Hollywood survives summer without bombs BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Have you noticed something oddly tranquil about this summer movie season? For the first time in recent memory, there hasn’t been one major bomb. Usually by now, there would be blockbuster-sized craters left on the charred summer-movie battlefield, the inevitable toll of Hollywood’s most high-stakes season. But this year, summer-movie bombwatching, long one of the most dependable spectator sports of the season, has gone entirely without the sight of a “Lone Ranger”-sized mushroom cloud. After the cataclysmic, the-sky-is-falling summer of 2017, when overall grosses slid 14.6 percent from the year before, Hollywood has rebounded. Ticket sales in North America this summer are up 11.3 percent, according to comScore. The comeback is even more pronounced when you factor in that the annual Marvel movie kickoff to summer slid just ahead of the official first weekend of May start, shifting the $678.5 million domestic for Disney’s “Avenger: Infinity War” to the spring. Amid a remarkably turbulent time for the movie business, this summer has been surprisingly, almost weirdly, steady. “The studios did what they were supposed to,” said Kyle Davies, domestic distribution chief for Paramount Pictures. “This notion that people are tired of going to the theaters, I don’t believe it for a second. I think people are ready every weekend: ‘Give me a reason to come.’” Paramount didn’t have a lot of releases over the summer but coming off the spring success of “A Quiet Place,” Davies said, “Things have turned around.” “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” the sixth installment in the Tom Cruise franchise, is approaching $500 million worldwide, and the Diane Keaton-Jane Fondastarring “Book Club” has, with $68.6 million, fared better than most comedies this year. What’s behind the bounce back? MoviePass, the flailing subscription service, has claimed responsibility. Subscription moviegoing has surely had an additive effect, bringing more regular visitors to theaters. But how much? There’s no statistical evidence of MoviePass boosting bottom lines, and studio executives downplay its influence as

minimal. MoviePass, which recently reduced its plan to three movies a month, says it accounts for 6 percent of all domestic tickets. Mid-summer, AMC trotted out its own $20-a-month subscription option, attracting 260,000 subscribers in its first seven weeks. AMC last week said that’s translated to about 1 million admissions or about 4 percent of U.S. moviegoers at AMC theaters, the country’s largest chain. Jeff Bock, senior box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, said it’s difficult to extrapolate how big a driver subscription services have been, though he credited the copious attention and drama around MoviePass with fueling moviegoing awareness. He’s more inclined to point to the improved studio project, specifically sequels like “Incredibles 2,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Deadpool 2.” The season hasn’t been without its worrisome blips. Two of the most dependable forces in moviegoing — “Star Wars” and the Rock — both showed that they’re mortal. But even those disappointments were measured. “Solo,” while cause for real concern for “Star Wars” going forward, still nearly cleared $400 million worldwide. Dwayne Johnson’s “Skyscraper,” saved by sales in China, managed to gross almost $300 million worldwide. But the final week of August should only pad the season’s lead. After scoring $5 million in its opening day Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians” received glowing reviews. Following the previously released chart-topping “The Meg,” Warner Bros. will likely account for the summer’s only two original, non-sequel no. 1 releases. On the indie side, business has been slower. Spike Lee’s recently released “BlacKkKlansman,” for Focus Features, has added a jolt to the often sleepy August period, landing the director his best opening weekend in 12 years. But the most unexpected sensations of the summer have been documentaries. There will be three docs to clear $10 million in box office, an unprecedented high for non-fiction filmmaking. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” is up to $21.8 million for Focus, Neon’s “Three Identical Strangers” has hauled in $9.7 million, and Magnolia’s Ruth Bader Ginsberg documentary “RBG” has grossed $13.7 million.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ elicits mixed feelings BY DEREK CAI The Associated Press

SINGAPORE — The craze for “Crazy Rich Asians” is hitting Asia, with a premiere in Singapore followed by openings in several neighboring countries later this week. Much of the over-the-top romantic comedy was set in this wealthy city-state. As the stars streamed past flashing lights down the red carpet earlier this week, fans and tourists swarmed around them taking photos and asking for selfies. The movie is expected to draw enthusiastic crowds across Asia after its boxoffice bonanza in the U.S. Directed by John M. Chu, the film was adapted from Singaporean author Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name. It follows Chinese-American Rachel Chu as she travels with her boyfriend Nick Young to Singapore to meet his family and discovers they are ultra-wealthy. The movie is drawing a mixed reaction. Admirers of the film say that as the first majority Asian-cast film in over two decades to be released by a major Hollywood studio it upends Hollywood’s usual stereotypes of Asian characters. Critics say it misses a chance to showcase Singapore’s ethnic diversity. The $30 million Warner Bros. film has grossed more than $35 million since its Aug. 15 world debut in Los Angeles and came out tops with its release in U.S. theaters over the weekend. “This (movie) is something very personal to peo-

ple, and it feels like a bigger movement than just the movie itself,” Chu, the director, told The Associated Press. The film has drawn criticism for its inaccurate portrayal of Singapore’s ethnic diversity, with some calling it a misrepresentation of the country’s minority races. Even though a majority of its residents are Chinese, a quarter of its population are Malay, Indian, or Eurasians, with many migrant workers from other Asian countries like Bangladesh or the Philippines. “There’s this whole notion of the movie being a triumph for representation, which is very problematic. The only Indians and Malays you see are servants,” said Nicholas Yong, a Singaporean journalist and author who saw the movie before its Singapore premiere. Even though its glamorous depiction of Singapore could give its tourism a boost, it was not entirely welcomed. “To us, ‘Crazy Rich’ should not just be about the opulence and luxury showcased in the film, but Singapore’s actual richness in terms of our diversity,” said Singapore Tourism Board’s spokesperson Lynette Pang. As is true anywhere, in Singapore, the super-rich with their extravagant lifestyles are a tiny, privileged minority. ‘Time Flies’ Yep Roc

Jim Lauderdale is a steady geyser of Americana, releasing over two dozen solo albums and collaborations and writing for and with many mostly country musicians — from George Strait to Rodney Crowell and from the Dixie Chicks to George Jones — at a steaming pace. Being prolific, however, would not mean much if Lauderdale’s songwriting and singing weren’t as consistently great as “Time Flies” once again demonstrates. The first half of the album explores classic and contemporary country sounds: the melancholy title track, the environmentally conscious “The Road Is a River,” the Willie Nelson-like “Slow As Molasses” and “When I Held the Cards,” a tear-jerker of a hard-luck story. There’s even more variety later, including the noir-ish “Wearing Out Your Cool,” sax solo included, and two swinging tunes in “Wild on Me Fast” and “While You’re Hoping,” with echoes of Leon Russell and Dr. John and mentions of everyone from Cleopatra to Monet. Maybe as a coda to his Beatleinspired 2017 album, “London Southern,” there’s gentle psychedelia on “It Blows My Mind,” on which Lauderdale sounds a bit like Stan Ridgeway on the verses. On the final tune, “If the World’s Still Here Tomorrow,” Lauderdale vows that, if we all live to see another sunrise, “I’ll still be loving you,” doomsday be damned. Also seeing its long-delayed release simultaneously with “Time Flies” is Lauderdale’s first full album, a 1979 collaboration with bluegrass great Roland White which they recorded in Earl Scruggs’ basement. With top-notch backing from guitarist Chris Scruggs and bassist Jay Weaver, “Time Flies” continues Lauderdale’s prolonged streak of unfailing quality, memorable songs and great performances. ‘To the Sunset’ Silver Knife/Thirty Tigers

The start of Amanda Shires’ new album sounds like a spin of the dial on an old radio struggling to find a station amid the static. Will it be country music? Pop? Rock? Or maybe something from outer space, which inspired the lyrics to the first song. Shires is way out there, an unclassifiable original, which is what makes “To the Sunset” a pleasure. Nashville superstar producer Dave Cobb was clearly on board with the idea of creating something different, and he helped Shires come up with a 10-song set that’s her best work yet. It starts with her quirky, quavery alto, which is processed and multitracked to excellent effect. A fine supporting cast includes her husband, Jason Isbell, who plays guitar riffs not heard on his own records and sounds as though he’s having a blast. Ditto Shires, who plays the uke, whis-

tles and lets out a gleeful “Wooo!” at the start of the rocker “Eve’s Daughter.” She should be happy after writing a batch of terrific, slightly twisted tunes filled with happy hooks and memorable melodies. Armed with a newly earned MFA in creative writing, Shires serves up quotable couplets about champagne, clothes envy and music versus sports. Gilbert O’Sullivan is still himself — reflective, sensitive and witty — on his 19th studio album, which often sounds like his 1971 debut, maybe even better. If you haven’t noticed any of O’Sullivan’s new music over the past, oh, 40 years or so, you may think this is a comeback of sorts. In truth, the

Ireland-born, England-raised O’Sullivan has been releasing records at what now counts as a fairly regular pace (every three or four years) for decades, with blessedly few detours into synthesizers and electronic drums. Under the guidance of producer Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, Laura Marling, Tom Jones), O’Sullivan achieves a sound here that’s more straightforward but also richer, with Stephanie Jean’s Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, Paul Stacey’s electric guitar, twin brother Jeremy Stacey’s drums and Nick Pini’s bass seamlessly enhancing his acoustic piano. There are plenty of highlights among the ballads, mid-tempo pop songs and even some faster-paced tunes, with most giving a clear idea of what they’re about: “Love How You Leave Me,” “I’ll Never Love Again,” “The Same The Whole World Over.” “What Is It About My Girl” is a steady trot with a funky lead guitar while “This Riff” is pure Jerry Lee Lewis, with multiple pianos and Chas Hodges (from Chas & Dave) on harmony vocals. “No Head For Figures But Yours” continues O’Sullivan’s knack for gentle rockers. The sprightly “The Mind Boggles,” in a Monty Python vein, and “Dansette Dreams And 45’s,” with an elegant string arrangement, could be a crusty curmudgeon’s manifestos about driverless cars, youngsters’ cell phone dependency and the current U.S. leader. O’Sullivan makes them about all that, too, but they’re tempered by his reliably sweet-but-not-saccharine melodies and his natural delivery. Like with his old hits “Alone Again (Naturally),” “Get Down” or “What’s In A Kiss,” O’Sullivan is again back at the top of his game. — By Pablo Gorondi The Associated Press

The rock band announced Wednesday that “Aerosmith: Deuces are Wild” would kick off April 6, 2019, at the Park Theater, where Lady Gaga will launch her residency in December. Aerosmith announced 18 shows for April, June and July. Tickets, priced from $75 to $750, go on sale Aug. 24. An X-rated Muppets in ‘Happytime Murders’ BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

It’s almost reassuring that in today’s often sanitized, assembly-line mainstream moviemaking that a film can be as crude, as off-brand and as bad as “The Happytime Murders.” Almost. Starring Melissa McCarthy in a seedy, half-human, half-puppet Los Angeles, “The Happytime Murders” is an R-rated, adult-themed puppet adventure from Brian Henson, son of Jim. That in itself isn’t terrible. The elder Henson himself had adult aspirations for the Muppets. (They were, awkwardly, a part of the first season of “Saturday Night Live.”) From Edgar Bergen’s dummies to “Avenue Q” to “Team America” the thrill of puppets saying what they shouldn’t has long held some amusement.

But the humor of “The Happytime Murders,” a Jim Henson Company production featuring a new species of Muppet dubbed Miskreants, is so stale that I suspect even those bitter balcony critics Statler and Waldorf wouldn’t bother heckling it. “Happytime Murders” has been promoted as “No Sesame, All Street,” a tagline that resulted in a lawsuit from PBS (it was dismissed). And Henson (who directed “The Muppet Christmas Carol” and “Muppet Treasure Island”) seems to think the film can coast by purely on cheap giggles from puppets browsing for porn, snorting glitter through Twizzlers and being blown into clouds of cotton. It can’t. The result is a low point for the Jim Henson Company, a dispiriting and unmitigated misfire whose only upside is that it shows a sloppy, ill-considered movie can still get made, despite today’s quality controls. “The Happytime Murders” is dispirit-

ing not because it’s crude but because it’s so empty of wit, despite the comic firepower of McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Elizabeth Banks — a trio not in need of puppet assistance. Yet the film’s clash of cute and coarse makes the ’toon mashup “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” look comparatively seamless. And like “Roger Rabbit,” “The Happytime Murders” is a detective tale: a film noir with felt. Phil Phillips (puppeteer Bill Barretta) is a private eye like most before him — a cynical ex-cop with Venetian shades in his office — only Phil differs in that he’s occasionally mistaken for a blue sock. In “The Happytime Murders,” the puppets are second-class citizens with few rights of their own, though more freedom than when they were earlier forced to be entertainers. “Times have changed,” Phil tells a sidewalk performer. “You don’t have to sing and dance for the man anymore.” To make it in Hollywood, some puppets, like Phil’s brother, resort to bleaching their skin and donning more human-like noses. Phil finds himself on the trail of a “Seven”-like killer who is killing all of the stars from a former puppet sitcom, “The Happytime Gang.” The case reunites him with his former partner (McCarthy). In their pursuit, the puppet deaths, whether by bullet or dog bite, are frequent and messy. For a movie about the dignity of the puppet in a human world, it derives a lot of glee from seeing them torn to shreds. Maybe Muppets could make salient sociopolitical metaphors. Maybe letting them run amok in a grown-up world could be funny. Maybe Gonzo’s chicken fetish is worth investigation. But such a parallel universe doesn’t exist in “The Happytime Murders,” which uses its premise for only a parade of ghastly scenes of sex, violence and expletives. None pay off, not even the prolonged finale of a desk-side tryst, complete with a Silly String burst. Despite the (human) comedic talent, only Rudolph lands a single joke. It’s all such a painfully far cry from the heights of the Henson empire. As Rowlf the Dog once sang, “I hope that something better comes along.”

n books and movies, Tom Clancy’s CIA character Jack Ryan has fueled series already — and he’s now on his fifth portrayer as he enters the streaming-show universe.

First came Alec Baldwin, then Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine ... and now, the analyst-turned-field-agent stays on the relatively inexperienced side as John Krasinski assumes the role in “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” which Amazon debuts Friday, Aug. 31. Being released in full that day, the eight-episode first season removes Ryan from desk work, sending the ex-Marine overseas after his fact-crunching uncovers a terrorist plot against America.

“Paramount owned some rights to Jack Ryan because that studio produced the movies,” explains executive producer Carlton Cuse. “The last movie didn’t do that well financially, and I think they felt they weren’t going to be able to justify the cost to make more features (about Ryan), so they gave the project to their TV division — and in turn, the TV division approached Graham and me and offered us the project.” “Graham” is fellow executive producer Graham Roland, who previously worked with Cuse on “Lost” and brought his own military background to “Jack Ryan” as a Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq. Like Cuse, he’s a longtime fan of

Clancy’s novels. “Most of his books I read, I read in the ’90s as a kid,” Roland reflects. “I went back and read some after (being in) the military, primarily for this project, and I think a lot of it rang true. “He got a lot of the details right that I think a lot of other writers would not invest that much time or research in. He’s one of the most popular writers among the military. Almost every other (member) who came up in my generation has been affected either by the movies or the books prior to their service.” Other familiar characters transitioning from the Clancy stories into the series include CIA higher-up James Greer (now played by Wendell Pierce) and Ryan’s doctor

love interest Cathy Mueller (Abbie Cornish). The cast also includes Timothy Hutton, Blair Brown and Peter Fonda. Recently both director and star of the hit movie “A Quiet Place,” Krasinski also is an executive producer of “Jack Ryan.” He’s now filming the already-ordered Season 2 in South America, and Cuse credits his versatility: “In Hollywood, it’s very easy to be typecast, and John has done an incredible job of changing people’s perception of him. Not only has he altered himself physically, but there’s a lot more to him than just Jim in ‘The Office.’ I think he felt he had a lot more in his tank, and he’s proven that that’s the case.”
