Magic is one of the themes of “The Secret,” Alan Parsons’ latest project, and it is best represented by the instrumental opening tune, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” Its many moods over nearly six minutes are like an orchestrated soundtrack to a ‘60s animated Disney film or a magician’s stage act, with Steve Hackett, Nathan East and Vinnie Colaiuta helping to embellish Parsons’ passion. On his first solo studio album since 2004, Parsons — without longtime collaborator Eric Woolfson (who died in 2009) — is back with a familiar approach: a handful of lead vocalists, crystal, smooth sounds and pop songs with classical and progressive rock elements. Parsons recently turned 70 and won his first Grammy this year after over a dozen nominations, picking up best immersive audio album for “Eye In the Sky — 35th Anniversary Edition.” His first nomination was at the 1974 Grammys for his work as an engineer on Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon,” so it’s no surprise then that many songs on “The Secret” have autumnal lyrics dealing with the passing of time. Parsons himself sings “As Lights Fall,” which has myriad echoes of “Eye In the Sky,” and it sounds autobiographical: “My sword was cast in songs of light/In sparks and waves, enchanted nights.” Former Foreigner singer Lou Gramm takes lead on “Sometimes,” a stringdrenched highlight that sticks to the seasoned topics — “The older grow wiser/And fall in love sometimes,” while Jason Mraz sings “Miracle,” another song with precedents in the Alan Parsons Project discography. Some songs sag a bit, like “Years of Glory,” and on “Soiree Fantastique,” an otherwise charming duet between Parsons and Todd Cooper, the French pronunciation feels like a parody. Parsons didn’t tour until the mid1990s, but he is currently on an extended series of international concerts. Though he has a long list of classic tracks to choose from, adding some from “The Secret” to the set lists would

You really have to hand it to alt-rockers X Ambassadors: They’re not very pushy. This was the year they were supposed to shine but they’ve ended up helping others first. In 2019 alone they’ve contributed and produced tracks for Lizzo’s breakthrough album “Cuz I Love You” and lead singer Sam Harris co-wrote several songs for “For the Throne,” the album inspired by “Game of Thrones.” Maybe those were appetizers, getting our stomachs ready. Now the main course has arrived with “Orion,” the follow-up to their impressive 2015 debut “VHS,” with the beautiful songs “Unsteady” and “Renegades.” And it’s clear they really haven’t missed a step. From the infectious rockers “Hey Child” and “Boom” to the acoustic-andstrings heart-tugger “History,” the new album bristles with interesting songs and textures. Rising star K.Flay’s voice blends nicely with Harris’ on

“Confidence” while “Wasteland” has a sort of U2-ish vibe. Lyrics that deal with economic insecurity fuel the super mid-tempo “Quicksand” and “Rule” is a little needy smoky piano ditty. Producer Ricky Reed, who also worked on Lizzo’s album, has come in to help oversee the band’s sound and he’s cut away at some of the band’s tendency to clutter, providing guitar and bass work, too. “Orion” is a quieter album than its predecessor but allows Harris’ voice and the songwriting to shine. The album continues with the band’s tendency for confessional lyrics, especially on “I Don’t Know How to Pray,” which has Harris on his knees in a bathroom fumbling a plea to heaven. That song fragment ends with a taped snippet of him spontaneously chatting with his brother, Casey, the band’s keyboardist. It’s hard to get more intimate than this. After a strong first half, “Orion” drops off somewhat, with “Shadow” and “Recover” merely treading water. The band pulls it together in time to deliver a final blistering tune, “Hold You Down,” an earworm of synth hand-

On her fifth solo album, Welsh eccentric performer Cate Le Bon continues to expand her own enchanted musical realm. “Reward” is a touch more direct than past releases but shares the same subversive grace. The record’s first line — “decorate the new discord” — acts not only as a motif but speaks to the subtle depth that lies within. From there, a subdued saxophone flirts with a flared synth and Le Bon’s pillow-y harmonies. Her voice is both expressive and airy and her accent accentuated when she sings. On “The Light,” Le Bon discloses “I don’t need the poetry” but her introspection doesn’t agree. Even when just “mouthing the words” about “halfused” intentions, a state of “occasional bloom” is depicted. At times she seems impenetrable, at others an aching vulnerability is revealed — at one point determining: “I’m a cross hair.” The intricate hooks also reveal themselves gradually, popping out of nowhere or unfurling deceptively. A distinct sense of place and universality are both at play. That dichotomy is part of the draw. “Home to You” details the complicated nature of residence, redefining the concept as “an impasse under hallway ceilings” or a “drink from borrowed cups.” The instrumental palette is just as whimsical. Elliptical keyboards flutter on buoyant basslines. A dewy slide adorns “Sad Nudes.” “Mother’s Mother’s Magazines” reads like a Kinks’ title and starts out like a song from The Fall before easing back for a brass excursion. “Magnificent Gestures” raises the pulse. With an assist from Kurt Vile, Le Bon ruminates on a “teacher’s laugh” before torpedoing guitar shards take it all down. “Daylight Matters” is the one to put on repeat. A sultry, almost disco sway meant for late afternoon drifting. Most of this is so pretty it could float around in the background without another thought. After sharks come zombies: Ian Ziering is back in Syfy action When you don’t have sharks left to fight, what’s next? Well, zombies ... at least in Ian Ziering’s view. Also back in Fox’s current “BH90210” sequel series, the actor is returning to action-horror turf after surviving six “Sharknados.” He and a fellow veteran of that movie franchise — writer Thunder Levin — devised the story for “Zombie Tidal Wave,” making its Syfy debut Saturday, Aug. 17. Ziering is a producer as well on the thriller, which also brings back another “Sharknado” alum, director Anthony C. Ferrante. “After doing those movies and realizing the need for content, I figured, ‘Why don’t I try to do something on my own?’ ” Ziering reflects.

“I’ve got a production company, and I always wanted to branch out. It was right around the time of ‘Sharknado 2: The Second One’ that I recognized the formula Syfy looks for in its movies, and I pitched them ‘Zombie Tidal Wave.’ And I knew that once I got the green light from them, finding financing would be pretty easy.” Though he was ready to go at that point five years ago, Ziering explains “Zombie Tidal Wave” was delayed because “we kept making ‘Sharknados.’ Once those came to an end, I was able to get into production with this, and we shot it in Thailand. I’d had enough with shooting in freezing climates! Plus, the landscape there is really conducive to this

Ian Ziering stars in and produces Saturday’s new Syfy movie “Zombie Tidal Wave.” movie; it creates a perfect visual context.” Ziering’s successor to “Sharknado’s” chainsaw-wielding Fin Shepard is Hunter Shaw, who also has a unique weapon — “Hell, yeah!,” Ziering confirms — derived from zombie lore that the actor-producer researched. “There’s something I find fascinating about a fishout-of-water scenario,” he says, “with an ordinary man who has to rise to the level of doing extraordinary things. When failure isn’t an option, people can achieve great things ... and I like characters like that. “Hunter is someone who has distanced himself from society,” adds Ziering. “He’s a retired firefighter who lived in New York and lived

through 9/11, and all the death and disaster was a system overload for him. As much as he enjoyed helping people, it was crushing for him not to be able to save everyone. He’s got a boat and sails the seas, and now, he finds himself on one of the outer islands of Southeast Asia.” Biological experimentation generates the zombies the tidal wave ultimately delivers, and as with “Sharknado,” Ziering (also seen lately in DC Universe’s “Swamp Thing”) hopes there’s more to come. “As with everything, you aim for the stars,” he reasons, “but it all depends on the audience’s reaction to this. We have ideas for a half-dozen or more stories to continue this.”
