ANNES, France — Forty-four years after his Cannes Film Festival debut, âMean Streets,ã Martin Scorsese returned to the Croisette earlier this week to recall his breakthrough film, one he said he only understood years later. A day after declaring open the 71st Cannes with jury president Cate Blanchett, Scorsese joined a post-screening conversation for âMean Streets,ã which played in Cannesá Directors Fortnight section in 1974. âThis was the first time for me at Cannes,ã said Scorsese, “and it was almost the best because of anonymity and trying very hard to change that.ã âMean Streets,ã of course, helped establish Scorsese, who then had two features under his belt (“Whoás That Knocking on My Doorã and âBoxcar Berthaã). Two years after âMean Streetsã landed in Cannes, Scorseseás âTaxi Driverã would win the Palme dáOr despite booing at its premiere and the reported apprehensions of jury president Tennessee Williams. And âMean Streets,ã a film about two Catholic brothers — Harvey Keitelás responsible, guilt-ridden Charlie and Robert De Niroás more combustible Johnny Boy — in a violent, gangster-controlled Little Italy, remains one of his

‘All I See Is War’ Rise Records

There are some people who sneer at hard rockers Sevendust, expressing dislike for the metal band for its lighter tones and stylistic changes. To which we respectfully say: Blow it out your ears. The Atlanta-based metal-heads are back with “All I See Is War,” their 12th studio album. It’s filled with Sevendust’s typical blistering hooks, driving grooves and infectious choruses, knitted together by Lajon Witherspoon’s envious vocals and Morgan Rose’s sharp tat-tat-tat drumming. They have teamed up for the first time with producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette, and he’s layered more pro-

It’s not a revolution — more like another step in the band’s movement toward a cleaner, polished sound. “All I See Is War” is a follow-up to 2015’s “Kill the Flaw,” which garnered the band a spot on the upper third of the Billboard 200 and a Grammy nomination for best metal performance. This time, Sevendust are more in the hard rock category. Much of the new album could easily fit on a Foo Fighters’ CD, including most of the second half’s songs — including “Not Original” ‘’Descend” and “Life Deceives You,” songs rooted in bluesy or progressive rock. Old-school fans of Sevendust have “God Bites His Tongue,” ‘’Cheers” and “Risen.” “Medicated,” a song about deadening and dependency, showcases the merging of a super-tight band with powerful lyrics: “So numb all the time/ How have we become so empty?” asks Witherspoon. Other outstanding tracks are the first — “Dirty,” which includes a virtuoso solo by lead guitarist Clint Lowery — and the last, “The Truth,” both showcasing a band able to rage furiously one

‘Rebound’ Frenchkiss Records

Inspired by a 2016 trip to her ancestral Greece, you can feel the electricity in “Rebound,” Eleanor Friedberger’s fourth solo album since The Fiery Furnaces, her duo with brother Matthew, took a break in mid-2011. Steady voltage comes from the arrangements — drum machines and synths that lay a novel (for Friedberger) foundation for her 10 songs and crystalline electric guitars that sweep, stab and flutter across the tracks. Every now and then some very 1980s sounds appear, bringing back soothing memories like lullabies you faintly recall. The melodies and lyrics provide their own current — little jolts in just the right doses to keep you listening to one,

the other, or both. The most buoyant tunes form a neat trio at end of what could be side one: “Everything,” ‘’In Between Stars” and “Make Me a Song.” The first sounds like Laurie Anderson at 45 rpm.; it’s easy to imagine the second — with its mention of the sea, sky, salt, moons, a spring and iron — being written on a Greek island; while the third has bounce and seems like an invitation to something bigger, whether romance or purpose. “The Letter” has a long, very beautiful and melancholy refrain reflecting the difficulties of human communication: “The opposite of what he thought he thought/The opposite of what she wanted.” ‘’It’s Hard” recounts her experiences at the Athens night club Rebound, which gives the album its name and, apparently, some of its sonic identity, while “Are We Good?” is like snippets of dialogue where you only hear one of the voices. In her songs, Friedberger is often in search mode, but she and collaborator Clemens Knieper have given “Rebound” a charming sound that these days is not so easy to find. — Pablo Gorondi, The Associated Press

The royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be covered Saturday by networks including CBS.

ayle King is having almost as royal a time as a certain princessto-be.

The “CBS This Morning” co-anchor went to England for last month’s primetime special “Meghan Markle: American Princess,” and she’s going back as one of many correspondents covering the royal wedding of actress Markle and Prince Harry on Saturday, May 19. King will team with “Entertainment Tonight” co-host Kevin Frazier for CBS to cover all the pageantry. The network also will air a two-hour recap special that night. “I’ve loved the royals for a long time,” the lively, friendly King says. “I

was the girl who got up to watch Princess Diana get married, because I thought she was so cool. There was just something about her that was so different, so I followed everything about her ... from the courtship to the marriage and then, unfortunately, to the funeral. “To see the video of William and Harry walking behind the casket, I remember thinking, ‘I hope her boys are going to be OK,’ ” King notes. “Now, to see them all grown up, it’s all very exciting to me.” Also exciting to King is getting to know, at least through her research, the next member of the royal family. “I still have never seen a full episode of ‘Suits,’ ” she admits of

the USA Network series on which Markle has costarred, though she has watched certain scenes “to see her and to hear her voice and to get a sense of her.” However, King knows the new husband personally: “I met Harry last summer. Google does this retreat every year, and he was there. He was walking around barefoot, very open and welcoming. I sat at a dinner with him, James Corden and James’ producer Ben (Winston). I’m not saying that Harry and I are great pals, but it was fun to spend even a little bit of time with him.” Famously a “great pal” of Oprah Winfrey, King reflects, “Everybody says this is a different kind of royal family, Harry

The father, we learn, is a scientist of some kind who knows why the rains are so deadly and abandons the family to find a cure. There, safe in the high-tech bunker, the children remain for six years until food runs out and they seek to find their father. The sister has become a young woman and the boy morphs into an edgy teen. The water, viewers find out, remains contaminated and the rains still are deadly. And there are few survivors. Co-creators Christian Potalivo and Jannik Tai Mosholt said it was im-

portant to set this story in Scandinavia to explore the regionás self-perception that the system is always there to pick up those facing hard times. Using the most extreme situation, the series allowed them to peel away âeverything we as Scandinavians find as being specifically Scandinavian.ã But Mosholt said the post-apocalyptic drama through the eyes of young people should have appeal to audiences around the world. âWe believe that the core themes and basic questions weáre trying to ask are universal,ã Mosholt said. âWhat is it being human and who are we really? We find these questions to be important in this day and age.ã
