In Hollywoodâ&#x20AC;? finished a distant second with $40 million in its opening weekend for Sony, but it bested the 2009 opening of Tarantinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inglourious Basterdsâ&#x20AC;? by $2 some million and made a strong showing for an R-rated, nearly-three-hour film that was not a sequel or remake and was aimed solely at adults. The film with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as denizens of a 1969 Los Angeles where old Hollywood was fading and the Manson family was rising was more star-powered than Tarantinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous eight movies, though the director himself was as big a draw as anyone.

Disneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s photorealistic remake of the Hamlet-themed tale of Mufasa, Simba and Nala, featuring the voices of Donald Glover and Beyonce, brought in $75 million in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday. Its domestic total of $350 million makes it the yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth highest-grossing film after just 10 days

‘We Get By’ Anti-Records

Time has certainly not dampened the urgency in Mavis Staples’ voice. Now 80, the Grammy-winning legend and social activist has one clear enemy on her new album: the status quo. She sings the word “change” some 20 times. The terrific “We Get By” opens with the song “Change” and ends 10 tracks later with “One More Change to Make.” Along the way, she urges action: “Can’t stay the same,” ‘’Something’s got to give” and “Grab hold of the days.” All the songs on this, her 12th studio album, were written by Ben Harper and their union is both fruitful and moving. Harper has given Staples some tunes that show off her vulnerable side and others that make you move, with some funk and folk and soul and blues, the guitars often shimmering. He joins her in singing the dynamic, soulful “We Get By.” The Staples-Harper collaboration dates back to when he wrote the terrific song “Love and Trust” for her 2016 album, “Livin’ On a High Note.” She thanks him for all his new work in the liner notes: “I love you, Baby Bruh.” He has three Grammys, but Harper might put that career achievement first. Harper has written and produced an unrushed and quietly brooding album for Staples, one that puts her expressive voice at the center and the instruments turned down. Two songs — “Never Needed Anyone” and “Heavy On My Mind” — sound like the band was another room down the hall. In between calls for change, Staples sings about love. On “Chance on Me,” she is needy: “I don’t need a symphony/I just need one violin.” On the tender, bluesy “Hard to Leave,” she’s longing: “Softly reaching over/For your touch upon my sleeve.” Then there’s the standout “Stronger,” an irresistible rocking track where Staples’ voice stretches and soars and the guitar keeps up with her. “Don’t need a house on the hill/Don’t need my face on a dollar bill,” she sings. Now that’s an idea. Staples may not need her face on our money, but perhaps it’s the least we can do to thank

‘Living Mirage’ Warner Bros. Records

On the heels of bands like the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons, the Head and the Heart arrived into the folk-rock scene at just the right time. Their self-titled debut — self-released in 2009 and later released by record label Sub Pop in 2011 — resonated with fans who delighted in their organic sound. From the tight harmonies to sparse production, the album was vulnerable and pure. Fast-forward 10 years and the Head and the Heart have headed down a different path entirely. Fans looking for the folksy rock they fell in love with will be disappointed by the clean, heavily produced fourth record, “Living Mirage.” The album contains only a glimmer of the magic held within the Head and

the Heart’s first two albums. The band’s third release, “Signs of Light,” hinted at the group’s transition toward pop, but it isn’t until the first two songs of “Living Mirage” that this identity shift is fully realized. Those tracks — “See You Through My Eyes” and “Missed Connection” — are arguably the album’s weakest. Gone are the idiosyncrasies that colored the group’s early work. The rough edges of Jonathan Russell and Charity Rose Thielen’s voices have been polished to perfection, and with them, the texture and charm eradicated. The Head and the Heart are the strongest with songs like “Glory of Music,” where the production is stripped back and the raw vocals shine through. The title track is a breath of fresh air as the harmonica trickles in and Russell croons, “When I give in to you/Every word that you say rings true.” The album has some other moments of brilliance, but they seem fleeting or lost among a collection of songs that don’t hold the same weight as the past work of the band.

For a young singer as prodigiously gifted as Lise Davidsen, there’s always a danger she’ll be pressured into taking on too much too soon. Judging from the Norwegian soprano’s first solo album, she’s steering clear of that pitfall. Only 32, Davidsen is being hailed as the next great Wagnerian soprano because of her clarion, multi-colored voice with its seemingly unlimited capacity to soar over heavy orchestration. The twin peaks of that repertory — Isolde and Br˘nnhilde — surely await her, yet on this album she has wisely chosen only works she’s already performed onstage. There are just two Wagner excerpts: Elisabeth’s arias from “Tannh—user,” the opera that will serve for her debut this summer at the composer’s shrine in Bayreuth, Germany. Dramatically, the pieces couldn’t be more different. In “Dich teure Halle,” the heroine’s exuberant greeting to the Hall of Song, Davidsen caps the conclusion with a ringing high B natural. The second aria, “Allm—cht’ge Jungfrau,” is a somber prayer at the point of death, and Davidsen sings it with restraint, though her gleaming tone once or twice threatens to overpower the muted accompaniment. Richard Strauss’ opera “Ariadne auf Naxos” has served as Davidsen’s calling card in the last few years, and she delivers thrills in the wide-ranging vocal line of the title character’s aria, “Es gibt ein Reich.” Strauss is also the composer of the remaining offerings on the album, primarily two sets of songs representing his early maturity and the end of his career. The four pieces of Opus 27 from 1894 were wedding gifts for his wife, soprano Pauline de Ahna. Davidsen shows her versatility here, meeting the operatic demands of “C—cilie” with ease and then scaling down her voice to suit the delicate texture of “Morgen!” The album ends with the elegiac “Four Last Songs” from 1948, just a year before the composer’s death at age 85. While more experienced sopranos have perhaps brought greater interpretive depth to these songs, the purity and flexibility of Davidsen’s voice carry the day here. — By Mike Silverman, The Associated Press

Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ to premiere at NY Film Fest BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Martin Scorsese’s big-budget mafia epic “The Irishman” will premiere as the opening night film at the 57th New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced Monday. The selection, with the premiere set for September 27, gives Scorsese a hometown launch for one of his most anticipated films. “The Irishman” is Scorsese’s $125 million Netflix film about the reflections of a former Jimmy Hoffa associate and hit man. Its genre and cast — including Robert De Niro as Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa and Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino — have long tantalized fans of the 76-yearold filmmaker. “It’s in the milieu of the pictures we’ve done together and are known for, in a sense, but I hope from a different vantage point,” Scorsese said earlier this year at a Tribeca Film Festival event. “Years have gone by and we see things in a special way, I hope.” New York Film Festival Director Kent Jones, a frequent collaborator with Scorsese, said in a statement that “The Irishman” is “the work of masters, made with a command of the art of cinema that I’ve seen very rarely in my lifetime, and it plays out at a level of subtlety and human intimacy that truly stunned me.” Netflix is planning a robust awards season push for “The Irishman,” including a not-yet-dated

release in select theaters later this year. How widely Netflix will release it remains to be seen; major theater chains have thus far refused to play films that don’t adhere to a traditional exclusive theatrical release window of 90 days. Netflix has said holding movies back from its streaming service doesn’t serve its subscribers. In an interview with The Associated Press in June , Scorsese said Netflix was the only one willing to bankroll the ambitious film, based on Charles Brandt’s “I Heard You Paint Houses.” “No one else did. No one else did,” said Scorsese, who also turned to Netflix for his Bob Dylan documentary “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.” ‘’We decided to make it with the understanding that it’ll maybe never be shown in theaters. They said, ‘You would have a time in theaters’ — a few weeks or whatever. I said fine. The idea was to make the movie, you see.” Scorsese has also lamented the major studios’ reliance on blockbusters. “I don’t do those,” said Scorsese. “There’s only so much time in your life. I need to make these movies. I just need to. So where do I go?” The filmmaker on Monday said he was grateful for the New York Film Festival selection (his first as the opening night film) and praised the festival as “critical to bringing awareness to cinema from around the world.” The New York Film Festival runs September 27 through October 13.

TV MIRROR The sequel series “BH90210” premieres Wednesday on Fox.

Most of the familiar faces of “Beverly Hills, 90210” are back together, but not in the “90210” you may remember. The notion of a series revival — which that show actually has had already — gets turned on its head as the franchise returns to Fox with “BH90210,” premiering Wednesday, Aug. 7. Original stars and close friends Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling helped devise the concept of what might happen if the cast attempted to bring back “90210,” so they play fictionalized versions of themselves ... as do Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris and Brian Austin Green.

Garth reprised her Kelly Taylor role in The CW’s 2008-13 “90210” reboot, and she says making “BH90210” has been “a crazy journey and evolution, but we’ve managed to keep everybody going in the same direction, which is incredible to me. I wasn’t intrigued about doing something that had already been done, but this is something that’s a little fresh, marrying different things into the best of all possible worlds.” Priestley, who’s given a wife other than his real-life one in the show (a publicist played by Vanessa Lachey), admits he thought “BH90210” was “the craziest idea I’d ever heard” at first. “Then we all started sitting around and really talking

seriously about it, and I think what we all came to is something really original that people will find entertaining.” The late Luke Perry might have appeared on “BH90210” had his “Riverdale” schedule enabled it. “It’s not easy,” Garth allows of making the new show without him. “His picture is up in the makeup trailer, and he’s in my thoughts. I can’t explain it, but he’s with me and with the show on a level that is undeniable.” Adds Priestley, “Luke was a big part of my life and of our ‘90210’ family, and his absence leaves a big vacancy. And we all feel it, every day.” For Garth, “BH90210” holds to her being admittedly choosy about what she does professionally

and who she does it with: “I don’t really like working, and I’m very selective about who I spend my time with when I have to be away from my family. Tori and I realized we wanted to work together again and produce together, so we set out on a mission, and this is our second foray into that world (after the short-lived sitcom ‘Mystery Girls’).” The appeal of seeing “a bunch of middle-aged actors who aren’t the youngsters they were on their hit show in the ‘90s” is noted by Priestley, who also has directed the third “BH90210” episode. “And let’s make it a (pseudo-)reality show, and let’s make it funny. That’s what we decided to do.”
