncle Drew” originally was, anyway: A series of web videos from a Pepsi ad campaign starring NBA great Kyrie Irving as a white-haired senior citizen who shows up on a playground court and blows all the “youngblood” hotshots away. Combining Irving’s talent with the satisfying element of age trumping youthful hubris, they couldn’t lose. It’s perhaps not surprising that someone sought to make it into a full-length movie — and why not? Alas, the resulting film, made in association with Pepsi and directed by Charles Stone III, falls into a disappointingly formulaic lull for large stretches, squeezing all spontaneity from the proceedings. Don’t fault the talented cast, which includes a squad of hard-working NBA luminaries in heavy aging makeup, and comedy stars including the delight-

ful Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery, so memorable in “Get Out.” Fault the unimaginative script they’ve been given. The premise: Dax (Howery), is a downtrodden Foot Locker employee trying to make a buck. As a teen, he was a talented player, but quit altogether when he missed a crucial game-winning shot, and lost his nerve. He’s also an orphan, who never had a sense of family. (Can you start writing the ending of the script right now? Of course.) Dax is also an amateur coach hustling to get a team ready for a tournament at Harlem’s storied Rucker Park (where many NBA greats have played), and win a hefty cash prize. But his nemesis, Mookie,

has different ideas. Mookie — a nasty-funny Nick Kroll, more nasty than funny here — steals Dax’s team from under him, including his young star Casper (Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic.) It hardly comes as a surprise when Mookie steals Jess, Dax’s girlfriend, too. Jess (an underused Haddish) boots Dax from their apartment, and when he hits the street with a suitcase, she calls him back: she needs the suitcase. He re-emerges with a garbage bag. Ouch. Locals at the barber shop suggest Dax, now teamless, go find Uncle Drew. And the old man agrees to play — on condition that he choose his own teammates. Road trip! The two set out to gather up a team of Drew’s old

cohorts — emphasis on old. Dax is initially uncertain, but as Drew likes to say: “You don’t stop playing because you get old. You get old because you stop playing.” First stop: the Preacher, aka Chris Webber, hamming it up quite impressively as an actual preacher who sounds something like James Brown. Preacher says yes, but his wife, Betty Lou (WNBA great Lisa Leslie) is not happy; as her guy makes a getaway in Drew’s van, she follows with a baseball bat. (The women in the film, unfortunately, are often either angry, batty, or mere eye candy. At least Leslie will eventually get to show her stuff.) The group then recruits Lights (Reggie Miller); the

joke is that he’s legally blind, but believes in his ability to hit any shot. At an old-age home, they bring in Boots (Nate Robinson), who’s been sitting silently in a wheelchair for years. But he only needs one thing to cure all that. Do we need to tell you what it is? Finally, we get to towering Shaquille O’Neal, game as always. Shaq’s Big Fella, now a Kung Fu instructor, has an axe to grind against Drew, who will have to address this and other emotional issues if this underdog team will ever coalesce enough to win. Teamwork. Friendship. Family. Playing for the game’s sake, not money. All these themes come together in a warm-heart-

ed but highly predictable way. It’s undeniably fun to watch these guys do their thing under gallons of makeup, and the promising Lowery does what he can with the corny script — including one funny “Get Out” reference which we won’t spoil for you. As for Haddish, she’s a treasure, but has little to do here, and she’s funniest and loosest when we’re not even guaranteed to be watching: during those closing credits. Make sure to stick around. “Uncle Drew,” a Summit Entertainment release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America “for suggestive material, language and brief nudity.” Running time: 103 minutes.

NEW YORK — “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” surpassed expectations to open with $150 million in ticket sales in U.S. and Canada theaters over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, June 24. While that total didn’t approach the record-breaking $208.8 million debut of 2015’s “Jurassic World,” it proved the 25year-old franchise still roars loudly among moviegoers. It also gave Hollywood its first back-toback $100 million-plus openings in a nonholiday period. After opening with $182.7 million last week, Pixar’s acclaimed sequel “Incredibles 2” slid 56 percent in its second week, with an $80.9 million haul. The combined firepower of “Fallen Kingdom” and “Incredibles 2” fueled $280 million in total ticket sales, making it Hollywood’s fourth-biggest overall weekend ever, not accounting for inflation. Business was roughly double what it was the same June weekend last year, according to comScore. “The normal course of box office is that the two films would cannibalize each other’s box office in some way,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. “This weekend proves that if you have two incredibly appealing movies in the marketplace at the same time, the

marketplace will expand. The year-to-date box office jumped 2.5 percent in one weekend, from 6 percent to 8.5 percent.” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” has already tallied hundreds of millions in overseas ticket sales over the past two weeks. Its worldwide total already stands at $711.5 million. The film, starring Chris Pratt and Dallas Bryce Howard, moves the action away from an isolated tropical island. In “Fallen Kingdom,” directed by J.A. Bayona, the dinosaurs are again threatened with extinction because of a soon-to-explode volcano. But they are trapped by a band of mercenaries, a plot intended to mirror real-life animal poaching . Like 2015’s “Jurassic World,” ‘’Fallen Kingdom” was able to shrug off mediocre reviews — something that many other franchises have struggled to do lately. It sits at just 50 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes but received an A-minus CinemaScore from audiences. Universal Pictures, which is planning a third “Jurassic World” film, heavily promoted the $170 million production. Drawing audiences equally young and old, male and female, and from a diverse array of ethnicities, “Fallen Kingdom” played like a classic crowd-pleaser. The domestic opening is the second-best for the 106-year-old Universal.
