NEW YORK (AP) — The acclaimed Pixar sequel “Incredibles 2” has passed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, making it Disney’s third film this year to cross the box-office milestone. Disney said Tuesday that Brad Bird’s summer blockbuster reached $1 billion on Monday, about

Next ‘Star Wars’ film to use unreleased Fisher footage

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Carrie Fisher is not done with “Star Wars” after all — Lucasfilm says unreleased footage of the actress will be used in the next installment of the “Star Wars” saga to draw her character’s story to an end. The studio and writerdirector J.J. Abrams announced Friday that footage of Fisher shot for 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be used in the ninth film in the space opera’s core trilogies about the Skywalker family that includes Fisher’s character, Leia. Filming is scheduled to begin Wednesday at London’s Pinewood Studios. Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, will also appear in the film, which for the moment is simply called “Episode IX.” It is scheduled to be released in December 2019. Fisher died in December 2016 after she finished work on the middle installment in the trilogy, “The Last Jedi.” Director Rian Johnson opted not to alter her storyline, leaving

Leia’s fate to be handled by Abrams. “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” Abrams said in a statement. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us.” He said recasting Fisher or recreating her using computer graphics, as was done in a spinoff film “Rogue One,” was not an option. “With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.” The announcement also confirmed that Billy Dee Williams will be returning to the franchise as Lando Calrissian, a hero of the rebellion who hasn’t been seen in the latest trilogy. ‘Mission: Impossible — Fallout’ shoots to No. 1 BY LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — After six movies, 22 years, countless bruises and a broken ankle, Tom Cruise’s death-defying “Mission: Impossible” stunts continue to pay off at the box office. “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” easily took the No. 1 spot on the domestic charts this weekend. Paramount Pictures estimates that it earned $61.5 million from 4,386 North American theaters. Not accounting for inflation, it’s a best for the long-running franchise, which has grossed $2.8 billion worldwide, and one of Cruise’s biggest too (just shy of “War of the Worlds’” $64.9 million debut in 2005). Internationally, the film earned $92 million from 36 markets which is also a franchise best. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, “Fallout” has scored some of the best reviews in the series and has been in the news cycle for almost a year. Talk about the film started early, in August of 2017, when Cruise broke his ankle performing a stunt in London with video to prove it. “Paramount was strategically perfect in their

marketing and publicity game,” said comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “They showed how important a star’s presence is in marketing the movie early on. Tom Cruise broke his ankle and they made that into a positive for the movie — it fed the Tom Cruise ‘Mission: Impossible’ mystique.” Second place went to “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” which fell 57 percent in its second weekend in theaters, to earn $15 million. It was a much steeper decline than the first film, which dropped only 36 percent between its first and second weekends. Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 2” slid to third with $14 million in weekend two, and “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” took fourth with $12.3 million. The animated “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies,” a feature spinoff of the Cartoon Network television show about Robin and some of the lesser-known DC superheroes, was the only major film to open against “Fallout.” The Warner Bros. release earned $10.5 million and landed in fifth place. The film earned positive reviews from critics and younger audiences, but

also faced a fair amount of animated competition from both “Hotel Transylvania 3” and “Incredibles 2,” which is still going strong in its seventh weekend and headed toward the $1 billion mark. As of Sunday the Disney/Pixar sequel had earned an estimated $996.5 million globally. But although $10.5 million might seem on the lower side, “Teen Titans” also cost only $10 million to produce. Stewart to lead new ‘Charlie’s Angles’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kristen Stewart is set to star in Elizabeth Banks’ reboot of “Charlie’s Angels.” Sony Pictures last week said Stewart’s fellow Angels will be played by Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska.

Banks is directing, producing, co-writing and starring as Bosley in the new incarnation of the Angels saga. Banks says in a statement that “Charlie’s Angels” is one of the original brands to celebrate the

empowered woman. The statement says this film will introduce a new era of modern and global Angels. Sony Pictures will release the new “Charlie’s Angels” in North American theaters in September 2019.

‘Out of the Blues’ Concorde Records

Sometimes with more gloss, at times with more grit, but always with great feeling, Boz Scaggs has kept some form of the blues close to the surface during most of his career, which has already sailed past the 50-year milestone. On “Out of the Blues,” the last of an informal trilogy also including “Memphis” and “A Fool to Care” revisiting his roots and influences, Scaggs covers some superior blues tunes from decades past, along with a Neil Young song and originals by long-time collaborator Jack Walroth. Unlike its two predecessors, “Out of the Blues” was produced by Scaggs instead of Steve Jordan, but some of the musicians from the earlier releases are back, including bassist Willie Weeks and guitarist Ray Parker Jr., topped up with additions including Jim Keltner (drums), Jim Cox (keys) and a leftyrighty combo of Texas six-stringers, Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton. Walroth’s “Rock and Stick” has shades of soul and Andy Summers’ echoing guitar, with Scaggs’ falsetto emphasizing the emotions, while “I’ve Just Got to Forget You” — associated with Bland — is pure regret and heartbreak. Jimmy McCracklin’s “I’ve Just Got to Know,” based here on the magnetic Magic Sam version — deals with a step earlier in the relationship, even if the writing’s on the wall. “Little Miss Night and Day,” a hardboiled rocker with solos from Cox, Bramhall and Sexton, is Scaggs’ only songwriting credit, shared with Walroth, whose grooves fit right in with the rest of the repertoire. Scaggs sounds aptly fatigued on Young’s “On the Beach,” which features great guitar work by Bramhall and a disillusionment with fame that sometimes even an everyman can emphasize with: “Though my problems are meaningless/That don’t make them go away.” The blues suit Scaggs and thankfully “The Feeling Is Gone” is just the last song on the album, not a reflection of his performances. — By Pablo Gorondi The Associated Press

‘The Tree’ CN Records via Thirty Tigers

It’s rare to read about Lori McKenna without hearing that she got married at 19 and had the first of her five children at 20. And since her latest album, “The Tree,” is a canon of songs about family, it would be easy to pigeonhole her as a mom singing sweetly about a world she knows well.That would all be true, but it shouldn’t diminish her impact. McKenna also happens to be a brilliant songwriter. On “The Tree,” she matches melody and mood to simple imagery that lets listeners see the picture she’s creating. A mother who can’t sit still, for example, is a hummingbird in a living room. A father’s billfold in church conveys greater significance than the simple image suggests. The new album follows closely on “The Bird and the Rifle,” McKenna’s 2016 gem that netted three Grammy nominations and widespread acclaim. The praise was well-deserved, but this might be a better album. Working with producer Dave Cobb, a master at getting the most out of wellcrafted songs, McKenna builds on her

reputation as a songwriter that other songwriters notice. Her singing is straight-ahead honest, her eyes fixed on the word-portrait she’s painting. In the album’s first single, “People Get Old,” a heart-rending masterpiece about aging and the passing of time, the heat is in the lyrics. “Every line on your face tells a story somebody knows,” she sings. ‘Joy’ Drag City

The ever-prolific Ty Segall reunites with White Fence (Tim Presley) on “Joy,” a freaky, fragmented album where squeaks and barks interrupt delightful harmonies and psychedelic power pop, totaling 15 tracks in just over 30 minutes. “Joy” is a slightly less frenzied follow-up to their 2012 collaboration, “Hair.” In parts, the album is like sweeter-sounding 13th Floor Elevators and the tunes could be excerpts from a rock opera for people with attention-

deficit hyperactivity disorder. Get distracted for a minute or two and whole songs may have passed you by. There’s a lot of great music on “Joy” but the interludes unnecessarily break the flow. While this album’s “Other Way” and the 17 seconds of “Prettiest Dog” are reminiscent of its predecessor’s “Crybaby” and “Scissor People” in their intensity, the duo also emphasizes the layers of Who-like vocals and plenty of acoustic guitars. “Do Your Hair” is a prime example of this approach. The psychedelic introductory, “Beginning,” has bird noises, surf-rock drums, angelic singing and guitars in stereo, while the brief “Room Connector” sounds like the instrumental demo version of a catchy song. “Body Behavior” and “Good Boy” both cross the finish line around the 2minute mark, packing a wealth of rhythms, guitars and weird lyrics. “A Nod” could be an outtake from “Tommy,” a reflective moment from the pinball wizard/spiritual leader: “My friends say I need followers/But I want to believe in me.” The lovely, heartfelt “My Friend” — “I see you falling down again/But I’m still around my friend” — is a melange of acoustic guitars and stays around long enough, nearly 4 minutes, to become one of the album’s most gratifying highlights. Billboard reports the song, which was dually promoted to country and pop radio, passed Sam Hunt’s previous powerhouse “Body Like a Back Road,” which held the record for 34 weeks in 2017. The chart encompasses streaming, sales and airplay. Written by Rexha, FGL’s Tyler Hubbard, Josh Miller and David Garcia, “Meant to Be” has peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. YRONE — Marge and Douglas Bradley of Duncansville celebrated their 42nd anniversary a day early July 8 by doing something new — experiencing a delicious buffet and top-notch entertainment at The Iron Bridge Dinner Theatre. “We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and plan to go back,” Marge Bradley said. “We enjoyed a very delicious meal, dessert and beverage. The performance (of ‘Newsies’) was outstanding. I can’t say enough positive things about the whole evening. The (actors) were so professional, enthusiastic and flawless. They were extremely well-rehearsed.” Theater owner Drew Baker of Tyrone serves as the artistic director for the Iron Bridge, so named for its proximity to the bridge linking Grazierville and Tyrone. Denzel Washington kills in ‘The Equalizer 2’ BY MARK KENNEDY The Associated Press

You won’t usually find Denzel Washington in a movie sequel. He just doesn’t do them. Something about not wanting to repeat himself. So there must be something special indeed for him to break his own rule for “The Equalizer 2.”

Fans of the first film will instantly know why Washington is drawn to the character of Robert McCall, a quiet middle-aged retired special-ops agent who fiercely believes in justice, likes to help others and dispenses the occasional lethal killing for those deserving. “The Equalizer 2” reconnects many of the people behind the 2014 debut alongside the always-vital Washington — Antoine Fuqua returns to direct, as does writer Richard Wenk, and actors Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo. McCall first appeared in the mid-1980s on TV with Edward Woodward playing him as a bit of an English dandy. In the film series, Washington plays McCall as a tad obsessive-compulsive, but not consistently. He’s the kind of guy who brings his own tea bag to a restaurant in a neatly folded napkin and arranges the cutlery just so. But, when prompted, his vision sud-

denly becomes hyper-clear and he meticulously preplans every step in taking down a room of thugs, often without a gun. He’s like Monk crossed with Sherlock Holmes. The second film takes place sometime after the first, with McCall now a Lyft driver, selectively helping people he encounters. He’s kind to old people (a Holocaust survivor, for extra depth) and little kids, who adore him. He mentors a troubled teen (Ashton Sanders), hoping to steer him away from drug dealing and toward art school. Few people could pull off this cheesy sainthood like Washington, oozing charisma and self-assured masculinity. When a group of smarmy, cocky Wall Street types abuse an intern during a coke-fueled party, Washington drives her to the hospital and then returns to wreck vengeance, slicing one dude with his own luxury credit card and then taunting his bleeding victims with “I expect a five-star rating.” It takes him a scant 29 seconds to destroy the room full of rich snobs; he times it, naturally. The film somewhat confusingly toggles through various initial threads before landing on the main one — someone crucial to McCall’s murky past is murdered in Brussels and that reveals a barrel of bad government apples. The film thus strays far from its roots as a vehicle for McCall to be the avenging angel for a needy stranger. But we get to see McCall solve the crime from his Boston apartment by putting himself in the crime scene like an episode of “Crossing Jordan” and then avenge the death. Oh,

there’s also a hurricane crashing up the East coast, timed for the climax, a little over the top if we’re being honest. Fuqua is a lyrical director who directed Washington to an Oscar in “Training Day.” He’s not afraid to spend time in the still darkness with McCall and likes to focus on small moody elements, like rain hitting the gutters. But he can also deliver red meat: A sequence in which McCall fights off a passenger in the back seat of his car is a mini-masterpiece of taut, sinewy direction. Wenk also has written some juicy dialogue for Washington, including a monologue about individual responsibility he delivers to the young artist in a project stairwell that the actor bites into with obvious relish. (It’s only somewhat marred by the cliché of him putting a gun muzzle to his own temple and goading the younger man to pull the trigger. “Five pounds of pressure is all it takes!” he says.) “The Equalizer” is a guilty pleasure for anyone who enjoys that old-school, blue-collar American chivalric hero with a dark past. The one who was in “The Quiet Man” and behind the mask in Batman. He’s the kind of guy who cauterizes his own wounds, never permits collateral damage when he’s on a killing spree, wears a knit polo to a showdown with four heavily armed tactical fighters, and reads great books of literature to honor his beloved dead wife. He’s cool, with moral clarity and he’s three moves ahead of everyone. No wonder he’s such a welcome sight in 2018 America and no wonder Washington

From the get-go, “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” a Kate McKinnonMila Kunis buddy spy comedy, has two things going for it. First, female spies are clearly in vogue, if you’ve been reading the news — or if you prefer your spies to be fictional, may we recommend Keri Russell’s recently departed Elizabeth Jennings on “The Americans”?

More importantly, the film has McKinnon, whose comedic brilliance on “Saturday Night Live” has yet to find the perfect bigscreen vehicle. It will, one day, but this movie isn’t it. Still, her presence gives the film — an often entertaining but chaotically uneven experience — its energy and spark. The main problem with “The Spy Who Dumped Me” is its strange dissonance of tone. There’s nothing wrong with trying to be a hard-knuckle action film and a goofy comedy all at once. But here, that effort results in moments of occasionally stunning violence that simply don’t mesh with the light-hearted vibe the filmmakers seek elsewhere. Talented director Susanna Fogel (who co-wrote the script with David Iserson) clearly feels that a female action comedy doesn’t need to be short on the action, and that’s totally true. But gender issues aside, there’s action and there’s serious violence. When an appealingly kooky character gets shot in the head during a hilarious car chase, it suddenly doesn’t feel so hilarious. Likewise when someone drowns in a pot of fondue, or gets

impaled on a blade. Granted, such a balance is always tough to strike. We begin with Justin Theroux as Drew, the spy in the title, tangling with a bunch of bad guys in Lithuania, racing around on a motorcycle, leaping out of a building, that sort of thing. Who’s he fighting? Not clear. Cut back to the USA, where Audrey (Kunis), a sweet, self-effacing store clerk, is celebrating her 30th birthday and trying to forget that jerky Drew dumped her via text message. Her BFF Morgan (McKinnon), who is NOT selfeffacing, convinces her to burn the stuff he left at her house. That threat gets Drew’s attention: He shows up, looking for the stuff, and soon is apparently shot dead in front of Audrey. She’s

just conveniently learned he’s CIA — Audrey thought he worked at NPR. Anyway, Audrey learns this news from a pair of agents who abduct her, briefly. One of them, Duffer, is an insufferable Harvard alum (Hasan Minhaj) who’s incapable of uttering a sentence without the word “Harvard” in it. The other, Sebastian (Sam Heughan), is a hunky but soulful Brit whose allegiance is murky, but might as well be wearing a T-shirt saying “Love Interest.” So, how do Audrey and Morgan — whose last name is Freeman, by the way — become a dynamic duo of globe-trotting, butt-kicking spies? Well, turns out everyone’s after a cheap fantasy football trophy, inside of which is a very important USB drive. Audrey’s

task is to bring this drive to Vienna and into the right hands. The adventure — often bloody — takes Audrey and Morgan to a series of scenic European capitals. The funniest scenes, not surprisingly, have nothing to do with complex stunts or violence, but simple laughs, as when the two women hijack a car from an elderly couple, but realize it’s a stick shift and slowly inch it down the street before just handing it back. Also funny: When Morgan, during a high-speed car chase, suggests to Audrey that it’s self-defeating to use the turn signal. Here’s what’s not so funny: when the women have to hide a USB drive, they hide it — well, you know where. Middle-school level anatomy jokes ensue. Yawn!

The cast is often delightful, from Jane Curtin and Paul Reiser as Morgan’s parents back home, to a deliciously dry Gillian Anderson as a harried British spy chief. It all comes down to an actionpacked showdown at a black-tie gala in Berlin, where McKinnon gets to indulge her inner trapeze artist. She makes the most of it, but even better are totally silly moments like when she poses as an airport chauffeur in Berlin and decides to sport an English Cockney accent — just because. Speaking of Morgan, one of the film’s less believable moments is when we learn she was deeply insulted when Drew called her “a little much.” Isn’t that the whole point — both for Morgan, and for McKinnon?

hich movie did some of ABC’s “Castaways” run across just before they went to their islands?

The Tom Hanks drama “Cast Away.” Really. That film is echoed by circumstances in the unscripted series premiering Tuesday, Aug. 7. Less a competition than “Survivor,” the show lands 12 age-ranging individuals in an Indonesian paradise separately, leaving them on their own unless or until they encounter the others. As their back stories are told via flashbacks, they choose to wait for rescue or quit as they use the limited resources at hand. “For as long as I can remember, everyone’s

asked the question, ‘What would you do if you were stranded on a deserted island?,’ ” says “Castaways” showrunner Grant Kahler, formerly an executive producer of the similarly themed “Alone” for History. “It was sometimes hard to explain to (the participants) that an extreme situation like this may provide clarity in their everyday lives back home. I don’t know that anyone thought it would be as intense as it actually was. I think it was a shock to their systems, for sure, but they loved every minute of it.” The first castaway viewers meet is Robbie Gibbons, a food-addicted, then-seriously overweight gym teacher from Birmingham, Ala. “Be-

fore I was dropped in the ocean,” he recalls for this story, “and had to swim a mile to my little cove, I had to spend two days in a hotel room while they were getting everyone in. There was a TV, and every channel was in the language of Indonesia except for two that spoke English. One had a soccer game; the other had ‘Cast Away,’ no lie. And I watched it from start to finish.” Aspiring Nashville-based country-music artist Kenzi Whittington is the first fellow castaway Gibbons makes contact with. “No one coached me on whether I should turn right or turn left or get in the water or whatever,” he says. “I could have just sat there the whole time, and I

chose to make a move — and all of a sudden, I crossed paths with Kenzi. And thank goodness. Being so alone, and not being a survivalist, I wasn’t prepared for any of it.” Whittington maintains “it’s so funny” to look back at her “Castaways” tenure now: “It was really confusing, because I was in such a beautiful place and I felt so awful physically there. I wondered if it was worth it, and now that I’m back in my everyday routine, I think it was so worth it. What a life-changing thing. It’s crazy to see familiar faces and things like starting a fire, and it’s almost like I’m reliving it. It’s really emotional for me to watch the footage.”
