Introduction

General Description

Harmer Kessel offers the widest available range of plastic drains for more specialised applications, providing a complete solution to all problems of interior and exterior floor drainage and backflow control.

Harmer Kessel drains incorporate all of the design advantages associated with the Harmer Floor ranges of floor gullies plus the economies of plastics in use with stainless steel. Gullies are of high quality manufacture offering excellent value engineering.

Modular components give total flexibility to create whatever solution is needed for specific drainage requirements. Grates are fully adjustable for height and rotational alignment.

Features Harmer Kessel products are manufactured in plastic and are therefore non-corrosive with low maintenance requirement. The drainage and backflow range is comprehensive, with retrofit and replacement parts also available.

Key Benefits ■ Wide product range ■ Modular components for application flexibility ■ Adjustable grates ■ Economical with low maintenance ■ Ideal for new installations or retrofit ■ Plastic components offering materials benefits ■ Stainless steel, cast iron and plastic gratings

2

Harmer Kessel drains are available for connections in DN50 and DN100 pipe sizes for a variety of drainage applications with a choice of stainless steel or plastic grating tops. All gullies are designed for ease of maintenance with removable top access foul odour trap. Harmer Kessel drains are designed so that parts becoming lost or worn can be quickly and easily replaced. The comprehensive Harmer Kessel range covers:

Backflow stops — both for soil and waste, and for waste water only. With fully automatic single and double self closing flaps, manual closure possible in emergency. Retrofitting and conversion are possible after installation.

External drains — range includes yard drains and rainwater drains for removal of surface water in outdoor areas. Removable odour traps are a feature that facilitates pipe cleaning. Yard drain features include the capability to accommodate settlement after installation, height adjustability and

Alumasc Technical Helpline 01744 648400

grates that are adjustable to paving patterns. Both yard and rainwater drains incorporate adjustable side inlet components.

Heavy duty internal drains — range includes cellar and floor drains with removable odour trap and sludge basket, and two cellar drain variations with backflow stop, and backflow stop with pump. Fully adjustable and variable installation depth are possible as above.

‘Economy’ drains — for internal application. In ground and intermediate floors, in bathrooms and washdown areas. Products incorporate self cleansing odour traps and offer full adjustability for height, level and rotational alignment.

Applicable Standards Harmer Kessel products comply with the following standards, where appropriate:

DIN 1986 Part 1: Water Drainage systems generally for buildings and sites.

DIN 19599: Drains and Covers in Buildings.

DIN 18195: Waterproofing of buildings and structures.

DIN 1997 and DIN 19578: Backflow stops.

DIN 4043: Volatile liquid traps.

Pumpfix Technical Information

Plastics enable a material specification closely matched to utilisation requirements to be selected. In addition to the plastics PVC, PP and ABS which are commonly used for drains, other technical plastics such as PA, PPO, PEEK etc, may also be used where appropriate. A further advantage of the plastics used is that they can be fully recycled even after many years of service.

Site Drainage Systems Drains located below backflow level must be protected against backflow. The backflow level is specified by the local authorities (according to local criteria). If no specifications are available, the height of the road surface at the connecting point applies. A distinction is made between sewage which does not contain faeces and sewage which contains faeces (including sewage from WCs and urinals). Sewage which occurs below the backflow level and the public mains must be disposed of by means of a siphon. Sewage which occurs below the backflow level but can be fed into the public mains via a natural gradient should be transferred via a siphon or via backflow stops. In rooms in zones which are not frequently used: a) Sewage containing faeces can be led off via backflow stops or,

F 900

Special-purpose surfaces, eg, airport aprons (Group 6).

b) Sewage not containing faeces or components from urinals or WCs can be led off via backflow stops if the drain points do not need to be used in the event of backflow. Backflow stops can be used if: ■

No permanent water drainage is necessary.

Only a limited number of people use the system (eg, as in family houses) and a WC is available above the backflow level.

It does not need to serve any considerable rain catchment area and flooding of lowlying rooms by water draining off small surfaces, for example cellar floors, garage entrances etc, is prevented by suitable means (eg, sills etc).

Water occurring above the backflow level flows off according to the principle of communicating pipes in the event of backflow. However, if a backflow stop has been incorrectly installed and sewage from the building is thus led off above the backflow level because the backflow stop has closed, a cellar could become flooded when a bath which is above the backflow level is emptied. It is moreover not possible to use a WC during this period.
