NEW YORK â&#x20AC;&#x201D; James Gunn was fired from Marvelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Guardians of the Galaxy,â&#x20AC;? but now heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headed to DC Comics. Warner Bros. on Tuesday confirmed that Gunn will write the script to the studioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next â&#x20AC;&#x153;Suicide Squadâ&#x20AC;? installment. In July, Disney fired Gunn from the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Guardiansâ&#x20AC;? franchise he shepherded after jokes he wrote involving rape and pedophilia on Twitter from 2009-2012

resurfaced. The creative force between the two hugely popular â&#x20AC;&#x153;Guardiansâ&#x20AC;? films, Gunnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s firing prompted its own backlash. The cast issued a statement of support for Gunn, imploring Disney to reinstate him. But instead, Gunn will take over â&#x20AC;&#x153;Suicide Squad,â&#x20AC;? the DC supervillain team-up franchise. The first film earned $747 million in 2016 but drew withering reviews. Gunn is expected to take an entirely new approach, and potentially direct.

‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ Sony Legacy

Loretta Lynn, now 86, hasn’t been touring since she suffered a stroke in 2017, but the Kentucky singer-songwriter’s creative output remains strong on her new album, “Wouldn’t It Be Great.” For years, Lynn has been recording her extensive catalog of songs with producing help from John Carter Cash and her daughter, Patsy Lynn Russell, ensuring that her legacy as one of America’s greatest songwriters and singers will continue for the next generation even as she’s had to slow down her public appearances. Recorded before her stroke, the album was delayed a year as she focused on her physical health. The collection of Lynn-penned songs stays true to the country music icon’s favored subject matters, from love, heartaches, drunk husbands and angry women, but also family and spirituality. Half new songs and half previously recorded, her high Appalachian vocals are unmistakably clear and refreshing with simple bluegrass and acoustic instrumentation that highlights the lyric and storytelling behind her nearly 60-year career. For a woman who has outlived her husband, as well as some of her children, her loneliness and pain is heartbreaking on a song like “I’m Dying for Someone to Live For.” “Ruby’s Stool” sounds like a companion to her classic “Fist City,” as Lynn’s feisty side comes out in a barroom dispute with another woman. “Wouldn’t It Be Great” is a sorrowful plea to her late husband Doolittle to give up drinking for the sake of their relationship and contains little gems of simple and personal writing, such as “love went to waste when my sexy lace couldn’t turn your face.” On “Ain’t No Time to Go,” Lynn tenderly sings with just a soft banjo plucking in the background to “stay with me a little bit longer.” It feels like a promise to her fans that she’s got much more to say if they keep listening. — By Kristin M. ‘Ruby’ Artistry Music

Macy Gray sounds mainly joyful and enthusiastic on “Ruby” and the zest evident across her 10th album, even when the theme is misfortune or heartbreak, is infectious. Her trademark jazzy soul and R&B foundations are accounted for but the arrangements have a deceptively light touch and let Gray’s vocals and effervescent personality shine through. Opener “Buddha” features a guitar solo by Gary Clark Jr. and background vocals with a gospel feel, alternating an uplifting refrain of being “alright now” with the knowing “our days are numbered.” The ultra-romantic “Over You” — “I haven’t had a drink since my last one/No clouds in my sky but I’m on one” — has a dynamic horn arrangement and a catchy refrain and sounds most like her early hits. It’s followed by “White Man” — no extra credit for guessing who Gray is singing about — whose hatred, judgment and offensive chatter may end up hurting him.

“Sugar Daddy” is a bubbly collaboration with Meghan Trainor, whose influence is evident already on the piano introduction and cooing backing vocals, while “When It Ends” is all drama underpinned by a slinky bass line. “But He Loves Me” is such a plausible description of when our instinct for self-preservation fails us that it sounds almost like a parody, while reggaetinged closer “Witness” is among the album’s musical peaks. New York-born Paul Collins has been carrying the torch of power pop for decades in bands like The Nerves and The Beat as well as a lengthy solo career. In just 33 minutes, “Out of My Head”

completes an 11-stop journey that’s loaded with melodies and hooks that make it one of the most enchanting records in his catalog. Collins sings, plays guitars and drums and is assisted mainly by bassist Paul Stingo, who also adds delightful supporting vocals. The jagged guitar solo on “In and Out of My Head,” the opening track, mirrors the confusion of someone who is trapped in feelings from a past still haunting the present. Blink and you’ll miss “Go,” 95 seconds of energetic drums and strums backing a typically adolescent lyric that any heartbroken adult could sing, too. In a curious case of coincidence, or something else, there are three songs in row each lasting 2:23 — the “Kind of Girl” could play as Charlie Brown makes another failed attempt to approach the Little Red-Haired Girl; “Just Too Bad You’re Leaving” has a perfectly melancholy melody; and “Emily” applies gentle Hollies-like harmonies to a theme of uncertainty and ambiguity. “You Belong to Me” describes an obsession with possession, and the noirish, bass-driven “Killer Inside” disturbingly suggests we’re all walking around with one within us. There’s a more reflective approach on the last three songs, a sudden power cut that may have been more effective had “Lost Again,” “Tick Tock” and “Beautiful Eyes” been interspersed among the faster ones. “Out of My Head” could have been recorded anytime over the past 50 years and it’s a blast that Collins is still making albums like it today. — By Pablo Gorondi, The Associated

Holliday said there will be some dogs from Mending Hearts at Fear ’N’ Beer. She noted that last year some applications to adopt dogs were placed at the event and four dogs were later adopted because of it. She is thankful this event assists such a worthy cause. “They (Mending Hearts) do so much with very little help and we’re glad to be able to help them,” she said. Pairing a good cause with brews, music, scares and fun is what Fear’N’Beer is all about. Come in your scariest costume — or just as yourself — but plan to have a good time. “Expect good beer and a great time. Costumes are optional, but fun is mandatory. Don’t just attend. Contribute to the experience,” said Burk.

ABC clearly wanted to stay in business with Nathan Fillion. The network canceled “Castle” in 2016 after eight seasons, but continued to employ the actor in such series as “Modern Family” and “American Housewife,” paving a path to another show of his own: “The Rookie,” which premieres Tuesday, Oct. 16. Fillion stars as John Nolan, whose brush with mortality prompts him to become a police officer, though he’s well past the age when such a career typically begins. Viewed skeptically by his peers, he’s determined to prove himself ... a constant challenge. Fillion reflects that he likens “The Rookie” to

“a new norm that we are experiencing culturally. I remember when marriage was the norm, and then divorce became the norm, and now it’s the doover ... the reboot. Now it’s, ‘I got fired. What’s my next job going to be? I’m no longer a dad. I’m no longer a husband. Now what am I?’ And I think this is relatable in that sense. I don’t think everybody is going to become a rookie cop, but I think there are a lot of people who are either having this reinvention experience or at least know someone who has.” With Richard T. a first. Here I am, at 47 years old, still experiencing firsts. I love it.” Fillion knows the general feeling of being a rookie. He notes, “I was on a soap opera (‘One Life to Live’). I think if there is any kind of like intense training for acting, daytime drama is what that is. You make a 44-minute program every day of the week; sometimes more than that. “It’s a lot to do, and it’s hard work ... but by the end of it, you are ready to attack anything. Not a day goes by in this career of mine where I don’t use something I learned on the soap in front of or behind the camera.”
