‘My Future Is My Past’ Anti-Records

Inside a New Orleans studio, Walter “Wolfman” Washington takes a sip of his drink, puts the glass down — ice cubes percussively chinking — and strums an acoustic guitar while singing about the unwanted consequences of a “wild romance.” After “Lost Mind,” Washington, a stalwart of the local blues and R&B scene, invites drummer Stanton Moore, pianist David Torkanowsky and bassist James Singleton to join him. With guest vocalist Irma Thomas — Washington was in her first band — they tackle David Egan’s “Even Now.” Washington puts his guitar down for “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes,” accompanied only by Singleton and Mike Dillon on vibes and percussion, but picks up an electric one for a solo rendition of “Save Your Love For Me.” The funk in Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “I Don’t Want to Be a Lone Ranger” is condensed and filtered through Jon Cleary’s Hammond B3 and Washington’s elastic solo, while Moore and Singleton return to help add urgency and speed to “Steal Away,” the Jimmy Hughes ballad. Ivan Neville walks in to play a Fender Rhodes on “She’s Everything To Me,” a Doc Pomus/Dr. John tune also covered by Johnny Adams, whom Washington played with for many years. It’s only Cleary on piano for Allen Toussaint’s “I Cried My Last Tear,” as Washington’s voice and guitar make a real weeper of the tune once released by his cousin, Ernie K-Doe. “My Future Is My Past,” produced by Galactic’s Ben Ellman, wasn’t recorded in a single session, but it’s fun to imagine it was because that’s how fresh and cohesive this magnificent album sounds and feels.

Lewis, whose stage name is Twin Shadow, has embraced drum machines, synths and the wild earnestness of ‘80s pop. It got away from him on his 2015 album “Eclipse,” an over-the-top, slow burning collection of pure bombast. Twin Shadow has toned it down on his new fourth album, “Caer,” but it’s never far, lurking. The album, titled after the Spanish word for “to fall,” is always one flourish away from falling into disaster. It’s a mixed bag but one that clearly shows growth and a way out of the shadows. “Brace,” featuring Rainsford, with its throwback spacy keyboard, is easily the album’s outstanding track, a perfect collision of the songwriter’s influences. It’s rooted in the ’80s but still sounds fresh, adding a guitar solo and name-checking Tom Petty. “Saturdays,” with the ladies from Haim stopping by to add their positively sunny sound, feels like it could play during the end credits of a John Hughes movie. It’s a winner. But the flatulent “18 Years” ultimately fails, sounding like a cut that didn’t make the “Say Anything” soundtrack. The tender “Little Woman” gets overwhelmed by production elements, a frequent issue that pops up on “Caer.” Many songs try too hard to be weighty and sound like they’ve been arranged for an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Megan Marcaurelle-Jones will be âswimmingã across the Mishler Theatre stage in Altoona Community Theatreás production of Disneyás âThe Little Mermaidã next weekend after landing the titular role she has had her heart set on for years. âI am beyond excited to be playing this role,ã she said. âAriel has been one of my favorite princesses since I was a little girl, so this is kind of a dream come true for me.ã ACT is creating a challenging setting in which Marcaurelle-Jones will literally be flying across the stage to simulate her swimming. âIt really adds to the magic of the show,ã said the Altoona actress. Tickets to the five shows are selling briskly with scattered seats remaining in the lower orchestra section. It opens at 7:30 p.m. on May 3, with nightly shows, as well as 2 p.m. matinees, on May 4 and 5. Marvel goes even bigger with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

fter 10 years of lean, threadbare, Lilliputian tales, Marvel Studios has, thank heavens, finally decided to go big. The scale of “Avengers: Infinity War,” of course, isn’t a departure for Marvel. It’s an apotheosis. But is it possible to supersize what is already colossal? “Infinity War,” which brings together more than 30 significant characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and enough spandex to clothe a small nation, is a little like launching an invasion after the war was already won. Despite assured dominance, Marvel has gone nuclear. “Infinity” is an interesting word for the Marvel machine, which sets much of its development pipeline a decade in advance. Never-ending is indeed how the superhero era of blockbusterdom sometimes feels, both to its fans and its critics. Even Steven Spielberg, who once said superheroes will eventually go the way of the western, recently signed on to produce a DC Comics film. But the title refers to the six “Infinity Stones” scattered around the universe, each conveying a power of sorcery, like the time-warping one held by Doctor Strange. They are dearly sought by Thanos, the indestructible Titan warlord, who rules over much of space but would like all of it. With all the MacGuffins — er, stones — he can, with the snap of his fingers, wipe away half of the universe’s beings, to cull an overgrown herd, he envisions. And it’s, in part, the lure of finality that has made “Infinity War,” directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (veterans of two “Captain America” movies), one of the year’s most salivated-over movies. The preamble has been one long tease — we have seen fleeting glimpses of Thanos (Josh Brolin) since Barack Obama’s first term — leading up to a battle royal that could mean the demise of some of Marvel’s most famous faces.

Already an actor who can appear chiseled from granite, his Thanos is an imposing boulder of a villain, with weary eyes and lined creases running down his massive chin. He and his adoptive daughter, Gamora, are the only characters with much of a story in “Infinity War.” He’s the immovable object around which the gaggle of superheroes orbits. There may be some hint of overpopulation anxiety in Thanos’ ambition and in the Russos’ frighteningly overcrowded film. Its saviors repeatedly contemplate sacrifice. Previous “Avengers” chapters and the Russos’ “Captain America: Civil War” expended some effort considering the Avengers’ place in society and whether they should be controlled by the state. But this movie, a sensory onslaught, has little room for political subtext. In documenting Kennedyás journey from a âcop-atheartã lawyer to polished politician, it highlights experiences that affected him, like a trip to the Mississippi Delta that opened his eyes to rural hunger. Viewers hear from key figures in Kennedyás life, including Paul Schrade, who was shot in the head when 24-year-old Sirhan Sirhan fired at Kennedy on June 5, 1968. The series, produced by RadicalMedia, Trilogy Films and LooksFilm, also features interviews from Sirhanás brother, Munir Sirhan, and Juan Romero, the Ambassador Hotel busboy who was at Kennedyás side.
