‘Frozen 2’ heats up box office BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

NEW YORK— Six years after “Frozen” kicked up a pop-culture blizzard, the sequel to Elsa, Anna and Olaf’s adventures snowed-in the box office with an estimated $127 million debut domestically and $350.2 million worldwide, according to studio estimates Sunday. The opening for the Walt Disney Co.’s “Frozen 2” buried several records. It’s the highest-grossing debut ever for any animated film globally. It marks a new high in the U.S. and Canada for an animated movie released outside of the summer season. And it’s the largest opening for any Walt Disney Animation Studios release. Disney opted for the week ahead of Thanksgiving to open “Frozen 2,” meaning it will get a significant second week bump from kids out of school. The first “Frozen” opened over Thanksgiving, earning $93 million in five days and $67 million for the three-day weekend. The original, though, quickly grew into a sensation, remaining in the top 10 at the box office for 17 weeks and ultimately grossing $1.27 billion. Propelled in part by

the hit song “Let it Go,” “Frozen” begat a flurry of merchandizing, untold numbers of Elsa dresses and a Broadway musical. It won two Academy Awards, for best animated feature and original song. Matching that total gross won’t be easy sledding, but “Frozen 2” has a head start. Cathleen Taff, distribution chief for Disney, granted there’s a “high bar” set by “Frozen,” but she’s confident of the film’s enormous appeal. “We can’t open to a number this big without everybody coming out to see it,” said Taff. “We’re looking forward to a good run through the holidays given kids are going to start getting out of school this next week.” Reviews and audience reaction have been good for “Frozen 2,” but not as strong as they were for the original. “Frozen 2” helped thaw a frigid November box office. The last three weeks have seen a string of films rooted in decades-old intellectual property fizzle, including Warner Bros.’ “Doctor Sleep,” Paramount Pictures’ “Terminator: Dark Fate” and Sony Pictures’ “Charlie’s Angels.”

At the end of a year that saw musicians like Niall Horan and Ed Sheeran gingerly dip their toes into other languages, Coldplay have responded: Hold my European beer. Their new album, “Everyday Life,” is so utterly embracing of the world that is has words spoken or sung in Arabic, Spanish, Zulu and Igbo, and even a French verse sung by lead singer Chris Martin. It’s a fluid and experimental 53minute double album, divided into two halves, Sunrise and Sunset. If on 2015’s “A Head Full of Dreams,” the band sampled the likes of Barack Obama and a Rumi poem, now they’re doubling down. “Everyday Life” is bursting with idiosyncratic references, ranging from the film “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” to a Bob Dylan lyric, a novel by Khaled Hosseini, audio of a bullying traffic

GO+TV MIRROR stop by a cop in Philadelphia, an elegy to Africa, samples from Nigerian composer Harcourt Whyte and jazz legend Alice Coltrane, the South African activist song “Jikelele” and an exuberant tune about Syrian refugees (”Orphans,” which features a credit for Martin’s teenage son, Moses). “Orphans” is really the only traditional-sounding Coldplay song. The others are often subdued, instrumental or undercooked. “I haven’t finished this one yet” say the liner notes on the stripped-down and fragmentary “WOTW/POTP.” It’s an astonishing, unsafe step from a band who could have just kept giving us “Something Like This.” There are ambient sounds and snippets from films, including the documentaries “Everything Is Incredible” and “Fela Kuti: Music is the Weapon.” The band even seems to reference themselves (”Boom bo-boom boom” from “X Marks the Spot.”) Sometimes it feels less than an album and more like a multimedia project. Fans will find that, sonically, the band has stepped off the dance floor. The new music is less bombastic and more intimate. “Old Friends” is a mournful ode to loss, while “Daddy” is sung from the heartbreaking perspective of an abandoned child. “Daddy are you OK?/Look dad we got the same hair.” There’s even spots of gospel and funk-jazz.

The band is also playing with time, with lyrics and credits seemingly created on an old typewriter and offering old timey band portraits that recall those famous shots of The Band. There are also political songs — the menacing “Trouble in Town” and the sarcastic “Guns” — but most of the album is about faith — all faiths, from East Asian Buddhism to Pakistani Sufism. It begins with a prayer in “Church” — “Oh, Father, God Almighty, why have you forsaken me?” — and ends 15 songs later with a soft thanksgiving Hallelujah, thanks to the gentle title track’s earnest plea for peace (sounding not unlike something from “Parachutes”) “How in the world am I going to see/You as my brother not my enemy,” Martin sings. “Got to keep dancing when the lights go out.” In response to an ailing world, Coldplay are opening their arms wide and refusing to stop believing. — By Mark Kennedy, The Associated Press

It almost seems like the high-octave vocalist and guitar maniac is keeping ‘80s heavy metal alive all on his own, given his frenetic output and the consistent quality of each release. His 10th solo album begins with a heavy dose of transplanted Stryper DNA on “Better Part of Me,” which is built around the intro riff from 1986’s “More Than A Man.” It’s remarkable how well Sweet’s voice has held up over nearly four decades, with scant rest between discs and tours. A time-honored tradition of ‘80s metal is the power ballad, and no one does them better than Sweet. This time it’s “Let It Be Love,” a worthy successor to the MTV smash “Honestly” and 1990’s “Lady.” Sweet also brings in a truckload of metal friends, including cameos from members of Whitesnake, L.A. Guns, Fozzy and Arch Enemy. “Son of Man,” a duet with Todd La Torre of Queensryche, is everything a heavy metal song should be: fast-paced, drumheavy and with unfathomably shredding guitar by Andy James. It sounds like what might be expected if Sweet sang with Motorhead while Yngwie Malmsteen played guitar. NEW YORK — Genre-mashing, bold and chart-topping new artists have caught the attention of the Recording Academy, as Lizzo, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X lead in nominations at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Lizzo is in first place, scoring eight bids for her fun, positive rap-pop style that has made her not only the year’s top new act, but arguably the year’s most successful musician. She and Eilish — who created her best-selling debut album with her brother Finneas at their home studio — each earned nominations in the top four categories: album, song and record of the year, along with best new artist. Lil Nas X, who burst onto music charts with the country-trap anthem “Old Town Road,” earned nominations for album, record and song of the year. Yola, the British country-soul singer

who scored four nominations, said she feels honored to be nominated for best new artist alongside Lizzo, Lil Nas X and Eilish. “You just couldn’t ignore the contribution that Lizzo’s brought, or Lil Nas, and the conversation he and I have been opening up about country music,” said Yola. “And obviously Billie, she’s killing it. “I find it really hard to believe that I was awake — that it was a real thing. It’s such a hard category to get into,” she added. H.E.R., who scored five nominations at last year’s Grammys, including a bid for best new artist, returns this year with five more nominations. She won two awards in the R&B categories earlier this year and said she’s not sure what advice to offer the new acts who are dominating in Grammy nominations. “I don’t even know if I can give

advice because everything felt so surreal to me. I was just thankful, and I know the nominations itself is just a stamp on all the hard work,” she said. “It solidifies that, like, ‘Wow, I really made it to even be named among these artists. It’s just a good feeling.” Yola, who spoke from Germany where she was performing recently, said she couldn’t stop crying after getting the good news. Her other nominations include best American Roots performance and best American Roots song for “Faraway Look,” as well as best Americana album for “Walk Through Fire,” which was produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. “I’m an album-maker more than a person that focuses on singles, so that’s just really meaningful,” she said. he first weekend in December kicks off with a double helping of the Altoona Symphony Orchestra in full Christmas mode. On Dec. 7, the symphony presents “Home for the Holidays” and is joined by the Blair Concert Chorale. The symphony is among the guests to appear in a matinee concert Dec. 8 to benefit a local organization that funds research into childhood cancer and supports local children.. Maestra Teresa Cheung said, “We are delighted that the Blair Concert Chorale will be joining us for our Christmas season kickoff concert. We have not totally finalized on the titles that they will be performing on their own at our concert, but one of our (numbers) will be the whimsical work called ‘The Musicological Journey of the Twelve Days of Christmas’ by Craig Courtney. It is based on the Christmas carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas,’ and is arranged whimsically in all sorts of musical styles throughout the history of music.” The Blair Concert Chorale, according to its website, formed in 1987 by combining the Keystone Chorale and the Altoona Choral Society, which in turn traces its roots back to 1933. In 1995 a tuition-based children’s choir was added to expose, educate, and develop youth between the ages of 7 and 17 to classical music.The adult chorale today is made up of over 40 singers (all volunteers) from Blair, Bedford, and Cambria counties. The children’s choir consists of up to 30 young people from the greater Altoona area. The chorale, according to Cheung,

Additional musicians include flutist Barbara Fagan, Kiera’s CCD teacher and played with Kiera at her church; trumpeters David Maller, who plays at Kiera’s church and Paul Cassarly, winner of a Brian Morden Foundation scholarship in 2011. Also appearing will be Victory Brinker, a 7-year-old-opera singer, who sings with a four octave range in six languages. A Latrobe, Pa., native, she has spent the past year and a half performing across the country most notably at Carnegie Hall, the Apollo, NBA games and for the Pittsburgh Pirates 2019 Home Opener. She is a frequent featured performer with the Pittsburgh opera group Aria412, and will be singing throughout the month of December for WQED and Pittsburgh Public Theatre’s holiday show Lights and Legends. LOS ANGELES — When Idina Menzel first started performing “Let It Go” live in concerts, she thought the lyrics and soaring vocals would empower all those young girls in the audience dressed up as Elsa. Instead, Menzel said she often walked away from those performances feeling just as inspired. “I feel an extreme sense of pride about it,” said Menzel, the Tony Award-winning performer who voices Elsa. “But you see a little girl in a blue dress in the second row,” she continued. “That’s when you realize the song and movie represents them. It’s giving them permission to take ownership of who they are, and everything that makes them unique and different. But it’s a reciprocity. It’s coming back to me exponentially because I need to hear it too.” Menzel believes “Frozen 2,” has the capacity to empower young girls, boys and others of all ages in the same way. The new film comes six years after the original broke box office records for an animated film, amassing $1.2 billion in worldwide ticket sales. It was bolstered by “Let It Go,” which won a Grammy and two Oscars. Jennifer Lee, co-director and writer of both films, said she didn’t anticipate the success of “Frozen.” Lee said a conversation with a stranger demonstrated the film’s impact. “I met a woman wearing a handmade ‘Let It Go,’ necklace, but she didn’t have any idea who I was,” Lee said. “She was talking, and I observed. She embraced the movie for herself. She felt the music spoke to her. It seemed to empower her. That’s our goal.”

Menzel is unsure if the sequel can generate the same astronomical numbers as the original. But she is hopeful the story and music can resonate with viewers and further the themes of the original, including showing that female characters don’t necessarily need their male counterpart to rescue them from distress. In “Frozen 2,” Elsa finally embraces her powers, but she finds herself haunted by an unsettling voice from afar that no one else can hear. She ends up going on a dangerous journey to seek answers with her sister Anna, played by Kristen Bell. Also joining them are Anna’s boyfriend Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), his reindeer friend Sven and the bubbly snowman Olaf, voiced by Josh Gad. Co-director Chris Buck said the sequel has moments of being “fun and humorous,” but the story also delves deep into Elsa and Anna’s emotions. He said the main characters are trying to find their meaning in life. The film expands on challenges facing Elsa’s kingdom of Arendelle, with Sterling K. Brown joining the cast as a military officer and Evan Rachel Wood voicing the sisters’ mother. “The first film is more like Act 1 of a musical where you’re setting up the characters’ wants and who they are,” Buck said “In this one, we can do Act 2. Usually, those songs go deeper and they’re more emotional. You find out more.” Several deadlines were “blown past” while creating the story line that had at least 50 versions of rewrites, the directors said. Bell applauded the creative team for taking their time.

Getting into a holiday

‘Moodys’: Fox premieres seasonal sitcom Elizabeth Perkins and Denis Leary star in the limited-run Fox comedy series “The Moodys,” premiering Wednesday.

Denis Leary wasn’t looking for another series nor a Christmas comedy, but both found him in one package. The “Rescue Me” and “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” veteran stars in “The Moodys,” a limited-run Fox sitcom about a dysfunctional Chicago family reunited for the holidays, for better or worse. The show airs two of its six episodes on each of three nights starting Wednesday, Dec. 4, then continuing the following Monday and Tuesday. Elizabeth Perkins (“Weeds”) plays Leary’s wife, with Jay Baruchel (“Man Seeking Woman”), Chelsea Frei (“Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter”) and Francois Arnaud

(“The Borgias”) as the couple’s grown children. “It’s probably the craziest shooting schedule I’ve ever been involved with,” the dryly witty Leary muses, “with the exception of a couple of reshoots for movies. We go on the air a month after we wrapped, and I’ve never done anything that crazy before.” Still, Leary adds that he has confidence in the outcome largely because of Bob Fisher, one of its writers, directors and executive producers: “He and I adapted the British show ‘Sirens’ together for USA Network, and we had a great time. I say ‘No’ to everything, basically, but he’s one of the people on my short list. I’m always looking to work with

somebody I know or somebody I’m really interested in working with. Nobody can guarantee that anything is going to be good or even middling. You can only do the work, so I want to have a good time doing it.” Leary played a Christmas Eve criminal in the 1994 movie “The Ref.” He admits “it’s hard to convince me” to attempt edgy holiday humor again, “but the tone of this felt a lot like that. That’s how Bob sold it to me, actually. He said, ‘This is like ”The Ref“ as a television show,’ and that was a good hook.” Also a recurring player on TNT’s “Animal Kingdom,” Leary often writes his own material, but he says that wasn’t a concern

for him in the case of “The Moodys.” He notes, “There was certainly a lot of playing around and improvising on the set, but this guy was written as someone with a big heart but a hard external shell. It’s clear this family loves each other, but man, they have a lot of stuff to get through.” While “The Moodys” is only a one-shot project for now, Leary is ready should Fox decide to order more of it. “We all signed up with that idea in mind,” he confirms. “If the thing works, the game plan is to bring the Moodys back with a different family event ... a wedding, an anniversary, a funeral. All of their resentments and grudges could go on.”
