Awards buzz is icing for Krasinski and ‘A Quiet Place’ BY LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — John Krasinski is still pinching himself over the critical and financial success of his experimental thriller “A Quiet Place,” but the Cinderella year is not over yet. With awards season heating up, “A Quiet Place,” has found its own spot in the conversation. Krasinski who co-wrote, directed and starred in the film opposite his wife, Emily Blunt, is only humbled. “It’s nothing short of overwhelming,” Krasinski said by phone recently. “Emily and I really are still digesting the fact that we made this small little special movie that some people really connected to. This was literally a meditation on parenting!” “A Quiet Place” is a mostly silent horror film about a family (Krasinski, Blunt, Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds) trying to live among creatures that attack and kill at the smallest sound. It became a surprise box-office phenomenon when it was released in April, grossing $338.6 million in worldwide ticket sales off a production budget of $17 million. It is now available on home video and streaming, and a sequel is already in the works. Critics loved its high concept thrills, too, and while many have offered their praise, a certain phone call stands out for Krasinski — the one he got from his favorite director, and friend, Paul Thomas

Anderson. “It was probably 30 minutes long about how much he loved the movie and how much it meant to him and how much he wished movies like this happened every Friday. I genuinely blacked out on that phone call,” Krasinski said. “He said, ‘I’ll tell you the best compliment I can give you: As I was walking back to my car I thought, OK, I need to get back to work.’” Anderson actually provided some inspiration for “A Quiet Place.” Krasinski said he studied the opening of “There Will Be Blood” and other modern films that employ silence to figure out how he would approach it in his film. He also looked at “Jaws,” ‘’Rosemary’s Baby” the films of Alfred Hitchcock for ideas in tensionbuilding. “Jaws” was one of Krasinski’s biggest touchstones, and, oddly enough, the first movie he and Blunt watched together when they had just started dating. “It’s a perfect film,” he said. “It’s not about a shark, it’s about these characters trying to overcome fears that they’re running away from and at some point those fears are going to manifest themselves in the most bizarre ways.” In that same way, “A Quiet Place,” to him, is about parenting. He had been sent a script to look at and had an idea to rewrite and refocus around those anxieties. “I was actually holding my three-week-

NEW YORK — Michael Meyers — or is it Jamie Lee Curtis? — can’t be stopped. “Halloween” dominated the North American box office for the second straight weekend, carving up an estimated $32 million in ticket sales. The top four films were all unchanged at the North American box office, according to last week’s estimates, as Hollywood left “Halloween” to dominate the pre-trick-or-treating weekend. The sequel to John Carpenter’s 1978 original, starring the 59-year-

old Curtis as Laurie Strode, last week notched the biggest opening ever for a film with a female lead older than 55. The Blumhouse Productions film, distributed by Universal Pictures, is already one of the highest grossing slasher films ever, with $126.7 million in ticket sales (plus another $45.6 million international) on just a $10 million budget. “Halloween,” directed by David Gordon Green, slid a relatively modest 58 percent — especially good for a horror release — after setting a record for an October debut two weeks ago.

We had just had our second daughter,” he said. “Reading a story about parents doing whatever it took to protect their kids was exactly what I was living through.” Krasinski wasn’t even supposed to direct the film at the outset. The actor and writer, probably best known as Jim on the American version of “The Office,” had previously directed two films — a David Foster Wallace adaptation (”Brief Interviews with Hideous Men”) and an indie family drama (“The Hollars”). Not exactly the kind of calling cards that would prove he could handle a VFXheavy, big studio genre film. It was Blunt who encouraged him to put his name in for it. “She said, ‘I’ve never seen you so lit up like this, I’ve never seen you so passionate about something,’” Krasinski recalled. “And it’s true, she knew that it was a very personal story. I was basically writing a love letter to my kids.” And to his shock, executives at Paramount and Platinum Dunes were behind him. Blunt also was the driving force behind her own involvement. Krasinski was too scared to even let her read the script while he was working on it, let alone ask her to be in it. She went so far as to suggest a friend for the role of Evelyn. But then on one cross country flight, she final-

ly read it, and decided to speak up. “She legitimately looked sick at the end of it. I thought she was plane sick, so I reached for a barf bag at the same time she said, ‘You can’t let anyone do this movie.’ And I said, ‘What?’ And it was like a romantic comedy where she was proposing to me,” Krasinski recalled. “She said, ‘You have to let me do this part, you HAVE to let me do it.’ I think I screamed ‘YES’ on a flight from New York to LA.” The film has been in the Oscar conversation since it came out and has continued to pop up on prognosticator lists in Hollywood trades like Variety and awards columns in Vulture and Gold Derby, with special mentions of Blunt’s performance, the effects and the screenplay. Krasinski is currently writing the sequel, which he teased only with his wife’s response to his pitch. “She said, ‘Oh that’s really cool, but it’s not a sequel, it’s like another book in the same world, it feels like another part in the same story,’” he said. As for whether Krasinski is ready for the marathon that is awards season? “Everything is better when Emily is there and the fact that she’s in the conversation for this and for ‘Mary Poppins Returns’? There’s no better person to have by my side for this,” he said. “I’ll be just fine.”

It’s going to be hard for Twenty One Pilots to top the success of their last album. Every tune on “Blurryface” went gold, platinum or, in some cases, multiplatinum — the first album to do so in history. But if anyone’s going to do better, it’s these two guys from Ohio. “Trench,” the 14-track, fifth album from vocalist Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun (as well as songwriting help from Paul Meany), is every bit as good as “Blurryface,” continuing the band’s genre-bending trademark of tackling various styles and showcasing a knack for songwriting. The band comes fast out of the gate with the throbbing bass line of “Jumpsuit” with insecurity in the lyrics (”I can’t believe how much I hate/ Pressures of a new place roll my way”). Then it’s on to Dun’s kinetic drumming on “Levitate,” a blissed-out and terrific “Morph” and The Killerslike, falsetto-fueled “My Blood.” Further ahead, there’s the reggaetinged “Nico and the Niners,” the ‘80ssounding “The Hype” and the complex, constantly shifting “Bandito.” We reach peak Twenty One Pilots on “Pet Cheetah,” an exhilarating and daffy tune that namechecks Jason Statham as it mixes techno, rap and rock, along with a healthy dose of reggae and house. No one out there makes music as thrilling as this. “Trench” is a more low-key album — “Cut My Lip” and “Neon Gravestones” are slow burners — and Joseph and Dun show maturity in not overworking songs, too. The last track, “Leave the City,” is a piano-driven gem with understated drumming and ghostly vocals. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Pilots record without opaque lyrics that connect the songs — “jumpsuit” and “neon” — and the album to a larger fantasy narrative that has spooled out over several albums and onto websites. We’ll leave all those clues — references to Dema and the bishops and Nicolas Bourbaki — to the fans on Reddit. “Trench” also finds Joseph in a confident mood, lyric-wise, even mocking

songwriting itself. “Chorus, verse, chorus, verse/ Now here comes the eight,” he sings on “Levitate.” On “Smithereens,” he croons: “For you, I’d go write a slick song just to show you the world.” Well, he’s certainly done that. ‘Shades’ Provogue

For some masters of the fretboard, changing their guitars is as far as they sometimes seem willing to go to create a different mood. Texan guitar ace Doyle Bramhall II — who also as singer, songwriter and producer has worked with Eric Clapton, Roger Waters and Sheryl Crow, among many others — may also be using different guitars on the 12 tracks on “Shades,” but his conviction and commitment to a wide variety of sounds make him a particularly compelling performer. It’s all rooted in the blues but

“Shades” goes in several directions with nary a misstep, naturally integrating superstar guests like Clapton and Norah Jones, and achieving a steady flow no matter the style. “Everything You Need” has an inspired Clapton solo and soulful R&B sounds to spare like Stevie Wonder, while Bramhall’s vocals mesh perfectly with Jones’ on “Searching for Love,” one of those ballads that make you look around for someone to quickly dance slowly with. “Live Forever” counts on the talents of the Greyhounds, a duo from Austin, Texas, and it sounds like a tune for a band that would have felt at home sharing a stage with the likes of Cream and Spirit, while “Consciousness” features an all-star selection of ‘60s instruments, from the Farfisa organ to a Leslie guitar. Groovy. The Tedeschi Trucks Band, also on his extended list of credits, helps Bramhall close out the album in style with Bob Dylan and The Band’s “Going, Going, Gone” and its sage advice of “Don’t you and your one true

Like in “Anna Karenina,” the characters in “Look Now,” Elvis Costello’s sumptuous new album with The Imposters, are each unhappy in their own way. A woman who laments her deteriorated marriage while doing some renovations around the house (“Stripping Paper”); a dilapidated music-hall singer whose return to showbiz may be brief (“Under Lime”); a daughter pondering her dad’s infidelity (“Photographs Can Lie”); someone grieving the end of the British empire (“I Let the Sun Go Down”) and so on. What make it easy to be sympathetic with even the most pitiable of those in these very human songs are Costello’s elegant melodies and arrangements, which result in a kind of silkier, even more debonair version of “Imperial Bedroom,” his 1982 album produced by recently departed Beatles recording engineer Geoff Emerick. Costello’s guitars are mostly in a supporting role. Horns, woodwinds and strings — as well as some of the liveliest backing vocals on an EC album since Afrodiziak lit up “Punch the Clock” — plus the deft hands of The Imposters and Argentine-born co-producer Sebastian Krys, turn “Look Now” into one of his most sonically gratifying records. Burt Bacharach composed some of the music and Costello also dusted off “Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter,” another tale of domestic gloom, written years ago with Carole King. But there are several others, including “Why Won’t Heaven Help Me” and “Stripping Paper,” which show how deeply those 1960s sounds, from pop to soul, influenced Costello and how expertly he applies them in his own superlative songwriting, which “Look Now” has plenty of. Costello said he recorded the lead vocals as he was recovering from a cancer scare and it made him feel invigorated instead of depressed. The power of his voice here, including that characteristic long-wave vibrato, confirms his mood. uitar virtuoso Dave Mason visits The State Theatre in State College Nov. 11 and he hopes his longtime fans enjoy newcomer Gretchen Rhodes as much as he does. Mason, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 for his early career work with the band Traffic, says having Rhodes on stage allows him to do what he prefers: Be a guitar player. “Essentially, I am a guitar player. I learned to sing because I had to. They went together. But I like backing someone up,” he said in a recent phone interview. “I found Gretchen on Maui at Mick Fleetwood’s bar and I just think she is just really good and a very nice addition to our band.” Mason spoke between tours. He spent the last few weeks on tour with fellow guitar great Steve Cropper on the “Rock and Soul Revue” tour has a few days off and then continues his “The Best of Dave Mason” tour. In between, he’s spending time at his Reno, Nevada, home in the

Malek explains how he connected to Mercury BY JOHN CARUCCI The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Rami Malek says he identified with the immigrant side of Freddie Mercury while tackling the role of the legendary Queen frontman. The first-generation American spoke about his starring role at the New York premiere of “Bohemian Rhapsody” on Tuesday. The “Mr. Robot” star connected with Mercury’s outsider passion for success. “I set out to be an actor some, I don’t know, over a decade ago. I think something was possibly burning inside the both of us. We had aspirations to live our dream. And I’m getting a chance to do that right now in this very moment,” Malek said. While many aspects defined Mercury, including being one of the best vocalists to front a rock band, his flamboyant presence and a penchant for taking chances, Malek felt like he had to dig deeper to find the beating heart of the Tanzania-born Mercury, who arrived in London at 18. “In some way he became the Freddie Mercury superstar that overcame every obstacle imaginable to be the guy that we all know can command the stage, and hold us in the palm of his hand like no other,” Malek said. “My family is from Egypt. I’m a first-generation American. And somehow I thought there were strings that I could tether together with him.”

Malek’s performance has more than impressed fans; it has impressed members of the band too. Current Queen lead singer Adam Lambert even feels the resemblance between the two is uncanny. “I love the heart that he brings to the role, the sensitivity. I love that the music of this band affects people in a way. And I know it firsthand, you know, being on tour with them for the past six years,” Lambert said. “You play one of these hit songs and just watching the audience light up and go through all their nostalgia and all of their memories that they’ve shared over this piece of music and they knew every word and they’re laughing and they’re crying and they’re dancing. That’s what you want, it really unites people. So I think the film is going to have that power as well,” Lambert said. And Malek has also captivated guitarist Brian May, who says the actor’s performance, “suspends disbelief.” “You believe he’s Freddie,” May said. Mike Myers, known for head-banging to “Bohemian Rhapsody” in his own film “Wayne’s World,” has an ironic cameo playing a record executive who tries to tell the band nobody will play the song on the radio. “I spent so hard fighting to get ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ into ‘Wayne’s World’ that I thought there was unbelievable irony, and such a crazy honor,” Myers said.

Films fall short of ethnic equality BY LYNN ELBER The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood is falling short of ethnic equality despite black-led films including “Black Panther,” actress and award-winning writer Lena Waithe said. There are “a million ‘La La Lands’ every year. How often do we get a ‘Moonlight’? How often do we get ‘Black Panther’?” she said.

“What to me will be true equality is when ‘Black Panther’ comes out and it’s just like ‘Captain America.’” Waithe, an actress and Emmy-winning screenwriter with the streaming comedy “Master of None” who was in the film “Ready Player One,” joined in conversation with comedian Hannah Gadsby at an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences lunch.

The event marked the launch of an academy initiative aimed at creating opportunities for female filmmakers to network and celebrate inclusiveness. It included presentation of a newly established Academy Gold Fellowship to young filmmaker Geeta Malik, writer-director of the award-winning online short “Aunty Gs” and films including “Beast” and “Troublemaker.”

For someone marking his 90th birthday, Mickey Mouse doesn’t look a day over ... well, let’s just say he doesn’t look 90. The enduringly popular cartoon character who secured entertainment icon Walt Disney’s career gets a big celebration with “Mickey’s 90th Spectacular,” a new ABC special airing Sunday, Nov. 4. Disney Company chairman and CEO Robert Iger honors one of show business’ most famous animated figures, as does a parade of largely musical performers. Kristen Bell, Josh Groban, Josh Gad, Meghan Trainor, Zac Brown Band, Kelsea Ballerini, Tony Award winner Leslie Odom Jr. (“Hamilton”), Sarah Hyland (“Modern Family”), two-time Emmy winner Tony Hale (“Veep”), Sofia Carson

(“Descendants”), Luis Fonsi, Tori Kelly, Miles Brown (“blackish”), Wendi McLendon-Covey (“The Goldbergs”), spouses Anna Camp and Skylar Astin (“Pitch Perfect”), and two of the original “Mickey Mouse Club” Mouseketeers — Sharon Baird and Bobby Burgess — are in the extravaganza overseen by veteran producer-director Don Mischer. One of the principal dancers on “The Lawrence Welk Show” after his mid-to-late-1950s “Mickey Mouse Club” days, Burgess also participated in a 1988 tour marking the mouse’s 60th birthday. “I went around the United States to 45 cities, and to Australia and New Zealand,” the pleasant performer says. “That was very special for me.

“And when we did ‘The Mickey Mouse Club,’ we did a tour in 1959 and 1960. Mickey was with us the whole time, and he would accompany us on any personal appearances ... and he always dances right along with us. We’ve always had a good relationship with Mickey!” Baird was brought into the “Mickey’s 90th Spectacular” by Burgess after he was asked about female Mouseketeers who could partner with him at the event. He notes, “Our theme song said, ‘Through the years, we’ll all be friends, wherever we may be’ — and we are. We Mouseketeers stick together, but Sharon was a special friend of mine. We jitterbugged together on ‘The Mickey Mouse Club,’ and through every reunion, they’ve always asked us to dance together.”

Burgess has shared notes with a Southern California neighbor who was a much later Mouseketeer: Justin Timberlake, who spent two seasons (1993-94) on an “All-New Mickey Mouse Club” revival with such castmates as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell and Ryan Gosling. Now the owner of a dance studio that employs his four children, Burgess might have had a different career path. “I was supposed to be going to New York with (a stage production of) ‘Peter Pan,’ and I lost my voice, so I lost my job,” he recalls. “Instead, I got ‘The Mickey Mouse Club,’ which was much better for me because it went to millions instead of just the theater crowd. Everything worked out perfect.
