The delay in the release of Charlie Puthás sophomore album has been maddening. He already had a hit with one of the songs, âAttention,ã last summer. Another, âHow Long,ã came out this winter. Now the rest of it is finally out and ... well, now weád like to apologize for being impatient. The 13-track âVoicenotesã is an astonishing, glistening collection of summerperfect pop, crafted by a gifted songwriter with a butterfly falsetto and a knack for hooks. Itás so very 2018 that he named the CD after the iPhone recording app he uses to craft his infectious bombs. The album opens with âThe Way I Am,ã and on it, he addresses any critics out there: âYou can either hate me/ Or love

He asks a lover to be understanding (“Patientã), suspects heás being cheated on (“How Longã and âSomebody Told Meã), tries to convince a girl heás mature enough (“Boyã), tells a girl to stop sweating him (“Slow It Downã), misses his long-distance squeeze (“LA Girlsã) and macks on another manás girlfriend (“Empty Cupsã). Hey, heás 26. But so consummate a songwriter is Puth that he also invites others into his party — and mimics their style. He made the finger-snapping a cappella âIf You Leave Me Nowã with Boyz II Men and a groovy, uplifting James Taylor-ish tune in âChangeã with the actual James Taylor. Puth had a hand in writing all the songs and produced the album. Perhaps the only misstep is the last song, the piano-driven ballad âThrough It All,ã a kind of grandiose mic drop that channels Frank Sinatraás âMy Way.ã Look, Puth has a fantastic career ahead, of that there is no doubt. Valentine, a pop and R&B singer/songwriter will perform May 20 at 3:45 p.m. on the Food Court Stage, and at 5:15 p.m. the areaás newest band, Altoona Brass Collective, featuring 16 musicians and original arrangements of a variety of songs. Entertainer Jay Smar of Landingville, Schuylkill County, performs original compositions highlighting coal mining history and enjoys hearing the local high school bands and musicians. âThe festival committee really stands behind the kids,ã he said. âPerforming live is really important for these young musicians. It broadens their mindset.ã Such opportunities are especially important, he said, as schools budgets and grant funding withers. âNo other festival that Iám aware of does so much for local kids either on stage or through art displays. Ninety percent of those attending come to hear the students and view their art,ã he said. Two art exhibits will showcase area art talent. The Juried Fine Art exhibition will be located in three different galleries inside the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The student art exhibit, inside the Adler Athletic Complex, will include the work of students from 23 Blair County schools, and young future artists will be able to create their own artwork in

the Childrenás Village. Young people visiting the Childrenás Village also have the opportunity to try various musical instruments in the Altoona Symphony Orchestraás instrument petting zoo. More than 50 artisans will display their work in the Crafts Village. Hand-crafted items for sale will include paintings, jewelry, stained glass, body products, candles, hand sewn items, pottery and much more. The Festival Food Court offers a myriad of fresh-cooked food selections by 20 skilled chefs and food artisans. The menu choices range from funnel cakes and other unique pastry items, ethnic food, hand-cut French fries, Penn State Creamery ice cream and favorites like sausages and cheese steak hoagies. The annual Tourism Expo, hosted in a different location each year by Explore Altoona, can be found this year at the Blair County Arts Festival. ‘Deadpool 2’ doesn’t disappoint BY MARK KENNEDY The Associated Press

t a recent screening of “Deadpool 2,” the audience didn’t get up when the end credits came up, patiently sitting through the scrolling names of visual effects supervisors and lighting specialists. Real “Deadpool” fans know to stick around until the ushers toss them out. That’s because the filmmakers aren’t content with containing their sprawling, anarchic and subversive hero in any conventional box. No, in the world of Deadpool, even the boring end credits are studded with jokes and teases. So hold onto your seats as Ryan Reynolds once more dons the red suit and katana swords for this saucy, overstuffed and very entertaining sequel to the 2016 massive hit “Deadpool,” which became the second-highest grossing Rrated film domestically after “The Passion of the Christ.” How do we know that? Deadpool happily brags about it in the new film, continuing his breaking-the-fourth-wall humor. Just some of the other things that get derided this time are “Yentl,” “Frozen,” “Stranger Things,” Wolverine, cultural appropriation, Brad Pitt, the Norwegian band A-ha, “Basic Instinct,” “Robocop,” fanny packs, “Say Anything,” dubstep, “Sharknado” and Reynolds himself, who mocks his disastrous earlier decision to play Green Lantern. “Deadpool 2” is as gruesome and violent as the first, but perhaps the biggest victim is the very concept of superhero movies. elly Clarkson will use her voice in several ways on NBC in the coming days. The first “American Idol” has spent recent weeks on her first season as a fulltime coach and mentor on “The Voice,” which ends its 14th round Monday and Tuesday, May 21 and 22. She’s also in a Red Nose Day edition of “Hollywood Game Night” Thursday, May 24 ... but first, Clarkson serves as host of the Billboard Music Awards — in the ceremony’s first NBC telecast after moving from ABC — on Sunday, May 20. Among performers confirmed early for the event, Shawn Mendes and Korean pop act BTS (both nominated for Top Social Artist) are scheduled to take the

stage during the three-hour broadcast from Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. So are Camila Cabello (who has four nominations, including Top New Artist and Top Female Artist), Janet Jackson (who receives the Icon Award), John Legend and Dua Lipa. Ariana Grande is slated to open the show. Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran are tied for the most Billboard Music Award nominations this year with 15 each. They’re followed by Post Malone (with 13), Imagine Dragons (11), Drake (nine), and Justin Bieber and Cardi B (eight each). Referring to “The Voice” as well as award shows, she admits with her typical candor to maintaining her own take on competitions, despite her new hosting role. “I don’t know if it’s fair to ever compare,” she reflects, “because it’s a hard thing to do with any artist. That’s like saying Aretha Franklin is a better singer, or that Whitney Houston’s a better singer than Aretha Franklin because she sold more records. Well, that’s

not true. They’re both undoubtedly amazing singers. It’s just that everybody has their own path.” Clarkson goes as far as to say that she doesn’t think comparing artists is “ever a smart thing to do, especially when you just never know ... especially if you’re building a career. Not every career is ‘overnight,’ like mine or some people’s. (That was) because it was a brand-new thing that nobody had ever heard. The stars were aligned, so you kind of have to take into context what all’s happening.” Indeed, Clarkson believes artists shouldn’t be discounted just “because they haven’t reached Lady Gaga potential. They pay their bills and they live their dream, and I think that counts. And that matters.”
