‘First Man’ blasts off behind ‘Venom,’ BY LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — The Neil Armstrong film “First Man” settled for a third-place landing at the North American box office in its opening weekend in theaters. The Ryan Gosling-starrer and a host of newcomers, like the familyfriendly “Goosebumps” sequel and the neo-noir mystery “Bad Times at the El Royale,” couldn’t unseat last week’s top two films, “Venom” and “A Star Is Born,” which again took first and second place. As the month of October careens toward a box office record, the crowded marketplace can be a blessing or a curse for some films in their first weekends, although the hope is that they will play for weeks to come.

Such is the idea for Universal Pictures’ “First Man,” which took flight over the weekend with everything to its advantage — prestige, good reviews (88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), a movie star (Gosling) and an Oscar-winning director (Damien Chazelle). Studios estimated last week that “First Man” earned $16.5 million in ticket sales from 3,640 North American theaters, and $25 million worldwide. That was on par with expectations, but not exactly an eye-popping number for a space epic that cost nearly $60 million to produce. For Universal Pictures’ president of domestic distribution Jim Orr, the box office intake for a film like “First Man,” which primarily appeals to older audiences not inclined to rush out to a movie theater on the first weekend, is going to be “a marathon not a sprint.”

Nostalgia has been a focal feature of Rod Stewart’s songwriting even as far back as 1971’s “Maggie May,” and some of the best tunes on “Blood Red Roses,” his 30th studio album, explore that same vein. “Farewell” pays tribute to a friend through a poignant melody and reminisces about their shared London youth. “Honey Gold” features sweeping strings, an electric guitar echoing the one on “Tonight’s the Night” and one of his clearest vocals on the record as Stewart honors an unidentified “woman of the world” who’s been around apparently since his time in The Faces. Most of the tracks were written by Sir Roderick himself and long-time associate Kevin Savigar, but Stewart also gives a touching performance on “Grace,” a song by Frank and Sean O’Meara and a tragic, true-life story about the briefest of marriages during the 1916 Irish insurrection against British rule. “Didn’t I,” about parents struggling to cope with their daughter’s addiction; the soulish disco of “Give Me Love;” the lively, Motown-inspired “Rest of My Life;” and “Look in Her Eyes,” with sweet backing vocals from Bridget Cady, also hit the spot, but the tender “Julia,” another nostalgic chapter, is marred by distracting whitenoise-like guitar and blues classic “Rollin’ & Tumblin’” struggles to turn on square wheels. A foray into EDM and the Stones-like “Vegas Shuffle” grate. ABBA covers by Cher. Seriously, who wanted this? Anyone? Crickets? We thought so. Well, Cher, we guess, wanted it, maybe to buy a new yacht or fulfill some label requirement. Warner Bros. Records clearly did, too, if only to profit on the icon’s appearance in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” The whiff of a quick buck is so sour here that it taints the Swedish band’s bubbly compositions. Like one song’s chorus goes: “Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie!” Cher offers a very deliberate, 10track collection of classic ABBA songs, including “Waterloo,” ‘’Mamma Mia” and “SOS.” Inexplicably, she returns to “Fernando” for another swing, having already supplied a version for the film’s soundtrack. That cover is pro-

duced by former ABBA member Benny Andersson; the rest of the album is produced by Cher’s longtime collaborator Mark Taylor. All the versions are fantastically well produced, mixed and arranged, but there’s a strange coldness in these tracks, as if all the fun was drained. Cher takes them all very, very seriously, like they were tunes by Stephen Sondheim instead of frothy disco songs. Her take on “The Winner Takes It All” is especially preposterous and pompous. Only one song, “One of Us,” the final one on the album, reinterprets the original into something somewhat stirring and thoughtful. The cleverness of the “Mamma Mia!” films is that familiar pop songs from the 1970s get sung by movie stars in a lush romantic comedy. That’s dif-

From the unforgettable use of “Don’t Stop Believin’” on the last “The Sopranos” episode to the way his former band found a new, sound-alike singer on the internet and, last year, Journey’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Perry and his prolonged absence have been often on our minds. “Traces” is Perry’s first solo album since 1994 and, cliched as it may sound, it really is a very personal work with some songs that would have sounded out of place on a Journey record. Made in part to fulfill a promise to his partner who succumbed to breast cancer in 2012, “Traces” is dominated by ballads in many guises by someone whose quasi-operatic voice made him one of their most memorable interpreters. Launching with the first single, “No Erasin’,” immediately injects “Traces” with nostalgia through an updated recreation of a teenage love with an unerringly precise opening line — “I know it’s been a long time comin’.” Perry has said the song was meant to evoke a high school reunion and — along with “We’re Still Here” and “Sun Shines Gray” — it’s the one that most resembles a Journey track. “In The Rain” is the album’s tour de force but sans any bombast, one of Perry’s most emotional vocals supported by a restrained piano-and-strings arrangement emphasizing its anguish: “You got me even though you’re gone.” On “Easy To Love,” Perry’s lead vocals have just a touch of Rod Stewart’s gruffness while his backing vocals are satin smooth and George Harrison’s “I Need You” is transformed into a heartfelt soul ballad. The unique title is symbolic and emphatic of the conservation message Ruiz hopes to convey to audiences. Ruiz lives in State College and serves as Penn State Altoona’s resident scene designer and an assistant teaching professor of theatre and integrative arts. For the first time, morning and matinee performances have been added to expand view opportunities to families, teens and students, Ruiz says, noting more than 200 students are scheduled to attend one show. Puppetry, Ruiz said, expresses creativity and identity and serves as a platform. “In this play that I’ve written, directed and will perform in, it is as if Mother Nature would be able to talk to us in a human voice,” he said. He is joined in the 45-minute production by 10 Penn State students who come from a variety of disciplines. ‘Halloween’ slashes again BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

With hollow eyes and sagging cheeks, the flabby white mask of Michael Myers is horror’s great blank slate. Project your fears here, it says. Myers doesn’t speak. His movements never rise beyond a deliberate gait (well, aside from all the stabbing and strangling). Even his name is purposefully bland. Decades after John Carpenter’s slasher landmark, David Gordon Green has resurrected the faceless Boogeyman of “Halloween” and set him loose on another Halloween night, 40 years later. Time has done little for Michael’s personality. He is still a poor conversationalist. (He hasn’t uttered a word in the intervening decades, says a doctor at the sanatorium that holds him.) He is still handy with a knife.

There are no roman numerals in the title of Green’s film, nor any of those dopey subtitles like 1998’s “Halloween H20.” As if to draw closer to the original (and to ignore the nine sequels and reboots in between), this “Halloween” has simply taken Carpenter’s 1978 title. And with gliding cameras, Carpenter’s score and original cast members Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle (the man under the mask), it has tried very hard to take much more, too. But while Green’s “Halloween,” which he penned with Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley, has faithfully adopted much of what so resonated in Carpenter’s genre-creating film — the stoic killer, the gruesome executions, the suburban nightmares — what makes his “Halloween” such a thrill is how it deviates from its long-ago predecessor. Setting the template for countless slashers to follow, Carpenter’s film often reserved its most painful endings for more promiscuous girls or drug-using teens. As a grim reaper carrying out a metaphorical reckoning, Michael had questionable biases. But what Carpenter did do was equate sex with violence, a connection that Green has elaborated on with a more feminist streak. Having survived the “Babysitter

REVIEW Murders” of 40 years ago, Laurie Strode (a fabulously fierce Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising the role that was her film debut) is now a self-described “twice-divorced basket case” living in a run-down house on the outskirts of the fictional Haddonfield, Illinois. She has turned her home into a training ground and domestic fortification for the second coming of Michael she’s always been sure will happen. Her daughter (Judy Greer) and her sonin-law (Toby Huss) have grown tired of Strode’s fanatical survivalist paranoia. Their high-school daughter, Allyson (Andi Matichak) isn’t so sure, and she naturally gravitates to the grandmother she’s been shielded from. The curiosity of “Serial”-like podcast journalists (Jefferson Hall, Rhian Rees) introduces us to both the locked-up Myers and the withdrawn Strode. Before curtly dismissing them, Strode insists their investigation into Myers is pointless. Hunt evil, she believes, don’t analyze it. It’s a message peppered throughout “Halloween” with clear reference to today. Needless to say, both those who dismiss Strode’s deep-seated trauma and those who would rather study evil than confront it are gonna get their comeuppance. When Michael is transferred to another facility, hell predictably breaks loose. Once Michael is again stalking the suburban streets of Haddonfield, custom kitchens start seeing their cutlery disappear, and the shadows and closets of seemingly safe neighborhoods are again rife with danger. Evil — soulless and unkillable — lurks everywhere, even if it does wear a silly mask. Green, the sometimes brilliant, sometimes confounding filmmaker of art-house indies (”George Washington”), broader comedies (”Pineapple Express”) and, more recently, a few starry studio projects can’t recreate the eeriness of Carpenter’s original. But he pumps more blood into the story, both literally and figuratively. Foggy nights and gas-station bathrooms turn predictably gory, more so than the original. But the scenes that fall between those foreboding, twinkling piano notes have far more warmth and spirit than you’d expect. You almost wish Green — easily the most talented filmmaker in the franchise since Carpenter — was instead making something original here on the same streets, with the same cast (including the scenestealing Miles Robbins) and none of the skull crushing. But there are rituals to observe, and this “Halloween” lives up to its name.

continues the ‘Vampire Diaries’ saga

With “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” both over, it’s only logical that The CW would want to keep the popular horror franchise going. It does that with the premiere of returning creator-producer Julie Plec’s “Legacies” Thursday, Oct. 25. The new show follows Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell, continuing her “Originals” role) as she enters the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted — which obviously takes its name from Stefan Salvatore of “The Vampire Diaries.” Hope joins other descendants of vampires, werewolves and witches as they become educated in controlling their supernatural ways. Plec explains that as the saga is reset just out-

side Mystic Falls, “the locals think it’s a school for rich kids, but inside is a wonderful cast of young, supernatural beings. They’ve either been cursed by genetics or cursed by supernatural bloodlines. They have some element of them that, and were they to unleash it, it could be a dark thing ... and they all have it in them to be the villain of our story.” However, adds Plec, “Through love and acceptance and being embraced, and being around like-minded people with tolerance and all the things that come along with being supernatural, because it’s a boarding school, we are hoping that we can show the path to all of them individually being the hero.”

Actress Russell allows of Hope, “I’ve only played her for a year, and I so fell in love with playing the character. Even in the way she does her makeup and the way she dresses, it’s a little edgier (now). It’s a little more adult. She’s definitely matured and grown up a bit since things that happened to her on ‘The Originals.’ And in her attitude and being in the school itself, it has helped me really navigate how I’m going about playing her in a much different way. “She’s always been mature for her age,” Russell notes. “She’s been through things unimaginable, but she was definitely faced with a little more innocence, even little things. She

had never had her first kiss before, and she was naive and making these bad decisions. And now that she’s kind of grown (and) has been through so much, I really focus on small things.” Matthew Davis also resumes his role as Alaric Saltzman, whose twin daughters Josie and Lizzie (played by Kaylee Bryant and Jenny Boyd) also are among the school’s students. “It’s been a fascinating journey,” Davis reflects. “I remember when I signed on to do just a four-episode arc, and it turned into (being) this regular on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and (a guest on) ‘The Originals,’ and now this. It was clear to me that Alaric’s story was not finished.”
