2. Hazards identification 2.1
Used normally, these products present no special health hazards other than skin burns; the risk of eye injury and if splashes of hot bitumen enter the eye. In the case of glass fibre felts, the glass fibre content is present as a carrier membrane which has been impregnated and coated with bitumen. Consequently, there is very little likelihood of exposure to glass fibre dust when the materials are used in accordance with recommended practice. However, damage to the felt could result in exposure of the glass fibre base whereupon operator exposure should be controlled to within the recommended occupational exposure standards.
3. Composition and information about the components 3.1
Hydrogard 10 is a glass reinforced oxidised bitumen base layer/protection sheet, with a sanded finish to both sides. The OES for Asphalt, Petroleum Fumes (bitumen) are 5mg/m3 (8 hour TWA) and 10mg/m3 (25 minute reference period). Silica is present as a constituent of the sand and surface finish used. The MEL for total inhalable dust is 0.3mg/m3. Glass fibre is present as a reinforcing base encapsulated in bitumen. Exposure levels are likely to be very low in normal use. The MEL, 8 hour TWA, are 5mg/m3, for total inhalable dust, and 2 fibres/ml when determined by a HSC approved method.

4. First-aid measures Remove all contaminated clothing and obtain first-aid treatment 4.1
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If discomfort persists seek medical attention.
4.2
Eye Contact: Flood eyes with water or eye-wash solution for not less than 10 minutes, and obtain medical attention.
4.3
Skin Contact: Cold Product: Wash with plenty of soap and water. Hot Product : Immediately immerse in or flush affected area with large amounts of cold water to dissipate heat. Cover the affected area with clean cotton sheeting or gauze and obtain prompt medical attention. No attempt should be made to remove material from the skin or to remove contaminated clothing, as damaged flesh can easily be torn.
4.4
Ingestion: If swallowed rinse out mouth with water or milk, and obtain medical attention. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.
5. Fire-fighting measures Roofing felts are combustible and once ignited will burn producing black smoke containing harmful products of combustion. Fires should be extinguished with foam or dry powder. Under no circumstances should a water jet be allowed to come in contact with molten bitumen as this will only spread the fire. 5.1
Extinguishing Media: Dry powder, foam.
5.2
Extinguishing media to avoid: Water.
5.3
Protection of Fire-fighters: Bitumen based roofing membranes are combustible and release dense black smoke when they burn. In the event of a fire, wear protective clothing.
6. Accidental release measures 6.1
Measures in case of accidental release: None
7. Handling and storage
