NEW YORK — The two biggest breakthrough acts in music this year, Billie Eilish and Lizzo, will perform at the 2019 American Music Awards

later this month. Dick clark productions announced Wednesday that other performers at the Nov. 24 event include Camila Cabello, nominated for collaboration of the year for “Senorita” with Shawn Mendes, and Dua Lipa, whose debut album is the most streamed album by a female artist in Spotify history. The show will air live on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Eilish is competing for six AMAs, including favorite female pop/rock artist and favorite pop/rock album. Her debut — “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” — is one of the top-selling albums of the year. It launched multiple Top 40 hits including “Bad Guy,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lizzo, nominated for three AMAs, released her debut in 2013 but she achieved major

success this year. Her two-yearold song “Truth Hurts” topped the Hot 100 chart for seven weeks and her three-year-old song “Good As Hell” just reached the Top 10 on the pop charts and is No. 1 on the R&B charts. Lizzo released her major-label debut album, “Cuz I Love You,” earlier this year. Previously announced AMA performers include Selena Gomez, whose new song “Lose You to Love Me” hit No. 1 on

the Hot 100 chart this week, and Taylor Swift, who is nominated for five honors and will receive the artist of the decade award at the show. Throughout her career, Swift has won 23 AMAs and she could break Michael Jackson’s record for most wins (the King of Pop won 24 trophies). Swift will compete for the top prize — artist of the year — along with Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Drake and Halsey.

‘Ode to Joy’ dBpm

From the opening beats of the first song on Wilco’s latest album “Ode to Joy,” it’s clear this is a record driven by drummer Glenn Kotche. Setting a one-two march-like beat on “Bright Leaves,” Kotche drives the song and ultimately the record forward as lead singer Jeff Tweedy’s vocals and lyrics explore familiar themes of loss, pain, exhaustion and yes, even joy. It’s a more understated minimalistic musical approach for Wilco on its 11th

record. Acoustic instruments and subtly sung vocals (and that ever-present drum beat) win out over howling guitars and anthem rock choruses. Every Wilco record has a personality of its own. This one almost feels like a Tweedy-Kotche duo effort, with the rest of the band making guest appearances as warranted. But it’s two songs that more fully showcase the entire band that are standouts on “Ode to Joy.” On “Love is Everywhere (Beware),” Tweedy strikes a cautionary pose about being too accepting of the love that surrounds us, while also welcoming it. And on “Everyone Hides,” Kotche drives an infectious beat and memorable melody. The music video for that song — which features the band on a Beatlesesque hide and seek game in the streets of Chicago — is worth seeking out. Think of it as a love letter to the city the band calls home, with a sly wink and a nod to the Wilco’s fans and its

‘Desert Dove’ Yep Roc

The new album by Michaela Anne is a spirited collection by a singer with big-time talent, though it suffers a little from too much radio-play calculation. At its best, “Desert Dove” has a vitality that outshines much of what dominates the airwaves these days. Anne has a lovely voice, and the first-rate ensemble playing behind her, untethered by traditional country conventions, ranges comfortably between Eagles-style rock and the gentle, acoustic-electric equilibrium that croon-rocker Chris Isaak perfected back in the ‘90s. The Isaak style is most obvious on the title cut, a mystical piece of portraiture that is one of the album’s best songs. She goes more traditional on

“Two Fools,” a regretful ballad that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Patsy Cline record. The album stumbles on an overly self-conscious cut called “If I Wanted Your Opinion.” It’s a feminist anthem with cloying lyrics like “I’m not a poster on the wall, I’m not a porcelain doll, I think it’s funny how you think you run the show.” It feels calculated for radio play, or to appeal to a target audience — but of course that’s just an opinion. The song diminishes the album but doesn’t ruin it. There’s too much fresh material here for that. On another fine cut, “One Heart,” Anne defends going all-in for love despite the risks, singing, “I’d rather blow the whole thing up than never light a match.” That makes the point without being quite so obvious. NEW YORK — The Neptunes, the creative, innovative production-songwriting duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo who shaped pop and urban radio from the ’90s well into the 2000s thanks to crafting hits for Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Usher and Beyonce, are nominated for the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame. Joining the Neptunes as nominees for the 2020 class are other visionaries who have carved out their own space in the music universe: the rap icons Outkast and rock pioneers R.E.M., who announced they had called it quits in 2011. The Songwriters Hall gave The Associated Press the list of nominees Tuesday, a day ahead of its official announcement. Twenty-four acts are in contention for the 2020 class. Performing nominees include Patti Smith, Journey, Vince Gill, Gloria Estefan, the Isley Brothers, former Eurythmics members Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, Mike Love, Bread’s David Gates and Steve Miller. Mariah Carey, who cowrote 17 of her 18 No. 1 hits and

earned her first Songwriters Hall nomination last year, is up for the prize again. Non-performing solo nominees are William “Mickey” Stevenson, Rick Nowels, Sonny Curtis, Jerry Fuller, Tony Macaulay, Bob McDill and Roger Nichols. Non-performing songwriting duos nominated include the late Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, L. Russell Brown and the late Irwin Levine, and Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan. Songwriters are eligible for induction after writing hit songs for at least 20 years. Six songwriters, or songwriting groups, will be officially inducted at the Hall’s 51st annual Induction & Awards Gala in New York on June 11, 2020. Eligible members can vote for three non-performing songwriters and three performing songwriters until December 16. The Neptunes, based in Virginia, became highly sought producers and songwriters as everyone, from pop to rap to R&B stars, requested their services. Williams and Hugo worked on Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits such as Nelly’s “Hot In Herre,”

Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl,” and Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” The duo helped Britney Spears break out of her good-girl image in 2001 with the racy “I’m A Slave 4 U,” one of the singer’s traditional songs; the hitmakers produced more than half of Timberlake’s pivotal 2002 solo debut “Justified,” including the hits “Like I Love You” and “Senorita”; they helped Beyonce enter the world as a solo singer in 2002 on her debut solo song, the funky “Work It Out”; and they assisted Jay-Z as he scored his first No. 1 hit as a lead artist on Billboard’s Hot R&B/HipHop songs chart in 2000 with the anthem “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me).” Williams and Hugo met in the seventh grade and appear together in the alternative hiphop trio N.E.R.D. along with Shay Haley. In recent years Williams, a 13-time Grammy winner, has produced without Hugo (two Grammys), churning out hits for other artists such as Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Migos, Beyonce and Jay-Z. Williams also found major success with his own music, even earning an

Oscar nomination for the smash “Happy,” one of the top songs of the decade. If inducted, Outkast and Williams — who also raps and sings — could join the elite group of hip-hop players in the Songwriters Hall: Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri and Missy Elliott joined the organization in 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively. Outkast emerged from the Atlanta rap scene in the mid-90s, marking both commercial and critical success with the albums “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzi k,” “ATLiens,” “Aquemini” and “Stankonia,” as the Southern hip-hop movement thrived. Andre 3000 and Big Boi’s fifth release, 2003’s double album “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,” propelled them to pop star icon status, thanks to the inescapable hit “Hey Ya!” The album, which blended sounds of jazz and rock with hip-hop, became the second rap-based album to win the Grammy for album of the year, following Lauryn Hill’s win for “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” at the 1999 show. A rap album hasn’t won the top Grammy prize since Outkast’s win, though hip-

hop heavyweights like Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Kanye West, Drake and Lil Wayne have competed for the honor. R.E.M. shook up the music world with its experimental, edgy sound and then earned multiplatinum success and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group got its start in Athens, Georgia, coming out of the region’s flourishing indierock scene. The band was credited for helping launch college radio with songs such as “Radio Free Europe.” And later the mainstream caught on, and R.E.M. became chart-topping rockers, selling millions of albums with hits like “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts.” Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills announced in 2011 that the band was done. R.E.M.’s original lineup included Bill Berry, who left the group in 1997, two years after he suffered symptoms of an aneurysm onstage, though he guest-performed with the band throughout the 2000s. All four members are nominated for the Songwriters Hall.

he acclaimed and award-winning rock musical “Rent,” restaged by Evan Ensign for the 20th anniversary tour, comes to Eisenhower Auditorium Nov. 19 and brings Penn State alumna Maggie Swahl back to University Park. “Rent,” created by the late Jonathan Larson, tells the story of impoverished young artists who struggle to survive in Lower Manhattan’s East Village under the spectre of HIV/AIDS. After it’s 1996 premiere, it set box office records, gained critical acclaim and won several awards including the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer for Drama — one of only five musicals so awarded. The tour is produced by Work Light Productions. Among her duties, she is responsible for working with box offices on the tour and arranging premium seating locations for the family and friends of those involved in the production. On a recent break from the tour, Swahl visited Karn and other employees where she started out. “We are all women and we were all there together celebrating my success. There is something so wonderful about women supporting women.” Such comaraderie is what makes “Rent” still relevant 22-years after its debut, she said, especially for those in their early 20s. “Everyone is struggling between responsibilities versus how to enjoy life. It talks to everyone. I think at some point, you see yourself in at least one of the characters. It’s a lifelong struggle.”

In ‘Motherless Brooklyn,’ ‘Chinatown’ goes East BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

Jonathan Lethem’s novel about a private eye with Tourette’s syndrome, “Motherless Brooklyn,” starts with a brilliant burst of uncontrolled profanity and an explanation of its protagonist’s condition. “Words rush out of the cornucopia of my brain to course over the surface of the world, tickling reality like fingers on piano keys. Caressing, nudging. They’re an invisible army on a peacekeeping mission, a peaceable horde. They mean no harm.” Lethem lets loose a riot of language

across the subsequent pages, remaking a classic detective story with an uncontrollable flow of words. In his intelligent, engrossing and derivative adaptation of “Motherless Brooklyn,” Edward Norton has something tidier in mind. Norton, who wrote, directed, produced and stars in the film, has shifted the story from the ‘90s to the ‘50s, taking a then-contemporary twist on an old genre and sending it back to its late-noir heyday, along with all the period-appropriate trench coats, automobiles and venetian blinds. Norton first sought out the book more than 20 years ago — this is a longtime “passion project” finally come to fruition — and it’s clear that he wanted to enlarge the story’s ambitions. He’s after a “Chinatown” for New York. Lionel Essrog (Norton) is private dick whose mentor Frank Minna (Bruce Willis, whose infrequent appearance in movies of late has only heightened his powerful presence), adopted Lionel and raised him in his private investigator business. When Minna is killed in the film’s opening scenes, Essrog throws himself into discovering the murderers, whipping up his fellow detectives — Tony (Bobby Cannavale), Gilbert (Ethan Suplee) and Danny (Dallas Roberts) — to

join in the search. Essrog, at times donning the guise of a reporter, follows a trail of clues that leads him across the metropolis and into a broad city hall conspiracy that rises to the penthouse-heights of New York power. Along the way are trips through a not-yet-razed Penn Station, a handsome Washington Square Park and a pivotal Harlem jazz club (where Michael K. Williams plays a trumpet player). He befriends a black attorney, Laura Ross (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who helps him realize the full scope of the corruption revolving around “slum clearance” policies of redevelopment, and how Minna figures into it. Norton is leading Essrog into foundational midcentury New York history. Just as Jake Gittes unwittingly uncovered the water supply sins on which Los Angeles was built in “Chinatown,” “Motherless Brooklyn” winds its way through the neighborhood-destroying freeway laying of Robert Moses’ New York. “Motherless Brooklyn” is more indebted, ultimately,

to Robert Caro’s “The Power Broker” than Lethem’s novel. The Robert Moses doppelganger here is named Moses Randolph and played with perfection by Alec Baldwin, who’s making something of a habit of playing New York’s real-estate villains. In one fine moment with a large map of New York behind him, he insists that he’s not above the law, “I’m ahead of it.” To some, this well-known history (there is also a Jane Jacobs-like figure protesting Randolph’s brute-force policies) is too familiar to be particularly intriguing. It’s a little like a gumshoe wandering into a text book. But not everyone is deeply versed in Moses’ overwhelming imprint on New York City. And what makes “Motherless Brooklyn” respectable and even novel is this grafting of social history onto a genre tale. It’s not exactly commonplace in today’s movies to be taken down a rabbit hole about urban development. It’s a laudable impulse, and Norton’s film provides a welcome reminder of what we’ve

been missing. There’s certainly more to be gained from that side of “Motherless Brooklyn” than the showcase of Norton’s performance. The actor, who famously played a stuttering schizophrenic in “Primal Fear,” largely pulls it off with a full diet of tics, mannerisms, jerks and blurts. “It makes me say funny things, but I’m not trying to be funny,” Essrog, nicknamed “Freakshow,” tells someone. But the performance never feels like much more than an acting challenge. Norton, who last directed the 2000 romantic comedy “Keeping the Faith,” has made a resolutely sturdy movie, filled with excellent actors (Willem Dafoe is also in the mix) and composed — Dick Pope (”Mr. Turner”) supplies the slick and shadowy cinematography — with a vivid feel for New York. “Motherless Brooklyn” is done well enough that you wish it had struck out on its own path, rather than crib from Robert Towne and Roman Polanski. It’s hard to forget it, but that’s “Chinatown.”

Two weeks after Apple TV+ joined the streaming fray, there comes another 800-pound gorilla — or in this case, mouse — into the room with the debut of Disney+. Signing on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the new service — which costs subscribers $6.99/ month or $69.99/year — will at launch offer up about a dozen original series and movies plus more than 30 other original productions to be rolled out over the next two years. That’s in addition to the more than 7,500 episodes of TV series such as “The Simpsons,” “Amazing Planet,” “Wicked Tuna” and “That’s So Raven” and the 500 or so movie titles including “Iron Man,” “Toy Story,” “High School Musical” and the first seven “Star Wars” movies that become available this week. Speaking of “High School Musical,” that 2006 feature film is the inspiration for

one of the original entries available Tuesday. “High School Musical: The Musical — The Series” is a 10-episode scripted series that follows a group of students as they prepare for opening night of their first-ever production of — well, see the title. Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo, Kate Reinders and Sofia Wylie head the cast. In that same vein on launch day is the unscripted series “Encore!” from executive producer Kristen Bell, which reunites former castmates from a high school musical and tasks them with re-creating their original performances, with all the emotions, rivalries and faded friendships that might entail. Also starting up Tuesday is “The World According to Jeff Goldblum,” in which the Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actor does a deep dive into such commonplace items as sneakers and ice cream and pulls up some

surprising facts, revelations and histories. If it is holiday fare you seek, the comedy movie “Noelle” stars Anna Kendrick as the title character, Kris Kringle’s daughter, who must take over the family business when her brother (played by Bill Hader) goes missing. Other originals available on opening day include “The Imagineering Story,” a documentary series chronicling the 65-year history of Walt Disney Imagineering; “Marvel’s Hero Project,” spotlighting the difference young heroes are making in their communities; “The Mandalorian,” an action series from the “Star Wars” universe starring Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Gina Carano and Giancarlo Esposito; the animated short “Forky Asks a Question,” in which the character from “Toy Story 4” explores questions about how the world works; and the movie “Lady and the

Tramp,” a retelling of the 1955 animated classic. Later in 2019 and into 2020 and 2021, subscribers can look forward to more original fare such as “Lizzie McGuire,” in which Hilary Duff reprises her role from the 2001-04 Disney Channel kids show; “WandaVision,” starring Elizabeth Olsen in a new Marvel Studios offering from the “Avengers” franchise; “Monsters at Work,” a “Monsters, Inc.”-inspired animated series with voice work from Ben Feldman, Billy Crystal and John Goodman; “(Re)Connect,” an unscripted offering in which troubled families are forced to shut out outside distractions and devices and address their issues; and “Be Our Chef,” a competition show hosted by Angela Kinsey (“The Office”) in which contestants are tasked with preparing Disney-inspired dishes.
