‘Frozen 2’ leads box office again; ‘Playmobil’ flops BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

NEW YORK — “Frozen 2” blanketed multiplexes for the third straight weekend, continuing its reign at No. 1 with $34.7 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Walt Disney Co. animated sequel has already grossed $919.7 million worldwide. It will soon become the sixth Disney release this year to cross $1 billion, a record sure to grow to seven once “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” hits theaters later this month. Early next week, Disney will cross $10 billion at the global box office this year. But the weekend overall at the box office was yet another disappointing one for the movie industry. A handful of under-performing releases and a relatively thin wide-release schedule hasn’t helped the 5.6% slide in domestic ticket sales from last year, according to data firm Comscore. This weekend produced an outright flop in “Playmobil: The Movie,” the week’s

only new wide release. The STX Films release was never expected to do well, but it bombed so thoroughly that it will rank among the worst-performing wide-releases ever. It grossed $668,000 in 2,337 venues, giving it a per-theater average of just $286. A handful of companies combined to produce the $75 million French film, including Wild Bunch and Pathe. The top five films were almost unchanged from last weekend. Rian Johnson’s acclaimed, star-studded whodunit “Knives Out” remained in second place with $14.2 million, declining a modest 47% in its second week of release. With $63.5 million cumulatively and $124.1 million worldwide, the Lionsgate release has been one of the season’s bright spots. So has James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” which stayed in third place with $6.5 million over its fourth weekend. The racing drama, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, has sped to a global take of $168 million for Disney, which

Sundance sets lineup with Swift, ‘Downhill’ BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — A documentary on Taylor Swift will kick off the next Sundance Film Festival, where new films including the Will Ferrell-Julia Louis Dreyfus remake of the Swedish film “Force Majeure” and Benh Zeitlin’s longawaited follow-up to “Beasts of the Southern Wild” are set to premiere. Programmers for the preeminent showcase for independent cinema, founded by Robert Redford and set annually in the mountains of Park City, Utah, announced the lion share of the lineup for its 2020 edition last week. The lineup of 118 feature-length films, culled from a record 15,100 submissions, come from 27 countries, includes 44 first-time filmmakers and is among the most diverse in the festival’s 37-year history. In the four competition categories, 46% of the directors are women, 38% are people of color and 12% are LGBTQ. The coming Sundance, set for Jan. 23Feb. 2, follows a 2019 festival that saw bigpocketed streaming services set off an avalanche of high-priced acquisitions, some of which notably fizzled at the box office. Amazon paid large sums for “Late Night” and “The Report” but neither made much of a dent in theaters; Amazon is now shrinking its exclusive theatrical window for some releases. Warner Bros.’ paid $15 million for the Bruce Springsteen-infused coming-of-age tale “Blinded by the Light,” but it failed to catch on. The biggest hit to emerge from last year’s crop was Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” which has grossed $17.7 million for A24. It’s been one of the bright spots in a trying marketplace this year for indie film. Still, Sundance, where movies like “Get Out,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “The Big Sick” first debuted, remains the premier factory for breakout hits. Lately, that’s increasingly meant documentaries, too, including “RBG,” “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” and, from this year’s Sundance, “Apollo 11.” Sure to add extra frenzy this year is Lana Wilson’s “Taylor Swift: Miss

On Monday, it picked up a high-profile documentary headed to Park City: Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick’s untitled film about a former music executive grappling with the decision to go public with a story of sexual assault by a notable figure in the music industry. Zeitlin will unveil “Wendy,” a “Peter Pan”-inspired adventure shot in the West Indies. It’s his first movie since his Oscarnominated debut, “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” a sensation at 2012’s Sundance. Also on tap for are Rees’ Joan Didion adaptation “The Last Thing He Wanted,”

‘WHO’ Interscope

While frequently joining forces for tours and other projects, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey have released just two studio albums as The Who since 1982, with 2006’s “Endless Wire” their last such work until now. “WHO” sees the pair backed by some of their frequent collaborators since the deaths of drummer Keith Moon in 1979 and bassist John Entwistle in 2002, such as drummer Zak Starkey and bassist Pino Palladino. Others include drummers Joey Waronker and Carla Azar, bassist Gus Seyffert and keyboard player Benmont Tench. Still, all the splendid backing notwithstanding — and not forgetting co-producer and multi-instrumentalist D. Sardy, either — it’s the high standards of The Who’s last remaining trademarks, Townshend’s songwriting and guitar playing and Daltrey’s superlative singing, that make the album such a joy. Townshend has written a strong batch of songs full of yearning and confronting the passage of time, many carrying shades and echoes of his past work; he rips

power chords and performs slinky riffs; and his vocals, especially in support of Daltrey’s leads, are still a highlight. Daltrey, for his part, with health concerns behind him, sings with power, sensitivity, range and conviction, just as he has done for decades. While it doesn’t have the same of air of finality as Leonard Cohen’s “You Want It Darker,” released just weeks before his death in 2016, based on their recording habits of the past decades, “WHO” may well be their last studio album. The catchy, propulsive opener “All This Music Must

Fade” seems like a message about Townshend and Daltrey’s difficult relationship, even though that seems to have mellowed: “I don’t care/I know you’re gonna hate this song. And that’s it/We never really got along.” It may also be a missive to their fans and closes with what will become Townshend’s most famous last words since his “I saw ya!” at the end of “Happy Jack.” “Ball and Chain,” “Street Song” and “Beads on One String” are topical but many other of the 11 tracks (plus three on the deluxe edition) are simultaneously defiant, vulnerable and contemplative, with aging repeatedly rearing its head. On the rousing “Rocking in Rage,” like a coda to “Quadrophenia,” the talk is still about their generation: “I thought I’d be calmer/Not rocking in rage,” even if “I’m too old to fight.” It’s a shiver-inducing Daltrey performance. Townshend sings lead on “I’ll Be Back,” a nostalgic tune with strings and harmonica, that seems lifted from his “All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes” 1982 solo album. On “I Don’t Wanna Get Wise,” Daltrey seems to have changed some of the lyric sheet’s “I” pronouns into “he,” “we” and “us,” as if making space for himself in the rocking mini-biography of a song — “He was drunk/I was blind/Though we tried to be kind” — and belting out a “We got wise” at the end. Thankfully, it’s much too late for Daltrey and Townshend to die before they get old, so with “WHO” they show that even in rock ‘n’ roll, it’s possible to age both with grace and vigor and without abandoning purpose. NEW YORK — John Hiatt wrote his first song at age 11, and knew right away that’s what he wanted to do. It’s not his job; it’s who he is. He’s 67 now. With all that time put in, it’s amusing that the two albums that are arguably the cornerstones of his career — 1987’s “Bring the Family” and 2000’s “Crossing Muddy Waters” — were both recorded in only four days. “Bring the Family,” his eighth album, was made in Los Angeles’ Ocean Way Studio with Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner, and lifted Hiatt beyond clubs where he’d been performing for one or two dozen people. It contains “Thing Called Love,” the song Bonnie Raitt later made a hit, and the standard “Have a Little Faith in Me.”

“Crossing Muddy Waters,” his 15th album, was an acoustic disc recorded in a Tennessee home studio and set him on a DIY course he follows today. Besides the title cut, it includes “Only the Song Survives,” which is the title for his latest project, a big box set that collects 15 of his albums on vinyl and is released Friday. Four days. The lesson? “Let’s play and capture the magic,” he said. “That’s kind of the approach I’ve used ever since. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than a couple of weeks on a record.” He has a daughter, Lilly, who’s making her own way in the business (”she’s kind of scary good, in my humble opinion”) and is looking ahead to new music with Cooder. But he recently sat down with The Associated Press to take a look back. AP: When I was pitched this project, I wondered if this

wasn’t some sort of retirement thing. Hiatt: I’m not resting on my laurels. They’re too shaky. AP: Is retirement something you’ve ever given thought to? Hiatt: Not really. Slowing down, yeah. Being at home more with my wife after 33 years of marriage and most of them spent apart. We just realized that over the last few years, in fact. And I have slowed down from more than 120 shows a year to between 60 and 75. So I’m home more. It was great in one respect, it was like dating again. In another respect, it was like ‘who the hell are you?’ So we had to learn how to spend more time together. AP: Your song “Robber’s Highway” (about a singer at the tail end of a career) makes someone wonder about the cost of doing it for so long. Hiatt: The beauty, of course, the wonderful thing about it, is

playing. B.B. King, I think he said, you don’t pay us for the two hours we play, you pay us for the other 22. That’s the rub of being a troubadour. It’s the travel that kills you, and breaks hearts and destroys relationships and gets you into all sorts of ancillary trouble, potentially, especially when you’re young. At the end of the day, this is my life. This is what I signed up to do. AP: How is songwriting different now from when you were younger? Hiatt: I’ve gone through so many periods where the flow of it changes ... They come a little slower now, and I assume it’s because I’m older. AP: Is it because of high standards? Hiatt: I don’t know about that! My standards have always been pretty lax. Tom Petty used to call songwriting, ‘getting one in the

boat,’ like you’re fishing: We got another one in the boat, boys. I feel that way about a song. Any way I can get one into the boat, I’m happy. Hiatt: Starting in 2000, I kind of had a rebirth with ‘Crossing Muddy Waters.’ It kind of got my attention in terms of where I might be headed as a singersongwriter. I think that set the tone. I had been playing with a rock band, rockin’ pretty hard through the 1990s, and I had these songs, they were acoustic stuff, and I thought I should record it close to how I created it. The 33-work exhibition “William H. Rau: Connecting to Community,” presents a unique view of the albumen landscape photography collection at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Altoona on display

through May 9. Eight guest curators (see sidebar) selected the featured photos from the nearly 600 prints in the special collection. The William H. Rau PRR Photograph Collection is owned by American Premier Underwriters, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio, with the Altoona Area Public Library, and maintained by the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, Altoona, as part of the museum’s Special Collections. Between 1890 and 1895, Rau documented the rail line from New York to Pittsburgh and the series is among his bestknown works. “The Altoona location of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art houses the William H. Rau collection of photographs,” said Barbara Hollander, Altoona site coordinator, about SAMA-Altoona and Rau: “This is a tremendous responsibility, to be charged with the care and handling for this rare, archival treasury of albumen photos. ‘Queen & Slim’ is romantic, urgent and beautiful BY MARK KENNEDY The Associated Press

Rarely has a Tinder date ended so poorly than the one shown in “Queen & Slim.” Even more rarely has a bad Tinder date produced such a great film. The remarkable “Queen & Slim” is a romance and a road movie, a film about outlaws on the run, two journeys of selfdiscovery and a nuanced social commentary. It’s not perfect but it’s close — an urgent, beautiful and socially conscious trip through the American racial psyche in 2019.

‘Queen & Slim’ Starring: Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie TurnerSmith Rated: R Theater: AMC 12

“ Queen & Slim ” is the feature-film directorial debut from Melina Matsoukas, who has directed episodes of HBO’s “Insecure” and helmed Beyonce’s Grammy-winning video “Formation.” The script is from Emmy-winner Lena Waithe (Netflix’s “Master of None”) with, bizarrely, an assist from disgraced “A Million Little Pieces” author James Frey, and a nod to “Thelma & Louise.” The film starts in a Cleveland diner with a mismatched pair who have connected online. She’s a stiff lawyer in a turtleneck; he’s a peaceful retail worker in Carhartt. She picked him because his profile picture looked sad. (”I felt sorry for you,” she says.) This date is going nowhere. Driving her home — we don’t learn their real names until the very end — Slim is pulled over for failing to execute a turn signal. The white police officer’s aggressive style cycles out of control and ends with the cop shot, Queen injured and three lives forever altered. The couple can’t wait around to explain they acted in self-defense: They’re both young and black and a white cop is dying. They have to go. Now. The script has Queen and Slim travel from Ohio through Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida, encountering different people along the way. — clothes and hair as well — for new ones, growing more human and empathetic each mile that rolls past. Daniel Kaluuya of “Get Out” fame takes Slim from a sad-sack who obeys the rules to a man deeply in love and ready to fight for it. Jodie Turner-Smith, in her first feature film lead, makes an astonishing debut, stiff and understated when we meet her and evolving into a vulnerable warrior in a leopard minidress. Both are haunted, anxious and guilty. They end the film undaunted. Intriguingly, the couple travel without access to Twitter or Facebook or Instagram. Queen has advised the pair to toss their phones in case authorities are tracking them, leaving them in a social media blackout. (The couple who met on Tinder are now cut off from the world.) We know they are being pursued from screaming newspaper headlines and TV snippets of viral video but Queen and Slim are really left in their own bubble — usually the confines of a car — with the radio playing. And, wow, is the music good. The soundtrack is a tour through black music, from soul to Afrobeat to hip-hop

and New Orleans bounce, with varied artists like Fela Kuti, The-Dream, 6lack, Vince Staples, Bilal, Solange, Lil Baby, Marvin Sapp, Megan Thee Stallion, Herbie Hancock and Luther Vandross. Lauren Hill offers the new song “Guarding the Gates,” playing over the end credits. What makes “Queen & Slim” more than just a road movie is the subtle and yet devastating way in which these would-be lovers are seen by those they come across. A black man in a parking lot holds up the Black Power fist while a white woman in genteel Savannah, Georgia, wants to turn them over to the cops. A white gas station clerk hopes to hold Slim’s Glock, while a young black boy is so moved by their actions that he provokes a fight with police. Queen and Slim are just scared and falling in love. They don’t see themselves as revolutionaries or cowards or symbols. Yet their very presence frays marriages, strains the blue bonds between police, fractures the notion of black solidarity, and tests a father and son. There are lovely small roles by Indya Moore and Bokeem Woodbine. Sturgill

Simpson plays the officer who starts the manhunt off, and Chloe Sevigny and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea are the bickering Georgia couple. The look of the film is arresting in its focus on lived-in decay and seedy, weedy poverty and the filmmakers, intriguingly, have given the actors dialogue never spoken out loud but communicated almost telepathically. Matsoukas handles comedy and drama expertly, and she directs a pivotal dance sequence with slinky care — it signals the relationship between Slim and Queen moving into lustful territory — but stumbles slightly juxtaposing the couple’s intimate love scene with a clunky violent street demonstration. Overwise, she keeps the tension going wonderfully, with music and fake-outs and frightened glances. “Queen & Slim” is a powerful look at places and issues not often explored in movies, and it’s unusual for being a big studio film starring two people of color created by people of color. There is much talk in the film about legacy — what we leave behind — but everyone involved in this film should be proud of what they’ve offered the world.

Though they hadn’t met before this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, Linda Ronstadt became accustomed to being mistaken for a fellow honoree. “I used to sign Sally Field’s autograph in the ‘60s,” the music icon reveals. “People would come up to me and say, ‘Could I have your autograph, Miss Field?’ I’d say I wasn’t her, and they wouldn’t believe me, so I just signed her name. There was about a year-and-a-half where we really lined up in terms of our looks.” One of the top-selling female recording artists in history, 10-time Grammy winner Ronstadt receives one of the most prestigious of all

entertainment awards in a CBS telecast Sunday, Dec. 15. Taped the previous weekend at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and hosted by past recipient LL Cool J, the 42nd annual event also salutes twotime Oscar winner Field and the children’s series “Sesame Street” (which is marking its 50th anniversary), conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and music’s Earth, Wind & Fire. “It’s hard to accept and evaluate your own work,” the good-humored Ronstadt reflects. “I just know it took me a lot of years.” As for the part of receiving the honor she may appreciate the most, she adds, “I’m so happy I don’t have to

give a speech! I’ve developed quite a stammer because of the Parkinson’s (disease, which Ronstadt was diagnosed with in 2012).” Since a brief filmed biography of the honoree is part of the presentation, Ronstadt notes she finds any career recap “a little daunting. I don’t want people to think the (the work in the) ‘70s is all I did. I did my best singing in the ‘90s, and I really only started learning how to sing in the ‘80s.” Fans of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Ronstadt might challenge that. After scoring her first success with The Stone Poneys and the tune “Different Drum,” she launched a parade of solo singles including “You’re No Good,”

“When Will I Be Loved,” “Heat Wave,” “It’s So Easy,” “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” (and such albums as “Heart Like a Wheel,” “Prisoner in Disguise” and “Living in the USA”). Her work eventually covered a number of genres. “I don’t like listening to my own stuff, because it’s frozen in time,” explains the subject of the well-reviewed documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” which CNN will show on New Year’s Day. “It makes me think that I was never able to sing. If I do listen to it, I’m astonished at how much work it was and how long it took. And the better I got, the more respect I got.”
