‘Forever Turned Around’ Secretly Canadian

Indie-rock duo Whitney may have a light, easy sound, but that isn’t an indication of the themes they touch on or emotions they evoke. The pair peaked interest in their debut album “Light Upon the Lake,” and with “Forever Turned Around,” they’ve proved that the success of their first wasn’t a fluke. Comprised of Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, the mid-20-year-olds write well beyond their years. The 10-track sophomore album is one that is both melancholy and hopeful, contemplating the impermanence of both love and being. Ehrlich’s distinctive cooing falsetto paired with horns on songs like “Giving Up” and “Friend of Mine” gives their sound its youthful feel, while lines such as “I don’t feel alive but I’ve been living” ground the album in reality. The lyrics are both vulnerable and

GO+TV MIRROR resolute, with choruses that are often astonishingly simple— the repetition of two to five words sung gently by Ehrlich. Simple words follow poignant lines such as in “Valleys (My Love)” when a chorus of “my love” echoes after Ehrlich sings, “I feel like I’m holding on/To a place in your heart that’s long gone.” The album is full of sound, coloring cozy guitar riffs and twinkling keys with strings and brass. ‘Ideal Man’ New West Records

On “Ideal Man,” Andrew Combs trades in some of the high-gloss finish of his previous work for a trebly kaleidoscope of sounds that underscores a beguiling set of highly-emotional tunes. Combs, Texas-born and Nashvillebased, shaped by his recent dedication to painting as well as the birth of his daughter, says the brushwork increased his sensitivity while the parenting responsibilities seem to have deepened the sentimental connections

of the songs to his own surroundings and the wider world. The arrangements mix psychedelia, acoustic and electric sounds, a handful of classic keyboards and generous reverb. Along with Combs’ sensitive but resolute singing, they keep “Ideal Man” far from any sappiness, despite the depth of emotions. Opener “Stars of Longing” seems conjoined at the hip with the title track that follows it, both songs forming a sort of statement of purpose. The first imbues its lesson of “there’s only love” with fuzzy guitars and a cracking snare, while “Ideal Man” lists hunters, coyotes and drunken poets as possible characters for “just a stranger waiting my turn to be somebody.” Other highlights include the desperate “Shipwreck Man” and its sweet backing vocals, the vulnerable “Hide and Seek” and “Firestarter,” where lament, caution, resignation and recrimination combine for a bitter but prudent farewell as Combs’ voice expertly travels across a full range of feelings. Closer “Golden,” one of the record’s most tender moments, ponders the inevitability of his child’s growth while lending support for the journey — “One foot in front of the other/I’ll be right here/If there’s too much ground to cover.” “Ideal Man” is an exceptional example of quality songwriting and adventurous musicality.

Forget country, outlaw country or whatever Sturgill Simpson’s genrepushing music has been categorized as. “Sound & Fury” is melt-your-face-off fuzz rock. Simpson describes it as “sleazy, steamy rock ‘n’ roll” and he’s right. “Sound & Fury” is as much country music as Dolly Parton is punk rock. Sometimes when an artist takes a left turn, they come off as a poser. Not Simpson. He feels right at home with “Sound & Fury.” It serves as the soundtrack to a Netflix anime film of the same name being released the same day. The record was recorded primarily at the McGuire Motor Inn in Waterford, Michigan, because, well, why not? The track “Make Art Not Friends” is as close to a mission statement from Simpson as he’s ever come. He may not make many friends from those wanting more country from “Sound & Fury,” but it’s clear Simpson doesn’t care much. Simpson was never a conventional country singer, even as he won “Best Country Album” and “Album of the Year” at the 2016 Grammy’s. If there were any fans who were hoping he would turn more country and less rock, they are going to be sorely disappointed, angry maybe, with this one. Maybe that’s just what Simpson wanted.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Having played nearly every corner of the Earth in a nearly 50-year career, the rock band Kiss is taking its show to a new place — under the sea, where they will perform for great white sharks and eight fans separated from them by a small submarine. As part of a promotion by Airbnb, the fans and Kiss will travel Nov. 18 in separate boats off the coast of southern Australia. While Kiss stays above board on one vessel, the fans will be lowered beneath the surface of the water from a second boat into the viewing sub in an area known for shark activity. Using underwater speakers, Kiss will begin playing, and the sound will be audible to the submerged fans and the sharks. “I was a little taken aback by it, but they explained that sharks are attracted to low frequencies and so they’re attracted to rock ‘n’ roll,” singer and guitarist Paul Stanley told The Associated Press. “Since we’re going to be in Australia, it gives a whole new meaning to doing a concert down under.”

The first-come, first-served event costs $50, which is half the price of Kiss tickets in even the worst nosebleed seats in the last row at Madison Square Garden. Proceeds will go to charity, the company said. Reservations can be made starting at 6 p.m. on airbnb.com/KISS Oct. 14. The event will take place in the Indian Ocean off Port Lincoln, South Australia. Kiss will be in full makeup and costumes for the performance, which will be at least four songs. “I’m not sure how much of us the sharks can take,” Stanley said. “I’m hoping they know ‘Rock And Roll All Nite.’” Stanley said Kiss bassist Gene Simmons has recovered after having some kidney stones removed recently, and should be ready to perform well before the shark show. “I tend to think he just ate gravel,” Stanley joked. The event is part of Airbnb Animal Experiences, and is designed to have people entertain animals instead of the other way around, the company said in a news release. As strange as it sounds, underwater concerts are not

new. The Underwater Music Festival has been held for the past 35 years in the Florida Keys. The shark show has untapped potential if they want to do it again sometime. After all, what other concert could potentially bring together Great White and Air Supply?

Hale has earned many fans by playing a morally questionable, immature manchild in both âArrested Developmentã and âVeep.ã He switched gears to play the lovable and innocent âForky,ã who embarks on a road trip with Woody, Buzz and the gang in âToy Story 4,ã which is now available on digital, 4K Disc and Blu-Ray. Hale says he was thrilled to get the call to play the handmade, talking utensil. Heás won two Emmys for playing Gary Walsh, the personal assistant to Vice President-turned-President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in HBOás âVeep,ã which ended its run this year. He just didnát ever understand the abuse. He was always dysfunctional, bounced back, had rose-colored glasses. Never, just never saw the dysfunction. What Selena did to him in the end — to me — was the biggest gift he could have gotten because he was in an addictive cycle with her. He was obsessed with her and that was the only thing that was gonna break that cycle because — spoiler! — when he comes back 20 years later and goes to her funeral, I donát think that was about her. That was about him because he had spent a long time in jail and I think waking up to the fact like, àWow, when I look at the cycle Iáve been in for the past how many years...á and he did that more to forgive and for himself.

AP: And did you think the series ending was fitting? Hale: Hereás a picture of a person who has spent their entire life narcissistically just trying to get ahead, only thinking about themselves, backstabbing, selfish, treating people awfully, all that stuff. And here the end result of that is isolation and sadness. Thatás where the series ended up. She was fully isolated. I think youáre going to reap what you sow if you sow that stuff. Youáre going to reap sadness isolation. If you sow kindness and giving of others, youáre going to reap a different result. And I love that. Itás a beautiful picture of that. AP: Unlike âVeep,ã “Toy Story 4ã has such a positive message. Hale: Itás really special... You see these characters who live life together and they always have each otherás backs. Gustafson, the Boal Mansion will present its 2019-2020 Concert Series opening with a recital by members of the Allegria Ensemble at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. It will be in tandem with the Renaissance Fair events at the mansion in October. In the spring, the mansion will present three more concerts, and all the proceeds will be spent on refurbishing the 1922 Steinway Grand piano in the ballroom and the 19th century harp discovered

Country-music icons’ stories fuel ‘Patsy & Loretta’ on Lifetime To become Patsy Cline for a cable movie, Megan Hilty made a deep dive into the country-music icon’s life, times and songs. Debuting Saturday, Oct. 19, Lifetime’s made-inNashville “Patsy & Loretta” recounts the friendship between Cline and Loretta Lynn (played by Hilty’s fellow Broadway veteran Jessie Mueller, of “Waitress” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”). They were at very different career stages when they met, with Cline well-established and Lynn just starting out ... and after Cline’s tragic death in a 1963 plane crash, Lynn carried the mantle of accomplished women in country for both of them.

“I normally have a really hard time watching myself,” friendly “Smash” alum Hilty says, “but with this, I think because I look so different, I was able to sit back and enjoy it. When they first approached me about it, I said, ‘How much hair is going into the wigs?’ I feel like no matter how good the script and everything else is, if you don’t have a good wig, people are going to be focused on that the entire time. And they told me that was a massive priority.” Still, Hilty understood there was more to the part than the look and “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces” and “Walkin’ After Midnight” are among the Cline classics she renders. “I didn’t really know about her life,” she

admits, “and the more research I did, the more madly in love I fell with her. I read two different books, and I did not like one of them very much because it seemed like a lot of gossip. Then I read another biography on her that made sense, and I watched anything of her that I could get my hands on; it’s mostly of her performances and not much patter, so the personal stuff was a lot of guesswork.” Reuniting Hilty with “Smash” executive producer Neil Meron (in his first solo effort after the passing of his longtime producing colleague Craig Zadan), “Patsy & Loretta” was directed by someone who knew its background: Callie Khouri, the Oscar-winning

“Thelma & Louise” writer who created and produced the drama series “Nashville.” The result, Hilty maintains, was “the most pleasant working experience I’ve ever had. Everybody on that set was legitimately upset that it was ending, and you dream of having that kind of environment.” Cline and Lynn’s daughters — respectively, Julie Fudge and Patsy Lynn Russell — are co-producers of “Patsy & Loretta,” which made Hilty even more determined to get her task on the film right. Cline was “a real person, with a real legacy to uphold, and I wanted to be extremely respectful of that,” Hilty reflects. “I think the script does her justice.”
