Guillermo del Toro passionately pushes for gender equality BY ADAM EGAN The Associated Press

VENICE, Italy — Guillermo del Toro says a push for gender equality in Hollywood “is beyond a gesture, it’s a need.” The Mexican director behind the Oscar-winning “The Shape of Water” was speaking recently at the Venice International Film Festival, where he is head of this year’s jury. In a passionate speech during the jury press conference, de Toro said: “The goal has to be clear and has to remain to be 50/50 by 2020.” “It’s a real problem we have in the culture in general. Many of the voices that should be heard, need to be heard,” he said. “It

needs to be solved in every one of our pertinent departments with strength and resolve.” This year’s jury consists of five women and four men in an effort to readdress the imbalance that has occurred in previous years. Australian actress Naomi Watts is on the panel — an experience she hopes will be “life altering.” “To sit in a disciplined way and spend the next 10 days watching two to three films a day is extraordinary and I have just never had that opportunity. And to be amongst this group of people on this panel and with Guillermo leading it, I think it’s going to be a

really unique and really new experience.” Fellow jury member, New Zealand comedy director Taika Waititi, joked that while comedy was his field of expertise, he was the right man for the job. “I have a very sensitive meter for tragedy and I like to think of myself sort of like the Tchaikovsky of comedy,” he said. Also on this jury is Taiwanese actress Sylvia Chang, Danish actress Trine Dyrholm, Polish filmmaker Malgorzata Szumowska, French actress Nicole Garcia, Italian filmmaker Paolo Genovese and Austrian actor Christoph Waltz.

The theatrical, character-rich “Ghosts” is where the Split Enz influence — or is that Liam’s more experimental side? — is clearest, while album finale “Hold Her Close” is a lullaby that includes practical tips for parents. As with any music involving a Finn, the vocals are one of the main reasons for listening and the father-son combo more than meets expectations. Neil’s voice is still a tad sweeter but Liam’s phrasing is very similar and no less expressive and they complete each other fabulously. Ideal for late-night listening, “Lightsleeper” demonstrates that with talents such as these at hand, it makes sense to keep it all in the family.

‘re:member’ Mercury KX

Icelandic composer Olafur Arnalds goes far beyond the use of innovative software involving self-playing pianos on “re:member,” a wistful album also incorporating various string ensembles, fast and slow beats and even the human voice as it alternates between being buoyant and calm. Probably best heard on the track “they sink,” Stratus, the software Arnalds developed with Halldor Eldjarn, allows him to set values like rhythm and tempo to form a three-element creative loop with a pair of selfplaying pianos: they respond to his keyboard playing while Arnalds is in turn affected by their notes and chords. The multi-part title track launches the album as a good sampler of the rest of the record. A swirling string section latches onto a gentle piano figure, what sounds like the Stratus is soon enveloped by watery sounds, the strings make an expanding return and restless drums boost the intensity. The fade is short and definitive. “unfold” retains some of the opener’s elements but English singer Sohn’s layers of wordless vocals over the last minute imbue the pulsing tune with mystery and passion. “saman” is among the album’s calmest inlets, a brief composition of soothing piano sounds, “ekki hugsa” is Arnalds at his most intensely hypnotic and the arrangement on “undir” goes the whole nine yards in just over 6 1/2 minutes. their parents’ (or grandparents’) generation. The record was a fun, florid ‘60sand-’70s throwback brimming with melodies, hooks, harmonies and a hefty dose of psychedelic weirdness. The ambitious duo, now 21 and 19, have gone straight to the rock musical phase of their career. “Go to School” (4AD) is a sprawling concept record about the adolescent struggles of a chimpanzee raised as a human boy. And as might be expected with a conceit like that, it allows the D’Addarios to go full throttle with the theatrical themes and grandiose production they experimented with on their debut. The chimp’s father is played by Twigs hero Todd Rundgren, another pop purist who took the form to far-out places. While the brothers have said they’re striving for Sondheim, at its most overwrought, “Go to School” is more reminiscent of Meatloaf’s “Bat Out of Hell” — produced by Rundgren. The striving love song “Queen of My School” is sparkling power pop. “Rock Dreams” is a blast of bombast. And “The Fire” packs an emotional punch, with a flash of violence at school, “where everyone was pushing” our furry hero. “Lightsleeper” is the result of another crowded house at the Finn residence. The album principals, father Neil and son Liam, get the rest of the family involved — mother Sharon, son Elroy, nephew Harper — and also provide room and board to one of Neil’s new Fleetwood Mac bandmates, Mick Fleetwood. On the surface, “Lightsleeper” is closer to the Finn family’s foundational Split Enz era than to the more renowned Crowded House productions, with dreamy atmospheres, multi-section song structures and hazy shades of melody providing the framework, not tight pop songs with instantly memorable refrains. Most of the tracks are father-and-son co-writes, but Neil wrote album opener “Prelude-Island of Peace” with an uplifting, congenial choir, as a gift for Liam’s wedding. “Meet Me In The Air” follows, its relaxed harmonies harking back to the “Surf’s Up”-period Beach Boys, while “Where’s My Room,” which seems to describe a musician’s unenviable condition near the end of a long tour, begins with what sounds like an updated Roland drum machine and, over seven minutes across various “move-

Stapleton is vying for entertainer of the year, male vocalist of the year, single of the year for “Broken Halos,” album of the year for “From A Room: Volume 2” and song of the year for “Broken Halos.” It was his third nomination for entertainer of the year and fourth consecutive for male vocalist. Producer and musician Dann Huff received four nominations, including musician of the year, single of the year for “Drinkin’ Problem,” album of the year for “Graffiti U,” and album of the year for “Life Changes.” Huff has won musician of the year three other times. Kingsley: I wanted to nail Eichmann to gates of Auschwitz BY JOHN CARUCCI The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Ben Kingsley says he didn’t portray Adolf Eichmann out of love or admiration. Rather, he wanted to “nail him to the gates of Auschwitz.” The Oscar-winning Kingsley has tackled historical figures before, including Mahatma Gandhi, Otto Frank and Simon Wiesenthal. Playing Eichmann in “Operation Finale” produced an entirely different feeling in him.

The story takes place fifteen years after the end of World War II. A team of Mossad agents travel to Argentina with the extremely dangerous mission of smuggling Eichmann out of the country to bring him to justice in Israel. Kingsley has dedicated his performance to Holocaust survivor and activist Elie Wiesel. The film hits theaters Aug. 29. It also stars Oscar Isaac, Nick Kroll and Melanie Laurent.

‘Papillon’ remake is handsome but slow BY LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

Danish director Michael Noer’s “Papillon “ remake, adapted from both Henri Charriere’s autobiography and the 1973 Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman film, is a sumptuous-looking but slowmoving prison drama that at times will have you dreaming about an escape of your own. Charlie Hunnam stars as Papillon, nicknamed for the butterfly tattoo on his chest. He’s an expert safecracker in Paris who is framed for murder in 1931 by his underworld boss and sent off to a prison camp in French Guiana where he makes an alliance with a fellow inmate while plotting his exit. The inmate, Louis Dega (Rami Malek), is a wealthy artist and forger who has a roll of cash hidden in a delicate place and who is too small and weak to keep it safe on his own. So “Papi” becomes his protector, with the understanding that Dega will underwrite his escape. And goodness does Dega need protection. Malek plays him as an elitist intellectual who is convinced that he’ll be out in no time. His arrogance and inability to do anything but throw money at a situation make him an easy target. During one of his first nights in the horrifyingly crowded ship transporting them to the camp, a prisoner cuts open the stomach of the man sleeping next to him, hoping to find hidden cash. Having Papi there ready to throw a punch — or 10 — at any time (even naked in a shower) comes in handy for Dega, certainly. At almost every turn, this strategic codependence seems to actually make more problems for Papi, but he’s a man of his word and over the years develops a soft spot for Dega, who gets slightly less annoying. It’s an incredible true story filmed with breathtaking grace by German cinematographer Hagen Bogdanski (”The Lives of Others”) that while violent and punishing mercifully spares the audience some of the gruesomeness, like when Dega has a bout of diarrhea and loses the money. (There is quite enough blood and gore otherwise.) Hunnam give a fine performance as the unbreakable Papi, an interesting companion character to Hunnam’s Percy Fawcett from “The Lost City of Z.” But unlike the other film, the script for

“Papillon” has chosen to make much of his journey, which includes long stretches in silent solitary confinement, an internal one. The story plays up the cartoonish brutality of the guards and administrators who speak only in cliches and are manically focused on breaking the prisoners, but gives us little insight into what is driving Papi to hold on to sanity and hope. That’s not to say that the film is without some thrilling action (and a mime hallucination). But when the punishment for attempting to escape is two years in solitary confinement, and then five years on the next attempt, you can understand how these escape attempts are few and far between. For as much time as we spend with Papillon in total isolation in silence, you come out of each stint in solitary no wiser about his motivations. The most we get to know about him as a character comes in the first few minutes, when he’s drunkenly stumbling through Paris, open champagne bottle and dancer girlfriend (Eve Hewson) in hand, rejecting her plea to leave city life and move to the country and plotting out how he’s going to be wealthy in six months. Of course Papi’s path was ultimately quite different than what he planned, and if his story is at all intriguing to you, you might be better off sticking with the original.

‘Stand Up to Cancer’ marks its 10th anniversary

decade ago, Katie Couric first helped inspire many celebrities to “Stand Up to Cancer.” Since then, the fundraising event that shares its name with a year-round campaign has aired every other year across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. It does so again as 60-plus outlets — including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox — simultaneously present the special Friday, Sept. 7, with actor Bradley Cooper an executive producer again, as numerous personalities highlight advances made in cancer research through donations pledged by individuals and organizations ... amounting to more than $480 million over the past 10 years. “I think milestones are really important and

valuable when measuring success and taking stock,” Stand Up to Cancer co-founder Couric reflects. “This is an opportunity to celebrate our success and commit to the future as well. I could not be more proud of what has been accomplished by a whole host of people. It takes a village to come up with better cancer treatment, and I think we’ve galvanized not just a village, but an entire international community.” Stars slated to participate in this year’s “Stand Up to Cancer” special include Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Keith Urban, Kathy Bates and Marlee Matlin. The initiative also involves “Dream Teams” of experts in medicine and science; the pancreatic cancer team is a joint venture

with the UK-Lustgarten Foundation, and the cancer immunology team also encompasses the Cancer Research Institute. As she reflects on Stand Up to Cancer’s history, Couric notes how gratified she is “to see how many drugs have been approved by the FDA, to see how many people have gone to get screenings, to see how technology has turbocharged research. This is an opportunity to really revel in what we’ve been able to do.” Couric cites former Vice President Joseph Biden and philanthropist Sean Parker among others who are “really focusing on cancer. There is so much happening in the world of cancer research, with technology and data and basic science. We call it

‘convergence.’ where all these different disciplines can really get together and help unravel the mystery of this disease. “Ever since Jay was diagnosed,” Couric says in reference to her late husband Jay Monahan, “I’ve seen so many changes. It’s not so tumor-specific. We’re looking at treatments that may help cure melanoma or may help cure another kind of cancer. There’s a lot of intersectionality, as they say, and we’re really starting to understand the mechanics of this hideous disease that can outwit its most powerful foes — and to figure out how all these different approaches can stop it in its tracks. If this is the first line in my obituary, I’ll be very, very proud.”
