A return to Hundred Acre Wood in Disney’s ‘Christopher Robin’ BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

Oh, bother. The misfortune of “Christopher Robin” is not only that it comes a year after “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” an earnest if sentimental tale about Winniethe-Pooh author A.A. Milne and his son, Christopher Robin Milne, but that it arrives a few months after the screwball radiance of “Paddington 2.” When it comes to bears in London this movie year, our hearts are already spoken for.

But for those who prefer honey to marmalade, “Christopher Robin” is a more gentle and melancholic fable about recapturing the joys of childhood as an adult with the help of a wise and innocent bear. It’s telling that in Marc Forster’s comparatively somber but sweet movie, the standout of Milne’s furry creatures — all of them rendered digitally as worn-out stuffed animals — is that old grump Eeyore (voiced by Brad Garrett), whose morose mutterings land nearly all the film’s laughs. Humor has never been the forte of Forster (“Finding Neverland,” “Quantum of Solace”), so

don’t come to “Christopher Robin” expecting hijinks from Tigger or a single overstuffed bear stuck in a doorway. Instead Forster has fashioned a meticulously handsome post-WWII period drama — perhaps one more for adults than children — leaning much closer to “The Velveteen Rabbit” than Saturday morning cartoon. There’s a degree of atonement in the stylistic shift; the real Christopher Robin (never a fan of the books) lamented the Disneyfication of his father’s characters and never accepted royalties. And as with Disney’s 2106’s “Pete’s Dragon,” there’s an unlikely, largely indie collection of filmmakers behind a relatively modest live-action revival. Alex Ross Perry (“Listen Up Philip”), Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”) and Allison Schroeder (“Hidden Figures”) wrote the script. In the opening scenes in the fictional land of the Hundred Acre Wood, Pooh and the rest are giving young Christopher Robin a farewell party. “Don’t you get all growed up on us,” Tigger tells him. But after a page-turning montage, Christopher Robin has indeed done just that. He’s now a working, married man in London, wed to Evelyn (Haley Atwell), with a daughter named Madeline (Bronte Carmichael) and a grueling job. He’s an efficiency manager for a luggage company housed in a towering gray building. The demands of his work have drained all the fun out of Christopher Robin, whose middle name has been upgraded to surname. He hasn’t so much as smiled in years, Evelyn says. But on a particularly crucial work weekend, out

pops Pooh from a Hundred Acre Wood portal from the trunk of a tree outside Christopher’s town house. The voice is instantly recognizable (Pooh veteran Jim Cummings voices him, as well as Tigger) though the form is a little novel. Like the other characters, Pooh looks more a glassyeyed teddy bear than he has before, and more frizzy than E.H. Shepard’s illustrations. The digital effects impressively double for tangible, hand-hewn felt creations, but (aside from Owl) they crucially lack lively eyes. That keeps the gang (there’s also Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga and Roo) always secondary on the screen to McGregor. Naturally, Christopher is pulled back into Hundred Acre Wood where his priorities are straightened out. He relearns Pooh’s wise advice that “doing nothing often leads to the very best something” — a message that proves surprisingly relevant to the midcentury workplace policies of Christopher’s luggage company, even if Pooh mishears his job as “a fish-in-the-sea manager.” It all fits together a little too well, too predictably and, well, too Disney. Pooh and company have always been a wonderfully neurotic bunch, but in Forster’s polished film, they’re a little suffocated, a little lifeless. Any semblance of authentic childlike glee remains purely theoretical. It’s surely not a good sign when Eeyore is the one stealing the show. Watching “Christopher Robin,” I couldn’t help feeling a bit like Tigger when he arrives in London and wonders: “How come nobody’s bouncin’?”

crowd-source his records or hawk them from the stage of some East Nashville nightclub. On his latest record, “Tilt & Shine,” Gordon delivers another album that comes as close to sonic poetry as anything from any musician who hasn’t already won a Nobel Prize for literature. A native of Monroe, Louisiana who earned a master’s in fine arts from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop before settling in Nashville, Gordon matches edgy music to gritty, vivid lyrics. He scratches out his sound on a 1956 Gibson ES-125, tuned to low, open D for a visceral, electric blues-based vibe. Then he carries you off to musky motel rooms and prison rodeos and anywhere else he wants to take you. “Every river’s a daughter of a dirty rain,” Gordon sings on “Saint on a Chain,” a brilliant meditation on religion. “See how it shines, how it shines.” Not much of what Gordon does is a contender for commercial country radio, maybe because it rocks too much. It’s less clear why music this powerful hasn’t broken through on rock stations, but that might explain the crowd-sourcing. Wherever it surfaces, it’s mesmerizing enough to give people who hear it the sense that they’re in on a secret. See how it shines, indeed.

‘For the Love of Metal’ Napalm

Dee Snider, the Long Island mouth that roared on all-time rock classics including “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock,” already did the solo thing in the early ’90s while Twisted Sister was on hiatus. But apparently there was something deeper, darker and heavier brewing within Snider that even he might not have known was there. (And this from a man who wrote a horror movie about a killer who sews victims’ mouths shut.) That darkness shines on “For the Love of Metal,” a project that came about when Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta dared Snider to make a modern metal album. The result is heavy on growls, guttural snarls and bowel-rattling bass and guitar riffs. It’s difficult to imagine that a guy old enough to collect Social Security can melt your face deep into his fifth decade in the heavy metal biz. But he does. And Snider garnishes these tracks with just enough attitude to appeal to his ’80s fans. “Lies Are a Business” is steeped in today’s numetal riffage, yet it employs a twin-lead guitar solo that could have been ripped from Accept’s “Fast As A Shark.” “Roll Over You” sounds like an extended Twisted Sister stage rant set to music, and lyrics that are as offensively unprintable at the start as they are at the very end. The true reveal here is “Tomorrow’s No Concern,” in which Dee seemingly lets go of his considerable ‘80s legacy, saying he doesn’t need it because he’s got today well in hand. objective in the song “Lookin’ for Someone,” delivers depth and a dose of danceable defiance in his best album to date. His timely depictions of the human condition, fueled by the never-say-die rock revolution, hit the sweet spot on lots of levels. “Don’t let the (rhymes with suckers) kill your buzz!” urges Nile — a musical mantra that’s useful for so many situations. Touches of whimsy and tender love songs buffer the uppercuts. But Nile can’t stay out of the fray for long. He grapples with greed; environmental destruction; homelessness. The title cut references a destitute boy planning a border crossing. Some intros sneak up the fuse, then — BOOM! — instant earworm. “I, I — I, I defy you!” the band declares. The equally rowdy, fan-inspired

RESSON — During the past five years, 34 Blair and Cambria county children battling critical illnesses received wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation with the more than $130,000 raised through a bluegrass festival,called Pickin’ For Wishes, held each August. As bone cancer ravaged her body, 17year-old Danielle Bender’s spirit reached out to others. She asked her family to “be good to Make-A-Wish,” said her mother Bev Bender of Loretto. Danielle, the second oldest of four girls, died 30 years ago this November. Danielle’s desire for her family to pay-it-forward came from her generousity and the gratitude she felt for receiving a once-in-a-lifetime trip to San Diego, Calif., to attend the 1987 Super Bowl. For the Benders, the wish they were granted created great memories. “It was the most fabulous vacation ever,” Bev recalled recently. “We learned that no matter what the circumstance, it’s important to build happy memories and carry that forward.” Since Danielle’s death, many family members spearheaded by Bev and her oldest daughter Michelle Houser of Duncansville, have volunteered in varying capacities with Make-A-Wish, said Lindsey Herzing, regional manager of Make-A-Wish’s Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia chapter.

The bluegrass festival has grown each year and Michelle and Bev are grateful for the support they receive from an army of volunteers and local businesses who donate supplies and services. “We’ve been overwhelmed with support from all our family, sponsorships from local businesses, and tons of volunteers who work the entire event,” Michelle said. An admission ticket costs $10 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at Miller’s Hunting & Fishing, Cresson, and B&S Beverage in Patton. Each ticket holder is eligible to win more than $2,500 in prizes, individual tickets to college and professional sporting events and gift cards to area businesses. The grand prize is a trip for two to Las Vegas that includes airfare, hotel and transfers. “Never underestimate the benevolence of people,” Bev said. “It’s an honor to help Make-A-Wish. Lee’s ‘BlacKkKlansman’ is daring and essential BY LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

In 1979, a man named Ron Stallworth who was the first African-American police officer and detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department also became a card-carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan and the leader of the local chapter. He would send a white coworker to play him for in-person meetings as part of the wild undercover operation, but Stallworth was the one on the phone, insisting his hatred for non-white races with everyone from the local chapter members to the KKK’s “grand wizard” David Duke himself.

It’s Stallworth’s story that provides the framework for Spike Lee’s blistering new film, “BlacKkKlansman,” but hardly the full picture. Deceptively epic in scope, in “BlacKkKlansman” Lee has made an immensely entertaining film about everything — love, friendship, ambition, civil rights, the power of words and images to uplift and destroy and the various shades and ideologies of racism and revolution that will leave you craving another viewing. John David Washington (Denzel Washington’s son) plays Ron Stallworth, a composed and deliberate man who isn’t afraid to ask for what he wants, whether it’s a job or a quick promotion out of the dreaded records room and into undercover work. Many around him are quick to throw labels and make assumptions about what he can and can’t do. His co-worker calls him a toad, because of his race. His

black student union girlfriend, Patrice, asks if he’s a pig (i.e. a cop). At work, he seems extreme — a rookie suggesting a dangerous undercover operation to infiltrate the KKK. In life, he seems compliant. As Patrice (a brilliant Laura Harrier) tells him, meaningful change is impossible when working within the structures of a racist system. But Ron has a plan to infiltrate The Organization, and a few around him like the police chief (Robert John Burke), and two detectives, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) and Jimmy Creek (Michael Buscemi) are at least willing to go along with it for a while.

Flip draws the card to be inperson Ron, which turns out to be a headache of its own when one of The Organization’s members, Felix (Jasper Paakkonen), starts to suspect that he might actually be Jewish. These scenes are riveting to watch, infused with a perfectly executed tension as Flip carefully navigates his way through meetings and interactions with the group, including the docile chapter leader Walter (Ryan Eggold), the maniacally sinister Felix and the perpetually drunk and dumb Ivanhoe (Paul Walter Hauser). They are, on the whole, dopes used for comedic effect, but

there is something else going on below the surface. You’re always keenly aware that these shadowy, back bar racists could with the right leader become the mainstream. The acting is expert throughout with standout performances by Washington and Driver, especially, who gets a powerful arc. The supporting cast is also notably strong, including Harrier and Topher Grace as David Duke, who is attempting to take The Organization into the mainstream with a gentlemanly demeanor, polished suits and a politician’s smile. Mind you, “BlacKkKlansman” is not a

subtle film and is often repetitive where it least needs it. Stallworth’s “white voice” and racist musings over the phone are perfectly used a few times, until the effect eventually begins to dull. But it is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years, from composer Terence Blanchard. Every frame is packed with meaning and metaphor from the opening, the famous crane shot from Victor Fleming’s “Gone With the Wind,” onward to the sins of the present day. It’s a Spike Lee joint that is not to be missed.

John Stamos is the host of the yearly WE Day special, which ABC presents Friday.

s a new dad, John Stamos is getting a number of ways to express his enhanced love and concern for young people. In playing host again recently for PBS’ “A Capitol Fourth,” the “Full House” veteran spoke emotionally about his hopes and dreams for his infant son. He does the same in presiding over the latest yearly WE Day special, which gathers many youths and inspires them to contribute to their communities and the world, via motivators including celebrities. Taped in April in Southern California, the event — one of 19 in the United States, Canada (where the concept originated),

the United Kingdom and the Caribbean — has an ABC telecast Friday, Aug, 17. “He had just been born then,” the friendly Stamos says of his child, “and this is what it’s all about: What are we leaving behind? You see these kids who have such passion. If we knew back then what we know now, would we have changed the course of things? I’m grateful to all these kids who are doing good in the world and making it a better place for mine.” Among others participating in this year’s WE Day special are Jennifer Aniston, Will Ferrell, Selena Gomez, Martin Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Dr. Phil McGraw, and music’s Chainsmokers, Dierks Bentley and

Cyndi Lauper. Also appearing: NeverAgain founders Jaclyn Corin and Cameron Kasky, survivors of last February’s shootings at a Parkland, Fla., high school that prompted the global March for Our Lives a month later. “I was a little afraid that (WE Day was) going to go easy on all of that,” Stamos notes, “because everybody’s so afraid to talk about gun violence, but they hit it. I wasn’t exactly nervous meeting (the Parkland students), but I just wanted to say the right things and thank them properly. The whole show has that feel. It’s pretty illuminating.” WE Day is the brainchild of Canadian brothers Craig and Marc Kiel-

burger, who conceived of a program to empower youths and advocate for them to take leadership roles in and out of the classroom. The only way they qualify to attend WE Day events such as the televised one is to adopt two causes, one local and one global, and take action on them. Stamos reflects that on the special, “I talked about my junior-highschool teacher and the encouragement he gave me. I was sort of an awkward dude, but I didn’t put obstacles up because of good teachers like him and my parents. I never said, ‘Oh, I can’t do that.’ I embraced who I was and just plowed through, and to be able to say that in front of a lot of kids can be helpful, I think.”
