‘Solutions’ Night Street Records

It’s always been hard to pin down K.Flay’s music. She’s a bit of a sonic chameleon, mixing elements of hiphop, rock and indie pop with moods that go from brash to introspective. You’ll get no clear answers after listening to her new album “Solutions” — thankfully. K.Flay, the stage name of Illinoisraised Kristine Flaherty, starts her third studio CD with the wonderfully autobiographical statement song “I Like Myself (Most of the Time)” and ends with a wistful tune about her father, “DNA.” In between, we get to celebrate all the gloriously different sides of an artist who resists getting boxed up in one genre. There’s The B-52-ish “This Baby Don’t Cry” and the Lorde-adjacent “Bad Vibes.” She channels Weezer on

the environmentally conscious “Not in California” and practically raps on “Good News.” Her thrilling vocals range from babyish to Joan Jett-ish. K.Flay, whose biggest hit to date is her 2017 “Blood in the Cut,” got a song on the TV show “Riverdale” and has been featured on songs by X Ambassadors, Tom Morello and Mike Shinoda. Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds is also a fan. He invited her to open for the Dragons on tour and signed her to his Interscope-distributed label, Night Street. (He gets a cowriting credit on her “This Baby Don’t Cry.”) K.Flay had a hand in writing every song and plays guitar and keyboards on a few. She gets production help from some old fans — Tommy English (who earned a Grammy nomination for K.Flay’s album “Every Where Is Some Where”) and JT Daly, who helmed “Blood in the Cut” to his own Grammy nod. “Solutions” reveals a woman unbowed by social pressure, angry by adulthood’s lies and aware of her insecurities but not defined by them. She mocks overly posed Instagram photos, calls out fakers — “You’re the sequel that sucks” — and is modest about her goals: “Everybody wants to count their

calories and money and their likes/ Baby, my job is just to rhyme/ And I’m fine with that,” she sings on the opening song. OK, but definitely count us as a like. — By Mark Kennedy, The Associated Press

‘King’s Mouth: Music and Songs’ Warner Bros.

The new album by The Flaming Lips is a head trip — literally. The ever-evolving, mind-blowing altrockers have somehow upped their game with a concept album and accompanying art project that takes us into a giant head. Weird? Yes. Thrilling? Of course. This is the Lips, after all. “King’s Mouth: Music and Songs” is a beautifully crafted psychedelic album that may remind you of early Genesis in its musicianship and ambition. Some songs, like the cinematic “Mother Universe” are instrumental, others have sound effects and the album is narrated by The Clash’s Mick Jones. It traces the life of a giant king, from birth to grave, growing in complexity and abstraction through its 12 tracks, from baby to adulthood. The king dies heroically, and the townsfolk honor

Altoona Mirror I Page 9 him by cutting off his head, dipping it in steel and celebrating his legacy by spending time in it. Does that sound strange? Yes. See above. “Inside the king’s mouth/They entered into the hope of a future that has yet to be lived/Raining down dream upon dream/With love from above,” go the lyrics to “Mouth of the King.” None of the dozen songs on the album are predictable, even in the same song. “The Sparrow” morphs from an industrial lullaby to a funky Nine Inch Nails-like dance tune and back again. Other standout tracks include the childhood-evoking “How Many Times” and the funky “Feedaloodum Beedle Dot.” The music parallels frontman Wayne Coyne’s immersive art installation of the same name that takes onlookers into a 10-foot tall chrome head, where they sit on teeth-shaped foam pillows and experience a pulsing light show triggered by the Lips’ music. It sounds like peak Flaming Lips. For anyone not able to get inside, the album will just have to do. And as far as escapist fare, finding yourself inside someone else’s head turns out to be a nice vacation in these tough times. — By Mark Kennedy, The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Shia LaBeouf is trying to show how different he is from his co-star in “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” Zack Gottsagen. “Hey, Zack,” says LaBeouf. “Are you a good opera singer?” “Yes!” replies Gottsagen with a smile. “Hey, Zack. Are you good scuba diver?” “Yes!” responds Gottsagen, just as quickly, just as brightly. LaBeouf shakes his head in awe. Like the 33-year-old LaBeouf, Gottsagen, is an actor. He’s one year LaBeouf’s senior and he has Down syndrome. Truth be told, he can’t sing a lick of opera and isn’t much for scuba diving. But that’s never stopped Gottsagen. “No matter what you ask him, he’s good at it. He was raised a special, magical kid since he was young. There’s no self-doubt in him,” says LaBeouf. “You ask me if I’m a good actor and I’ll tell you I’m s—-.” Six years ago, Gottsagen met Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz at an acting workshop for disabled people at a camp in Santa Monica, California, organized by Zeno Mountain Farm. They immediately noticed Gottsagen who, while playing the bad guy in a Western, would with an air of danger take off his glasses and put down his drink before saying his line. Gottsagen, who works as an usher at his local movie theater in Florida, told them he wanted to be a movie star. “We had to have a really frank conversation about how there aren’t many opportunities for people with Down syndrome to act in movies that go into theaters. He kind of got really emotional and he just said, ‘Well, let’s do it together then!’” recalls Schwartz. “It was his idea. It was a great idea.” Schwartz and Nilson had only toiled on the peripheries of Hollywood, working on commercials and short films. Nilson, once a hand model, doubled for Brad Pitt. But, inspired by Gottsagen’s determination, they checked out

some books from the library about how to write a screenplay. They put together a script about a wrestling-obsessed young man with Down syndrome who breaks out of his assisted living home and embarks on a “Huck Finn”-like adventure across the North Carolina outer banks and joining up with a destitute crab fisherman running from his debtors (LaBeouf). It took extreme effort to make it a reality. Nilson and Schwartz went broke and became homeless in the process. For a spell, Nilson lived in a tent without much food. “For better or worse, we went a little bit crazy getting that promise we made to Zack to happen,” says Nilson. But with Gottsagen starring, the filmmakers scraped together some money and began attracting an enviable cast drawn to the project’s good heartedness. The film co-stars Dakota Johnson, John Hawkes, Bruce Dern and Thomas Haden Church. After it premiered at SXSW earlier this year, “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” which opened in theaters Friday, won the audience award. Reviews have been excellent. Gottsagen’s dream has come true. “I hope some people could have the opportunity to go for their dreams,” Gottsagen said in an interview alongside LaBeouf shortly after taping appearances on the “Today” show and “Good Morning America.” “Follow your heart and maybe someday you can be a movie star.” What’s striking about Gottsagen is how he’s taken his good fortune in such stride. Having long loved movies (he counts “Grease” as his favorite) and studied acting since has a kid, Gottsagen is remarkably comfortable in the spotlight. He has even taught acting to others with Down syndrome. He worked for his big break. He earned it. Instead, it’s those around Gottsagen whose lives have changed, particularly LaBeouf’s. The intense actor and sometimes meta-artist

who has been known to battle self-destructive tendencies didn’t know what exactly he was getting into when he, a month before shooting, got off an airplane in Georgia and hopped into the back of a pick-up. Nilson and Schwartz sat in the front, Gottsagen and LaBeouf in the back, holding each other as the truck swerved. They quickly became close, spending their evenings watching wrestling and their days on 12-hour shoots across the Georgia countryside, swimming in rivers, dancing on railroad tracks and having watermelon fights. Like their characters, there was nothing “cheeseball,” just honesty and tenderness and equality between them. “I was quite unintelligible to myself before I met him. He had more self-awareness coming into this picture than I do, which is saying a lot,” says LaBeouf. “Walking out, I’ve adopted a lot of his self-love and his confidence. It’s leading to self-love, which is leading to an ability to receive love, which is what was lacking in my life. And I would run to alcohol. I just hated myself. Just a big self-hater.” In the middle of production in 2017, LaBeouf was arrested for public drunkenness . A video captured him making sexist and racist remarks to police officers. LaBeouf has since gotten sober, and he credits Gottsagen with his turnaround. “He knows about my pain intimately. We’d be sitting there watching wrestling every night. He’d be eating ice cream. I’d be drinking gin. I’d tell him, ‘You gotta stop eating all that ice cream.’ He’d say, ‘You gotta stop drinking that gin,’” says LaBeouf. “This man’s a year older than me. He’s been acting longer than me and he’s healthier than I am. He has more friends than I have, has longer lasting loving relationships.” At that, LaBeouf begins to tear up. Gottsagen leans his head against his co-star and wraps his arm around him. They tell each “I love you.” “I was doing things for Shia because I just

don’t like to see old Shia act like this. I wanted to see the new Shia that I know,” says Gottsagen. “I have respect for other stars in films and I want Shia to be nice with them, except for those stars who don’t care about Shia. That would be their loss. I don’t care about what they do, but I care about Shia a lot more. Shia can do anything.” Gottsagen turns to LaBeouf and says, “I do mean it.” “I know you do,” LaBeouf replies. “You mean everything that you say.” Gottsagen is by any measure exceptional. Census figures have shown 19% of the U.S. population has a disability, but representation has lagged in movies. According to a study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, just 2.5% of characters in the 100 most popular movies of 2017 where depicted with a disability. And those roles are usually played by actors without one. “The only way to get past that stigma is to actually give him an opportunity to unveil his humanity on you,” says LaBeouf of Gottsagen. “I think that’s what the movie does. Our trade secret is heart. You’re watching two people connect and it enlarges your humanity. It introduces you to this brave man, this beautiful man.” Dakota Johnson also grew especially close with Gottsagen, tending to his battered feet, scheduling rehearsal time and organizing trips, like one they took to a water park. Gottsagen was a leader on set, too. After each day of shooting, he’d take the directors’ bullhorn and say a few encouraging words to the cast and crew. Those relationships have continued. LaBeouf says he called Gottsagen from rehab. They’re still in regular contact. “This is the least judgmental friend that I have, the most supportive, the most consistent. It didn’t stop,” says LaBeouf. “If you asked me if I was an opera singer now, I’d think about it.”

‘Scary Stories’ is a likable Frankenstein of a movie BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” is, likably, a Frankenstein of a movie that stitches together tales from the cultishly beloved 1980s book series by Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell.

Schwartz’s stories, culled from folklore and urban legend, are mostly just a page or two. But they feel like shared nightmares, told round an eternal campfire. One is about a game of hideand-seek gone wrong for a newly wed minister’s daughter. Another begins simply: “There was a haunted house where every night a bloody head fell down the chimney. At least that’s what people said.” Gammell’s wondrously frightful black-and-white sketches made the tales that much more vivid and haunting. They are the sort you don’t ever forget. The same can’t be said of Andre Ovredal’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” though it tries gamely and inventively to pay homage to its source material. It uses Schwartz’s stories and Gammell’s pictures imaginatively, blending them into one narrative propelled along by a found book, penned in blood, that writes the film’s teenage characters into the horrors conjured into the horror fables (among them “Harold,” “The Big Toe” and “The Red Spot”). It’s a noble enough mission, made with evident devotion to the authors’ creation and a sincere desire to capture the magical ability of books to, page by page, work their way into the darkest recesses of our minds. Of course, books do that on their own, without the help of movies. And Ovredal’s film, by weaving together the supernatural creations of Schwartz and

Gammell, blunts their effect, rendering them more like tropes within a familiar horror-movie context. Yet even if the material — a haunted scarecrow, a young woman’s vengeful ghost — can feel stale off the page, Ovredal’s filmmaking is fresh and vibrant. The Norwegian director of “Trollhunter,” working with producer and monster maestro Guillermo Del Toro, composes the film with frames full of texture and shadow. It glows with both a familiar nostalgia (the film is set in 1968 and a drive-in makes the setting for one pivotal scene, with “Night of the Living Dead” playing behind) and a vibrancy that pushes the genre forward ever so slightly. Schwartz’s books were for kids but

they bore a darkness that has ever since probably startled quite a few disapproving parents. Ovredal’s film, rated PG-13, tries to straddle a similar line and mostly does so, falling somewhere in between Amblin and Blumhouse. Dan and Kevin Hageman’s script invents a trio of teenagers — the nebbish, aspiring writer Stella (Zoe Colletti) and her two pals (Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur) — who, along with a new kid in town (Michael Garza, as a Mexican-American urged to “move along” by the local police). On a Halloween night, they escape bullies by hiding in an abandoned mansion that once belonged to the family that ruled over the town, Mill Valley,

Pennsylvania, but left behind a mysterious scandal. There they find the book and soon realize that they, almost literally, can’t put it down. There are bits here that feel cliched. Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” which already belongs to David Fincher’s “Zodiac,” opens the film, as sung by Lana Del Rey. The period detail, with Nixon on TV and the Vietnam draft unfolding, isn’t much more than window dressing. Same goes for the backstory that left Stella living with a single father. But “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” like the books, only needs to be so deep to cast a spell. Even if some stories are still best told by fireside.

‘The Righteous Gemstones’ – Ministry of broken people BY GEORGE DICKIE

On the surface, the Gemstones are a family of televangelists who have been doing God’s work for two generations and are beloved by millions. But beneath it, they all suffer from the very human frailties of lust, envy and greed. And that’s what gets them in trouble in “The Righteous Gemstones,” a halfhour comedy series from Danny McBride (“Eastbound & Down,” “Vice Principals”) that premieres Sunday, Aug. 18, on HBO. Here, McBride stars as Jesse Gemstone, the oldest child and heir apparent to the Gemstone empire run by father Eli (John Goodman, “The Conners”), a man with solid business sense who has been left broken by the death of his

dear wife Aimee-Leigh (country artist Jennifer Nettles). Also figuring into ministry’s equation are youngest child Kelvin (Adam Devine, “Pitch Perfect”), a pseudo hipster and persistent thorn in Jesse’s side; and Judy (Edi Patterson, “Vice Principals”), who secretly lives with her fiance and dreams of escaping the family compound. But those problems are minute compared to what surfaces in the premiere episode — a video showing Jesse with hookers and others in various states of undress partaking in drugs and pleasures of the flesh. And when blackmailers demand payment to keep the video from going public, Jesse and his siblings set about try-

Of course, that doesn’t go too well. “I think he sort of imagines that one day this will all be his,” McBride explains, “but I think he sort of lacks the moral compass for it. And he’s struggling with the idea that he might be like handed the kingdom that he’s not really cut out to lead.” It turns out he’s not a great leader in his own home either. He’s unfaithful to his devoted wife Amber (Cassidy Freeman, “Longmire”), a former journalist, and his kids hate him. He is also something of a kid himself, bick-

ering childishly with his siblings and not comporting himself as someone who seeks great responsibility and to do the Lord’s work. As for Eli, he is just an empty shell of a man dealing with his wife’s death the only way he knows how — by throwing himself into the business. “That’s the only thing he had and he doesn’t really do that very well,” Goodman says. “He’s pretty shattered. Yeah, he’s kind of I guess looking at his kids more to hopefully take over but I don’t think he really believes that. ... It basically comes down to focusing on a career and the church instead of the children and the seeds of that bear bitter fruit.”
